I am not an experienced cat person but I have never cut my cat's nails short enough for them to bleed, let alone drawn blood from multiple nails on multiple paws. She has a vertical and horizontal scratching post but her nails do get long every ~2 months and I finally decided to take her to a groomer. I would have better photos but she did not want me touching her paws (she is usually more agreeable). This was her first and last grooming. For $90 I expected better and while the staff were friendly and welcoming, and it looks like a great place to buy treats for dog owners, I can't imagine doing this to animals for a living. I understand that cats are not 100% cooperative, but I would MUCH rather her have come back with untrimmed nails AND / OR have the staff tell me that she had bled, as opposed to me finding out when I got home... what the fuck. If your cat is more than just a commodity to you, I would recommend trying to find an ethical pet shop with ethical workers OR grooming them yourselves. Today we brought our 3 year old pup to Belmont Pet Shop to get his nails clipped. I had brought him before when he was very young and when Loretta was still the owner. I have to say how completely unimpressed I was today. My Pup is such a good boy, we have had his nails clipped a million times and never have had an issue until today! The young man came out and got our pup and brought him back. The young woman up front was super sweet and very chatty! The young man, very kind. My pup was apprehensive. He's a vizsla and usually goes to anyone looking for a friend. He went in back and we were looking at the parrot around the corner. We heard a bunch of yelps and barking that almost sounded like it was being smothered. We came around and our guy was done. We had then been informed by the owner that he had bitten her. Again- he gets his nails clipped very often, he's NEVER BITTEN ANYONE!! Ever! We cannot stress enough how apologetic we were that he bit her! Again, this has never happened so we were as shocked as she was. She told us she was fine and that she just had to clean her hand. We apologized profusely to them. They offered him a treat (which he never refuses and did) and again apologized. The young man suggested that we play with his feet to get him used to people touching him? Maybe we should, I don't know but it was still awful. Our pup was breathing with a choking pant. It was almost alarming. When we returned home, our poor guy ran away into the back yard when we noticed his poor belly, legs and "calf" area. I attached pictures for reference. I don't really know what happened, but I'm pretty sure a dog shouldn't look like this when they go for a nail clipping! I understand that their job isn't easy, but if the struggle was that much- I wish they had come out to get myself or my husband. We were on the other side of the wall. I wanted to love this place and how accommodating they were, and the staff were very kind...but with how we left, I can't. It has been almost two hours later and he is still shaking. Per order of his vet- we have to watch him tonight and if he is still lethargic in the morning- we have to bring him in to be assessed! I hope that this isn't how your pets are treated! read more

I have been bringing my dog here for grooming for a couple of years and this last time has left me just so angry. I used to see Aaron when he worked there but now that he is gone, Kaitlyn has groomed my dog the last two times. The first time she saw my dog she let out a very audible huff and told me that he was going to take all day because he was going to need breaks because I haven't had him groomed in years. Not true. I had literally just been there a few months prior to see Aaron. She just seemed like she hated her job or something. This last time I brought him which was on New Year's Eve, all seemed fine with drop off. When I went to pick him up she told me that she wasn't able to groom him anymore. That he was aggressive with the dryer, he was super anxious and almost broke the table, he had diarrhea and he was just really uncooperative. I literally had to ask, "are you talking about Duncan the golden retriever?" I truly thought she was talking about a different dog. I'm sorry but this just doesn't seem right. My dog is the most chill dog, never even heard him bark, and he tolerates my two small children climbing on him, brushing him, dressing him up, etc without even a hint of aggression. I'm not saying that she lied and none of this happened but something is obviously not right there. My dog is very sensitive and can pick up on negative energy, and the first time she saw him she was already aggravated with him and was probably a little rough when handling him. When I dropped him off with Aaron he would run to him, tail wagging. This time he didn't want to be there, was trying to leave and just seemed anxious. I dropped him off at 10am and he wasn't ready until 5. He's been moping around the house and just not himself. Even my dog walker was absolutely shocked when I told her. The only good thing I have to say is he looks really good and smells really nice. read more

