I needed a new dentist after my dental insurance changed, and Ben Yount had good reviews, so I decided to give him a try. On the surface, everything seemed promising. His staff is excellent. The dental assistant was experienced and made me feel comfortable during imaging, and the front desk, especially Leda, was competent and thorough, making scheduling and billing questions effortless. I had two appointments: a cleaning and evaluation, followed by a crown procedure. Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Yount himself was extremely disappointing, and it's why I cannot recommend him. The first visit already felt off. During my cleaning and evaluation, he spent a surprising amount of time talking about his obsession with watches and how he notices people's watches. This wasn't a conversation with me, it was a conversation over me with his assistant. For a first encounter, it came across as unprofessional and dismissive. When he did engage with me, he asked about my dental care routine and immediately pushed fluoride products, which I don't agree with. My main reason for being there was straightforward: I had a cracked tooth that needed a crown. It wasn't painful; it was just something that needed to be handled properly. I returned for the crown procedure, and that's where things went downhill. During the work, there was constant clanking of metal tools against my teeth. Instruments were dropped, and my teeth were repeatedly bumped as tools went in and out of my mouth. It was uncomfortable and concerning. In all my years of dental care, I've never experienced anything like it. After the procedure, Dr. Yount appeared visibly frustrated with how long it took. Some complications were never explained. When he finished, he abruptly pushed himself back, threw his hands up, and let out a grunt. It felt overly dramatic and unprofessional, especially given the outcome. The crown he placed is so tight that I can't get dental floss through it. When I brought this up, he told me to force the floss through and pull it out rather than flossing normally. While some soreness in the treated area is expected, I'm now experiencing discomfort and tightness in other areas of my teeth as well. I chose this office based on positive reviews and because I needed care quickly. Unfortunately, I now have to find another dentist to correct these issues. While this visit didn't involve upselling as many dentists do, he is a strong advocate of fluoride. Ultimately, the experience showed me this is not the right dentist for me. First impressions matter, and this one was hard to overlook. read more

We had been seeing Dr. Yount (and team) for myself, my husband, and my 2 daughters (15 and 10). I cannot say enough for the team- the hygienists, Dr. Yount, and Leda at the front (so knowledgable and always willing to help navigate the complex billing/apt questions). We had to leave the practice due to a change of insurance and we were so sad. We tried another dentist and quickly realized that we were being scammed- Dr. Yount offered free 2nd look opinions for ALL of us- and my suspicions were confirmed. Dr. Yount was so respectful in explaining that dentistry is practiced differently depending who is see and was so careful to respect the other dental practice. We quickly changed back to Dr. Yount because even if we had to pay out of pocket, he and his team (and the comfort and trust they provide) are worth it. read more

If you're looking for a dentist who really cares and delivers great results, I can't recommend Dr. Yount highly enough! I appreciate his high professional standards and his genuine care for patients. I had some complicated restorative work resulting from a mountain biking accident a number of years ago. Dr Yount acted as my advocate across the other Drs involved in my treatment (orthodontist & periodontist) to ensure there was a cohesive plan to achieve the best outcome. For the challenging dental work needed in my case (permanent crown for an implant where there was also gum/bone loss) Dr Yount worked up a creative approach that worked amazingly well. The hygienists here are friendly and very thorough, I easily get an hour with the hygienist for a cleaning and as you know most places don't do that. Ben is honest and an overall great guy. I have been going to Dr. Yount / Dr. Gregory for many years. This practice was recently transitioned to Dr. Yount as Dr. Gregory is moving on. While I had my initial doubts about Dr. Yount even before meeting him (I'm afraid of the dentist and Dr. Gregory was a great one), all those doubts have subsided since I've met him. Some time not too long ago, I had some major pain that was coming from one of my top teeth. It had gotten so bad that I couldn't chew. I called Dr. Yount on a Friday night and he had given me some advice on what to do. He said if it was still bothering me, he told me to call him on Saturday morning. Saturday morning came, I was still in pain, and he said he would meet with me right away to check on it. He did a bunch of tests just to be thorough and found that nothing was wrong (the pain did eventually go away). It's not everyday that someone is willing to go the extra mile. What he did told me he is an excellent replacement for Dr. Gregory as Dr. Gregory has been kind enough to come out on Saturday's even when he plans. Dr. Yount is definitely on the conservative side; he won't tell you to do certain things such fix a teeth unless he feels it is in the best interest to do so (meaning he won't recommend something just to make the money). He would give you the best options and is up front and honest about his opinions. In the time I've gotten to know him, I have found that he is a great dentist, someone who cares about his patients and is personable. I would highly recommend Dr. Yount if you are in need of a great dentist. read more

I was referred to Dr. Yount. Having had 4 different dentists all my life, I will say Dr. Yount is the best! He spends time talking to you, we both have a keen interest in cars so we hit it off right away. Before I visited Dr. Yount, the last time I had been to a dentist was 2004. My last dentist looked in my mouth for 30 seconds and left after the hygienist cleaned my teeth, it felt very impersonal. Dr. Yount however spent time talking to me about my brushing and flossing habits. Turns out I was flossing incorrectly! He showed me the proper way to do it, and I see a major improvement in my gum health. Before they were very sensitive, but after flossing properly they feel great! I want to thank Dr. Yount again for taking the time to talk to me, and did I mention how gentle he is? My god, my other dentists have been rough, but not Dr. Yount, he's very gentle and caring. Thanks again Dr. Yount, I will return to San Mateo for my next teeth cleaning/exam! read more

Zero complaints. The hygienists in the office do a great job of cleaning my teeth. Scheduling and billing is easy. Dr Yount is a very nice guy and i have confidence in his care although I have not needed it, he's just done regular check ups. The only negative is that they don't do Delta Dental HMO, which is what my new insurance is forcing me to switch to so sadly I have to find another dentist. I'll miss my semi yearly teeth cleaning at Dr Yount's office. read more

First off I have dental anxieties from being traumatized as a youth.I am 60 now and still have total dental anxiety so when Dr. Yount said my filling came out because my tooth chipped I was very worried to be drilled and refilled and getting Novocaine but it had to be done.Dr.Yount made it so painless and easy ,truly my best ever experience with a dentist and his drill.He is the BEST, he made me feel totally at ease,took great care to make me comfortable ,just numbed the right amount so the rest of my face didnt feel anesthetized.He is AWESOME and I have total confidence in him. I recently had two great experiences with this dentist. I had my regular check up & cleaning with my hygienist (who I love) and a cavity filled. I had the chance to meet the new doctor who had taken over my old dentists practice. Of course it's hard to part with a dentist you like but I am happy to have found a new dentist! Quite hilarious having my children screaming their lungs out while I was there but that didn't seemed to bother the staff and they were extremely accommodating. Especially Dr. Yount. It still feels warm and friendly like my old dentist because the same people are there. He worked with me and all my anxiety surrounding my cavity. He counseling me kindly on flossing - I didn't feel scolded at all but really felt he drilled into me to take better care of my precious teeth. Dr. Yount also explained exactly what was going on and helped me feel comfortable with how my teeth felt after my filling. He gave me a follow up call which was impressive because I know doctors are busy. Man when's the last time your doctor called to see how you were doing. I really recommend coming here if you need a great dentist or a place to get your teeth cleaned. Like Dr. Gregory was- he is active in philanthropic endeavors and the under-served in our community who do not have access dental care. He gets all smiles from our family! Five stars for Dr. Yount!
