When visiting dermatologists in the past, I would often spend more time with the nurse than the actual doctor. Dr. Edwards entered the room, sat and listened to my acne life story from beginning to end. Her genuine concern and determination to provide a lasting solution was so comforting. The initial regimen she subscribed didn't provide the results she was satisfied with, so on the next few visits she tweaked the regimen until she was satisfied with the results. But the visits weren't all about her satisfaction! Dr. Edwards informed me that she was quite the perfectionist and told me to slow her down or say pause if it seemed like she was seeking perfection beyond my comfort zone. As months went by, my face totally cleared up. I've suffered with acne off and on since I was 15 years old and my face has NEVER looked this good. I've had a clear face before, but there would always be bumps under the surface. My complexion is as close to flawless as I've ever experienced. His work vastly exceeded my expectations in how I would look after abdominal surgery at age 64. My only goal was health, not cosmetic, but he gave me BOTH! Having been obese since a teenager, body image did not bother me. But I'd seen the medical impact of obese skin folds and immobility in my 80 yr old mother and 85 yr old mother in law. Still, I waited a long time and did a lot of research (I'm a scientist) before deciding to get surgery. I'd lost almost 100 lbs after bariatric surgery in 2018, kept it off through Covid, but hit a wall in 2022. The next step was to remove the excess skin and fat cells that now sagged heavily, further emphasizing decades of stretch marks and multiple c-section scars. So I was beyond amazed when I saw what Dr Forman had achieved for me. I now have a flat belly with an adorable almond-shaped belly button (hadn't seen mine in 50 yrs...). Dr Friedman told me to come back and have a thermage treatment and charged me. It did nothing. Dr Friedman accepted no responsibility.The drainage hole was a hack job.He refused to put a stitch in it. When I went for my post op he removed the tube and refused to repair the jagged hole.I have an unnecessarily visible scar that could have been closed properly. After I saw an oculoplastic surgeon who performed several unsuccessful surgeries to treat my lagophthalmos, I decided to find someone who would approach my condition with a different strategy. I extensively researched oculoplastic surgeons practicing in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area. My research led me to Dr. Zatezalo. From my first consultation with Dr. Zatezalo, I knew he was the surgeon for me. He is kind, smart, and compassionate along with experienced, talented, and creative in surgical procedures. He clearly explained to me that I needed full thickness skin grafts (FTSG) to functionally improve the operation of my eyelids. I had read about eyelid skin grafts from various Internet websites that described it as a last resort because of its complexity and routinely poor cosmetic outcome. Recovery may take up to a year or more before the grafts blend into the rest of your face and even then, they are usually a different texture and slightly off color. Dr. Z exerted no pressure on me to have the procedure. Deep down inside I knew I needed it. I had to do something as I could not go on living the way I was, and yet, I was afraid of what I would look like after a FTSG on my lower eyelids. I was using eyedrops nonstop during the day, and at night I would awaken every few hours in pain from the dryness and had to instill dry eye ointment. I wore sunglasses indoors because my eyes barely tolerated room lights or being out in the sunlight. I was miserable and my quality of life had gotten so poor, I did not want to leave my home. Dr. Zatezalo was very patient with me and again very honest. I had read many of his patient reviews of how he gave back his patients' lives through corrective surgery. I decided to move forward with full thickness skin grafts as Dr. Zatezalo recommended. In my case, it took approximately six months before the grafts started to blend in well with the surrounding skin and not be noticeable. My level of comfort improved immediately after the surgery as I now had more skin in my lower eyelids to help my eyes close completely. I no longer needed to use eyedrops and ointment like before. I was also able to tolerate artificial and natural light without sunglasses. I had the FTSG surgery in 2018. Today, people don't know I had it unless I point it out to them. The Zatezalo Group is located in a beautiful and modern office with easy parking access. Amelia and Kimmy, Dr. Zatezalo's staff, are super friendly, efficient, and helpful. Dr Mark E Richards' work was so bad they tried to make me sign an NDA. I had 4 facial threads…read moreplaced by the doctor, not even a week after the procedure 1 noticed they were buckling and rippling in my face. I came in for a revision and was told by Dr Mark E Richards and this staff that "this happens to one in a million patients." When I asked if the thread would need to be removed I was told that removing the thread wouldn't be done because it rips at the connective tissue and removing the thread would not allow me the collagen reproduction benefits that are supposed to take place over the course of a year. After implying I somehow was to blame for the thread protrusion, the doctor cut what he called the excess thread. He mentioned again how rare of an occurrence this was, and sent me on my way. Not even a week later the thread was jetting out again from my face. I reached out and was told that Dr Mark E Richards was on vacation so l had to wait another week with my face disfigured before having the thread corrected, for the second time... A week later, I was allowed to come in for the 2nd correction of this alleged "one patient in a million" issue. During this second revision, after ripping and digging into my face with an inadequate amount of numbing agent, the doctor completely removed the thread. Meaning that not only would I not be receiving the collagen reproductive but I was getting 1 less than what I paid for. I mentioned as much and that's when all of Dr Mark E Richards false niceties went out the window. After arguing me down I was given a document to sign. (See the attached photos.) I won't just sign anything without reading through it first, a fact that Laura, a staff member (pictured) seemed very put off about so far as to remark to the receptionist " well I guess I won't be making my palates class tonight." As I read through the document I discovered the doctor had given me an NDA to sign. When I questioned this I was told it was standard procedure when a patient is unsatisfied with the work. I refused to sign. The experience I had with Dr Mark E Richards was horrible from start to finish. 1 wish I would have paid closer attention to his facial procedure reviews on realself.com. If I'd done so I would have saved myself from disfigurement at his hands. His work is sloppy and he and his staff are rude. If you value your results please do not go to Dr Mark E Richards! Imagine all the patients who he's given NDA's to who have signed. Protect yourself and go elsewhere.