My experience with BPS was pleasant and friendly. I was in awe and impressed by the Chew selection and the many gourmet foods and snacks available. I popped over for dog booties but, unfortunately, they only offer the rubber disposables. I'd never put those on my baby bcz the opening is too tight. Upon entry I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the selection and loved the set up. The associate was also very friendly and helpful. However, based on previous reviews it's unlikely I'd ever use their grooming services and will stick to food/snacks. I'm adamant about supporting local businesses and try to do so as much as possible, but my baby is my baby and I'm a mother bear when it comes to his well-being. I am coming to this store, probably since 2007, when it was in the previous location under the ownership of Kaitlin's mentor- who used to give me lots of advice about dog care when I was a rookie dog-owner. Kaitlin was working there as groomer. Now, she owns the store. I always have excellent experience about Kaitlin and her team. I have two large dogs that can be quite difficult to handle. An extremely lazy, 100+ pound black lab who uses his weight against you. Brushing him at home can be difficult because he tends to lie on one side and refuses to move. The second dog, is an energetic, highly neurotic and anxious 90+ pound labradoodle who requires two groomers to be controlled. Both are sweet friendly dogs that can be quite a handful. The groomer that I had used for my dogs' whole life stopped grooming. Thus began the search to find the perfect dog groomers! And I found them! After taking my dogs here twice I have been inspired to write my first yelp review. Brian and Kaitlin have done such a wonderful job on my two boys! They brushed the lab out and got so much fur out that he didn't shed for weeks! The labradoodle got such a nice haircut! Both dogs smelled and felt to clean for weeks after the grooming! These groomers don't cut any corners. Upon first meeting Brian and Kaitlin, they presented themselves in a professional and friendly manner. I liked how the first thing they asked was my dogs name. As a pet owner, it showed that my dogs came first. I always get a little nervous leaving my boys somewhere new. But my mind was put at ease after seeing the groomers' initial interaction with my dogs. After having them groomed there, I will never bring them anywhere else! The groomers, owner and workers are extremely pleasant and helpful. The highlight of my trip was seeing the big beautiful parrot in the back of the store in his big, spacious cage, away from the hustle and bustle at the front of the store. Belmont Pet Shop was referred to me as we needed to find a place to board my two Guinea Pigs for two weeks. Funny as I could not find a place near me that was reputable, affordable and didn't give me a hard time for being away "for so long" (as one place put it). But I am so thankful to have met Sia and her caring team at BPS! Not only did they treat our Guinea Pigs like their own pets, they were so helpful in making their stay comfortable, helped us set up and breakdown their habitats (and trust me, we had a lot of stuff!) and kept their cages super clean. I had a great vacation partly because I knew our little ones were in good hands. As we look forward to our next vacation, it brings peace of mind knowing I can take Toni and Junior to BPS! I just got back from belmont pet shop and I'm Extremely Upset DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG THERE !!!!!! I took my dog for grooming for first time and Obviously LAST TIME !!!!! First they told me they will charge $75 dollars for my dog who is large when they saw him. When I came back to pick up my dog once he was done they ask to pay $190 dollars. so absolutely ridiculously. I understand he is a big dog but tell me the actual price from the start!! Took my cat here to be groomed and she has never been the same since. Her hind legs/back don't work the same. She can't jump up on the sofa or bed anymore and walks differently. I think they handled her rough and fast. Also, the groom job was pretty bad but I don't care so much about that. I feel bad that my poor cat has trouble now. Coincidence maybe but it was a really drastic difference. She's never had issues jumping up on furniture until the visit there. I had to get her pet stairs to get on and off the bed. Drastic difference. I get an eerie feeling when I go there. They keep a big parrot isolated in the corner and I feel bad for it. I stopped going and would recommend finding a different groomer. I have taken my dog (Yorkie-Bichon mix) to Belmont Pet Shop three times. All three times he has been groomed by Caitlyn. I am infuriated that my dog was clearly not taken care of his most recent visit. Let's go back to the first day I visited the shop though . . . . Not even a hello from Caitlyn just "What is his name?" "What Breed" "Your name" . . . She got right to the point so I figured she was busy. EVERY TIME I go there it's "DO YOU EVEN BRUSH HIM?" "HAVE YOU BEEN BRUSHING HIM?" Yes, actually I have. I even purchased a special brush the first day he was groomed there to ensure I was using the correct one. My dog has hair that is a mix of yorkie-bichon so it gets matted very quickly. I brush him frequently, what else do you want from me? I don't need to be scolded when I drop my dog off to be groomed. Each time I go in there she says "Well he's matted so there WILL be an extra charge for brushing. And he should just be shaved" How about you attempt to brush him first instead of insisting on shaving my dog down to the skin? Now fast forward to my most recent visit. I dropped him off and was scolded AGAIN for "Not" brushing him. He was 2 weeks over due for grooming so yes, he was much longer haired than usual . . . . sue me. I dropped him off at 3 and received a phone call back at 5 to come and pick him up. Oh and she made sure to say BY 5:45 P.M.. I'm always there within 20 minutes of you calling me, no need for the demanding tone. I picked him up and left. Upon getting home I started to notice he kept licking his paws. After looking at his paws I noticed nearly every single nail was nearly SPLIT in half. In fact one was completely split in half. I was so infuriated!! I attempted to call but the store was closed at this point. I called them the following AM and asked to speak to a Manager. She completely brushed it off, apologizing but stating "It's not like Caitlyn to be like that?" Really? I'm pretty sure by reading other Yelp reviews that I'm not the first to complain of being scolded by her. On top of that, sorry is all you have? How about offering a refund of my services and attempt to get me to stay? No? I didn't think so. This place has the worst customer service I have ever experienced in a pet store. Every time I walk in I feel like I am a bother. I have been in there three times and all three times a different person has been at the front desk. And all THREE times, Caitlyn has been nothing but miserable. Put a smile on. People are leaving their pets in your care. Pets are people, they are our children. Once people start reading labels and educating themselves about what their pets are really eating with brands of pet food sold at the supermartket its only then will they really appreciate this pet store. They stock all the very best brand of the best food you can feed your pets. They have brands that are very hard to find and not available at the big commercial pets stores. FYI- IAMS is just as bad as Alpo. Read the labels. you pay more for junk. Plus, the test on animals keeping; dogs in cages their entire lives. BOOOO! Love this store. However, I too feel very bad for the beautiful large red parrot that is stuffed in the corner in the the backroom with no windows, or sun. Brought my older dog here today and was so happy with the results! He is a husky mix and has a very thick coat, if it isn't brushed out and dried properly he gets hot spots. Brian was so nice and had a clear understanding of what needed to be done with Scotty's coat. I have never felt so comfortable leaving my dog with a groomer before! When I returned to pick him up, Scotty's coat was well brushed and super clean and soft. Once again Brian was super nice and Scotty seemed so at ease! Went for a grooming. They were very rough with my dog which made me feel worried in the beginning but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Instead of four hours my dog was there for 8 hours. And then they overcharged me. The price went from 125$ to 175$. I had my son go pick up the dog but they wouldn't even let my son see him until I paid over the phone which was very suspicious to me. They were very rude and disrespectful. I noticed my dog was extra sleepy and thirsty later. Which was weird. When we woke up today I noticed my dog had a limp. I'm pretty sure they injured my dog and sedated him. I'll be contacting them to find out what happened. read more

