My son went to Hamilton Academy in the last half of his sophomore year and all of his junior & senior years of High School. Hamilton Academy legitimately saved his life. They taught him the skills he needed to manage his ADD and basic life skills; nobody else was able to get through to him. When he enrolled at Hamilton he was at least a semester behind in credits, yet with the dedication and determination from the Hamilton staff he graduated on-time with his high school class. He is now 32 years old and is a success wedding photographer and lives life to it's fullest potential. I still think of Hamilton often and thank God for sending us to there when my sons fate seemed destined for failure. I very highly recommend Hamilton Academy to any student and parent struggling to obtain the services needed to keep their child on track at the public (or private) school. The reality is there are just some kids who are not suited for the standard school environment. Hamilton is the best option for these students when it comes to their education and learning life & coping skills. I highly recommend Hamilton Academy! My daughter would not be where she is at today without this program and the amazing teachers, therapists and staff! We are blessed to have found this school and to have worked with such an amazing team. Hamilton academy provided my daughter with a safe environment to learn and cope. She developed trusting relationships with both her peers and teachers. She also learned life long skills to manage and advocate for herself as a person with a disability. I really don't recommend this school for any parent of a child with a diagnosis other than possibly anxiety/depression. This school represented that they were capable of educating my son with schizoaffective disorder. I was so optimistic, but quickly realized they didn't understand his visual problems and that he would shut down when things were difficult for him to see and would punish him for not completing assignments, in his 8 months there, they refused to *even once* let him go to the art studio with all the other kids when art is really therapeutic for him, and they knew b/c he spends hours doing origami, they rarely sent parent updates and I had to constantly ask for information, I tried to frequently communicate and would either receive no response, or they would disregard information completely - for example I told them my son had been throwing up medicine, was hospitalized, and unstable in a particular week, and they responded by punshing him for misconduct which was uncharacteristic of him and he had not done in the prior months. If a kid with schizoaffective disorder is vomiting medicine and hours out of the hospital, they are barely stable, what in the world is punishment going to do? You can't punish a schizoaffective episode out of a child - so after they informed him he was on in school suspension for something he had done the day he became hospitalized, he flipped out and ran out of the school, and they didn't even make an attempt to see which direction he went. They were too busy complaining to me on the phone about him and informing me he was expelled and the fact that he was MISSING FOR HOURS was a complete afterthought. I was sobbing b/c I knew how unstable he was and nobody knew where he was. Now I have to scramble to find another school that isn't completely horrible in May, when if they had just *ever* tried not punishing him, calming him down, letting him go to the art studio, being sensitive or compassionate to how hard it is to be a kid vomiting medicine, hospitalized for weeks (he's back in the hospital after that situation hearing voices - honestly, an in school suspension for a kid hearing voices? If he could be more stable, he would!) he might have been able to stay, because he had no history of doing this in the prior 8 months he was there. Really, really don't recommend this school, they don't understand children with the disorders they claim to be able to educate. :( read more
