$40 for a "wheels not curbed" parking citation. Really? I get the theory behind curbing the wheels of a car on a hill, but let's be honest: ticketing like this is a pure revenue grab. Per Google, it would appear that your odds of being injured or killed by a lightning strike are probably far, far higher than your odds of being injured or killed by a car parked on a hill that has a spontaneous brake failure and doesn't have its wheels curbed. The $3.95 "internet service fee" that one must pay to deal with citations online is somewhat amusing given that the company Belmont has contracted with to run this racket has a website that doesn't even work properly. The confirmation page indicated that I didn't provide an email address for an email receipt, but I did and I received one. It also has visible bugs (see screenshot). read more

BEST TOWN EVER! There's a chili cook-off every year, summer concerts in the park, it's too damn cute! There isn't any downtown currently, but there's a movement to build one. This is the town that tried to outlaw smoking EVERYWHERE (even outdoors and in apartments, not sure what happened with that, but it was kind of funny and got Belmont some national recognition for about 15 minutes!). The city officials (while I don't know any of them personally) seem to really care and be very on the ball about taking care of the Belmont community. There is a movement afoot to build a pocket park at Semeria (where there is currently a vacant lot), and it seems like Belmont residents are coming together to make it happen. The new library is a gem. What an adorable little town this is. read more

Belmont has a small town community culture that is also family friendly. People are down to earth and the hills provide just enough privacy, without feeling closed-off. People love the public schools but I don't know firsthand. Traffic is getting worse on the main thruway (ralston) and this needs to be addressed. City center is improving bit by bit with new eateries like menchies froyo, yama sushi, five guys. Carlmont village has a few local favorites like cafe bliss for brunch, coyote cafe Mexican, and lunardi's supermarket has friendly service. Homes & apartment buildings look a little old in belmont and could use a lot more remodels. Still it's a great place to live with convenient location on peninsula. read more

Belmont is a beautiful little city tucked away beside San Mateo. I lived here with my grandparents while attending community college before transferring to Cal. My favorite thing about Belmont is it's trail system. Throughout Belmont Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods is a sprawling trail system that goes around water dog lake and beyond. it's always a lovely place to hike/stroll or bring friends. Another good hike in Belmont is the watershed. The San Francisco Watershed provides beautiful hikes with views of crystal springs reservoir all on an internationally known cross country course. It's truly magical to go for runs or hikes here, especially in the crisp belmont mornings! Belmont is a fairly affluent city that is mostly quiet and very safe. It has close-knit neighbors and organizations and good eats! I love exploring new little places in the surrounding area. I hope i can afford to live in Belmont myself some day. Belmont is a pretty cool town if you ask me. It has some young, and sometimes over zealous, police force which have been known to strictly enforce the speed limit, among other things. Still somehow they cannot stop a crazy woman from putting up signage and basically creating a public nuisance on El Camino Real @ Ralston Ave, a main intersection. The Cal Train comes once an hour. There are a lot of hills. And people here generally do not smoke: it is a good town. Now if the Belmont Smoke Shop would just do us all a favor and close down we would have something! read more

We all accumulate expired medication. It is just the nature of things. That big bottle of cold medicine that you thankfully didn't finish before January, 2013? Antibiotics your sister or son did not fully finish by day ten? That 100 count pack of Advil that was such a great deal from Target? The police sure love to give out tickets! I agree with the past reviews of the police department saying they are quite over zealous. I don't enjoy being very closely followed /stalked when I'm just passing through town. Not to mention one of the officers barging in my friend's backyard because he thought we were the people that climbed the roof of cipriani. No reason he should of done that. The worst thing about this town is the police. They're quick to worry about a jay walker, or someone petitioning in front of a store... but call them because a drunk driver almost running you over (a 45 minute wait) or you witnessed a man break into a building, take something, and run off (they never came), have your car burglarized (20 minute wait) and they are no where to be found. I also live literally 1 minute away, so the wait-times are amazing..... My last straw was when some tweaker was following me home from the train and they NEVER sent anyone to come. If you DO need these jerks, you can find them in the day time chilling by 101 to catch speeders or at nighttime at Chucks doughnuts. read more

