Total cash grab and sleazy, obvious sales game. It's so disappointing the way these modern practices are run. I feel very old saying this but it's so evident. Yes, the facility is brand new and clean. No personality, but clean. Staff was perfectly nice and "well-trained". So to management --- they're definitely doing what you want them to, but your methods are a scam. The doc immediately told me I have all these issues that will cost thousands to fix. Including Invisalign, which I've already done! I've had consistent dental care for the last 20 years by a tenured professional, so it's not like I've been neglecting anything. They didn't review any of my history, neither from my records or the things I literally said out loud to them in person. Message received--- it's not about the patient or proper care, it's about squeezing as much money as you can from every individual and insurance. I can't say enough great things about Dr. Su! She did my Invisalign treatment and cosmetic bonding, and I'm absolutely in love with the results. My smile has never looked better--natural, straight, and exactly what I was hoping for. Dr. Su is not only incredibly skilled, but she's also warm, patient, and really takes the time to listen to your concerns. I also see her for general dentistry and she's just as amazing. I really love this place, and I really wish I didn't because it's so far south for me (haha)! The interior is gorgeous so you feel like you're at a high-end advertising firm or West Elm--not the dentist! The main reason I started visiting Sola is because they are a biological dentist that doesn't use chemicals or fluoride. The reason I stay is because I love the interior, the staff is super efficient and thorough, they send you several reminders before your appointment, and they're easy to schedule with. The first time I went, it was pleasant. Everyone seemed happy. The second time, the receptionist acted different like she was way too busy to talk to me. Things changed in the office. New people were there and scrambling it seemed. Everything was rushed. I asked what I'd be expecting to pay. No real explanation except that they aren't sure because I may need something extra. Okay. So they have no idea? Also, no explanation of what I was being charged for. I go to the front and was expected to pay $400 cash right then. I had to find a credit card and charge it. Then you email them and there's no reply. I went to a different dentist and they asked me to ask Sola for my X-rays. No reply from Sola. I asked again. Nothing. EDIT: Dr. Gent reached out to me to get a better explanation about my experience. He truly does want his practice to be top notch and a pleasing experience for his patients. While I had some issues at the front desk where I wasn't getting a breakdown of what exactly I was paying for, he said there are no excuses for that and he will work hard to fix everything that went wrong. I will tell you that I've been to several dentists over several years and while many make you feel like you can't personally talk to them, Dr. Gent is different. If you have ANY issues with your treatment plan or anything at all, email him, call him, or ask to speak to him. He's kind and willing and ready to fix any issues. I recently visited Sola Smile to have several old mercury fillings replaced. I had some trepidation about the effort, as other dentists that will perform the procedure wanted thousands of dollars more, and their processes were significantly onerous. Dr. Gent took the time to answer every question that we had, and his straightforward answers and professionalism quickly settled my mind. His price was extremely fair, and easily worth the quality of the work that he performed. The procedures were spread over two weeks (the fillings on one side of my mouth the first week, and the other side of my mouth the next week). Dr. Gent and his assistant were extremely efficient and quick as they worked as a team, and I experienced no pain whatsoever. The entire procedure each week required approximately only 15 minutes, and afterwards I experienced no pain whatsoever and was able to eat normally that evening. Dr. Gent displayed great confidence and skill throughout his efforts, and he was a pleasure to speak to. I have been to many dentists in my lifetime, and none has come close the professionalism and skill of Dr. Gent. I wholeheartedly recommend Sola Smile, and we will definitely be returning in the future. read more

