I've been eyeing this place for quite a while and went in for the first time last night. I appreciate that they're open late, which is the only time I can make it over there. I loved the clothing selection, but had a strange interaction with the owner that made me feel like I wasn't supposed to be there. Bought something anyway and loved what I ended up purchasing. It was a bit pricey for what I bought, but nicer than what I would've found on Amazon or elsewhere, and I'm all for supporting local business. Summary: The man body shames, is rude, and doesn't understand how shopping for clothes and feelings about your body interact. Long story: I walk into the store around 6:15/6:30 with my two teenage/young adult kids. On vacation and ready to spend. Store opens at 4. Cool store, lots of cool clothing. We are the only people in the store. My kid asks the man at the counter if there are any skirts with pockets. He (with an attitude), says "I'm eating", waves his hand toward parts of the stores to show where the skirts are. I have never been talked to like that and am ready to leave, but my one kid still wanted to look. So we stay. Man sees that one kid and I are done and interprets our faces correctly as ready to leave. He announces that "he's taking a break from eating" (btw his food was in a thermos that could have put the lid back on). He walks over and points to three section of various skirt lengths and goes to return to eat. I tell him that's not what my kid asked for. Kid and i go into other room. Man pulls out a few skirts with pockets. We return to main room where man says he pulled all the plus sized skirts with pockets. My kid is skinny (size M/L); I'm real world 3x. He continues to call the kid plus sized (kid also has an eating disorder history) and talk as fast as he can about what he pulled. Kid is trying to tell him that he's going too fast and to give them a minute. Man starts talking about how he's a size expert. Listen, we are from New Jersey. Nobody talks faster and railroads better than us, but this man couldn't stop and wouldn't listen until I stepped in and told him to give us a minute. The guy is like 3 feet from us and I'm trying to have a convo with my kid. We step into the other room and the man tells us the skirt is from a different room. I literally had to turn to him and tell him to back off bc we are trying to have a private conversation. read more

All the clothes here are polyester (basically plastic, not very good quality) except for the t-shirts, which are pretty overpriced. Expect to spend no less than $30 and upwards of $80 if you want to buy an item here. Service was neutral, guy basically didn't say anything the entire time. He was watching us like a hawk though. My son is really trying to find his own style, not really sure what he likes, and Matthew took the time to take him through everything from jackets to shoes, explaining what all the styles were, finding what he really likes, and selecting pieces for him to try on. Tons of cool, and interesting clothing. Really there is something for everyone remotely alternative. A lot of the clothes are highly detailed, and intricate. Matthew is extremely passionate about the Goth scene, and is extremely helpful when choosing new items, or offering advice. So much Victorian or Industrial stuff, and there's a more affordable section of the store which still has a ton of cool, thrifty stuff as well. Boo. Bad. Burn it to the ground. Matthew was an insufferable pretentious jerk who only stocks small and medium size clothes. When I went to leave, he mockingly said he could bring out the plus size clothes but only if I was serious about buying them. How would I know if I like it if I haven't tried it on or even seen it? Everything was mad overpriced anyway. He also made a rude comment that I should go to a thrift store instead. Apparently because I wasn't dressed goth enough for his taste - despite being head to toe in black - I wasn't good enough to shop here. Okay, I'd rather support women and queer owned businesses anyway. Thanks for saving me the money, now I can support people who actually deserve it. Judging by the negative reviews that go back over a decade, you're just a miserable person who has never changed and apparently doesn't have the capacity for self reflection or growth. Which says a hell of a lot more about YOU than it does about any of the people you judge based on their appearance. I'm honestly shocked that this place is still operational. Considering I was the only person in the shop, it's not like you can exactly afford to turn away business. Dude is clearly a poser and knows nothing about actual goth or punk culture. It's so cringe watching someone gatekeep a culture that's notoriously kind and welcoming. Just because you wear black eyeliner and overpriced raggedy clothes, that doesn't make you a goth or a punk. My experience here was odd to say the least. First, we walked to the door to find that the shop was closed even though it said online that it was supposed to be open at that point, and so I called the store's number to get a clipped answer that someone would be there in five minutes. When the person arrived, they took some time to get the store set up before allowing us to enter which was understandable, although there wasn't much of a greeting. My partner and I began to browse through the clothes in the first room, noticing that there were no labels for different sections of sizes, and the second room seemed to be less organized. I recognized that the items must be high quality for their price, and I ended up getting two tops from the second room which happens to be where the discounted items are kept. The employee did try to get us to look at more items as we were checking out and offered to help us find items in our sizes, but at that point I was ready to leave. It confused me why they would know where the different sizes are kept but not label them in sections for customers to see. As a plus size person, I personally wouldn't return here, but I would recommend it for any smaller alternative-style person. read more

