Located in strip mall just north of the former Livonia Mall. From the outside it looks like a typical Michigan liquor/party store. Inside is a long wall of liquor, a few large shelves of wine, and lot of shelves and coolers of beers. There is a also a large growler fill station with a number of high quality beers for the fill. The staff was nice, they let you form your own 6 packs and cases with a 10% discount over the price of singles. They have a lot of rarer beers. The only downside was that the rarer beers are more pricey than standard. For example, the Griffin Claw 2020 Chocolate and Almond was $29 for a 4, where when other places had it, it was 25. On my last visit things were alot brighter shelves were stocked, clean and dust free.. seems like they reorganised the shelves a bit and I love that they have local growlers on tap! Ken loves to try new beer, which can be an expensive 'hobby' if you do it at a bar/restaurant or, even worse, buy a 6-pack from the store only to realize it tastes like shit. Well, enter BB where you're encouraged to customize your own 6-pack from their huge (and I mean an entire row) selection of singles. And I ain't talking that Bud Light piss either. Most if not all of the Michigan breweries are represented. Yeah, you'll pay for the luxury of six different beers, even with the 15% discount (most singles are $2-3 each)... but you'll also very likely find some new favorite(s). The owner is great too. If you ignore the strip mall surrounding and traditional liquor store propaganda outside, you'll be greeted with a fairly large selection of beer. They boast over 1,000 different single bottles, which is truly a worthwhile distinction in the area. Unfortunately, many of those bottles are covered in dust, have "incorrect" price tags, or are generally unorganized. They also offer a 15% off mix and match sixer, which is what attracted me in the first place. However, I was told that it doesn't apply to "special" beers. In this case, my "special" beer was a M-43. Now, don't get me wrong, M-43 is a damn good beer but the stack (and I mean stack) of those beers in the cooler indicate they are not in limited supply. 5 star for selection, less one for cleanliness, less one for head scratching promotional tactics. read more

Beer, beer, then more beer! Their enormous selection of singles is the draw here. Several aisles stocked full of craft beer, especially Michigan brews. You'll find everything you expect, plus a lot of stuff that you might not. It's definitely nice to see some uncommon offerings. My gripe with Beer Baron, though, is their prices. Even with the 15% discount, that BYO six pack is going to cost you! If you're picking up anything outside of the mainstream crafts (the stuff you'd find at any given liquor store), then you're looking at $5-10+ a bottle. No exaggeration. Sadly, even the beers that aren't rare or exclusive are priced well above average. I want to love Beer Baron. I really do. Their amazing selection certainly makes it easy to love them. In fact, if you walk into Beer Baron you'll probably find rare and hard-to-find items that have long since sold out at other stores. Then you'll take a look at the price and after you push your eyeballs back in their sockets you'll understand why the beers are still here... a 25%-50% mark up from said other stores. Want to buy singles? No problem! Beer Baron breaks everything down into singles and will happily sell the independently liberated bottles to you for the low low price of highway robbery. Though to their credit if you mix and match a six-pack you'll get a 15% discount, bringing the price down to simple extortion. All the pricing issues could be forgiven of it weren't for this last part. I have bought some flat out BAD beer from Beer Baron. I mix-n-matched a heftily gouged sixer of rare items and 4 of the 6 beers turned out to be well past their prime. Thing is, three of those four beers were very high in alcohol content (8%+) and should have held up just fine to a bit of age, if properly stored. However as these were all total drain pours, they clearly are not doing something right here. I would only recommend buying beer here if you know for a fact it was just recently released (or has a clearly visible born-on/drink-by date). Also, I would advise you look elsewhere first as you can probably find what you are looking for much cheaper. And don't get suckered into the illusory 15% off shell game. Wow. I am a total idiot for not stopping in here sooner. When I first heard about this place I wrongly thought it was a brew supply place. Then I found out it wasn't but just never stopped by for one reason or another, until today when I pulled my self out of my own ass and caught the sign as I was driving by. To say this is a beer store that happens to sell wine and liquor is the truest thing in the universe. This is a delightful inversion of every other alcohol mart. White is black and black is white at Beer Baron. Put another way, instead of row after row of snobby unaffordable wine with a few token sixers thrown about and maybe a couple local brews in the one cooler, like most MI party stores, you probably have 2/3 of the store devoted to beer here. Put still another way, all other places that sell beer around here suck compared to Beer Baron. Don't let the nondescript strip mall store front fill you with doubt. There's 20 cooler doors, a walk in room behind a cooler, and 4 or 5 aisles of beer including the six level on both sides make 'em yourself 6 pack aisle. If they don't have or can't get what you want go back to your home planet and drink your alien brew there and quit scouting Earth for colonization! The variety and depth of what's available is really hard to over state. Do you hate when a place has thing x from a brewery but doesn't have any other styles from the same place? I sure do. Here they often have 2-3 or even the whole line up that the brewer offers. Looking at beer here often has the surrealistic quality of looking at a brewer's web site with some really kick ass VR goggles because most of the time the internet in the only place you are going to see all those beers in one spot. When I walked in the employees were highly engrossed chatting away with either customers or friends. Still I was asked within a minute or so in a really low key no pressure way if i had any questions or needed any help finding anything. This was really nicely done. It seems so many things with any hint of uniqueness or quality in the Detroit area get infected by the Hipster Dbag-R1A1 virus so that staff can't be bothered to lame-i-fy themselves enough to actually acknowledge your presence. The CDC would rate this place completely virus free! Please stop by here even if you're busy. Don't be like me and let your pointless procrastination deprive you of a wonderful beer shopping experience, and yes as corny as that sounds that is really what a trip to Beer Baron amounts to. read more