My wife and I just took a much needed vacation to Florida. Our beloved ferret, Jasper, took a vacation to Belmont Pet Shop. They board small animals at a very reasonable rate (only $7/day for a ferret!). We wanted to make sure he got some very important exercise and play time. The lady who was working (I'm really sorry I forgot your name, I'm terrible with names) listened intently to me about what his special needs and preferences are and made me feel comfortable that my little fuzzy buddy would be well taken care of. I arrived this morning to pick him up and found him on great spirits an clearly well taken care of. After putting Jasper in bus carrier they even took the bottom of his cage and cleaned it out for me. What wonderful people! We will certainly be back and we are so happy that we found someone to watch our best fuzzy friend whenever we need a mental break from these horrid New England winters. I wish I has thought to browse and see if they carried the food we feed him because it's hard to find and I would love to give a small local business my money whenever possible. read more

I feel so terrible my dog had such a painful and traumatizing experience being groomed here. The worst part about it is when I came to pick her up no one even mentioned anything about all of her raw wounds, including spots where she was bleeding. I noticed her injuries right when I got home including one spot that had caked into a bloody mat of hair. When I called the groomers that evening she said the owner was out of town and I should call her in a few days. When I finally reached the owner she said she had heard about some "brush burns" and would be talking to her staff to get to the bottom of it. I am indeed a real person. Live in Belmont and used the grooming services at this shop. I in fact did contact the shop the same day the grooming happened. The response was lax and unconcerned. The day the dog was groomed Brian was in a hurry and visibly anxious with overbooking. We since found a new groomer. I wish I could give this business a full 5 stars, but I hesitate. I love the idea that this business exists, I really do. They have a great selection of specialty pet foods, that are not found in the major chains. It's a local, small business--one that's worth supporting, however, I am not crazy with the customer service style of the owner, Loretta. I have been going there for about 2-3 years to buy cat food, and especially more lately, since I've started feeding her better quality canned food. There is a certain brand and flavor that I always buy, and when I was there the last time, they were out of the cases of that kind. So, I asked Loretta if I could buy what she had left in stock of the single cans, which were about 13 cans, at the case price. At first, she looked at me like I was mad, and shook her head, "no". But then, she acquiesced, reluctantly, and said, "I will do it this time, but the next time, when we're out, we're out". Sorry, guys, I don't think I was asking for much. It's not like I live right around the corner and have time to check back after the order is delivered. She acted like it was a total inconvenience, and like she was doing me this huge favor, when, as a fellow small business owner, I believe it's the job of the owner to serve your customers' needs. If there was a rating below 1 star, I would have provided it for this place. I took my dog in there for grooming. Brian worked on him twice and both times the dog came back with severe neck laceration, which are most likely due to the way he was restrained. The second time, the laceration was deep enough to permanently leave the dog without fur. I e-mailed and called the store, forwarded to the photos of the dog after the second visit. I never received as much as an apology for anyone. Brian responded with an e-mail filled with excuses and denials. Not sure how the rest of the store is, in terms of other groomers and products. Before finding this store I used to buy my pup's Fromm brand dog food online given that neither the local Petsmart nor Petco carried it. Then I discovered that this store had the brands of food (including Fromm) that I was looking to buy, but would find online only. The first time I went there I purchased almost $100 worth of dog food. I also decided to support a local store and buy from them and not online, although I would have saved a few bucks online. In less than a month returned to buy more food for my pup from this place, and brought with me a Fromm can that I had bought online a few months back and was subject to a recall. According to Fromm's website: "If you have any of the above cans, please return them to the place of purchase or any Authorized Fromm Retailer for return to Fromm Family Foods. To find an Authorized Fromm Retailer near you, please visit frommfamily.com/retailers or call (800) 325-6331. " This store results as an Authorized Fromm Retailer so I asked the owner (I presume it was the owner) to return it to Fromm. The owner, with a smirk in his face and a tone as he had just discovered hot water tells me that I had not bought the can from them, so he was not willing to take it. I never mentioned that I had bought the can from them! I explained that I had bought the can online but wanted to return it in the store given that they were an Authorized retailer and that Fromm would have recollected the can and reimbursed them. This is just normal customer service I believe, if you want your customers to appreciate your services. He refused, continuing to say that I had not bought the can from them, as if he wanted to punish me for that. I did not insist given his attitude, bought some more food for my dog and left. This experience left me with a bitter taste and made me reconsider my decision to support them as a local store. So, back I go to buy my dog's food online, since supporting this kind of attitude and service is the last thing I want to do. I spend at least $100/month on food and treats for my dog, and will certainly save money if I buy them online. It is this shop's loss! read more

