I've now been to the Hamptons twice, and each time, we try to find some windmills. I just love…read morethem, and I think I love the adventure of finding them as much as I do looking at them. On this most recent visit, we found the James Corwin Grist Windmill, built in Sag Harbor in 1800. It is the smallest and second oldest of the 11 remaining windmills. This windmill was moved to its present location in Water Mill in 1814 by James Corwith and operated as a mill until 1887. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Madoo Conservancy presents a microcosm that flows along walking paths through different aspects of the 2-acre plot of land, all the while focusing on the plant life that Dash has cultivated since the garden's conception in 1967. Dash's garden presents a fundamental attitude -- plants are the dominating forms, structures are secondary. Madoo is a space ever changing, with seasons, new plantings, and repainting of outdoor furniture and structures to reflect the magnificent horticulture that thrives here. The garden is open every Wednesday and Saturday from the beginning of May until the end of September, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Admission is $10.00, which fee is used for the garden maintenance. Photographs are permitted; strollers, dogs, children under the age of 6 are not. Separate tours may be arranged for groups of 10 or more.

It was erected by the citizens of Sag Harbor in 1966 as an historic memorial to the whaling industry. The original was constructed in 1760 and actually stood 50 feet west of this site. Even though this is not the original windmill, it still looks like one and qualifies in MY mind as a bonafide windmill... and served as a good excuse for me to take photos !!

The entire business district of the whaling port and writer's colony is listed as Sag Harbor Village District on the National Register of Historic Places. Husband and I were having an appetizer and cocktails at an upscale restaurant called Dopo La Spiiaggia when we noticed the park across the street. When we were done we took a stroll through the memorial park. It's a clean safe park where families were riding bikes, exercising, playing frisbee, having picnics and casually walking and chatting. The marina right on the edge of the park is peaceful, tranquil and beautiful. This village is very dog friendly but pets are not allowed in this park and I am confessed as to why not. I love and appreciate Sag Harbor, it has a very impressive history.

When you walk in there is a gift shop with very pretty objects. This museum is not big by any means but its a good size and has a few exhibits. One exhibit we saw was kAWS which I loved. This museum also has a cafe where you can get snacks and drinks. They also have some seating there. This museum is on a great piece of land so it has greenery all over. The staff here were nice and helpful.

Many cute local shops downtown, including nice local home furnishing and accessory stores. You can get almost anything you want shipped too, which is great because you can find some unique items out this way. Another great plus is that you won't find all the typical chain stores that have flooded San Francisco. Here it's locally owned shops, boutiques and restaurants. It's clean, safe, and really pleasant with all-Americana feels. I'll save my commentary on the contrasting state of most American cities these days lol. My one suggestion would be to allow a bit more time here. I'm always thinking that an hour or so would suffice, but I usually end up wishing I had allowed a lot more time. I'd suggest maybe spending a leisurely afternoon of lunch, shopping and a cafe.
