They taught him the skills he needed to manage his ADD and basic life skills; nobody else was able to get through to him. When he enrolled at Hamilton he was at least a semester behind in credits, yet with the dedication and determination from the Hamilton staff he graduated on-time with his high school class. He is now 32 years old and is a success wedding photographer and lives life to it's fullest potential. I still think of Hamilton often and thank God for sending us to there when my sons fate seemed destined for failure. I very highly recommend Hamilton Academy to any student and parent struggling to obtain the services needed to keep their child on track at the public (or private) school. The reality is there are just some kids who are not suited for the standard school environment. So you visit therapists, psychiatrists, parenting coaches, blah blah blah. Nothing helps. You feel like shit for being such a failure as a parent, and life becomes pretty miserable. Anyone else been there? We went through the wringer with our older child (now 18 and beyond much help) but when we saw our younger child starting to go the same way (lying, stealing, disrespect, etc.) we were ready to try something different. Thank goodness we found Jim Kling. He is really different. For one thing, he comes to your house. He talks to the parents, not the child. He works from the outside in (the kid's environment) not the inside out (how the child feels). He walks you slowly, patiently, through his program that is so simple yet so foreign to us that the two of us (each with a master's degree) had to really work to bend our minds around it. Jim is entirely available by phone or email between sessions to walk you through specific situations or just clarify the rules. It's not cheap, but it works. It's worth every penny. We tried…read moreeverything- parent coaching and counseling, medication and various therapies for our ADHD child, every book on oppositional and ADHD kids ever printed- nothing improved our home life very much or for very long. A counselor recommended Alternative Teaching to us, and it changed our lives for the better, and "better" is an understatement. The system taught us as parents how to take back control over what we will and will not tolerate without getting emotional or resentful. And it empowers our kids with a sense of choice over how to behave and what the consequences of those choices are. Ric has been 100% supportive and available any time we call, following up and working with us long after we had completed the program. There are no miracles out there- we still have to work at keeping our family functional. But Alternative Teaching is the only way that we have achieved results for our efforts. I second the prior reviewer who said that it was expensive but WORTH EVERY PENNY! We are so grateful.

The principal is amazing, the staff is great and the PTO puts together great events. My son and I loved our Mother & Son Bowling night, and my daughter simply loves getting all dressed up and going to the Daddy Daughter Dance with her father. They are very welcoming, yet also keep the building secure. There's a lunchroom/cafeteria, where they also serve hot lunch each day (this is something I didn't have when I attended schools -- at least not until I reached high school). It's reasonably priced (I think it's $2.50 for the student meal) and it gives the kids a few different options to choose from each day. They even serve breakfast in the morning as well! The grounds always look nice, and the building is always clean. This shouldn't be a surprise because even my kids know the janitors. So their presence within the school is well noticed.

I brought him to school early on in the year (he had attended a few days to that point). A non-school related familial issue occurred unexpectedly that day (mid-commute, actually..). When I arrived, Principal Elbert immediately brought me into his office, where we discussed the situation and concerns related to my nephew. He was AMAZING - very kind and sympathetic, and assured me what role he and his staff would play in regards to my nephew's well-being. My brother (nephew's father) has had extensive contact with Principal Elbert - both before the day I sat down with him and regularly by phone throughout this school year. I know I speak for my entire family when I say the communication is appreciated more than we can articulate. I'm so relieved to know that my nephew is in compassionate and capable hands, and that Principal Elbert and the staff are keeping an eye on him and his best interests.