I've been wanting to get my amalgam fillings from my teenage years removed for a very long time. It's hard to find a dentist that takes the proper precautions. I know of two others in Austin and they both had year long wait lists. I also don't want a dentist to lecture me about how I need fluoride. Not happening. They don't! They get it. Anyway, the dentist and the hygienist were so friendly and made me feel very good about my teeth. I had the left side done this week and so far so good. My partner had this done years ago and was in a lot of pain afterwards so I was very nervous. In addition I didn't think I would be able to get it done so soon because the quotes I got at other places were literally thousands of dollars. I could actually afford it here. Another bonus: La Croix. Endless La Croix. If I had to complain about anything it would be to prepare the patient a little more for such a long procedure. I knew it would be long but I didn't realize how sore my mouth would be afterwards. I also can't breathe through my nose that well (Austin allergies) and luckily happened to have a decongestant in my purse. Without that I would have been suffering quite a bit as the assistant told me I would need to breath through my nose most of the time. So in a nutshell maybe give patients a heads up and say, "if you can't breathe through your nose you might want to bring something for that and oh, it's gonna hurt like hell when this numbness wears off after having your mouth open for 3 hours. You might want to take some ibprofen." Regardless, I feel it was a 5 star experience and I have new place to call home for my teeth. I will be bringing my kiddo too because of the fluoride free/eco aspect. I've seen other reviewers post that they might be trying to make a buck with what they recommend. The dentist did recommend Invisalign for me and I've never been told that by another dentist but he prefaced it with "I'm going to tell you everything I think you need for the healthiest mouth and it's up to you to do what you're comfortable with." The receptionist gave me separate quotes for everything and explained everything thoroughly. I politely declined the Invisalign and there was absolutely no judgement or pressure. All those other dentists who didn't recommend Invisalign also told me fluoride is perfectly safe and so is having mercury in my mouth. So there's that... read more

So when I understood that I needed bite alignment to prevent future health issues with my gums, I was panicked. I got a new job last year and the dentist I have been with since 1997 did not accept my new insurance. I ended up paying $75.00 out of pocket for a cleaning; I told myself next cleaning I'd look for an in-network dentist. In comes SoLa dental who is in-network, great! I called and was able to get an appointment for less than 24 hours later. Great!! The office is just as described in reviews, very nice and clean. As a new patient you will take several x-rays; and the process does seem a bit excessive, but it is clear they specialize in orthodontic work here so if that's what you're looking for, you've come to the right place. I received a thorough cleaning (which is what i came for), and we discussed getting a quote for invisalign since a few of my front teeth or slightly splayed. My surprise came when I went to check-out and my total was over $100 for a simple cleaning?? That's more than I paid at my previous dentist who was OUT of network!! Come to find out the panoramic x-ray they completed prior to my cleaning is not covered at 100% by my insurance. Had I not had that scan, I would have only been responsible for my copay ($50.00). This is where I have become completely dissatisfied. I was explained that this scan is done every 5 years and done on every new patient in case any Orthodontic work or surgery is needed down the line. I feel that this should have been explained PRIOR to the service being rendered as my initial appointment was for a cleaning, not ortho work. I was told i wouldn't have gotten the quote for the invisalign if i had not had this x-ray done. Well, I would have declined the scan had I known it was completely unnecessary and not a pre-requisite to getting my teeth cleaned. I was not seriously looking to get invisalign, and was simply curious at the price taking into account insurance. I will definitely not be considering it with this office after my experience. It is MY mistake that I did not call ahead to get a run down of what their protocol is for new patients and that is why I am writing this review to advise any potential new patients to make it CLEAR why you are there and what services will or will not be covered by insurance. I work in the insurance industry and this situation is not about misunderstanding the breakdown of the insurance policy. It's about services being rendered unnecessary for a simple cleaning. Again, if you choose this place I'm sure you will be happy with services rendered, but call ahead so there are no surprises. SoLa, my advice to your office is to ASK if they are interested in ortho work prior to completing additional services not covered at 100%. It makes you look shady as a practice if someone is there for just a cleaning. Some people are there just for a cleaning, not surgery or ortho work. Unfortunately, the experience was not what i had hoped for and I will be looking for a new dentist in 6 months and along with doing my due diligence by calling ahead to see what their new patient protocol is and getting an out of pocket estimate prior to my appointment. Obviously the final bill could be more or less, but it is good to get a ball park ahead of time (again, my mistake for not doing it this time around.) TLDR; CALL AHEAD TO GET AN OUT OF POCKET ESTIMATE AND WHAT THEIR NEW PATIENT PROTOCOL IS. While they are VERY thorough, it will come at a price. Make sure it's in YOUR hands what you pay instead of THEIRS by not being properly informed. ***IN RESPONSE TO THE DENTIST BELOW***: Yes, correct, the periapical radiographs are covered at 80%, and bitewings at 100%. This is not where I am frustrated. The additional panoramic scan was absolutely unnecessary for someone going in for a cleaning. It was done, as you say, in the name of being "thorough", but in reality is excessive. Regardless, I just want this review to serve as a warning to others prior to considering your office for car. "It seems to happen to me or my family every time me or my family visits a physician"...This is NOT the norm. No one should go in expecting to pay because they don't understand their policy. If this is your stance, then others should absolutely avoid your practice. read more

