Once a year Bell Plastics open there gates to the public. Big Mike, a giant muffler man, greets visitors into the land of giants. There is a collection of mid-century advertising roadside advertising: Big Boy, Bob, the Giant green giant, a Doggie Diner head, Paul Bunyan, Santa Claus to name a few. The hot dogs, chips, cakes, soda, and water were free. I took my time eating my lunch. I wanted to sit and admire these treasures that once called people in to businesses. Review is for their annual Open House. It was our first time and we had an amazing time! If you miss seeing old roadside fiberglass statue landmarks and advertising this is the place to go! There is a lot of history here and it was amazing to see Bob's Big Boy statues and old Paul Bunyan's repurposed into different business advertising. We arrived around 15 minutes after it started and street parking was getting a bit full already so come early! They had some a nice vendor in front selling bigfoot casts from Bluff Creek. I asked the nice lady in front about polishing a personal item and she took the time to remember my name and run after me once she found someone that could help answer my question, thank you! The building on the right houses the "Bay Area's largest Pez collection" a well as other antique and vintage toys. It's really nicely displayed and you can get lost looking at everything. There are also the owners who are happy to talk about their collection with anyone! A lot of the old Burlingame Pez museum collection ended up here. Toward the back they have a vacuum form demo and a "big mike" keepsake you can take home from the demo. Our RV had a bit of a leak saturating the subfloor. We removed the tank and took it to Bell Plastics in Hayward. They checked it and found the bung on the bottom was cracked, and the crack had spread into the tank. 2 hours later, it was repaired and far better than new. The flush bung only 1/2" deep is now a full 2" deep and very thick. The weld is impressively professional. I feel very confident that we'll have no more issues with this. If you need a custom tank, or a tank repaired, this is the best place I've ever heard of. I won't use anyone else. btw - They have a big collection of the famous "Muffler Men" from Route 66, as well as other sculptures. read more

Had the pleasure of checking out Bell Plastic's open house, and it was such a joy! I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a really great time. Everyone who works at Bell Plastic is incredibly nice and very enthusiastic talking about what they do! I love the passion!! The family and I were able to tour the place, saw their amazing Pez collection, learned some history about that, saw their plastics machines, their laser cutters, cnc machines, just so much informative things. Bell Plastics even supplied us with hot dogs, cakes, sodas, and chips! Such a great open house, hope to come back next year and see what else they added to their collection of giant figures!! Mr Rinky and I attended the annual Bell Plastics event on Sunday the 18th. We love kitsch and seeing these famous iconic statues made us feel like we were at a celebrity event---the Bob's Big Boy; Doggie Diner head; various dinosaurs, the Jolly green giant and other iconic statues. It was also a celebration of "Big Mike's " 50th birthday. Not sure who Big Mike is. They treated us to hot dogs sodas chilled water, various chips, white cake AND chocolate cake. Yum! It was fun to watch people interact with the statues Some adults were elated ti see their old friends---Spidernan scaling the walls, lumberjack man, Dogie Diner head. Kids were having fun with the giant dinosaurs. Some were too frightened to get close for a photo while other kids stuck their heads in the dinosaurs' mouths! The staff at Bell Plastics were very friendly and welcoming. It was interesting to people watch---young, old, familes, different ethnicities. This event was not for everyone--very funky. For those of us fans we could have not been happier! read more

Giant iconic Muffler Men? What a treat for Bell Plastics to open its gates to the public for its free annual one day open house so visitors can get nostalgic by visiting the fiberglass statutes of the past. Muffler men were roadside landmarks and advertisers that were cultural figures popular in the '60s and '70s. Since then many have faded away, but the owner of Bell Plastics has been collecting and restoring these sculptures with his first purchase being Big Mike from Morris Car Wash in Hayward. They repair the broken fiberglass on each sculpture and repaint them back to their glory year's appearance. They have two Doggie Diner sculptures, one that I remember from my childhood. Other sculptures on display include a Paul Bunyan lumberjack, Uniroyal Gal, a green octopus from a car wash, the character from MAD, mardi gras head, a firemen, santa, the pepper from Chili's and Boy's Big Boy. They also had workers that showed how they produce custom plastics and polishing techniques and also stamped plastic molds for the guests. What a great fun experience! It was nostalgic and thanks to Bell Plastics and its friendly staff for opening its gates for us to experience. read more

