Ah, this place is really a 3.5. Food wise they are on the more spicy side than other hunan style restaurants nearby. Frog pot is quite tasty but a bit too spicy for me. I can tell they use pretty good ingredients, the winter melon soup with pork spareribs uses good part of the ribs. Pork liver is a bit overcooked. They use a lot of oil for their dishes some of them are soaked in it so be aware when you order. Service wise, I am a bit disappointed. Their server was not nice nor attentive. Gives a strange vibe when we walked in. Also they were bad mouthing some customer while I was sitting close to their counter and I wasn't sure if they were talking about me maybe? But all I asked was if any dishes could be made none spicy for my 2 year old. One of my go-to place for spicy Hunan style dishes in the 626 area. Friendly staff and typical small sized Chinese restaurant feel. So far we've tried the house special beef, frog, pork kidney, pork liver, pickled long bean, and preserved pork. Almost all dishes so far were well prepared with good flavor, wok hay, and heat. The frog and liver were the best ones. The kidney dish was definitely overcooked when we ordered it (not sure if it's just a bad day). Came here with my husband and we ordered the mashed eggplant with century egg, hot and sour potato shreds, house egg fried rice, and duck with konjac in beer. The eggplant and duck are their most popular dishes and it shows. Everything was super flavorful with a nice spicy kick. Its definitely called Ben Chili for a reason. Only thing that caught us off guard was the fried rice taking the longest to come out out of everything. We actually had to ask our server to check on it. Service was a bit mixed overall, though they did have a full house so I get it. Better service and this would have easily been a 4 star for me. The interior is hard to describe. Plastic stools, baskets as ceiling lights, and handwritten chinese characters on cardboard walls. It gives off a village shop vibe that I honestly cant decide if I love or not, but it adds character. On the plus side they pack your leftovers for you, which was a nice touch. Parking is easy since its in that big shared lot with 99 Ranch and other shops so no complaints there. I've been meaning to dine here for a while. So I can thank a new app I was trying out, for this "visit." The app seemingly has photos of every dish on so many menus and the Ben Chili menu caught my eye. I ordered three items for pickup which were ready before the pick up time. I remember reading one review saying the food wasn't that spicy, but my takeout order definitely brought the heat. The dine-in portions are noticeably bigger, so maybe the same amount of chili in a smaller takeout portion hits harder? I ordered the 18-second flash fried beef (good), stir-fried beef with wrinkled peppers (very good) and stir-fried glass noodles with pickled cabbage (loved this!!). The beef dishes were good but intensely spicy. Every spoonful was speckled with chili, and the beef was sitting in a layer of chili oil. The heat dominated each bite. If you love bold, fiery flavors, try these beef dishes. I absolutely loved the noodle dish, think of wide rice noodles but yam noodles instead. I literally enjoyed every single chewy bite. This was on a Friday and I picked up my order just after 6pm. I was greeted upon entering and told to walk to the back to pickup my order. The restaurant was full with a few people waiting. Everything we ordered was extra garlicky. Not spicy at all, I didn't even made a dent in my rice. But the rice is actually pretty good.. we packed the rice to go. Cute decors, about 13 tables and plenty of staff. Order place via QR code, once you submit, the serve comes over to double check your order. Glad there's finally a good Hunan restaurant in this area and we no longer have to drive over to West SGV. Came with a party of 5 on Friday evening around 6pm and there were about 8-10 parties waiting for a table. Seemed pretty busy but the tables were turned around quickly. The hostess kept our table active as we were still waiting on some parties to arrive, but we had the option to order first to speed up the process. Food Everything tasted amazing! The highlight for me was the sauerkraut fish, it had a good amount of acid in combination with spicy and rich umami. The spice levels were perfect, some dishes were spicier than others. The spicy beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, the celery in the dish gave it a refreshing taste contrasting the richness and spices of the dish. The eggplant with chili was also a huge hit amongst the group. Hunan food is known for smoked meats so we got an order of the smoked meat with celtuce and the smokiness of the entire dish was on point. One thing I really enjoy about the food here is how well the vegetables are cooked to the perfect temperature so it's still crisp, most places overcook