AM understands insurance and is willing to walk you through costs based on your coverage. Not a novel concept but I felt they had my best interests in mind as we walked through required work. Additionally, I was in an odd predicament transitioning jobs which led to a hectic follow-up visit with the insurer. Both AM and staff were understanding and patient. I was excited to go over here. New dentist, really close to where I live, etc. However my excitement left quickly after 5 minutes there. I rate this experience similar to imagining when you go to a nice new restaurant, then somehow got food poisoning. THEN, gave them a pass and tried to go back and it was worse. a) Planning is extremely poor - I scheduled a cleaning AND a procedure to fix my chipped teeth. In fact I waited over 1 month for this appointment so I can have these procedures back to back. I confirmed this with my evernote. I EVEN took off of work to have a 10-1230 pm appointment. I EVEN brought my nightguard for him to look at because of the appointment notes. - I arrived and after a quick Q&A, they realized my visit was for something other than what they had on the schedule. - I even called back within 20 minutes to schedule a cleaning ANYTIME later (August, Sept) AND to fix my teeth in any time in the future, but she told me they wont do that. That is crazy. a) Cleaning, then b) Dentist exam, then c) dentist then fixes teeth. b) Front staff doesn't care, highly passively aggressive. - Did not even care if I left. I tried to explain what the expectation was considering I had it documented in my google calendar, yet she didnt 'listen'. She kept talking about how they clean, then exam, then you need to come back. Ok, same story after I called. Look I will not beg anyone to take my business. This is what makes this worse: I even tried to schedule something else. All of this is fine, because my wife was about to have a net $4k - $5k procedure there, but she wont now. I promise that. So in one motion they probably lost net $7k annual revenue for 2014. read more

I'd developed an abscess around a (really) failed root canal performed by another dentist. It was in the middle of the winter holidays, when most dentists take a month vacation. I came across SoLa's site and provided a short description of my situation through their contact form. I got a personal e-mail response from Dr. Gent saying he could see me that week. My first thought was: "a dentist who sends e-mails? seriously?" Anyhow, fast-forward, and I had the root canal redone by a fantastic endodontist whom Dr. Gent recommended, and I've got a new crown that fits so well I can't tell it's there. Gent is such a perfectionist (OCD is good for dentists) that when my permanent crown came back the first time, he wasn't happy with how well it fit, so he just used it as a temp crown until a second (perfectly fitting) one was shipped over. No cost to me of course. Excellent location - literally 5-minutes from my work in downtown. Easy parking. And they open at 8am so I didn't have to miss much work for my appointments. And the e-mails? I have been officially "crown"-ed. It's a pretty long and agonizing process (mostly because it's long), but it helps to have a team of pro's rocking your tooth. Dr. Gent was efficient as always. The crown didn't quite fit as planned so he had to do a lot of adjustments and polishing to it. It was then that I realized how much dentistry reminded me of carpentry, which helped distract me from all the gauze and whatnot's going into my mouth. Very satisfied with my crown. Unfortunately, it probably won't be my last. I also decided for Xmas I need my genetic code rewritten so that my teeth aren't so fricking weak. Sticking with SoLa Dental, yay for stability! ++++ Since my last review, Dr. Gent contacted me to address some of my concerns. He was very kind and professional and was genuinely concerned about improving my experience. It was nice to have that personal touch. My billing issues also got cleared up, which is great. The team at Sola Dental is awesome! I had 2 crowns and two fillings done before I moved out of state. Dr. Gent was fantastic and kindly followed up with me to see if I was feeling okay after getting my temporary crowns were placed. Molly was extremely helpful to explain billing and answer all of my questions throughout the process. I always felt in the know and cared for, which are two very important things I consider when dealing with any kind of medical treatment. I found my new dentist :) I had a thorough, gentle cleaning today at SoLa. They didn't even make me feel guilty about my teeth. I didn't realize my other dental experiences were less than until I visted here. Guilt free dentistry! Their offices are very clean, no dust gathering on the equipment, and everyone I met was nice and calm, and very patient with the whole dental process. If you've ever visited Castle Dental, you know what I mean... I was told about other treatments they offer for that could help my TMJ and migraine issues, but like other reviewers have written here, I wasn't upsold on any unnecessary major dental work. I walked out of there feeling better about my dental health than I have for years. Turns out, I'm in pretty good shape. I'm coming back, and I'm switching my kiddo to this dentist as well. read more

