Road trippin' ... Business brought my husband down to Freeport, IL and I had decided to join him for the day. As lunch hour approached we began to weigh our options. A dreadful chain restaurant OR ... try something that only Freeport could offer. We just happen to stumble upon a parking load filled with larger pick up trucks and thought these guys probably know where the good food is at. Walking in, there is a small grouping of tables to your left. Straight ahead a U shaped counter with seating, which looks into the kitchen. To the right, a room with thin green carpet and mauve vinyl booths. This layout made it a little tricky for those of us that haven't dined there before to determine if we should seat ourselves and where to sit. I have to imagine most are locals and know the routine. (We sat ourselves.) The walls are filled with every landscape poster imaginable. Yes, posters. However, they are framed and matted and they cover every square inch of wall space. Ok, now that you can visualize the decor and layout we will get on to more important things ... the food! Extremely reasonable prices and the fare, home cooking. I opted to go for the roast beef dinner. A good call on my part. The meal came with a small house salad and one side. I chose mashed potatoes to go along with my perfectly cooked roast beef. The meat had a delicious flavor. It was extremely juicy and tender. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my potatoes. I was really bummed that they were instant. Given the nature of this establishment I was definitely expecting real mashed potatoes. Oh well. We noticed several tables around us ordering pie with their meal. We don't normally do dessert with lunch, but what the heck. Our first choice was peach, but they were sold out for the day. Since this entire lunch has been an adventure why not try something neither of us had ever heard of? Sour cream and raisin pie. Hmm. Actually very very good. Great, affordable breakfast food. Six of us ate for about $32. We were all stuffed. The biscuits and gravy are plentiful and well made. Pancakes are fluffy and tasty. The breakfast bowls are huge -- so expect leftovers (potato/hash base with egg and meat topping). Good coffee too. Great staff. read more

Worst buffet ever! I'm not exaggerating. I went for their Easter brunch. Service was nonexistent. We had to get our own silverware. Nobody came to offer us drinks. I had to grab some glasses from behind the counter. I went to the restroom to fill them, but the door was locked, so I filled them in the dish sink while the wait staff watched and laughed. Finally one dumb broad asked "do you need water?" DUH! It's your job to watch the tables and know what they need! As for food, I found a few decent things at the salad bar. The deviled eggs were turning orange from having been out for hours. There was gravy slopped all over the hot food bar. The eggs tasted like they'd been poured out of a carton, meaning they had virtually no taste. The bacon was good. However, when I saw the waitress putting more into the serving pan with her bare hands, that ruined it for me. The roast beef was soaking in greasy water and totally flavorless. The "pie" slices that passed for dessert looked like they'd been dropped on the plate from a height of 3 feet. They tasted like crap, too. No tongs to pick up the cookies, you had to do it with your bare hands. I had to reach behind the counter to get my own coffee. This was probably the only time in the past 10 years I walked out of a restaurant without leaving a tip. I will never go back to that shithole again. read more

The Beltline is absolutely the best deal in town. It has great food for CHEAP prices. There really isn't anywhere that you can get the same hometown cooking for such a cheap price. You know they must have good food when you see the lunch crowd is usually farmers and "older" folks. read more

To make this short, the prices are very affordable , anytime I'm in Freeport this is the place I stop. The waitresses are polite and quick. I have not had lunch there if it is like their breakfast this should be good read more