Honestly, I'm not here to talk about the clothes this store sells. I know in many other reviews they discuss how they don't have a particular clothing genre they want, but I personally thought the selection was amazing. The service, on the other hand, was horrible. If you take a glance at any of the good reviews on Yelp, most of them are older and seem to be friends of the owner. I am a 18 yr old girl trying to get into more gothic fashion to reflect my music taste, and I have never felt so uncomfortable in a store than I did in this one. I've seen in a lot of the other reviews that the store owner Matthew was rude to people because they didn't dress up to his standards, this isn't something I experienced, I was dressed very alternatively, what I was very uncomfortable with was his attitude- which has also been mentioned in VARIOUS reviews and I've heard it from multiple people I know personally. I first walked into the store very hopeful to find other people with my fashion and music taste, only to find the store empty. I was confused at first but walked in anyways, assuming whoever was there was probably just somewhere different in the store. About 10 or so minutes after me browsing Matthew walked out of a backroom, he looked pretty annoyed to even see me in there but I assumed I caught him off guard. I said hi to be polite but was met with a glare. I was a little taken back, but brushed it off, figured it was an off day or something. He sat down in the front end of the store and ate cereal which I didn't mind, I get being hungry at work. This was my first time visiting the store, and if you've never been I'll describe the layout to you. You walk in and to your left is the checkout, you're automatically presented with walls and racks of awesome, but cheaply made, clothing. Sort of tucked away into the back of the store is another room, which I didn't see at first. When I did spot the room I wasn't quite sure if I could go back there, it looked like an area for employees or something. I softly asked if I could go back there, I won't lie I was a little anxious and overwhelmed but still wanted to shop, and was met with a frustrated, "yeah, it's a store, isn't it?" with a scoff at the end. Immediately, any respect or excitement I had walking into this store was gone, I felt too awkward to just walk right out the door so I scoffed back at him and continued looking. Just walking around the store was even uncomfortable, I could feel him follow me with his eyes every time I went to a certain rack or looked at something, and every time I walked into the back he would get up and fix the rack I had looked at before (even if I hadn't moved anything). I picked out a few things, and honestly I had questions for him but I didn't even care to ask after our first interaction. I ended up picking out two things, since I'm about 5'0 and petite I couldn't find much here. When I was about to check out he made a snarky comment about how I was walking around the store too much, which made no sense. If this is a store wouldn't you want me to walk around? I didn't answer his comment because I really had no patience to entertain insults from a n old man who clearly had a stick up his ass for no reason. He scanned my two items, which came to almost fifty dollars by the way (that's insane for the quality), and asked me a question I couldn't quite hear, I politely asked him to repeat himself since I just wanted to go and he shouted, "DO. YOU. WANT. A. BAG." very condescendingly. I was honestly so fed up at this point so I responded "NO. THANK. YOU." with the same tone and energy, which I do admit is a bit childish but I can only put up with so much. I was finally out of the store when he ran out after me, trying to convince me to come back in and check out sizes, basically just trying to get me to spend more money. I told him no and walked down to my car. If you're reading this Matthew, just a bit of advice, if you want people to come in your store and spend ridiculous amounts of money on your shitty clothes, maybe try and have some customer service and don't judge people right away instead of being a dick with a stick up your ass before anyone can even shop. I understand my experience isn't as bad as most, but the owners attitude made everything very awkward and unpleasant. I get this isn't you're "normal store" like any big brand chains, but you can at least be kind to the people who are funding your business. If you're thinking about shopping here, I don't recommend it. If you can, travel to Buffalo Exchange in Mass. It's way better and way more accepting. read more

