I felt like I got an honest opinion and a high standard of care through these appointments. They listened to my concerns and came up with a treatment option that was primarily Invisalign with minimal time in traditional braces. I think this would probably have been a good option for me, but I didn't take it. Now I have what my periodontist calls "bad teeth", but I was too cheap and unwilling to spend any time whatsoever wearing traditional braces. I was vain and just wanted straight teeth. I didn't like that my bit was jacked up too, but it didn't bother me enough to fix it at the time. Ultimately, I ended up choosing a different treatment option and I ended up going to a different orthodontist. In retrospect, maybe I made the wrong call by not following Dr. Kunik's advice (or the advice of my ortho. - they both had the same recommendation). The reality of the fact that I have to live with these chompers for the rest of my life is starting to sink in now that I'm older. Although I'm probably no wiser, age alone changed how I see a $500-1,000 price difference - dental treatment that will last your whole life. Let's say you're a teen and Dr. Kunik says something to the effect of, "Dear, I know all your friends have Invisalign but we need to use transitional braces to fix your {shark teeth synonym}." I'd suggest you do your best to talk your most sympathetic parent into getting you whatever braces Dr. Kunik recommends. Why? 1. Your parent(s) want you to be happy, healthy, and your best adult self so you don't move back in after college. They might have insurance that covers your braces now. If so, you take it and you run and get yourself whatever braces they tell you to get. Dr. Kunik's office can try to find more affordable treatments if the original proposal is not affordable for your family. It might just be a balance between short term aesthetics (while you're undergoing treatment) and cost. Their office was actually really cool about finding more affordable treatment options for me. 2. There's virtually no downside to any type of braces as a teen: Do braces make you feel awkward? Probably, but so do crooked teeth. Do they hurt? Yes, but not as much as they will later if you don't get them. Do people like to kiss metal mouths? Maybe not, but high school relationship prospects are generally garbage anyways. Basically, I'd say, at any age - if you have good insurance and you can afford to get your teeth done right, I bet Dr. Kunik would do a bang up job. My insurance was terrible, and I wanted extra money on hand for fun things you want in your 20s (like a 401K, or a down payment on a convertible). Personally, I ended up going elsewhere. I saved like, $500-1,000, which (as Dr. Kunik will tell you, and I would tend to agree) is very little if you think of this as a lifetime investment. Is it worth it? That's a personal choice. My opinion is, regardless of where you go, seriously consider the treatment you can afford that is best for the long term.

Dr. Neker Bernuy upon reviews and initial visit seemed like an experienced and amazing…read moreorthodontist. However, my first red flag was an issue with the financial / billing staff. The representative did not verify proper insurance benefits, protocols, and procedures - prior to my initial consultation. When a doctor is in network with an insurance company they are bound by the laws of that carrier and cannot charge whatever they feel the treatment cost should be. Dr. Bernuy was trying to charge a certain amount to conduct my orthodontic treatment. However, the insurance company stated there were maximums and limits for treatment care cost for traditional metal braces. We worked through this issue after I made the call to the insurance company in their presence. I continued with care in spite of this issue of trying to overcharge for treatment, this is a lesson learned. As treatment went on the quality of care seemed very poor. The Orthodontic Assistants did not seem trained and proficient at their jobs, some barely spoke English, the staff seemed ever changing and limited at times. When I brought this issue to the doctor's attention and requested that only he conduct my adjustments. He whispered in a low voice, "I am not about to do all this work." I am not sure if he knew his voice was audible to me as I was laid back in the chair with my ear next to his mouth. This was disrespectful and unprofessional. In shock and surprise, I thought to myself well hire properly trained and diverse staff. I did not allow him push off his untrained staff on my complicated case. I waited patiently for his personal adjustment, no matter the wait time. The final straw was after a year of treatment my crossbite issue had not improved and there a space that was taking over 6 months to close. Typically, space is the easiest thing to change during orthodontic care. When I asked for changes earlier in treatment he said no without explanation. Thus, I was left feeling like I had no say so in my own care and treatment. Furthermore, normal adjustment timeline for orthodontic treatment is every 6 weeks. However, I was seeing Dr. Bernuy every 4 weeks whereby he could bill and milk my insurance on a monthly basis while dragging out care. With this more aggressive treatment schedule, movements and changes should have been more visible. But there was limited or no changes in oral care. Dr. Bernuy seemed like he was flying by the seat of his pants and did not have a real timeline and plan of action. Managing 2 offices and poorly trained staff, he did not invest in the special care and needs of his patient, just doing the same basic drills on patients no matter the difficulty of the case. I wrote a lengthy email explaining to the doctor, I wanted to go with another plan of action such as adding buttons, elastics, or stronger wires due to the fact the current care and treatment plan was not working. During my next visit he suggested trying an Expander. He stated that there would be an additional cost for the Expander and that I needed to see the financial specialist. When the representative pulled up my contract, this appliance was already included in my contract. Thus, again this doctor trying to overcharge for care. I continued with care because the appliance was not an additional fee and I had paid the patient responsibility portion in advance. I did not know much about this appliance so when doing my research I found that it would open my upper arch within a 3-6 week period of time, which sounded great since we have been working this issue for over a year. I was ready for a change and would try anything different than the current plan of action which was not working. The Expander did not move my upper arch and the appliance burrowed into the skin on the roof of my mouth causing inflammation, swollen tissue, and a sore the size of a quarter. When this happened, I immediately began searching for a new orthodontist to finalize my care. Based on guidance from my new orthodontist, he never utilizes Expanders on Adult patients as the window for expansion is lost around puberty with an Expander. However, when getting the appliance removed Dr. Bernuy assured me this happens to a lot of his children patients. When getting the opinion of my new orthodontist he stated he has never had the issue of inflammation, swelling of tissue, and sores with the Expanders he utilizes on any of his patients. My new orthodontist utilizes a more modern Expander. For this reason, harming children with outdated equipment I wanted to warn other potential patients to be leery of Dr. Bernuy and his practice. Currently, I am under the care of a new orthodontist he added a heavy double traction wire and an additional set of power chains. The space between my upper molar and incisors has closed after 2 weeks and my upper jaw crossbite has begun to open.