I am a beer afficiando have been to a lot of wine/beer shops in Michigan. Beer Baron is by far my favorite because it is a beer shop first and a wine and spirits store second. Most places that sell craft beers specialize in wine, and beer is an afterthought. Beer Baron has an amazing collection of singles and you can build your own six-pack for 15% off. This is a fantastic way to try new beer without having to invest $10-15 in a six-pack. Every beer in the store is available in the singles aisle, which spans 6 entire shelves! Beer Baron's speciality is Michigan beer, and they have the best collection of Michigan craft beer that I have seen in Metro Detroit. They also have a good selection of imports too, if that is your thing. If there is something that you can't find they will be happy to order it for you. Prices seem to becompetitive with area stores that also stock craft beers - though it is not completely apples to apples since they stock so many brands and styles that I simply cannot find, Darren, the owner, is extremely friendly and helpful. He is also extremely knowledgable on beers and has given me many excellent recommendations based on my tastes. If you love craft brews, stop in the Beer Baron. We moved away from Detroit about four years ago for a job, and we've missed being there ever since. While we were back for the weekend late last year, we decided to check out the local brews at Beer Baron and were AMAZED. We love this place!! The first time we were there, we chatted up the owner for a while and talked about how we moved from Detroit to Kansas City, how much we miss being home. Flash forward to two months ago, we were notified that Beer Baron SHIPS!! We were even more amazed. All you have to do is email the store your order along with a copy of your drivers license to verify age and they will contact you for payment. Shipping took a little under one week with UPS. We were a little worried about shipping glass bottles halfway across the country, but everything was packaged very well. I think they still have some kinks to work out with the shipping service, but this will come with time. They have wonderful customer service and are so great to work with! We will continue to order and have a taste of home shipped to Kansas City every month! We have told all of our friends down here about Beer Baron. Thank you guys!! read more

I live rather close to this store, so if it was anything other than awful I would certainly frequent it. I've given it several chances and each time it's been nothing shy of annoying or disappointing. The customer service sucks. Today, for example, I entered the store and found the worker (presumably the owner?) leaned on the counter talking loudly on the phone. No acknowledgment of my presence... ok fine, whatever... I don't need you to greet me when I walk in, but many stores chose to do so because it's courteous to your customers. I searched around and found the bottle of wine I was looking for... had to loudly set my item down on the counter so the guy would acknowledge I was ready to pay. Still chatting away on his phone, he rang me up without a single word to me. Stuck his hand out for payment... again, not one word to me... plenty of words to his very important guest on the phone however. Handed me back me card and mumbled thanks and went right back to his phone conversation. Seriously? That's poor form. Do yourself a favor, drive the 1 mile north or south and go to another liquor store. May I recommend the one on the southeast corner of 6 & Middlebelt or the north side of 8 mile just west of Middlebelt. They're both great. This guys place is a joke. read more

Here we go again. I'm truly dedicated to my craft beer mission. I'm also very curious about new beer stores since they are all so different! Beer Baron certainly lived up to the hype. It's a small store with a whole lotta beer. They carry several beers from MI breweries that I haven't seen before. They carried more of each MI brewery than I've seen for single bottles. Tonight I picked up another beer from Greenbush Brewery, Oskar Blues, and Crankers. I've only seen Greenbush at one other place so far & they only had Closure Ale. At Beer Baron, they had at least 4 different Greenbush Brewery beers. I haven't seen (or at least noticed) Oskar Blues or Crankers at other places, but it's entirely possible that I didn't see it. They also had a great 22 oz. selection of beers. There were plenty of craft beer 6-pks in the coolers to choose from but I didn't see any single bottles. I briefly looked at the wine. It's a small section but they had about 4-5 kinds of Kuhnhenn wine. I wish they had their beer! I thought the prices are kind of high. As others have mentioned, you get 15% off when you mix your 6-pk. My 6-mix plus a 6-pk of Bear Republic Racer 5 was still $30. I am definitely impressed and will be back! read more