Let's get small! You will feel small at this Disneyland for nostalgic geeks... We went for their 50th anniversary open studios. Lots of giant plastic characters and objects kind of in an alleyway. They had demonstrations of how they do what they do, and souvenirs as well as hats and t-shirts for sale. Plus on the day we visited, there were free hot dogs, chips and water. read more

Great community event and I got to check out their facilities, their actual production process plus the types of products they manufacture. I work near Bell Plastics. I often will just drive by on my way home to see the Giants out front. It always makes me happy to see the Giant characters that hang out there. They have an annual open house for Big Mikes birthday. I've been for the past 3 years. It gets bigger and better each year. Love the classic cars too! Next one is August 16, 2020! My Buddy and I missed their open house last year and was really hoping to see their collection of Muffler Men and other cool figures. I called earlier in the week and asked if they were open on the weekend, but they aren't. Lucky for me, I spoke to Bruce(owner) and he said to call and there might be someone working on Saturday. When we arrived, Bruce let us in to tour his collection and even came out to explain where he got them and what he and his team had to do in order to repair them. This is a must see for sure, even if they are closed, you can see them from the road.But I would suggest you call and hopefully you get an opportunity to meet and talk with Bruce, he was incredibly nice. Don't forget to purchase one of the cool T-Shirts that he sells, all money goes back to repairing these icons. I plan to go back out there for the open house this next August. read more

I've been to the Bell Plastics Big Mike's Birthday celebration for the past two years. I plan on going to the August 16th 2020 this year . When you walk up you can check out the cool car show. They have a Doggie Diner dog that spins around . The vintage plastic figures reminds me of my past . Big Mike, Dinosaur, the Big Lady, and Bob Big Boy are a few of my favorites . I enjoy going to the back and watching them make the molds and being able to take one home. The employees of Bell Plastics are so nice and treat us to a lunch of hot dogs, chips a drink and yummy Birthday cake. This is a awesome event I look forward to every year . I needed a small custom part fabricated from UHWM plastic. I asked the well-known national brand, and they told me first, that they didn't **do** UHWM plastic, and if they did, they wanted a considerable sum to do it. Oh, and they took three days to tell me this. Bruce at Bell Plastic, however, responded to my late-night inquiry within 45 minutes, offered a quote less than half of Those/Another Plastic well-known-company that didn't UHWM in the first place, AND found (and resolved) an ambiguity in the drawing that had escaped both me and the preparing engineer. Wow. I needed the part in two working days (with a weekend in between) to install at my customer (a non-production system, but important for them). No problem for Bell Plastics. Done. Even got a tour of the truly cool stuff Bruce collects (plastic statues and some amazing artwork. Anytime I need plastic work in the future, Bell Plastic will be my first -- and probably only -- call. read more

We are working on a documentary on Muffler Men and came upon Bell Plastics with their treasure trove of Muffler Men. We didn't make an appointment and just walked onto the lot with all our film equipment. We got to the office at the end of the lot and found Bruce in the office and asked if we could film his Muffler Men and his lot. He was very nice and accommodating. He even let us do an impromptu interview and showed us around his lot. Everyone was very nice here and it was so nice for him to take the time out of his busy day to tell us about the history of everything and give a tour and interview so last minute. Thanks so much Bruce! We really appreciate it! It was very interesting to see all the things that they make here. They make everything here!! And i mean everything! They don't just make plastics, they make metal work, acrylic, and all kinds of things. I didn't know such a place existed so its pretty awesome to find a place for future reference. As you navigate the gray, industrial bowels of Hayward, you will see in the distance brightly colored giants peering out over the rooflines of the surrounding builings: Santa Claus, Paul Bunyons, Doggie Diner heads, dinosaurs and more. No, you're not in Disneyland or some hidden film studio, but you're about to enter the cluttered driveway of Bell Plastics. Contracting a fabricator you haven't worked with before is always risky since you're obligated to pay them for their work even if the final product is not what you had in mind. Especially after hiring one previously who didn't deliver on quality or specs. So I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of a recent award prototype that i designed which included steel fabrication and acrylic with engraving. The owner Bruce Kennedy provided not only a reasonable estimate, but offered some useful suggestions on improving the design, and provided helpful answers to more technical questions. When I asked him if he could speed the delivery date of the award by one day, he had it completed two days ahead of schedule. Don't be fooled by the "plastics" in the name, as they do work with other materials. read more