I visited six specialists (2 dentists, 2 prosthodontists, 1 periodontist, and 1 endodontist) for additional work I needed after my orthodontia was complete. Each one asked, "who did your ortho work?" and made a point of commenting on the outstanding job that had been done on my teeth and bite. But, if a great orthodontist deserves five stars, how do you distinguish someone like Jonathan Kimes? He's from a bygone era when your healthcare provider saw you as a person, not as a set of billable procedures. This was not the 9:00-4:00, three-and-a-half-days-a-week, my-assistant-will-do-all-the-work experience I've come to expect from the dental profession. Dr. Kimes is a perfectionist that went well beyond our originally prescribed treatment plan to make sure every issue I encountered was addressed...and many of those issues were areas where my other providers fell short and Dr. Kimes took it upon himself to pick up the slack! I need to petition Yelp! for a sixth star!

Except Dr Kimes - he suggested braces on the 6 front upper teeth and 8 braces on the bottom. He said he had a great success in similar cases, but there is never guarantee if other teeth might shift during her process and we may need to have a full set of braces after all. Her bite was perfect, she had a few teeth that needed repositioning, so we were excited for less braces and obviously a smaller bill. In 7 months she had a perfect smile! We never needed a full mouth of braces. I could have not asked for a better orthodontist and this entire office for my daughter. They are easy with scheduling and very professional. My daughter was actually looking forward to her visits. Highly recommend!

Although the dentists in the South Austin office are top-notch, they influence the office staff, and I am not too happy about that office. It seems that overcharging patients is normal here. In addition to the 3% for services billed using a patient's credit card, surprise bills are also possible. My health insurance often informs me before About Smiles does. Tiggy charged my card. I specifically asked her if I could alter my payment if I came back in soon. Yes, I was given that option. I returned later with a plan to use a debit card with NO 3% upcharge. Tiggy was busy so Peggy took my second transaction, I asked her if it was difficult, and she replied it was. BooHoo--BTW, Peggy seems like a candidate who does not work with patients much or at all. I apologized to Peggy. I WAS given the option to pay in another form, So I was there to pay with a debit card. Peggy billed the services as credit! Not as debit. Excuse me!! Here I follow the clinic instructions and am still out $23.00!!! I need the money, honey. I am not freely giving About Smiles one. more. cent. I am finished with About Smiles. Highly recommend Dr Shvets, the whole experience restored my faith in dentists. If you've read my…read moreother reviews you'll know I had a poor experience at another dentist for the replacement of an onlay which turned into a crown nightmare. I swapped to the practice after having them adjust the bad crown and when I came in for the semi annual cleaning Dr, Shvets saw an issue on the xray for that bad crown. Which means, new crown. Now this sucked as we all know dental insurance is a freaking joke. Restorative work can only be done once every 5 years and well, the first crown cost about $800 and this one was gonna run close to $2k! The practice gave me a discount due to the initial crown being placed just five months prior. This practice is no longer part of my insurance however, they submit the forms for you which is a life saver. After scheduling the appointment to have the crown replaced, everything went smoothly. Sad that the temporary crown felt better then the old crown and the new crown is much better. Due to not having the original tooth the new crown isn't as close of a match as I'd like but lesson learned about going to someone who is passionate about reconstruction of teeth. I went back to get it adjusted as there was issues flossing where Dr Shvets spent at least 45 min trying to get off along with looping in a few colleagues. Talk about wanting things right! He also adjusted the bite which made a world of difference. They also offered a six year 'insurance' for the crown in case it needs repair. So good news, I'll have two back ups for any issues as I'll be hitting the initial 5 years in Jan 2027. lol They are great at sending reminders and pretty on time for appointments. I just chose a random office online that was close to my house and ended choosing the best. I forgot my dentists name, but he's a man with an accent and long hair (lol) he is sooo amazing, attentive and thorough. It's like he genuinely enjoys what he does and cares about the best choice for the patient. they also worked with me on a payment plan so I didn't have to settle for an option that I really didn't want to do.