You'll see the sign out on the street near the stairs down to the shop. This store supplies fashionable and high quality gothic, industrial, and fetish clothing and accessories. Though the shop itself is small, it is jam packed with exquisite floor length dresses, well-made lace up corsets, and vinyl pants. . . along with a multitude of other things. Matt is a wonderful and extremely helpful shop associate. He knows his store inside and out. Hand picks the items himself to stock the store. . . great taste! If one thing doesn't fit or isn't exactly what you are looking for he is able to suggest something of similar interest until you find what you are looking for! This store and the owner are both treasures to the community! I wandered in with a friend who was needing some new quality pants for an event we were attending. I was blown away when Matthew had my friend's size and style pulled from each rack showing him the perfect items to try on - he knows every item in that store! He was spot on with the items chosen....just wow! I loved a reviewer who stated THIS IS NOT HOT TOPIC! If you want some cheap black tossed together outfit then shop on Amazon or at your local Hot Topic because this is not that. If you would like to add well fit pieces that are quality - this is where you go. His prices are exceptional as well for the items and he is so knowledgeable about Gothic clothing lines. Honestly, I feel like his selection for you gentlemen is far better than women. I did see quite a few great pieces for us ladies though in a great variety of sizes for us bustier dark clad mistresses of the night. This is great news for men though since with most stores it is the opposite. I have had many a lady friend complain that their gents can't find a good spot for clothing discovery. And my friend for picking out clothes that he thought(out-loud) would be "waay too small for her" at one point he even took clothes out of her hand to look at her and say, "these probably won't fit you." (She tried then on, and they fit fine, but the way. ) At first I willing to buy a pair of $70 jeans, and she was hoping to buy a few shirts. I had them in my hand the whole time. This place gets one star because the clothing was great. Especially the vintage clothing. The owner, Matthew, was an elitist, judgmental ass. I walked out of there feeling completely discriminated against. I walked in and greeted him (Matthew) with a "hello". He completely ignored me. Ok, we all have bad days so I let it pass. After looking for a bit, Matthew decided that I was not good enough to shop in his store. He asked what I thought I was doing in his shop. I explained I was looking for an authentic corset for a costume. He told me that people like me should shop at Halloween stores, not his store. Bedlam is only for people like "him", who dress like "this" every day. Apparently, I was not good enough to purchase his clothing. So I left. Matthew made a judgment about me the second I walked in based on my clothing and hairstyle. Apparently you can only shop here if you are "different"... and by "different" I mean just like Matthew. I'm not entirely sure what happened to the negative reviewers. Maybe it has to do with how I was dressed or perhaps the way I approached him and/or the store but I had a fantastic time here. I travel the country and to say these types of stores are rare is an understatement... so I was glad to find this place. Sure he was quiet up front but as soon as one of us approached the other (I'm not really sure who) it was a fantastic and friendly time. He has great variety of brands and styles, which is something I really appreciate as even my hometown store can sometimes feel a bit pigeon holed at times. He also KNOWS the brand and could talk to me about brands that don't exist anymore and the changes in quality and price over time. This was cool as I rarely get to talk to someone whom does like to talk about those kinds of things... and if they do, also know the brands I'm talking about. Illig what?(I miss you, Illig... I miss you hard...) I digress... I came in planning to buy one or two items and ended up with...5? 6? And left stuff behind I still hope to purchase in the future. He spent basically all evening with me and even stayed after the store was closed and was epic nice about it! Even I don't think I could've been that awesome. I think the prices are competitive for the brand and type of store it is. These brands are not cheap and I don't think he over prices anything which I sometimes feel happens in goth/industrial stores(probably to help keep them open, which I understand.) I've kind of come to expect my pocket book weeping...this time, not so much considering! Spent more than I expected I would but also GOT more. So, unless I just got 'lucky' my advice is to maybe look at how you are approaching the situation. Maybe it is him. Maybe it's you. Maybe it's a combo of both of you. I don't know... but I thought he was great. I DO know that while I was in the dressing room some giggly girls came in and that after awhile he asked if he could help them find anything. They replied in a rude no fashion and promptly exited the store and made some comments I could definitely hear in the alley way that we not the nicest. I had a great experience at Bedlam. Matthew was very helpful and the selection is quite good for a physical store. It can be hard to find a club wear store that services men as well as women but this definitely did and Matthew was very helpful with his suggestions. And he really knows his business. I would like to point out that I came in from work looking like a Ken doll. 6' tall, broad shoulders, tan skin, IBM blue business suit sans jacket and a super cuts hair do. Matthew did not approach me right away or pressure me but he wasn't rude either. After a very short time, I asked him about the layout and what I could find where. Once we started chatting about what I was looking for and he knew I was interested in what his store had to offer it was a great experience. This is not the GAP nor Old Navy. You wont see a center stack of sweaters and Matthew doesn't wear a name tag and a smile. This is a very niche, very specialty store, run by an owner/operator who