Retro store that could be a gem but workers are consistently not friendly if you don't look like them. This is Bergen County in the 2020s, 1/2 of the population is minority yet no one in this store is and you feel that every second you're in the store. You will be mostly ignored willfully. PROS: This is the best hardware store around. They have everything you need from home appliances all the way to your car. Normally, I always walk out of the store with the item I was looking for. They are on a side street with a decent size parking lot which makes it a good location: CONS: They are the most overpriced place I have ever been in. I can find the same stuff in lowes or the Home Depot for a quarter of the price at the same quality. Also, some of the employees in there are not that nice. They act as if they just don't want to be there. OVERALL: I think their quality, location and quantity of items are the greatest in the area, however, The home Depot is much better at those aspects. If you don't mind spending extra money, and you live closer to tenafly than a Home Depot, then I recommend this place. read more

Do not do business. The family, well you can tell from the service they look to give retail a bad name. They turned frictionless retail in doing business with family sandpaper. I asked the expert, deck screws. please. He sent me out the door, scratching my way through checkout with materials I could not use. I got in the car, looked at the the screws, box head screws? I went in again and was sold a drill bit. I was followed to the register repeatedly told seventy five cents, right up to the second cashier. I said please and thank you. No acknowledgment of a customer. THE WORST feeling. Better to be lost in Home Depot! read more

I have been going to Benjamin Brothers since I moved into Tenafly in 1977. Frankly I've never been disappointed. Oh sure, on the busiest day of the week (Sat.) when the place is flooded with people like me who need help and don't know what they're doing you might wait a while for help. But, when that person comes, he will spend as much time as it takes to get you what you need and to be sure you know how to use it. This is pure, solid, excellent customer service at its best and it's well worth the wait. There have been times when I've asked "Do I need this?" and been told "You don't have to spend so much let me show you a better idea." What they sell are quality items - not the junk you'll get elsewhere that won't last. If you're a lady as am I, no condescending attitudes ever which truly counts for a lot. And they were equally patient, kind and attentive with my unskilled husband. When I owned a home Benjamin Brothers taught me how to take care of it. As a real estate agent they've been invaluable in helping me to help my clients. Maybe this is a generation gap since I'm no longer young but I'd rather wait the 5 or 6 minutes on a busy day to have someone who's an expert make sure I've got the right item and then explain what to do with that thing. read more

I suppose they're better than Home Depot. However, I fully agree with Rich V and Bob A - It's like you have to take a "clinical depression" test to get a job as a cashier there. Prices are not competitive. I don't mind paying more, but 20-30% more is excessive. Also, as Rich V pointed out, if you're just a DIY'er, they could care less, but if you're a contractor, they will have 3 people clustered around you. Or, if you're of a certain age and you look like you have money. When you're a 40-ish schlub in a t-shirt (sorry, I don't dress up on the weekend), it's like you're a homeless person who wandered into the place. Further agreeing with Rich V, I can't help wondering how much the staff hanging around by the entrance is about customer service and how much is about paranoia concerning shoplifting. This might be a concern in some neighborhoods, but in Tenafly I can't imagine it's a major issue. Third, like most "small business owners," they have an uncontrollable compulsion to publicize their political views. Sorry, but I won't be strong-armed into giving money to the American Legion just because you let two of their old pain in the ass goons commandeer the front door of the store. Fourth, like a lot of retail "small businesses," their customer service policies are from the 1920's. I tried to return an unopened, small item I purchased earlier that same day, as I found what I needed after all in my toolbox -- a box of staples for my staple gun which cost maybe $5. I was told that I had to find the manager of the department for the item (like I know who that is) and get them to sign off on the return. Give me a freaking break. A "manager" standing five feet away proclaimed he was "too busy" to scrawl his signature on the receipt. Sorry, but maybe I'll just go to Home Depot after all. They may spend millions supporting right-wing politics, but at least they do it on their own time and not in the store. read more

Finding a good hardware store with knowledgable staff is hard to find. This place is frequented by professionals, so you know it is the place to be. When you walk in the door you are greeted and asked what you are looking for. The greeter will direct you to the appropriate department where you will find a specialist in that area. It is always the same people in each area, so they know their stuff. The most amazing part of this place is that when the power goes out in the area they do not shut down. Even when they have no power, they are working. The staff will bring you around with flash lights and help you find what you need to get through the tough times. They will always be there for you. This is local family owned real deal hardware store that I have been going to since I was a little kid. So, what do you get here. Excellent customer service, advice, save gas and go local. Huge store with everything you need. I run a business and don't have time to run around to HD and find crap. I know where everything is here and staff to help. A lot of the people who work here have experience in many different areas and can give you pointers for your home projects. However, there have been times I feel I was led astray with products I didn't need to accomplish a task that, when all is said and done, still needs a professional touch. Dumont Hardware is my first stop because it is close by and the owner Bill is a local treasure. Benjamin Brothers is my second "go to" hardware store because they offer a greater selection and they have a lumber yard. Bill always takes the time to help walk me through a repair. Despite the limited space, Dumont Hardware has a most of what I need however the store is not large enough to stock large or uncommon items. In those situations, Bill gladly sends me to Benjamin Bros with good cause. Both these stores top Lowes and Home Depot. Benjamin Bros also has good sales so watch their circulars. read more

A few years back my Dad purchased a grill that connected the gas line directly to the house. He unexpectedly passed away shortly after. The place my mom was going didn't have gas so I called Benjamin Brothers & they came up & switched it with the portable gas type. No problem, no charge. Extensive American and metric hardware selection. The staff in the hardware aisle will locate any piece of hardware you need when assembling something from IKEA, for example. We've all been there, halfway through a frustrating set-up and a screw or bolt or washer is missing. Aahhh! But these guys have the metric sizes for all the hardware and are so knowledgeable.