the veg and it becomes soggy. Second time here. Came here with friends after a 6-mile hike at the Chino Hills State Park which is about 22 minutes away. We ordered the signature beef dish, the egg century eggplant, the spicy intestines, and sweet rice sticks. The beef was delicious! The egg plant with the century egg has already passed the test and going to be our regular must-have dish, so is the sweet rich sticks. I didn't care for the pork intestines, too chewy. It reminds me of Christmas when I saw the dishes covered with green vegetables and red chili peppers, LOL! There is usually a line waiting; however, it moves quickly, so be patient. Tried this cute little Szechuan spot recently and was pleasantly surprised at how trendy the decor is. The plaza has plentiful parking. The restaurant itself was pretty packed on a weekday night so we had a short wait for a party of 3. For food, we got the braised tofu, spicy beef and pork with chili peppers. All the dishes were pretty solid but the only one that really stood out to me was the tofu. Such an impressive spot for dinner if you want something spicy! It's a delicious kind of spice, and not numbing like Szechuan spice. The wait was a bit insane (1.5 hour) on a Friday night so I would recommend coming on a random weeknight (not Fridays or weekends). The service was great and while we were one of the last to get seated, they still provided excellent service and amazing food. The flavor of the dishes was very impressive, though salty. So so so good even though it's all spicy, the dishes have distinct flavors to them. I ordered here more than a handful of times already and my favorite is the stir fried egg chili and the flash-fried beef chili, but honestly they're all very delicious. I can eat several bowls of rice with their dishes because they're just so damn addicting. One thing I noticed is that they seem to have more options in the Chinese menu (not 100% sure, but my Chinese friend couldn't find the same item in the English menu that was found on the Chinese menu). Portion is also a bit small for the price and there's almost always a wait for dine in. One tip is to just order to go its ready within 15 min whereas if u dine in u might have to wait. Very concerning hygiene issue. I personally watched an employee handle/change a trash can while wearing gloves, then continue wearing the same gloves to serve food to customers without changing them. When I brought it up, the person I spoke with was extremely rude, refused to provide contact information for higher management, and gave conflicting answers about whether they were the manager or store manager. The only thing I know is that their last name is Zhu. I also asked them to inform the customers who had already been served, but from what I observed, no meaningful action was taken. If this is how a member of management handles such a basic food safety issue, it makes me seriously question the hygiene standards of this location. Who says you can't find authentic, fiery Hunan food in the U.S.? 笨辣椒 (Ben Chili) is hands down the spiciest and boldest Hunan restaurant I've tried here . Even sitting in the dining room, I could hear the wok sizzling in the kitchen -- the chefs were stir-frying like crazy, and the dishes came out looking and tasting amazing, full of "wok hei"! On the table there was even a little note: "If the heat is off, we'll re-cook. But less chili? Absolutely not." Haha, they weren't kidding! My two little girls were gulping down water with every bite -- my older one loved it, but the younger one was almost in tears from the spice . I think if we keep coming back, they'll build up some "iron tongues" soon! Bonus: when you order their signature dishes, you get their refreshing lemon water for just $1.99, with unlimited refills. Such a nice touch! Here's what we tried: * Signature Chili Beef Stir-Fry - lives up to the hype, super spicy and insanely good with rice * Claypot Stir-Fried Pork Kidney & Beef Tripe - perfectly cooked, tender yet crunchy * Braised Pork Belly (Banquet Style) - slightly spicy, but not overpowering. Found this place as we were looking for another restaurant in this strip mall. The outside of the building is quite modern but the minute you stepped inside, the decors will transform you to an eatery place in Hunan. The cute little farmers market stand and the red strainers and stool lamps are unique. They have an extensive menu to select from. We ordered the18 second flash beef, Hendong crispy tripe and braised bean curd sticks. Ordered the medium Spicy so you don't burn your mouth. All dishes were a bit salty for our tastes. Even the bean curd casserole type soup was a bit salty. Everything was good except all of our dishes didn't come out at once. We had to wait at least 10 minutes before the last dish was served. We got there around 5:30pm on a Saturday evening and there was no wait. But around 6pm the line