Interesting space, cool venue, and good beer selection on tap. I love following the store pug. The arcade section in the back is pretty cool. When I first visited this place (months ago), I wasn't super impressed with their own beers. However, definitely some improvement over time and their own beers are decent; with a few really good ones. It is very conveniently located with a few food options right besides the place. It has a very Durham beer scene feel to it. There are a few outdoor seating spaces (not many so grab them fast). Overall: would recommend. read more

Pros: The space is big and open and great if you have a larger group. It'd also be a fun spot to go if you wanted a more intimate setting between just a few people. Very diverse seating options. The beer selection is great and priced well! A lot of the 16oz pours are $5. There are tons of games. My group played Jenga, which is always fun. There are also pinball machines and other arcade games in the back. And of course, I love any place where dogs are hanging out :) Cons: I know I sound old, but the music was too loud! I spent a couple hours there and by the time I left, my voice was almost gone. For such a casual atmosphere, the music does not need to be so loud. I will say, the music choices were spot on, however. Just turn it down a few notches! I was also disappointed with the service. The bartenders weren't rude per say, but definitely not interested in interacting with customers. They were off putting both times I went to the bar and certainly not friendly. For a place like this, you'd expect some hometown charm, and I definitely did not get that vibe. Overall, I'd go back if a group invited me, but I'd never seek it out on my own. Wow. What a great new place. Huge selections of drafts and bottles, arcade and kids place in back, open windows in front. And beer facts!! Beer Trivia was last night. I got the Rosemary tart beer and it was delicious. They had the British chocolate double stout on draft so I got that too. Super kid and dog friendly. So excited to have a Beer Study location closer to home! I have now been a few times and I love the space. Not a fan of the parking situation for any of the restaurants and shops in this particular location and but somehow always manage to find a space. Beer Study's bottle shop always have NoDa and beers that I can't often find at other bottle shops in Durham and I have driven into Chapel Hill solely to pick up a beer that no other shop had. To now have a Beer Study so much closer means I have a new place to be a regular at! ;) I've also discovered the amazing on-tap list and the electronic screen that keeps you up to date on how full each keg is. A red, less than 1/2 full keg picture means you better grab that beer while you can! The space itself is very nice with a garage door to let some sun and fresh air in. This became necessary during the recent HopCakes release which was such a popular event that I had to really work to elbow my way to the front counter. I also really appreciate the Chapel Hill Ram and Durham Bull image toasting one another along the main wall and will plan to attach a picture. Super friendly and helpful pub and bottle shop with a progressive feel. Upon walking up to the door the first thing one notices is a banner stating "Refugees welcome here" ! Once opening the door you are amidst isle after isle of bottles of beer from all over but I noticed much of the concentration comes from local micro-breweries. To your left s a bank of supermarket sized coolers where one can pick out cold/ ready to drink selections-- and the selections are organized by brewery. The seating wraps around a communal area with the rear facing wall is bar seating with close to 40 fresh on tap beers from local favorite pubs. There is even an electronic beer menu that even reports on the level of the keg they are pouring from sothat is lets you know if they are about to run out of your favorite selection, or if they just put a new one on so you know which is the freshest! The front wall is glass and on rollers so that on pleasant days that wall disappears up into the ceiling- so cool. But wait...there's MOREInside this location is a stand alone Starpoint Microbrewery featuring some of the best truly balanced beers that I have tasted. While I was there I fell in love with the Starpoint "DUH" which is what I would describe as a Belgian style wheated (and rye) unfiltered double IPA! Damn that was good. I was told that the unfiltered wheat gave the hops oils something to cling to so that even though the IBU's came in to nearly 88 (8%ABV) I never got the sensation that it was a one-sided hops bomb. Truly balanced. The head brewer at this location is a fellow to watch 'cause this guy's going places. There is not one of his beers that are shy of amazing. OK, back to Beer Study-- there's even more! A gaming room area with classic pinball and arcade selections like skeeball and air hockey. Now they don't serve food at this location so that means it is pet friendly --aaand Across the street are several eateries so bringing in food is encouraged. OK, so it is in a small strip mall and parking could be a challenge on their busiest days. And my biggest peeve is that the brewery part doesn't advertise so with so many beer choices in the area who's going to know that they even exist? Beer Study is my new favorite place to grab a pint in Durham. The atmosphere is absolutely everything you'd want from a casual bar- cozy, interesting, lots of different seating arrangements to encourage conversation, comfortably lit, with an easy-to-read digital beer display and TONS of beers on tap. It's fairly reasonably priced, has a good size bottle shop, and a neat, well-stocked game room in the back. The only thing that would make it better for me would be a pool table or two! I would actually be here a lot more often if I didn't work nights. I honestly wish they were open a little later, the place always has a good crowd at closing time so I know they could do good business. read more