I personally had to have oral surgery (tooth extraction and implant insertion). I went to SoLa Dental and they made a rather unpleasant and traumatic type process very easy to undergo and significantly reduced pain and discomfort with their process and their professional, yet extremely friendly, bed side manner. After the surgery, the staff was second to none with follow up emails and calls to ensure I was okay and that my healing process was progressing positively. To anyone considering a dental professional in the Austin or surrounding area (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio), I have zero reservations with recommending Dr. Gent and SoLa Dental of Austin. Until a few months ago ....the dentist office she worked at on highway 290 W closed and the dentist relocated to another state . Normally I see a different dentist in North Austin, whom I've been very happy with for several years, but I wanted to have a mercury-amalgam filling removed and most dentists are not equipped for this procedure. (Mercury is a toxic heavy metal, so it requires lots of health and environmental precautions.) SoLa is one of the few practices in town that is. I called yesterday and he was able to see me the same afternoon, so I headed south! As Dr. Gent mentions in a reply to another review, there is free garage parking just off Toomey, with first-floor spaces reserved for the retail strip they're located in. Very convenient & hassle-free considering the part of town. You do fill out the patient questionnaire on an iPad, which I think is awesome, and it's all on one page so it really doesn't take all that long. (I've done electronic intake forms at another doctor's office that were basically "input one piece of info, click next, wait 5 minutes for the crappy wifi to load the following page". Not so, here.) Another reviewer mentioned the iPad screen seeming dirty due to having a film--I think they've rectified that because mine was fine. I was expecting just an exam, figured I'd have to come back another day for the actual removal, but as it turns out my existing filling was pretty small so they made time to take care of it for me the same day--yay! Throughout the procedure both Dr. Gent & Jen (dental assistant) were amazing, and even with all the equipment/suits/masks I think it only took about ten minutes. Everyone there is super friendly and professional, and from everything I could tell, they manage to run a tight ship without sacrificing the patient relationship. Overall a fantastic experience...if my dentist ever goes out of business I know where I'll be going! read more

I have seen Dr. Gent several times now. I have had many fillings, and one tooth that has required two onlays done. While most of what he has done for me has been sufficient, I feel like he moves quickly, and not always in a good way. I have had to have a couple of the fillings redone, and my onlay only lasted a couple of years when I'm pretty sure they should last much longer. I just had him redo the onlay today. The procedure hurt like hell for whatever reason. I don't know if he is rushing and doesn't apply the anesthetic properly or what, but it was bad having my teeth drilled on without enough pain reliever. He also shaved off the enamel from one of my few good healthy teeth to fit with the opposing tooth that has my new onlay, but there was no mention that that would need to be done, and he didn't ask me before he did it. Again, it feels rushed. Admittedly, I live out of town now, so I probably need to see a new dentist anyways, but I wanted to continue to see Dr. Gent. After today I don't think I will be. read more

