We were here in the winter time so the gardens were dead but you could tell come springtime and summer it would be an amazing place to spend some time outdoors. The room was super nice and the cottage hosts were very friendly and nice to deal with. The only thing I would caution you on is to not barge into the area where it says Entrance. That lead you into a porch like area with a second door that leads inside to what might be the hosts residence. When we went to open the second door we were met with strong verbal cues to stop and sign the guest book. It was as if they didn't want us to enter any further. Come to find out this may have been there personal residence. The breakfast was amazing too. We had the raspberry clafouti and was super delicious. It's not something we would have ordered on our own but when we tasted it we couldn't get enough. The rooms came with almost everything you would need to include a corkscrew a couple of wine glasses a refrigerator microwave coffee etc. I would highly recommend this place. Jerry and Joanne were very friendly and informative hosts. They are very familiar with the island (both geographically and history) as well. I told the host that I'd really want to see bald eagle in a close distance if I may. Jerry told me all I need is to go the Double Bluff beach and pointed out exactly where I can see them. Wow!!! and yes, I do see the eagle couple in a close distance that day!! My room is beautifully decorated. A large window and very comfy chaise draw me very close to all the tall trees. From time to time, I saw plenty of birds kind of like flying next to me. Very cool. It is a forest setting room. I especially draw into all the paintings and drawings in the inn. There's a cabinet displaying some native american tools / arts as well. In room cable TV (and DVD), you have your own bathroom. The best of all, homemade delicious full breakfast (I dislike continental breakfast if I am in BnB, why do BnB if it is not for enjoying a good breakfast, right?). The location of this inn is good too, it is not sitting right in the the downtown (noisy) but just a minute away. Very convenient to go out enjoy lunch and dinner and then come back in the forest to rest. Oh, Jerry also knows about gold mining ... ask him where to find gold in the island when you visit there (wink wink!) And I forgot to add about the trails. This time I didn't do it because it rained pretty badly over the week, but for those love to explore the nature, check it out!

Everyday we saw a set of deer with a mom deer and 2 twin babies, very sweet watching these animals while at breakfast. I wi) be back over and over again! I would book this plenty of time in advance because it's so wonderful they book up fast. It's worth the wait to have this fantastic experience! My god, the food. Every single bite I took left me swooning with pleasure and reminiscing about it long after it had already been digesting. We'll be recounting memories of muffins, quiche, sticky buns and strawberry cake for quite some time into the future. You can burn off the calories from breakfast (which is worth every last one) by playing with the miniature farm animals and going for a long walk in the beautiful woods. We were headed to Sooke Harbor, BC for a much-needed, long weekend. Imagine our disappointment after driving 2+ hours from our home in Kirkland to the Black Ball Ferry in Port Angeles, only to find there was no room for us on the only afternoon ferry to Victoria!! Note: we learned a valuable lesson - make reservations if you want onboard!! Our spirits dashed, we began to formulate Plan B after canceling our reservation at Sooke Harbor. We searched the interweb for hotels or lodges in the vicinity and came across the Bond Retreat Ranch. After finding other places booked solid or not yet open for the season, we were very relieved when Tess said we could have the Cottage for the weekend! We headed straight to the Ranch where we were greeted by the congenial Tess and her sidekick, Goofy the hound dog. She took us on a quick tour of the Ranch - a lovely, well-maintained spread, which includes 5 guest rooms with the B&B, a large pasture for the two resident horses, a cute wedding chapel, covered patio for gathering, breakfast room made from a converted barn, pavilion for dancing, and several other outbuildings. Then we were escorted to our private little cottage with a cozy living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and a private yard with chairs, porch, picnic table, lots of trees and a nice view of the ranch. The B&B wasn't open for the season, but Tess was happy to put us up. All the buildings on the ranch were built by Morris, the 70 year-old owner and Tess' longtime partner. Morris bought the land when he was 18, logged the trees, milled the lumber and built it all himself, including their home on the premises. The workmanship is impressive and the entire place is clean, inviting, rustic and charming. The ranch is a lovely venue for a wedding, family reunion or group getaway. In season they have a nightly campfire and serve breakfast in the barn and patio. The Cottage was spotless - not a speck of dust or cobweb in sight! I found this very impressive considering we arrived off-season. The bed was so cozy - we slept like babies! There were lots of warm quilts and fluffy pillows to snuggle into. The kitchen has a fridge, sink, small range and is stocked with enough dishes, pans & utensils to prepare light meals. If you want to grill, there is one at the pavilion or they will bring one down to the Cottage. There is a book of local restaurant recommendations, some magazines about the area and an electric fireplace in the living room. What they don't have is a TV or wifi - so you are delightfully unplugged! The pavilion does have wireless if really needed (cell service on Verizon was sketchy at best). We spent two full days exploring the surroundings and east side of the Olympic National Park - Salt Creek State Park, Crescent Bay, Madison Falls, Hurricane Ridge, the Elwha Valley, Lake Crescent, Marymere Falls, the Lake Crescent Lodge, etc. We hiked a LOT! The weather was nice - our last day it was fantastic! We had a delicious dinner at the Alder Wood Bistro (highly recommended) and a crazy-good breakfast at the Oak Table Cafe, both in Sequim. We picked up some groceries at the Sunny Farms Country Store with its great selection of organic and local produce & meats, raw honey, etc. All of these are within 10 min of the Ranch. For our 2nd night we picnicked in the front yard, enjoying the vibrant, northwest skies for sunset. This was the best Plan B ever! We can't wait to come back and explore more of the area and hopefully spend another stay at the Ranch. Sadly, Morris & Tess are Looking to retire, so the Ranch is on the market. How I wish I had the youth and money to buy it! What a lovely piece of paradise. Fortunately, the Ranch will be open in the meantime and we highly recommend you check it out!

