Listen guys, if you are planning to hold any date night for that special someone... and cheese is one of those items that may seal the deal for you to get a kiss, or anything more (maybe)... you may have the wine, you may have the meat, you may even have the music... but a bad paired cheese will be all that is remembered from your night of careful planning, don't screw up... and the best place to knock down this last piece is here. On this gloomy Saturday I needed a cheese.... not just any cheese, one where someone who was suffering from a mild cold could taste (when you can't smell, you can't really taste!) and enjoy, hence I asked the question, soft of firm.... usually more potent cheese's would be soft... and she picked firm, well go to the guys who know cheese to seal the deal! I came here after the gym, dressed in my gear and once I arrived at the counter I was greeted by, "how can I help!" And I gave him the scenario. With one little thought, and a lightbulb that visually went off in his head he reached for one of the many great cheeses they have here. Challerhocker is what he brought to me, and provided a little sample to see if it was to my tastebuds liking. The cheese, as described on the little sheet, is creamy and has notes of caramel and nuts with a smooth finish... from reading this I would not have chosen this.... but then it entered my mouth, pure bliss indeed, wallet out... take my money! Forget about the fact that I had to impress someone's sick tastebuds, this cheese that the guy picked out was perfect.. let alone I had a sliver of it, and happily I couldn't wait to get home to feed my guest. By the end of the night when my sick lady finally had a bite of the cheese I saw that 'eyes roll back to the head' look.. and just solidified the fact this place is definitely knowledgeable on what they know = CHEESE. If the only "oh's and ah's" you're going to get on this night is from her tastebud's going crazy from the treat you bought... think of it as a victory.. I won't tell you anymore where this is going, but forego the candles and satisfy the tastebuds first... she will be impressed! They don't have a ton of cheese, but what they have is a great assortment that will impress if you need impressing... if you just like to throw money.. well they can accomodate that too! This is a great cheese shop, and in my opinion the best offerings in the market. We walked up and offered a little guidance on our aged cheddar preference. He provided a sample and was spot on. Walking around the market and the name Benton Brothers was very familiar. I had read about them in an article and decided to check it out. The lady was very friendly and answered all of my questions. I'm not a cheese expert by any means, I just wanted to make sure I was getting a cheese I would like. I had a sample of a recommended cheese and it was really good so I decided to buy 100g to bring back to the states. I love cheese and I thank the universe that my lactose intolerance does not extend to cheese. read more

Finest cheese selection in Vancouver. They have a really good Stilton from Neal's Yard in London called Colston Bassett Stilton.

How can you go wrong at a cheese shop? Even better is the delicious selection at Benton Brothers. I love how helpful the staff are in making sure you get just the right cheese and they're not shy in cutting off samples so you can nibble and taste test your way to the right fromage. We were shopping in Granville Island and impulsively decided to get some cheese and bread as a snack. It's just across and down from Terra Breads so it makes a great combo! read more

So many things to try! So many interesting things? What to do? Ask the cheese monger for a taste and a recommendation! We did exactly that and got some great cheese to enjoy. Tell them what you like, what you are drinking, and let them suggest a few things and they'll give you a taste. Also, some of the goat cheese they have are in that 100 mile diet and were outstanding. Hmmm? Why is there only one review for this great cheese shop? I assumed there would be many by now. I have been to the Kerrisdale location a few times, but when my father told me there's one in the Public Market, I jumped for joy. The last time I visited, it was on a very busy New Years Eve. I wanted to get some meats and cheese for our home party that night. I didn't have any specific cheeses in mind except a soft and hard cheese. When I let the expert choose, he hit the exact button. Flashing back a few months ago, I went on a food tour in Paris and was introduced to Brie de Maux. It's a raw French brie which I ignorantly thought was unavailable outside Europe since it's raw. I can easily say it's my favourite brie. Fast forwarding to New Years Eve, was I ever surprised when I was recommended this cheese. I "almost" jumped for joy (must contain myself in public). Our cheese expert must've thought "What a weirdo!". Well I'm glad I was mistaken about the import rules. I wanted to press my luck and ask if they carried Rocamadour which is a goats cheese often made during spring - summer. They didn't this time but was told they can call me when they get a shipment in. Not a lot of places will take your number and physically call you these days. I am officially addicted to their small 1/2 C tub of cheese curds. This is the 3rd time this week that I have picked up cheese curds and just ate them like chips down the street. Even worse is that I eat these with honey. This isn't helping my holiday waist but for some reason I can't stop. I crave their curds. At $5 it's very very reasonable. read more

I am eating the amazing Cave Aged Gruyere (raw) that they put me onto that is one of those brilliant distinctive memorable cheeses that can make an ordinary rainy day seem special. I probably would never have even tried it without their suggestion.Their selections are interesting and diverse, but even better is their ability to match cheeses with one another, other foods, and my own cheese preferences. Seriously, don't be shy. If you let them know what you like already they will have you eating cheese you like even more in no time. I have always had excellent experiences here. Never any attitude and always thoughtful and insightful suggestions. I have shown up looking pretty iffy during studio classes just to buy a small piece of perfect cheese for my lunch and they always treat me the same way. read more

We stopped in for picnic supplies and they had an excellent selection. The guy who helped us was very helpful and made some excellent suggestions. He was nice enough to offer us some small shavings to help us decide. They have a large selection of raw cheese if that is of interest to you.