I don't know how else to say it, besides to be torn about the business of the Beer Baron. When you first walk in, you are greeted by a happy staff member that knows quite a bit of their beer. And then it hits you.. you are completely overwhelmed with the selection of craft brews from everywhere. Aisles and aisles from here to there with beer aplenty. However, there is always one issue. After you pick up your jaw from the ground after realizing just how much beer this little place has packed in there, you realize that the price for selection of beers is definitely shown on the shelf. The Beer Baron has a great option of "Build Your 6-Pack" which is a great idea, however it comes into the range of paying too much for a 6 pack of craft beer when you finally tally everything up. The better, well known beers aren't really discounted, in fact they are priced right along with the harder to find beers. One would think that a local brewery wouldn't cost much money for having their brews located here, but you're wrong. I'm a fan... but you end up coming in here and paying for it in the long run just because you appreciate good beer. There are new places popping up that are going to give this place some competition.. and I'm very interested to see if they are going to stay the same or get with the times. Wish I could 5 star this place but the fact is there is insane price gouging going on. Unfortunately, with the selection they have, your left with no other choice but to just ben... Pros: Selection of beers is pretty great! Cons- Prices are astronomical -check labels for out of date beers. I was in here today to pick up some plead the fifth, which they of course have. The usually happy worker must've pled the fifth on conversing with humans today because damn was he grumpy. It kind of took me back to when your best friend would piss you off in middle school and you aren't going to ride your bike home to avoid the situation. You just sit there stubbornly soaking it in despicing the presence of each other and waiting for the other to apologize. Only difference is I was quite happy about acquiring this beer and he should have been quite happy about acquiring half my paycheck... :-/ This is the go to place for finding the white whale for me. If someone has a better store please message me and I'll be super gracious. Here are some comparisons. Arcadia Shipwreck- 7.99 at other stores. Beer baron- 9.99 New Holland Night Tripper- 4 dollars LOOSE. Beer baron- 17.99 for a 4 pack! Go to make your own 6 pack and your jaw will drop. The incentive is 15 percent off. I would avoid this. It'll save you 1-2 dollars but every beer your buying, your being charged 1-2 dollars more than other stores. Obviously they need to make a living, but is there no middle ground? In closing, this store is really summed up by "great a selection, bad prices." read more

I don't know what took me so long to finally walk through the doors! My neighbor and I exchange craft beers all the time and he kept urging me to go here. Needless to say, this place is like the beer mecca of the world. I probably spent an hour just walking around not knowing what to do with myself. Unfortunately, I have acquired a taste for some of the more expensive beers and sometimes being able to purchase just one bottle for a taste is nice. This place is great! Selection is amazing and they break everything down into singles to build your own six pack. They carry anything available in Wayne County and will order any weird beer you ask for if it's available. Not sure where the price complaints are about, the prices are fine. The singles are individually marked up more because half the store is dedicated to single bottles, then they give 15% off for sixers and 20% off for a case. Why are people complaining when they get to buy six different beers from an insane selection. It's supposed to cost more. If you want to buy a six pack for $16 of some strange IPA and you don't like the first bottle, enjoy looking at the other 5 and think about how much money you saved. The store is usually pretty clean unless it's delivery day, it's a pretty packed store so it's understandable there's some boxes to walk around. I was a little apprehensive when I first pulled up to BB since the store is kinda small and therefore didn't appear to me that it could have much of a craft brew selection. I am glad to say that I was wrong. BB has a fine selection of micro and craft brews with a heavy emphasis on local stuff at the same or cheaper prices than I've seen elsewhere. Go there as a last resort. Yes, they have a very large beer selection and a lot of rare seasonal beers. However, most have been there for a long time, and are marked way up in price. Place was dirty, broken glass on floors, cluttered isles and sticky floors. Some of the beer was over a year old. Make sure you check the brew dates on the bottles. BEER DOES GO BAD. They are there because they want to make money, not because they care about good beer. If you want good beer or beer that's not expired and overpriced go to Meadows in Farmington Hills or Wine Castle in Livonia. Reasonable prices and good selections. read more

I write this review as I drink a Green Flash Palate Wrecker purchased from Beer Baron in mid-September with a "Best By 8/26/14" stamp on it, and it makes me think about the Saugatuck Neopolitan Milk Stout that I purchased from there at the same time. The owner said, "I just got this in!" I remember when I got home I noticed a bottling date of 3/2014 stamped on each bottle. See a pattern here? So he happens to have a huge selection, but it would appear some of it is a little old. Then I think about my other annoyance with the place: overpriced beer. I spotted some cold singles of Strawberry Shorts Cake at the checkout, and added one to my order. It was $3.99. Beer Baron, get over yourself. I bought a six-pack of that same beer at a grocery store in Bellaire for $10.69. I know you're not paying that much for it, so you're just taking advantage of your customers. read more

This is my go to place for beer. Darren is extremely knowledgeable and always has great recommendations. They always knows the release dates of the MI breweries they offer. It's nice to know through their FB page or by stopping by what is about to be released. Thier Michigan beer selection is amazing especially thier Short's selection which is harder to find around the area. If they don't have what you are looking for they are more than happy to get it for you. I went on a trip to the DR last year and fell in love with a specific rum. I asked them to order a bottle and 2 weeks later I had it in my hands. Now they stock it continuously so I can alway find my little reminder of paridise. I always go in there for one thing and come out with 2 or 3. This place is a must for beer snobs and geeks alike! read more

After almost 2 years of not being in the store, I tried checking in on Yelp to get my 15% off check-in coupon, but I was told by owner that it is only good towards choosing 10 different single brews to promote trying new things.
