We stayed in the Rose Suite last weekend. We were greeted by Boston Terrier whose name I can't…read moreremember, but he was really cute. The people were very nice as was the room/sitting room. It's really "antiquey" on the inside, like you're visiting grandma's house. I'm more partial to lighter colors and not much into having all the tables/shelves covered with antique knick knacks but it was still pretty. There was a big Godiva chocolate bar waiting for us on our bed when we arrived- yum! The bed was super comfy but not the best for tall people- it came up a little short for my 6'1" hubby. The bathroom is small with separate hot/cold faucets and a claw foot tub, but no stand-up shower. There is a shower hose attachment and great water pressure, but having to hold it while bathing reminded me of a camp shower- except for the good water pressure part. There is a modern shower to use upstairs too if that's your preference- just ask. They have a large front porch with several places to sit and read- so we did. There's big pool in the backyard with a screened-in gazebo- necessary because of the mosquitoes. Pool temperature was perfect and there are several cats that hang out back there. A huge orange striped cat named "Wally" and his much smaller but same color sidekick "Julia" let me pet them while I was hanging on the side of the pool. That was very cute especially since most cats would want nothing to do with that. It was really hot there but that's not why I went for a swim. The only place within walking distance where we could have a drink was about half a block away- The Choconut Inn. Total dive and full of smokers- that's why I went for a swim- so the chlorine could kill the smoky smell and disinfect any part of me that touched anything in the bar. We then opened the bottle of wine we brought with us and read on the porch while it rained along with thunder and lightning- an awesome summer storm! Breakfast was amazing! Berries and cream, coffee, tropical carrot juice, I think(?) for the first course followed by the best ever egg's benedict with hashbrowns topped with chived sour cream and fresh blueberry muffins. It was all soooo good! (See pic of first course) Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others as well. Just bring books to read, some snacks and your own wine (you can't buy alcohol in PA unless at a bar/restaurant- I know, OMFG!) and you'll have a very enjoyable, relaxing visit.

The Inn on Columbia is my go-to…read moreplace to stay, and, when my niece also enrolled at IC, it became the go-to spot for my brother's family, too. The Inn is a unique collection of houses and rooms close to downtown Ithaca - walking distance! Upon arriving, I'm greeted by hosts Madeline and Kenn--and the most amazing smells from Madeline's kitchen! Between the local apple cider and the amazing breakfasts, I tell myself calories don't count at the Inn. Some things to note: -Kenn is an architect, see if you can get him to talk about the history of building the inn -The Inn is dog friendly!! -Snag the gazebo is you're wanting some privacy -Bring hiking boots and explore the nearby trails -Book early... there might be times you can be spontaneous, but for big weekends (alumni/reunion, commencement), the rooms book up WAY in advance

Breakfast offerings change daily and she uses the freshest ingredients; I'm super picky and every option sounded scrumptious. It was hard to choose just one! HIGHLY recommend the Gazebo room; it is a standalone room situated towards the back of the property and is very private and romantic. The decor is simple, yet elegant. It includes an oversized jet tub, spacious bedroom and bathroom and mini fridge. There is also a fireplace in the room and is stocked with lavender toiletries. My boyfriend and I appreciated the attention to detail in this room. We will absolutely be back! Madeline and Ken were happy to recommend activities and restaurants as well. There is a lot to do in the area and I cannot wait to visit in the fall. Parking off-street, wi-fi, delicious cookies and juice served in the evenings, beautiful grounds and the list goes on. You will NOT be disappointed with this lovely bed and breakfast.

Once, on a trip to Tajikistan, I asked our tour operator why everyone on the trip seemed like super…read morepeople and a great trip. His answer was that trips like that tended to be self selecting -- in that case, it attracted adventurers, With that in mind, let me tell you about Humble Hill Farm. If you want the Ritz, walk on by. Crave a great Day's Inn or Motel 6? Keep going. A spacious resort with tennis courts and a huge pool. Don't get out of the car. Want to stay in a small, unassuming farm house in the middle of nowhere? If not, let me tell you exactly what you're missing. Once you enter this tiny (3 bedrooms!!) farmstead, you enter an absolutely magical world. The proprietors, Skip and Patty, are not just world class hosts -- they're world class people! Interested in everything, self-deprecating and witty, great fun, they fall all over themselves to make you welcome -- not as valued guests, but as valued friends. Patty can cook up a storm (breakfasts included), and my 4 day, 3 night stay here included savory omelets with fresh fixin's from the farm, and to-die-for blueberry pancakes. Boy oh boy can that woman cook. I arrived with a really bad back, and Skip came up with all sorts of fun and novel ideas to turn me back into a vertebrate. The rooms were simple but lovely, but the biggest surprise of all was the chemistry. Between Patty and Skip, a retired police lieutenant. Between them and their guests. Between the guests themselves. Think Tajikistan!! The other two sets of guests included a fun loving Indian from Calcutta who arrived by motorcycle with his mainland Chinese girlfriend (wife?) and a husband-wife team of Canadian scientists (the wife was a Vet specializing in wildlife, on a brief exchange program with nearby Cornell, and the husband a biologist, specializing in the study of Arctic mammals, filled with stories about wolverines, caribou and bears.). In the morning, I'd wake-up early and sit around talking with Patty and/or Skip. Then the other guests would tumble out of their rooms, and it would be one big party. At night, everyone would return from their day's adventures, laughter aplenty, and we'd sit around laughing and talking, until one by one we'd head to our rooms --with the luckiest guests heading back last, so that they'd have some additional face time with Skip and Patty. Need suggestions of what to do, where to go, where to eat? Count S&P in! Need a Chiropractor? They won't rest until they've found one and gotten you in. What a wonderful experience, which I hope to repeat in due course -- and hope that you will have the chance to share, too!