Got pulled over today for my old plate that I never had a chance to replace had a expired tags. I believe the officers last name was Collins. He was really nice he even told me that my license was expired. There was other things that he could of give me a citation for but him and another officer were really nice to let me go with a fix it ticket. They were super nice to me the whole time. The City of Belmont has a very unresponsive, over zealous, and underpaid police dept. I have lived here 30 years and over that time have been witness to 4 incidents involving dangerous situations. The response times were very long and in all instances the police were rude, unwilling to help, and unprofessional. In one instance, the responding officer was downright abusive. I contacted the superior officer in the last episode and finally got a professional response. I highly recommend videotaping any and all encounters with this department and going directly to the top if there is a problem. While some of the officers have been polite and professional, a sizable number have not. The public works department is equally bad. Caution to anyone taking a child on a hike in the open space. The City of Belmont is woefully neglectful and refuses to post speed limits or any rules for mountain bikers - who endanger pedestrians as they careen wildly at high speed on the trails, without a care as to whom they may hurt. Every other community in this area with open space DOES post rules and bicycle speed limits. Yes, the very strident bicycle activists who insist that they are vehicles with every right to the road as a car, are now saying that pedestrians on trails built for pedestrians must watch out for THEM. I suggest that you do watch out, as I've been hit twice. Of course , despite numerous complaints and even a death, the city has done NOTHING. Incidents involving bicycles in the open space are not even printed in the local police blotter. The city workers will even tell you that they allow bicyclists free reign in return for the bicyclists doing 'upkeep' on the trails - upkeep the city is too stingy to provide. I see no evidence of this 'upkeep'. In fact , mountain bikers have contributed to the development of deep ruts and severe erosion on the trails due to their biking when it is too muddy to do so. So the trails are something out of the Wild West and its 'anything goes' in Belmont - unless, of course you smoke or don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Those infractions are addressed swiftly and with surprising ferocity. read more

Chili cook offs, music in the park, a decent selection of restaurants of all cuisines, a few markets, a couple pharmacies, and other shops and services for everything and everyone. A good mix of middle and upper class Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians. Auto Row south! is what I like to call Old County Road as it has shops for every make, model, and part of your car (bias to Spiteri's.) Good schools abound for all grade levels. I am a proud alumni of Ralston and Carlmont. Who can forget Chuck's Donuts and Holiday Liquors which to this day are still two popular staples. This city, though small, packs a big punch as far as offering a lot for everybody. The fire, police, and public works departments do a wonderful job of keeping the city safe and in good shape. read more

Rents are soaring and the 707 Old Cty rd. in Belmont is now raising another $100.plus $50 a mo. for utilities. That's a first since I've lived here. The rents went up $200 a mo. since last year. Now over $2050 for my 1 bedroom. They fired the good gardners and hired gardners that don't do their job. Our new notice is soooo strick I feel I'm living under Hitler. Scary! Yet There are so many trees and pollen, cars are covered and we can't even hose off because of water shortage. Gardners don't clean up the leaves but blow pollen. I have had bouts of asthma since living here. What part of " the middle class can't afford these greedy rents " don't these billionaires understand. They are driving the working class out of Calif. i will give 2 stars for the city. but i will give 1 star for the belmont pd. i called belmont pd and asked to talk to officer******** and another officer who answered the phone said" who you, i repeated i had just told him, he asked if i knew to whom i was calling to, i said belmont pd, he said if i knew the officers who i was wanted to talk last name , i said i forgot it. he said, i can not help man, i said well officer ***** called and asked me to call him back. he said again man can not help and hung out the phone, but what surprised me was the tone of voice he spoke to me. calling man, not sir. and very aggressively. now, i wonder what would be this officer's community relations training! i spoke with another officer from another agency and he told " my friend that is what you will get from belmont officers" and he also said perhaps my accent was the problem. he has gotten few complaints form other pepole regarding belmont officer. and most complaints were from people with an accent. read more
