TEN STARS! Yes, I need more for this review. Brief history. Shoulder injury. Major & unique shoulder surgery. So.... I visited two other PT facilities then went to Bell Plaza. Immediately I knew this was the would be the correct choice. This rating might sound like I'm a family member, close friend, or business associate. Believe me, I'm not. I'm just a client that has been given great care by a hands on, competent, caring therapist. Tom brought me along slowly & I've regained strength & range of motion. He displays a huge amount of compassion. Tom knows how much to push & when to back off with clients. Wonderful with elderly individuals & relates to Gen Y as well. If you've taken even a moment to look through these reviews there is no mistake that all of them are glowing. In the Bayside/Flushing area, as many have mentioned, there are a ton of Physical Therapists/Practices so it could be hard to choose. Interestingly enough, I chose this practice due to the awesome reviews on Yelp that I found about it! I was dealing with patellar subluxation (knee cap sliding out of place) and could not have found a better place to be treated. I was treated for a few months 2-3 times per week and was truly sad when the time came to end my treatment. His front office staff are stellar and meticulous as well: the whole environment is truly impeccable. Tom is personable, professional, and above all a truly outstanding clinician. As a healthcare professional myself I am innately critical of healthcare providers and could literally not find one issue with my treatment. If all 'providers' were even half as proficient as Tom, our healthcare climate would not be what it is today. At the risk of sounding cliché: look no further if you have any needs for a Physical Therapist, I truly doubt you can find someone better. read more

I had elbow surgery about 10 years ago for arthritis build up. I went to physical therapy afterwards and had what I thought were good results. I had about a 30 degree loss of motion after I done with PT. It came time to have the surgery again and more physical therapy. My wife Sara had surgery a few months earlier and started going to Bell Plaza and was very pleased so I made my appointment. Tom did an evaluation and told me we were going to be able to get back motion. He pushes me hard and gets the results. We are currently at a 15 degree loss and are not stopping there. Tom has a great bedside manner and is incredibly knowledgable. The staff of Carrie,Joanne, Audrey and Christina are fantastic! As I sat in the waiting room prior to my first appointment, I almost left because it seemed chaotic with a lot of banter back and forth (not easy for an introvert to handle). That would have been a terrible mistake on my part, because I soon realized that Tom is an amazing therapist, and this is why: 1). You will get your money's worth - don't think you will get away with an easy hour and a comfy massage! There were times when I was there for close to 2 hours of hard work and home exercises that added another hour to the load; no problem, I was highly motivated to get better! 2) You will learn - lots!! Tom showed me my MRI and explained what my doctor had not told me. He gave me the "why" as well as the "what." 3) He is very inventive and very creative - he took exercises that I already do for my back and added a little to them so that they were a little harder, a little different, but were benefitting both my back and my knee at the same time. He also had me doing different things each time - therapy never was boring because each time there were new and challenging variations on what I'd been doing. 4). He listens - he allowed me to back off a bit on a couple exercises but then the next week, he had me back doing them again, modified ever so slightly. About the "banter" - it turned out to be an okay thing, it was always in good taste and it made the time go faster. It made for some entertaining conversations as we were stretching, flexing, lifting, etc; and invariably the conversations ended with "Nice to meet you - good luck in your rehab." I am a senior athlete, I compete nationally in my sport - I've been in Physical Therapy 4x in the last 33 years - Tom is the best physical therapist I've had and I recommend him unconditionally! read more

Tom and his staff are the greatest. Went in for a torn labrum and Tom worked his magic. I wouldn't go anywhere else if I ever need more physical therapy. It is a small place but that's also what makes it so good. He is usually by himself, but every once in a while he has college students who are working on becoming physical therapists themselves who help out and are fantastic. My daughter broke her leg in December & was immobilized for 8 weeks. Bell Plaza is a local place & conveniently located just south of Northern Blvd on Bell Boulevard. There is only one guy, Tom, who works w/ all his patients. No pawning you off on to others. He gives you personal, particular attention. He never scheduled too many people at the same time so he can handle everyone's P/T personally. From the time my daughter came in, he knew exactly what she needed & only gradually stepped up her exercises as she tolerated. Never got the feeling that he pushed her too hard or he was milking the system. Today is her last visit & my daughter's gait and conditioning are at about 90%. The rest is up to her. And I can't thank Tom enough for that. BTW, the receptionists/secretaries, as opposed to other doctors' office (where they are desensitized & onery), are easy to deal with. I went to Bell Plaza PT for about 4-5 months following patellar tendon repair surgery and could not have had a better