Dr. Gent and his staff are very personable and accommodating. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be seen for an appointment. The office is also well equipped with what appears to be the latest technology in the industry (no waiting for old-school x-rays to be developed). They have been flexible with me when I've had to cancel/reschedule appointments, which I appreciate. They seem to go out of their way to ensure your comfort, like when they offered me a blanket in a cold exam room. My good friend has also been a patient at SoLa, and when he ran into a bit of a billing/insurance snafu, they remedied the issue immediately to make it right. I started seeing Dr. Gent after I moved to Austin from Los Angeles. I had not seen a dentist in almost seven years because of financial restraints so I was extremely nervous about going to the dentist. Fortunately I only had one cavity, but what pleased me so much was that Dr. Gent and his staff were very non-judgmental about my extreme lack of dental care (and my grandfather has been practicing dentistry for almost sixty years - atrocious, I know). They were eager to answer my silly questions (what are those white spots on my teeth? Is my weight loss going to deplete the nutrients from my teeth?) and explained every procedure before they began. Dr. Gent is also extremely thorough. While he was examining my mouth it reminded me of an engineer building a motherboard with an intense attention to detail. It may sound absurd but that thought really crossed my mind during the examination. The office is spotless and when they say "green practice" they aren't kidding. They advertise the use of their mercury-free fillings and BPA-free composites, but their green practices also transfer to their administrative operations. As a new patient I filled out my paperwork on an iPad and I don't think one piece of paper was used through the entire duration of my visit. All in all I had a fantastic experience and I am proud to call Dr. Gent my dentist. I know the future of my dental care is in good hands. read more

Before SoLa Dental, I had not been to a dentist in... well forever and it definatly took its toll on my teeth. The whole reason I called was because of wisdom tooth pain, along with pain that was coming from a tooth that should have been pulled years ago. Plus my teeth is one of my biggest insecurities and I felt like it was time to get that in gear! My first appointment was great, Ashley, the OG front desk girl was really nice and talked to me while I waited to be seen, calmed my nerves a bit. Everyone there was very aware of my high anxiety about the appointment and I was well taken care of. Everyone did their best to make sure I was doing okay. Next appointment it was explained to me what I would be needing to have done to have a healthy mouth again. At first I thought it was weird that we didnt go over anything like that during the first visit, but I ended up really liking how the appointments were set up. I wasnt at all stressed and Dr Gent went over everything with me and answered all of my questions and then Ashley helped me figure out the money issues. Setting up my appointment for my extraction of FIVE teeth was really easy, Molly got back with me right away to set up the date, and emailed me all of the paper work I needed to fill out that day. After it was all filled out, I dropped off the paper work, had a couple of questions and Dr. Gent came out and actually addressed them with me which was really great! So I has my teeth pulled almost a week ago, and every concern I had I knew that Dr. Gent and his staff were only an email or a phone call away. I have never met a doctor so concerned about pt care. (other then the dr. I work for). Im really happy I made the choice to go with Dr. Gent and his staff. (Oh and Ive never had any issues with Molly, I think shes sweet) read more

I really like that when I first called, and I haven't been to a dentist in years, she was really understanding and listened to me. I highly recommend Sola Dental! I have been going there for two years now and am so happy with their staff, the doctor, the assistants and the office setting. Since going to the dentist isn't the most "fun" thing to do, at Sola they make it so much more enjoyable than other dental offices. I really do get the feeling that this company is overcompensating for their lack of experience or, maybe something else. They go the extra mile to reel you in, like give you a great deal on your first visit or hand out free food and drinks in the lobby...but the last few times I have been, I have left feeling scammed and not taken care of. The last 2 visits no one has even come to the front desk for 10 minutes. Things just always seem quite unorganized when I am there. They have also told me and my husband things about our teeth that other dentists have disagreed with, and our teeth are always so much more sore after leaving their cleanings than any other dentist we have seen. These are just 2 of many reasons that we have left their practice. We gave it a good shot, but something about this place makes me feel very uncomfortable. Sorry sola dental! read more

