Five stars for excellent customer service. Today I had a particularly challenging plumbing repair, for this non-plumber. I went to Reader's and the gentleman with the black and grey wavy hair went the extra mile in first finding the right piece of pipe for the repair, and then cutting the piece to match the one I was replacing. Why exhaust yourself at those big box hardware stores when everything you need is at Readers? Here's why Readers is better: * Time is money. Accomplishing an errand at Readers takes 5 minutes -- literally. A trip to the big box store kills most of the morning. * Sales staff are knowledgeable and plentiful. No need to plead for someone to help you. If you live locally, you probably already know them. * Inventory is a known quantity, and the staffperson generally comes with you to look for what you want. * If something doesn't work, they take it back -- no questions asked. And no long wait at a backed-up customer service desk. * Small doesn't mean less inventory. Readers has most everything. * Fantastic location in the center of Dobbs Ferry's downtown near the post office, grocery store, shoe repair and other shops, so can tackle all your errands in one stop. Bee Line bus service to Readers especially on weekdays is frequent and the stop is down the block. On-street parking and public lots require a shorter walk than the ones at the big boxes; its totally worth the meter price. * They deliver some big items. read more

This is dare I say the greatest hardware store. What more could one ask for? - They stock 1000s of items. If they don't have something, they'll help you get it somewhere else. - They have so much expertise. They are helpful and will counsel you through most any project. - Because of reasons (1) and (2) there are always contractors hanging out there. They know everyone. If you have an electrical or plumbing problem, you can ask them to recommend someone and they won't let you down. - They do all this with a sly wit and a grin and the friendly but bemused tone that can only come from being family-owned and run and local. Readers Hardware is a magnificent place. I am just waiting for the Discovery Channel to do a show for Billy and his crew. I love shopping here. They just about always have what I'm looking for and you don't have to wait to find help, unlike the big box stores. Sales people go above and beyond and have helpful advice. They keep the store well stocked and try to sell quality items instead of just moving any old product to make the sale. I used to buy my go kart wheels here as a kid and bought my power saw here as an adult. You can't go wrong here. read more

Great store. I go here quite often and I have never gone there looking for a part that they did not have. Plenty of workers in the store and all knowledgable about their craft. Not that this review will really matter because it's obviously well-liked in Dobbs. But, these guys are all smug and will give anybody a hard time for any return -receipt or not. Just a great, big boys club but not in a good way. Would rather make drive to Irvington to have a real experience with polite and real people. Service! That is what Reader's True Value gives you. I called on Thursday to get a BBQ for my new house. Over the phone I ordered it and they said it would be delivered and put together free of charge and in or backyard the next day which it was! It was te same price as the large commercial hardware stores without the hassle. I called back for something else and they were incredibly helpful. I guess I found my go to hardware store! Most helpful hardware store around! I bought some composite deck rail from Home Depot online which they refused to help me cut it when I brought them to the store. Asked around different stores no one was willing to help even if I offer to pay them. But the guys at readers helped me out without charge (with the usual sardonic humor other reviewer mentioned)! I'm going to come back here for all my hardware needs even I don't Iive in the town anymore! read more

Mar. 2013. It's been 10 yrs since we moved to Dobbs Ferry. At first I principally used H_ome D_epot - 5 miles and 20 minutes away -- but within 1-2 years I found that using Reader's was a huge time AND money saver. E.g., for a number of small projects, they often found a way to make a group of small parts work that cost me $4 or $5, say, that would have cost me many multiples at HD (e.g. to hook a new washing machine to existing water pipes). On many items they are significantly cheaper than the hardware stores in Tarrytown or Ardsley, e.g., simple light switches and boxes -- even tubes of 100% silicone -- will be 30%-50% cheaper at Readers. They also have a great selection of household goods at a reasonable cost, e.g., Mr. Coffee makers, copy paper, gardening stuff, light bulbs of all types (including the new & expensive CFR's which you might learn don't last as long as advertised). Many bolts, screws, nuts, can be bought piecemeal, instead of unneeded multi-paks like at HD or other hardware stores. Want a 5'5" wire cable w/ crimped looped ends? They do it for you & only charge for 5'5" of cable and crimp clamp, maybe $3 to $6 total for 30 minutes of their effort and use of their crimping machine: you can't beat that kind of service. In short, due to a low retirement income, I'm necessarily a bargain hunter, and Readers helps me A LOT, to stretch my retirement $$. read more