experience. Like many others have noted, Tom is knowledgeable, stays current on research, and pushes patients to work hard. The quality of the whole operation becomes immediately clear after the first session. Tom is by far the greatest physical therapist I have ever had (and I have had more than my fair share of physical therapists). As a collegiate athlete he put me at ease with his knowledge and hands on approach. Following hip arthroscopy I was immediately impressed with his style of care and compassion. Tom is not a boring corporate style PT. At other places I had a script of exercises that I would repeat every time in the same order no matter what the entire time I was in therapy. With Tom that was never the case. Tom adjusts his rehab plan to suit the individual never making them impersonal or boring. He will change up the rehab as needed to truly challenge and get you to where you need to be. He is excellent at getting athletes back to sport specific training. Coming to Bell Plaza PT was something I always looked forward to because I knew I was getting better with each session and that Tom was doing an incredible job. He challenged me every visit and made rehab fun. Tom is all over it and never rushing you out the door. He insists you get the time and rehab you need. I would never go anywhere but to him!!!!! I have been treated by Tom for a little over a month now after knee surgery left my knee non-weight bearing and immobilized for almost 7 weeks. My leg was very weak - my thigh and calf lost 2 inches of muscle, my knee was still quite swollen, but EVERY week I've seen noticeable improvement. I have had physical therapy before, but Tom is personable and attentive, and he doesn't just tell you exercises to do in office and at home, he tells you why you're doing them and what your goal is with every movement. He also creates a great community atmosphere in his office with all his patients, he's encouraging and motivating, but he won't go easy on you! I'm not a gym person and not super active, and though sometimes my leg feels too tired and my knee feels too sore to go to PT, I'm always glad to go, because I know after an appointment, I will see marked progress in my strength and mobility after. His staff is also very friendly and helpful - easy to work with and informative, and very aware and accommodating of my busy scheduling needs. The office texts reminders for appointments which I find super helpful. There are a few parking spots for patients in front which is great for patients with mobility issues like me. Tom worked me twice first for a number of weeks on a torn hip labrum and then for nine months while I was recovering from both a torn ACL and torn Menisci. I do not exaggerate when I say that during my ACL recovery, physical therapy twice a week was the highlight of my week. There are a multitude of reason for which I would recommend Bell Plaza Physical Therapy to anyone who asked. First I greatly appreciated that Tom took great pains to ensure I understood what was happening to my body, pulling up pictures and diagrams where needed, helping me to understand things that my surgeon had not. Secondly Tom made sure that I recovered as quickly and successfully as possible. He was constantly changing/altering exercises for me to get the most out of the PT, he never gave me no room to slack off or be lazy but was also quick to make sure I was not pushing to hard or hurting myself. Finally in addition to the "actual" physical therapy aspect, I would recommend Bell Plaza Physical therapy because of its atmosphere, and the kind, caring temperament of all those who work there. Bell Plaza PT is never short on conversation, jokes, or laughter. It is an atmosphere which contributes nearly as much to one's recovery as the exercises themselves. You can count on everyone from being supportive and true friends through the ups and downs of your recovery. I've been undergoing physical therapy for bursitis and shoulder pain for the last few months here. Dr. Tom Matassa is very attentive and helpful (as are his staff) and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Usually there are 2 or 3 patients; we talk to each other while we're going through our exercises and Tom plays music on Pandora, often chosen by group consensus. Of course if you don't like socializing that's cool, too. When the exercises are painful (no pain no gain) he understands and helps make them tolerable. This office is amazing, I truly don't know where to start. Not only do you get a warm welcome, by name, from Tom when you walk in, but all three of his receptionists welcome you and know your name as well. The atmosphere in this office is like no other. When you come in, you should be ready to have enjoyable conversations with Tom and the rest of the patients in there. Tom sets an atmosphere that is comfortable and enjoyable to be around. Who enjoys going to doctors appointments? Nobody.... But I actually get excited when I have to go to physical therapy. Tom individualized each exercise to you and does nothing repetitive. He will take you only to the point that you can handle it to assure you are receiving the best possible treatment and recovery. If you are a few days out from an appointment and are experiencing pain or even just have a question, either give Tom a call or shoot him an email and he responds ASAP with what you could do to help. Tom was able to ensure I was strong enough and gave me outstanding advice before going in for surgery. When coming out of surgery, he has worked at my pace and has not pushed anything that I cannot do. When you ask Tom a question, he really knows what he is talking about.