staring queuing up. They clearly do not understand Chinese cooking techniques at all. The pork liver was overcooked and had the texture of a rubber band. The dish that was supposed to contain pork belly and dried tofu had no pork belly in it at all. The server tried to argue that the pork belly was at the bottom of the bowl. After I turned everything over and showed her the bottom of the bowl, she finally admitted that she had lied and said the kitchen had run out of pork belly. When I was asked to choose another dish, she even rushed me to decide quickly. They simply do not know how to cook Chinese food. They are simply using their poor cooking skills to deceive people who know nothing about real Chinese cuisine. So many people patiently waiting for this restaurant. I wanted to try it out and I waited for an hour even though I started waiting not long after they opened. I have to admit there wok stir-fry dish is AMAZING! The high heat paired with 30 years of stir-fry experience from the chef is heaven. It has strong spicy flavor but not at all that spicy. It's not "mala spicy" like Sichuan but still packs a punch. The pictures don't do its justice, you must try it yourself. Will be back, but I have to find someone who lives close to wait in line. If you're a fan of all things spicy and only had three months to savor any cuisine the lower 48 states had to offer, then the House Second Flash Fried Beef Sauteed with assorted Chillis (招牌笨辣椒炒牛肉) here at Ben Chillis, should be on your top 100 last meals. I can cook up pretty decent 湖南小炒肉 at home, I don't consider myself a pro, but it's a doable dish. The 小炒牛肉 house stir-fried beef over here has Kung Fu with every subsequent bite I take in. 刀功細, The chefs put in real knife work, breaking down the beef into evenly balanced small cuts, that when thrown into a wok of fire along with the garlic, different types of peppers, gingers, and oils, you get this perfect harmony of 色香味全 (coloring, aromas, taste, completeness) where no single aspect of the dish overpowers any other aspects of the dish. Making this probably one of the best representations of Hunan Stir Fried Beef that I've ever tried in the United States and I've been to pretty much all the Hunan Restaurants in Los Angeles (辣椒王，紅辣椒，毛家菜from 10 years ago), Ben Chilli takes that honor---- the Best Quick Stir Fried Beef Hunan Style in America. Don't even bother counting New York Hunan or Szechuan restaurants, New York is plagued with Fuzhou chefs that can't cook for the life of them even if you put a gun to their heads and told them make a quality Chinese cuisine. So I rest my case, even the Hunan fermented crispy tofu "長沙臭豆腐" was out of this world, the perfect blend of unsalty diced pickled radishes, with sambal and minced chilli, peppercorn oils, truly, a dish worthy of recommendation. SINCE WHEN DID TIPPING BECOME MANDATORY!?!? And to chase us because we gave "too little"? I rarely leave any reviews in general, let alone bad one.. But I really can't stand this one. I went here multiple times and never had any problems so I don't know what the issue was today. Our server did the bare minimum, such as just bringing out dishes. There were no check-ins, no asking how everything was, and no real attentiveness throughout the meal. So at the end of our meal, my friend and I split the bill, and I left a 15% tip on my portion while she did not leave one, based on the level of service we received. After we were already walking to our car, a server ran out to stop us and began confronting us about the tip. She insisted that because we split the bill, we both HAD to leave a tip individually. I explained that I had already tipped and that tipping is NOT mandatory. Instead of handling it professionally, she became visibly irritated and responded rudely in Chinese with, "ok ok ugh never mind." I have never had a server chase me outside to complain about a tip, especially when a tip was already GIVEN. If I had not left any, I would understand her concern, however, I did leave a tip, I guess just not an amount that she's pleased with. What a joke. With that experience, I should've asked her to give my receipt back and change my tip to a 0. If you wanted to require tips, put a mandatory service fee in place. Don't come running with an attitude at customers when they give less tips than you expect, especially when you gave bare minimum service. read more

We ordered their signature dishes: Stir-Fried Beef with Chili Pepper and Bullfrog with Minced Chili -- the spice level was just right, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. A surprise find when our original dining destination was elsewhere in the same plaza. Saw a line waiting even before the restaurant open so we figured give it a try since it must be good for diners to wait. Boy I wasn't disappointed! The dishes are clean flavored with non of the usual fryer oil taste you'd find in other restaurants.