knows his business cold. We knew of the store in its previous location but wanted to see if they had boots. Checked hours on website and drove out there for the store to be closed. Called the store number listed and was told he'd be there in 5 mins. He opened the doors 30 mins later. He had limited shoe stock so we asked if he had boots in our size. Then he barked at us saying we basically chased him into the store and maybe we should look around. He apologized a few minutes later and proceeded to say there wasn't much in his store for us because he doesn't carry plus sizes. We were shopping for someone who normally wears a medium he kept trying to call a 2x/3x and laughed out loud when i who wears a 3x said i liked some things. He then insisted on showing us almost every item in the store though we only wanted boots an hour worth of awkward fat shaming later we left because the boots we wanted weren't in the right size and wouldnt be ordered. I went into this store not sure what expectations I had, if any. Suffice it to say, I was very impressed with the merchandise and the proprietor was as nice as could be after the initial ice was broken. If you're walking in expecting Hot Topic, you would be so wrong. The boots were quite high quality, durable and reasonably priced. The trench coats and jackets are made of heavy leather and vinyl, so there are vegan clothes options as well. All the clothes were serious business. He was rather rude on the phone when we called about his shop's hours during our travels into RI, and when we finally arrived to his store, he curtly asked us to leave so that he could use the bathroom. While I respect his need to urinate, he had ample opportunity to do so prior to our arrival with no costumers. He should probably hire another worker, be nicer to potential customers and rethink the effects of his actions on his business as we were more than prepared to spend a considerable amount of money each. Rudest owner of a store I have ever met in my life. Wonderful beautiful vintage and goth clothes, but his attitude ruined that place for me. First he ignored us (me and my 2 friends) completely upon our entrance, and I am positive I saw a few eye rolls. I moved some clothes to look at what was on the shelf, I was elated, the clothing was beautiful, but not in my size (being a bigger woman its hard to find cute clothes that are not expensive through the roof and in my size). I still pointed it out to my friends so they could see how beautiful it was. All I heard was, "Oh hunny that is NEVER going to fit you." .. Stopped in for some Valentines Day Ideas for the other half. I have driven by this place many times and had the opportunity to stop in. I almost bought a t-shirt (which is the height of my clothes shopping expertise), and I do thoroughly enjoy the selection of t-shirts on hand (band t-shirts that you would not find most places but online for order). While twirling around the t-shirt rack the owner asked if I was looking for something specific, so I mentioned I was gifting for valentines day and he was all over it. I practically got a full tour of the store and selections, all I had to mention was the size and style I was interested in and we were off. Myself being a guy who does not really care for the activity of shopping, I was quite impressed with how outgoing the owner was in making it an enjoyable experience. I have heard a lot of discouraging things about Bedlam. However, as it is one of the only stores of its kind in the area, I had to give it a chance. I called Bedlam for information about the products they carry. The man who answered the phone was not only rude, but condescending. My in-person experience was just as defeating. I feel as though the remaining independently owned businesses in the Providence area should both help create and sustain a sense of community, particularly those places that cater to goths and fetishists. I am disappointed to see a store with a lot of potential be run so poorly - especially as the need for a store like this continues to grow here. Needless to say, I will not be bringing my business here nor recommending any of my interested friends. I think it is a shame how all of the valid negative reviews (3 separate 1 star ratings) are filtered out. This is the best store I have ever been in. I will be shopping here more often. Matthew really knows his stuff and is passionate about it. He is very nice and helpfully, but not that fake help you get in most stores. He will help you for as long amount of time as you need, my girlfriend and I were there for 3 hours and he was there helping us, and didn't get frustrated. Looking at the other reviews, there's a little too much salt in this stew! Thought I'd write one to even it out. No matter how you feel about the owner personally, this store is an absolute treasure. If you care about gothic fashion or quality clothing at all, you will love it. Sure the placement and layout of the store is odd, but I found it more interesting and more of an experience because of it. The owner himself, sure knows his stuff. He's an absolute historian on gothic fashion, speaking to him was an education. The first time I came into the store, was when my at the time partner introduced it to me. We were two young broke gay kids, and I definitely felt a little icy reaction from the owner. Who completely ignored us. But inside my little emo heart, I've always wanted to look and dress like a Victorian vampire lol. The second time I went to the store, was with a friend who dresses gothic on the daily. The owner jumped up as soon as he saw her, and was extremely helpful to her, finding