Beer Study was the best part of an otherwise awful work-related trip to Durham. Don't be fooled by the strip-mall location-- This little place is packed with tons of fun and great beer. Staff is knowledgeable, selection is great, dogs are friendly, and should you choose not to study beer, there is wine on tap and an impressive selection of ciders. I stopped in here with a few friends on a Saturday afternoon thinking that it wouldn't be crowded because they have yet to have their "grand opening," but like any new place in Durham it was hopping. And there's several good reasons that people come here-- they have lots of good beers to choose from, it's reasonably priced, and it's a cool place. They haven't gotten the games hooked up yet but there will be a back area with an arcade and there was a nice faux fireplace that we sat next to. Also, as Anthony mentioned, it is dog friendly and there are tons of cute dogs running around. They seem to have a lot of cool events coming up so check out their Facebook page to find out more about those. You can also get the Boot or Thai Cafe delivered or you can walk across the street for Nanataco or Q Shack so there's a lot of great food options. Overall, I am super excited to go back as it fills a void in that area of Durham as a new neighborhood bar! read more

Newest beer makers in Durham, and these guys hit the 27707 ground running. It is a combo beer shop, with emphasis on regional beers. But the real draw for me is the tap lineup. The back wall is a flat screen that overwhelms with all of the beers on tap. It was like looking for a flight at O'Hare! (See what I did there). Starpoint has been brewing for a while I think over near Tarholia, and their offerings are diverse and provide mature flavors and blends. I preferred their hopped up options, especially the Duh! And kudos to naming wizard. "Hipster or Hobo"? It is what you get when wardrobe from thrift store. Also a nice edgy hop vehicle. And oh. My. Gosh. The outside offerings are numerous and varied. I enjoyed a sour and fantastic bourbon barrel aged somethingorother from Wicked Weed. Guys doing the tapping are very friendly and eager to please. The setting is comfy blend of shiny-slick and grunge. Board games, rock em sock em robots and a small foosball game are scattered about. I am not sure if they offer food beyond chips, but that may be smart. Plenty of options to eat within a few steps of the front door. read more

I'm an academic, so obviously, I love to study! And I require beer to survive my grad program. I love both Beer Studies, but this Durham location is my favorite just because it feels special when I make the trip from Carrboro. I also love that they use real glasses here, and I adore the garage doors that let light in to brighten up the many shelves adorned with an amazing selection of local, national, and international craft beer. They always have a wide selection on draft, and they're located near some delicious restaurants that are more than willing to pack up your food to go, so you can enjoy it with a brew or two. This space is fun, welcoming, and one of my faves in the Bull City! Recently, Beer Study Durham did one last Mystery tap takeover which speaks volumes to their commitment to local breweries and the Triangle beer community. This location also boasts an impressive selection of Starpoint beer, the brewery that claims this location as their taproom. Y'all can't go wrong here! read more

But the staff is rude every time I go, and it is beginning to seem like a feature and not a bug. And they play comically bad music very very loudly. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" I don't think Aristotle was talking about the love child of Starpoint Brewing and Beer Study but Beer Study Durham is a great example of how two business come together to create another great space for Durhamites to hang their Durham Bulls hat. What Sam's Bottle Shop in SoDu lacks, Beer Study has them in spades. Great space to chat, games galore, beers on tap, and to take home. You can bring in your human and furry children as long as they are well trained. You are allowed to bring outside food but please think of the staff and if beer is not your thing, they carry a wide selection of wines and cider. Really the only downside to this place as with many places in this growing city, is parking. This area is known for its lack of parking but this place is worth that small hassle. With super friendly staff and a great selection of beer, I highly recommend this neighborhood gem. read more

Beer study is my favorite place to go to get beer. They have a diverse tap list, including beers they make in house. The beer for sale is some of the best in the area. I love New Anthem and Wilmington Brewing and Beer Study frequently carries them in stock. I think prices are fair and comparable to other stores. I'm always satisfied with the service there. Sometimes their will be quite the crowd and not enough hands to serve, but it is what it is. Bartenders remain patient and focused on the customer. Finally, there is the arcade. It's a nice added entertainment piece you don't get at most places. Sunday's they have a good deal on the games. Overall, from selection and service, to tap take overs, music, and special events, Beer Study is my go to place for my beer needs. read more

The service is usually okay unless you're stuck with the woman who usually wears a blazer and the guy with glasses and punk vests. Chill place for beer - amazing selection - with your Dog! Only place I know where the dogs have as much fun as the people

Came here Wednesday of last week, and we picked out three large bottles from the cold cases to purchase to take home. They have a great selection of beer. A line was growing at the bar for the beer on draft. We walked up to the separate registers thinking that would be where you would check out beer to go and other merchandise. We ended up standing there for about five minutes while no one even acknowledged our existence. Does more than one person work at this place? The person serving beer from behind the counter kept serving people lined up at the bar. If you are supposed to purchase refrigerated/shelved beer from the bartender then that should be made clear instead of having separate registers at the end of the bar. After waiting we decided to leave so we put the beer back in the refrigerated cases. read more
