What keeps bringing us back is not just the wine, although there is certainly plenty to enjoy there. This visit included a flight, a glass of Starlight White, another newer red offering, and the small bites that have become one of my favorite parts of the experience. Fresh bread, cheeses, olives, dipping sauces, hummus, and even a couple of truffles create the kind of simple but thoughtful pairing that encourages you to slow down and stay awhile. What stands out most, though, is the authenticity of the place. During this visit we once again had the opportunity to spend some time with Lee, whose warmth and hospitality seem to reflect everything this winery is about. Nothing feels rushed, overly commercial, or manufactured. It feels genuine. On this particular Saturday, we sat outside overlooking the grounds of Kings Mountain Golf Course, enjoying a break from the routine and watching golfers make their way through the course. There was no special event, no live music, and no grand occasion. It was simply a relaxing afternoon, and somehow that made it even better. There are plenty of wineries where you can have a tasting. There are far fewer places where you leave feeling refreshed, welcomed, and already looking forward to your next visit. Vin de Matrix continues to be one of those places for us, and it remains well worth the drive from Pittsburgh.

I wish I had taken less hits to the head in my youth, and then maybe I would remember his name. But walked away after having several samples, buying a few mixed drinks for myself and the wife to make Holiday shopping easier, and two bottles that are probably going in my stocking. Kudos to the honey whiskey, they use local honey and you can actually see when it settles in the bottle, and has an outstanding actual honey flavor.

Tastings are free. They also have options to buy flights and glasses to drink there. When I came in I was eagerly greeted by the person behind the wine bar. She answered my questions about the history of the winery, the origin of the grapes and fruit (both local and from the Lake Erie region). I was excited to see they had a cab franc. It is one of my favorites and isn't that common. They had a variety of dry and sweet reds and whites, fruit wines and also sell pre packaged wine skushies (because they don't have a slushie machine on site). Overall a nice variety of wines that were enjoyable. Definitely a place I'd visit again.