sizes, finding dresses for her etc. The third time I went, was with my new partner, I introduced him. That time we both got the attentive service, as we were both buying several items a piece. My feeling is, there are a lot, a *lot* of people who come in, not looking to spend, and not feeling that the high quality items are worth their prices. I think you're more likely to get that reaction if you don't have a single piece of clothing on that slightly resembles what's in the store. Or if you're in a large group, you're more likely to be ignored as window shoppers, which let's face it, you probably are. This store isn't McDonald's, it's not Urban outfitters, you're not going to be greeted with a McSmile and a McPology no matter how you behave. And you're not going to loudly stomp through the store, making fun of the clothing, buy nothing and get a smile and "please come again!" It may hurt your feelings a bit if you've been wrongly judged as one of these types, but the place is still amazing, so it is what it is. read more

I recently went in this store with a friend. The associate working immediately judged us for entering into the store because we we're not wearing Gothic clothes and told us with disdain that "The Salon is upstairs." After we brushed off his rude comment, he continued to point out (because it wasn't obvious) that "This is a Golthic Clothing Store." My friend and I looked at him and said, "Yes, we know." and proceeded to look around the store. After being in store for at least 5 more minutes after our first rude encounter with the associate, we continued to look around at a rack of band t-shirts. The associate decided that we obviously we not fit for this store and decided again to mock us by saying "You're not going to find any 'Main Stream' bands like you're used to listening to in there. This rack is punk and metal and you'll hardly know anything in there." Disgusted by his comment, the friend I was with turned to him and said, "I may look main stream, but I'm not." To that he replied disgustedly , "Yea, you do." After that I left the store. Clearly, this store is ONLY for Gothic people. Though for future reference, from my experience, the key to good business is NOT BEING RIDICULOUSLY RUDE AND JUDGMENTAL TOWARDS POSSIBLE CUSTOMERS. read more

The store owner was rude, unhelpful and elitist. He also opened nearly an hour late. While I was there, my friends and I enjoyed looking through the clothing (although the corsets are a nightmare -cheap fashion corsets that aren't sized by band/bust size) and wanted to try on a few things that were definitely out of my price range (poor college kid life does that to you), but were interesting and could, in another life, be a lot of fun to wear or own. There was some clothing that I was on the fence about buying -I'm on a very strict budget, but had the owner been less rude I might have actually bought some items, like I had over at Spectrum India, because the clothing was high quality though pricey and the salespeople made me feel happy and wanted in the store. However, his demeanor and comments made me feel humiliated and incredibly uncomfortable, and he treated my friends as poorly. When we walked to the store (after being nearly an hour late opening), he told us that "it would be another five minutes to set up". Which was fine. But then he continued "are you sure you want to wait another five minutes for a goth store?" because apparently wearing light colors or shorts in 80 degree weather absolutely means that the people in question are still not interested in or would not enjoy gothic/industrial style clothing. Additionally, there was a sense that he expected us to try to shoplift from the store (comments like "you do know that you have to show me the items you want to try on, right?" etc). When I wanted to try on a pair of shorts and a leather sleeve/strap thing (that was $65), the owner told me "I overheard you say that you'd want your mom to send you some extra money to be able to buy anything here, are you sure you can buy it?" to which I said "I'd just like to try it on" and he kind of sat there quietly judging and then said "oh. so for fun". Because apparently having fun is not a thing young, mildly poor, carefree people are allowed to do with their lives. I simply said yes, and then went over to the "changing room" -which is a glorified piece of tarp, but felt so uncomfortable that after putting on the sleeve I just put it back and left the store. Never going back. And my friend, who's been looking for a cheap military surplus woolie pullie/sweater refused to go back and buy the okay quality $18 sweater they had, even though the navy surplus up the street has them for $30 because the store owner made her so mad. Okay clothing, sometimes great prices and some beautiful pieces but honestly I'd rather buy online than go in and deal with that asshole. read more

Definately not the customer service I was expectingWe weren't even greeted when we walked in the store.The owner was busy with his nose in his paper.After awhile of browsing the clothing, he proceeded to pick up a personal phone call and began to talk negativly about myself and the two girls I was with.Saying he "couldnt hear his phone call over our giggling and to please stay on the phone with him as his store was filled with "old navy girls in their blue jeans"...and so on.One of us had asked him to not talk about us,his customers,who are standing nomore then 2 feet away(literally). He asked "why are you listening in on his personal phone call".This coming from the store owner himself.Needless to say we walked out of there with a different outlook.