April 8: Rated 3 Stars... I'm in the process of deciding whether to get my dental work done by SoLa. I would love to give them a higher rating - and plan to update this rating after resolving an estimate for an implant and crown. When I had an initial evaluation in February, I had a very positive experience. The receptionist got me in quickly (no weeks of waiting for an appointment), the office was nice, and the dentist and staff were friendly. I was totally blown away by the panoramic x-ray equipment used to confirm the condition of my mouth. I was very excited to work with them and received a fair quote. Flash forward to April... I called my insurance carrier to confirm the approved amounts. Although I received a quote of $2700 for all the work from the dentist, the insurance carrier said they submitted $4600 in costs, including amounts that were never part of the original quote that are 0% reimbursable. Big sticker shock! I'm now working with Molly, who seems very nice, to confirm the necessary treatment and correct price. The jury is out. I will provide an update once I know the outcome. April 9: Updated the rating to 4 stars I talked with Molly and got clarification on the estimate. There were some problems with the initial estimate, but SoLa positively addressed the discrepancies. I feel comfortable moving forward with the treatment. Molly spent 20 minutes going over the treatment plan over the phone. She was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I will provide another update after I receive my implant. August 28: Updated the rating to 4.5 stars (if I could) I had an extraction and an implant over the last few months. Dr. Gent and the staff have been very nice and very professional. It's difficult to find a surgeon who works with zirconium implants. Glad to know we have one nearby! I like the xray machine he uses too. It's easy to see - and understand - what's happening to my mouth. I should get my crown in a few months. Will provide another update at that time. read more

You can reference my review of ORA Dental Studio in Chicago for more details on my recent visit to SoLa which was in early January. My wife and I live in the Cole Apartments and were excited that we have a dentist in the building so we eagerly setup our first appointment with SoLa. Previously we lived in Chicago and used ORA Dental Studio so this was our first dentist visit since we moved to Austin. The office is nice and very modern which gave a great first impression, but that's the only positive about both of our visits. After completing x-rays and the preliminary cleaning for a first time visit, the dentist (Dr. Thomas Gent) came in to review our x-rays and to discuss a treatment plan. For me, he said that I have a few small cavities on my wisdom teeth that need to be addressed. He said that since they're in such a hard to reach place, that my best bet would be to have my wisdom teeth removed. This was odd for a couple of reasons. 1. My previous dentist validated that there was plenty of room in my mouth for my wisdom teeth 2. Removing teeth because of difficulty addressing a cavity sounded bizarre to me. Next was my wife. They said that she remove all of her mercury amalgams and replace them with composite fillings for her general (mercury exposure) and dental health (preventing cracked teeth). The combined out of pocket estimate for our work was around $3,000 which was a major surprise since both of us had gotten such positive feedback from our dentist in Chicago. Immediately I called my dentist in Chicago and told him what happened. In short, he strongly recommended getting a second opinion and directed us to Floss Dental. Today (01-28-16) my wife and I completed our second opinion visit with Floss and were almost in shock at what they told us. For me, they said that I don't even have a cavity on my wisdom teeth, that it's more of a stain that could eventually become a cavity, but something that is easily remediable and doesn't need immediate attention. Other than that, the only thing they said to keep an eye on was a composite filling that would need to be replaced in a year or so. For my wife, they found 4 fillings that have some very minor cracking and recommended replacing them. SoLa was partially right about those, but even the dentist at Floss (Dr. Kimberly Barclay - who was great BTW) said that these weren't do or die repairs. The out of pocket quote from Floss is roughly $100. So to summarize, SoLa was either being disingenuous with us to profit on unneeded dental work or they simply didn't have to acumen to properly address our dental concerns. Both disqualify them from gaining our future business as we'll be going to Floss from now on. read more

The young dentist tried to get me to do a crown a few years ago because he said I had a crack in one of my teeth. When I doubted his analysis he said "Well don't blame me if it falls apart and causes you pain". I was disgusted with his childish statement and attitude. So I went to TWO other dentists who confirmed that there was not a crack so I never went back. That was about 5 years ago and there is no crack. Now despite my insistence that he stop sending me multiple reminders to visit, their office still hounds me. Very unprofessional. I would never go back so he can pay for his expensive equipment.