Warning: do not bring your pet here for grooming. I am still horrified at what they did to my poor dog. We have brought our dog here a couple of times and they would do a decent grooming job. A couple of days ago, we brought the dog to get groomed and he was so hesitating to enter the shop and was trembling. This should of been my first red flag. Dropped him off around 11 and didn't get a call to pick him up until 2:45pm, another red flag. When I picked up my dog, he looked clean but smelt like urine, weird but I ignored it. When I got home and took my dog out of the car, I noticed his belly was legit on fire. I'm even horrified to post this picture online but I hope anyone seeing this will never bring your pet here. His skin is so raw and red. I'm not sure if it's from a sharp blade or being restrained on the grooming table, either way extreme force was used and it's abuse. My husband went back to get a refund and show them the damage and they had the audacity to say it was "irritation" and that our dog moved "too much" on the table? LOL. What? Honestly makes me sick to my stomach. Now my dog is on antibiotics and recovering from this traumatic experience. Beware and never step foot into this place. read more

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this review. On February 26th at 8:00am I brought our two dogs in for their grooming with Aaron. When I came in to pick up our 3 year old Australian Shepherd, Ruby, at 2:15pm, she took several steps towards me and collapsed on the spot. After several minutes, I was able to finally get her into the car with the help of Aaron. I rushed Ruby straight to her vet, and we arrived at approximately 2:30pm. During her visit at the vet, we discovered severe bruising on her abdomen where it was clearly visible. After some initial tests, the vet instructed us to bring her to the ER. When she arrived at the ER at approximately 3:30pm, she was already in critical condition. She spent the night at the ER while doctors tried to discover the cause of her problems. The next day, on February 27th at 2:00pm, we unfortunately had to make the very difficult decision to put Ruby to sleep. She passed away on February 27th at 3:00pm. Let me preface this by saying that her cause of death was in no way due to anything that Aaron had done. While I was at the vet with Ruby, my wife had contacted Belmont Pet Shop, and they further elaborated on the events that transpired while Ruby was there. An hour after Ruby was dropped off she could no longer stand on her own. They continued to bathe her, groom her and dry her while rolling her around on the floor while she was effectively dying. At no point did they volunteer any of this information, we had to keep asking them for more details. If you love your pets, my sincerest recommendation would be to never bring them to Belmont Pet Shop. While I don't think they would ever intentionally hurt an animal, the fact that it never occurred to them that this was not normal behavior for a dog is startling. If they had contacted us, maybe we would have gotten a few more hours with Ruby before she passed away, instead of her being tortured. read more

I recently moved to the Boston and was looking for a reputable groomer for my Shih Tzu (Benji). I went to Belmont Pet Shop bc of its multiple 5 star reviews. Brian , the groomer who worked with Benji did a good job and seemed knowledgeable about the process. He took the time to talk to me about how exactly we would like his hair cut, ear cleaning, Benji's allergies, etc. The only reason I removed a star was because there are two long patches where the hair is shaved down to the skin on two of his legs. Not sure why. I didnt get a chance to ask him about it because I didnt see it until I left. Other than that, everything was pretty good. They are also very reasonably priced.
