This is a really interesting old time farm store with lots of stuff you didn't know you needed, but do. They carry everything for gardens. They have lovely fruit trees, and they carry annuals, etc. It's always worth going there just to walk around and look at everything. They have clear instructions even for removing POISON IVY! love them I must be losing my mind, as I was certain I had reviewed Belle Mead, the most awesome place to buy fruit trees. When we bought our house, we planned to plant fruit trees. One for the dog, one for the cat, one for each of us. Then we had our first child and lost our pets. Then got another dog. We needed to plant the trees, for them, for us, for the environment. And for us--FRUIT! Our rule: only plant things we can eventually eat. Last year (2012), we bought a cherry, 2 plums, a fig, and blueberries. Then a raspberry. Not knowing what we were doing, we asked. The fruit expert told us to cut the roots (1/3 down the bucket), use some soil/crop enhancer (I can't remember the name), and water 5 gallons per week, give or take depending on rain. Water in the morning, a trickle (not at night, to prevent root rot). Gotcha. We decided that 1 gallon of water from the water barrels would be sufficient during the week. If you ask questions such as "how can a 15-20' tree be considered a dwarf?", you won't be treated like a dumbass (answer: non-dwarf trees can grow to 30-50' or more. OH). Our plan was to slowly replace the hedges with blueberries by filling in the bare spots with blueberries (ignorant that blueberries are actually difficult to grow and we should have tried blackberries). The blueberries didn't make it through the summer (though 1 is still alive this year!), but all of the other plants thrived. Everything fruited, then the squirrels and birds went to town. Except on the fig plant. We ended up with awesome figs; only 2 handfuls weren't enjoyed by the ants, but that dead looking fig tree blossomed. We were warned that it would die outside. Nope. It was fine during the winter and is bright, happy, and tall. This year, we added 2 more cherry trees, another fig, a peach, and a nectarine. I know, that's 9 total, and we only have 7 total pets & humans to account for, but we uprooted some non-edible plants and felt the need to replace them. We love our trees. This year, we also netted the trees. The plums, peaches, and nectarines are doing very well. We have cherries too. Belle Mead also delivers--$20 for whatever we've purchased (6 bags of mulch, 2 soil builders, five 8-12' trees). When I asked about gravel, I found out that they sell that too. They were only too happy to print out a list of recommended contractors in the area too. Local honey is sold. Driveway stakes for the winter so the plow doesn't run over your lawn. They sell their own label of at least half a dozen varieties of grass seed; in our shaded back yard, it has been more successful than the Pennington & Scott brands we have tried 2x per year for a few years. If I need advice regarding our plants, I call and they're helpful. The staff is friendly and helpful. Their prices are more than fair. My daughter wants the roses, and although those ARE edible, I'm too new to gardening to attempt roses. My in-laws are envious of our fruiting trees--they hired a tree expert to plant fruit trees on their property in the mountains; 4 years later, no sign of fruit at all. Our $35 plants are doing very well, including the fig we didn't even bother covering during the winter. As my toddler would say, THUMBS UP! read more

Belle Mead helped me resurrect a problematic backyard lawn that I thought would never return to a state of lush, green glory. The lawn went quickly into decline a few years after I purchased my home about 11 years ago, with weeds and creeping charlie taking over. I made numerous attempts to reseed using corporate brands from the big box stores and more "cultish" brands purchased from mom and pop nurseries, but if they even managed to germinate the grass barely lasted through the season. After letting half a dozen chickens clear out every living plant and stray seed, I contemplated laying sod (too expensive) or making another attempt at starting from seed. Belle Mead was my solution. They sell their own blends of seed that are best suited to the region, but even more helpful than that they also gave me helpful suggestions/instructions and made sure I had the proper fertilizer and other supporting goods to guarantee success. I prepared the soil, sowed seeds and spread starter fertilizer at the time they recommended in the fall, and in a few weeks time the previously brown patch (now covered in straw) was speckled with patches of green. As spring approached I noticed a few bare and sparse spots, so I sowed more of the remaining seed as spring temps warmed up, and a week later the entire surface was covered with a carpet of lush young grass. Now it's tall and full and ready for a first mow. Weeds are sparse and easily eliminated by hand. I now have a backyard lawn again! And everything I needed cost less than $70 (including the free expert advice). The seed even filed in bare patches under trees in my front yard where seed had previously failed to even germinate. Don't waste your money at Home Depot, Lowe's, or garden centers. Go to Belle Meade and get things done the right way for less money the first time. read more

warning: unreliable quality of cherry tree (died in 2 weeks, before being planted) and mis-labelling of plants. I have been buying at this place for several years - in the past it was on my route between my field research sites, but in the past few years I drive there once or twice a year even though it is very far away. The reason I go there is that they sell seed potatoes in the bulk. I might also buy a few other things, and consider their prices and selection of packed soil and merchandise good. BUT this year I was tempted to buy a cherry tree. I bought it at the end of April. I left it in the pot within my fenced vegetable garden plot. and watered it regularly - making sure to keep it mist enough but not too wet. It did not look too well - it had some flowers when I bought it, as well as young leaves. As the flowers wilted (as they should), so did the leaves. Since the nursery is very far from my home I called them today - they said that they od not have a warranty on the trees and will not reimburse me for the purchase. That's $40 gone and a missed year for the cherry tree to grow. Since I already called them, I raised another problem: As I was busy with the tree and selecting a bag of soil, my husband picked 2 plants labeled :Asclepias syriaca". I did not have time to look at them, but once we reached home and I put them in my nursery area I noticed that the plants do NOT look like Asclepias syriaca. As a botanist, as well as having worked with Asclepias syriaca seedlings in the past, I know what this species looks like without needing to see the flowers, and now that plants in the wild reached the same size as the plants we bought, I can confirm that the leaves are distinctly different. Being a wild plant, if the difference results from the plant being a cultivar, this had to be specified on the tag. Otherwise it has to be and look the same as the wild plant. But as they are another species of Asclepias (milkweed) we do not mind so much growing them, hoping for yellow or orange flowers instead of the white ones of A. syriaca. The woman I talked to at the nursery when I called about the cherry tree said that these plants were labeled by the nursery they buy them from. I said that it means that this plant has been mis-labelled, and the nursery is not reliable, to which the woman worker contradicted, saying that they are reliable. If the store would not have been so far, I might have returned these plants, but since it is far, we planted them anyway. The mis-identity of the Asclepias has been confirmed by 3 more botanists, one of them also a past employee in a plant-growing nursery. Bottom line: I do not find this store a reliable source for buying plants. Neither for the quality of the product (the cherry died), nor the reliability of the identity of the plants (as in the case of the milkweed), or the store policy of backing up the quality and identity of the plants they sell. read more
