As a business owner in Belltown, I have to give credit to Dan and his entire staff who works there and who continue to work there, you have to be tough as nail to survive at this corner. It's less grocery store, then extensive convenience store. Of course, maybe you just have to know what to get and what not to get. I shopped on a Wednesday night at 9pm, looking for spring water in glass and a semi-healthy snack. When I walked in I was surprised by the musty smell that greeted me. The selected isn't bad, but don't expect gourmet or top quality. I left with a bottle of Pellegrino and some Pirate's Booty. Neither was exactly what I wanted, but I wanted to get out of there. Cashier was nice enough, if not pleasant and the prices aren't terrible, considering. I wish I'd let my nose lead me and just left after not finding what I wanted, however. When I got back to my hotel room and tried the snacks I was really bummed to find them completely stale. Turns out the best-by date was 6 months past! Very disappointing. Cool place. Open late. Lots of stuff to choose from. They even have a deli and about 5 really long aisles, which is impressive for a convenience store. They're more like a small supermarket than anything. Their staff are really nice and like a previous reviewer said, they have a sense of humor. I don't come here often, usually getting things for other people. But what I like is that they have some healthy food mixed in with all the regular junk food that you get at a normal corner store. You can get Dave's Killer Bread here, LOL. They have fruits and veggies, hot food, sandwiches, wine, and lots of other random things. Staff usually friendly. Once I came in and they caught two people trying to steal things, so the staff were a little on edge. One staff drop kicked a burrito or something food item that someone was trying to steal into one of the aisles. That was a while ago. Pleasantly surprised! I haven't read all the reviews but Sean is super cool as well as everyone else and they have a great selection! I can get light bulbs at midnight on a Friday. And a bottle of wine. And some Beechers cheese! Yes the prices are higher but for me paying another couple dollars to walk 20 feet is worth it to me. When I have friends coming into town or unexpected I can pick up enough items to make it look like i made an effort. Oh, a card for grandma? Done! Next door to the dog park on 3rd this is a dog friendly grocery store to stop in while walking in downtown. The staff always welcomes pooches and have a doggie cookie jar right on the counter. They have a small deli with sandwiches and soup, chicken etc... and a produce section with fairly fresh produce if you are in a pinch. There's a pretty fair selection of stuff, but stay away from the meat -- ground beef was completely brown and way expired, and some of the fish actually had mold on it. True, it may not be the store's responsibility. Whether it is there responsibility to clean up the trash or not, it does impact how I feel about shopping here. Dan's is what you expect in a local Mini-Mart or Mid Size Grocery. It might have some older decor and need a facelift. However, the staff is always very friendly and personable.... This is a great city grocery. Somewhat spendy but it is a city grocer. The staff are super friendly. Open late for any late night goodies you may need. BEWARE of the dvd rental machine. I know of 7 people myself included who's credit card info was stolen, the owner is aware of the problem and has yet to yank it out of there due to the hacking issues it seems to have. Dan's is our regular catch all for all the comforts of home - from a very wide range of beverages to deli stuff, fresh fruits and other sundry items... I live in the neighborhood and I seem to end up at Dan's at least once or twice a week. It's excellent if you live in the area and just need 1 or 2 things. I seem to always be out of something. The local flavor gives it some charm and as long as you aren't blind you can generally navigate around them. Selection isn't as good as say a safeway or even pike place but in a pinch it will do and they have a little bit of just about everything. read more

Belltown ain't got shit on East Hastings. Seriously though, we were staying at the Belltown Inn, and are from a smaller city, and never once felt particularly threatened or frightened by anyone. The prices weren't amazing but they didn't seem extravagant either, compared to other corner stores within walking distance. Jittery crackheads, snooty Belltown yuppies with their well-groomed dogs, drunken idiots, shoplifters, and the mentally ill form their clientele. It is not "The Little Biscuit" that used to be there, not at all. Did not like the fact a lot of their snacks were well past the pull dates. No thank you I am not going to pay for over priced out of date foods. Like there are some things you can get sick if you etc. out of date foods. Double check prices and make sure you get a receipt! We bought a Theo chocolate bar which was clearly marked at $2.99. Other flavors of Theo were marked higher but were on sale for $2.99, which I thought was odd. Our bar rang up at the higher price. I said it was $2.99. The lady cashier said no, only the other flavors were on sale. We then exchanged our bar for one on sale. She gave us $2.00 in cash for the difference but said she had to keep the receipt to show why she took cash out of the box. Later we realized the price originally rang up more than $5.00, that the $2.00 in cash was not enough to cover what we had been overcharged. There are half bunch of little corner stores in Belltown, but I walk 6 blocks out of my way to go to this one. The prices really are reasonable compared to the others, and they actually have a much better selection than most. And it's clean. Granted, there is a bus stop out front, and it can get a little sketch in the area at night, but it's to be expected. Lastly, I am from the midwest and am of the opinion that it's hard to get a good sandwich in Seattle, but their sandwiches are awesome!! Possibly one of the most horrible "grocery store" I have ever shopped at. Its dirty. No customer service whatsoever, if you are using EBT they treat you like less of a person. One woman on the weekends is vulgar, rude, and loud. Can never get ahold of the manager or owner. The meat is brown and looks like it's been sitting out way Past its expiration date. I just returned from Dan's and usually I am very happy with the food and service, but today was different. I was standing in line waiting and when I got to the counter, the old black man who was checking made a point of switching with the white checker. I was really appalled by this. What if it were reversed and a white checker switched with the black one because he didn't want to help the black woman ??? Other than the blantant racism this place as a whole is pretty darn good. I do like most people working there (though there have been some strange ones..). They are friendly and personable. Helpful, too. Managers of other grocery stores should come by and learn how the customer service should be. Good selection of items that sometimes surprises me - like "wow, they have it??" Considering how long they have been in business, the place is kept as neat as they can make that I sort of admire. (The place must been thru a lot - Belltown can be rough, you know....) Price is high, which is understandable. But hey, you don't do a full grocery there in the first place, do you? It's a small neighborhood grocery store! You just expect the price to be higher. BUT here is a catch. If you decide to go to Dan's Grocery, make sure you take a video camera with you. Sometimes, you encounter some priceless situation that makes you regret to have forgotten to bring a camera!! You'll see what I'm talking about one day.