Easy to find from the Clinton ferry, Ken and Lynn Berry greeted me when I arrived and made me feel right at home. Located 14 feet off the ground, the treehouse is tucked enough away to feel secluded while the rest of the property is close enough to keep you on the grid. The room itself came with modern conveniences (electricity, heaters, a microwave, DVD player, WiFi) and plenty of lounging space, with a converted shed for bathroom business located outside a few paces away. I liked looking at the skylight above my bed at night, listening to the rain beat against the corrugated plastic and feeling the wind against the walls. The wooded surroundings made for a pitch black sleep and refreshing wake-ups. I would've utilized the deck with my morning pot of coffee, but it was too soggy and cold all weekend to really enjoy it. I could see how it would be a lovely place to sit and enjoy the nature scene, though, and I appreciated the colorful LED lights Ken had attached to the trees making it feel like a thousand fireflies were escorting me home at day's end. I even saw two deer while I was there! Billed as a bed and breakfast, I was hoping for something hot and substantial to eat when I woke up. Instead I was given cold breakfast items both nights for the following mornings. I was living my hippie dream, so the granola and fruit were fitting, I suppose. Lynn also baked me GF scones on the second day and gave me a relaxing massage (she's a licensed massage therapist and provides this service for an additional fee), so my complaints are minimal. The island itself is fun to explore and the view at Double Bluff Beach is worth a stop on your way back to Mukilteo.

If you are as interested in a real getaway as I was, you should consider talking to Jillian, she is incredibly knowledgable about the area, kind, hospitable, friendly, and she obviously treats everyone like family.

Comfy outdoor furniture and wine chilled in the wine fridge made it perfect. I enjoyed the many features in the kitchen, from chilled drawers and warming drawers, wine fridge and double ovens. But I wish I would have brought my own knives. The master bedroom was comfy and the 4x8 rain shower was refreshing. What we found extremely disappointing was the lack of a sandy beach. The beach was full of very sharp oyster shells and rocks, some 16 inches high. This was a big concern since our grandkids are 3 and 7. Even with shoes we all have sliced ankles. Thankfully the next door neighbor told us we could use the beach in front of his house which we did. After three vacations around the canal, the grandkids are asking for a lake vacation. Guess grandpa and I will enjoy the canal properties ourselves..... That's a good thing! ;-).
