As an eyeglasses wearer since before puberty, I know opticians. I have experienced fair, good and very good shops but here at Bergelt, we have crossed over to greatness! Mr Bergelt helped my wife with her glasses, finding a mistake an expensive, well regarded optical shop made and refused or was unable to fix. He found it in about 5 minutes, took her prescription and In a week delivered the perfect vision she expected at a price I could not believe. My prescription changed and instead of going to a shop that has been my go-to place for years, I went here. The last pair I had made (they were very good) at my old shop cost nearly $1000! Here, similar frames (name brand) with high quality lenses with all of the special features like coatings and no line bifocals was less than $400! Sole proprietor, very chatty and with 30 years in the business. Cuts lenses in his own shop. Prices are EXCELLENT, less than what other shops charge even after theIr so-called insurance "discounts." Absolutely no insurance plans accepted here though, you have to file out of network afterwards. I was delighted to see the care Mike took with finding the base curvature and optical centers of my old lenses so he could fit new ones into my old frames. Love finding someone to take such care in making something I wear every waking minute. Shop hours are extremely restricted, it's a hassle to get here when he's open but It's worth the effort, I highly recommend Mike. read more

A woman mentioned the optician was spending time talking about his kid's college fund-- he doesn't have a kid. Moreover, she mentioned Bergelt's "other location": there's only ONE Bergelt Opticians location (and I've been getting my glasses made here for 41 years, since I was nine years old, hardly geriatric). The great thing about Bergelt's and its proprietor, Mike Begelt, is that it IS a small shop. You're going to get the attention to detail you need, whether in picking out frames or in getting your prescription filled correctly--especially if there's more than one thing wrong with your eyes, like me. Mike DOES like to talk to and get to know his customers: that's one of the most positive things about Bergelt's. But I've NEVER seen Mike nor his father before him, ignore a costumer. In fact, Mike is known for cutting off your conversation abruptly in order to get to the next customer. Bergelt Opticians has always had friendly and inviting customer service. It's another wonderful small town mom and pop shop-- the kind I grew up with in MP, and just like The Plaza a couple doors down. The main thing to know about Bergelt's is that they do an impeccable job with your glasses. My eyes each have different prescriptions, plus an astigmatism; Mike makes the most precise lenses; I can see out of them perfectly (I'm due for a new prescription now!). Bergelt's also takes the time to customize: They also customize your glasses if you want them a certain way-- for example, in the mid 1980s, I was looking at the colored glasses that they could make sunglasses out of. I never saw anyone with purple glass in their lenses (way before Johnny Depp wore them) and I lived in NYC. I asked Mike if he could make me purple lenses and he said they don't come in that color. It turns out he dips the glass in a sort of colored coating. Being an artist, I asked him to please try dipping them in red and then blue. Ha! Purple lenses! I never saw anyone, even in NYC with purple lenses until a couple years later. And when my glasses break (say I accidentally sit on them), he always finds the time to fix them. Maybe he's not always able to drop everything, but if it's a minor adjustment, he'll have them fixed by the end of the day. My caregiver drops them off and if he has time he fixes them right away, if not, she'll pick them up later that day. I have been trusting my eyes to Bergelt Opticians for over 4 decades, and they've never let me down. Your frames are custom fitted before you leave the store with your new pair of glasses. There's something to be said about great customer service: you get customers for life. read more

I found this owner operated optician in Morris Plains by chance. His knowledge and experience were very helpful in making my decisions. Most importantly, the timely service and quality of the work was great. I had a subsequent emergency need while I was out of state were and Michael went above and beyond to save the day. Mike Bergelt is the most technically advanced and proficient optician I have worked with in 55 years of wearing glasses. His father was an optician as well. He uses special equipment, like polishing the edges of lenses so they are clear on the edges and performs other extra steps to make the lenses and frames perfect. He's also a wonderful person with deep roots in the community and a passion for helping people. His prices are very very reasonable. Tried to get my eyeglasses fixed at the Morris Plains location. Waited patiently while optician discussed his favorite Virgin island, his kids college fund, his beach house, his retirement plans, his checkbook and other non-eye related topics with the elderly woman picking up her glasses in front of me. After 15 minutes of being completely ignored (not even the standard "be right with you" was offered), I decided to go to Lens Crafters and walked out. The optometrist seemed like a nice enough guy, but you obviously have to be an AARP member to garner a certain level of consideration. Will spend my $300 elsewhere. I noticed the other person leave 1 star because they weren't attended to right away. This place is NOT lens crafters or another factory optical store. If you are looking for a 1 hour turn around on a standard frame and lens then go to a factory optical outlet store, but good luck with the results. If you want the correct frames and lenses that match YOUR needs, this is the place to go. i have been a loyal customer for over 20 years for a reason. Custom tint lenses, prescription sunglasses and special order frames. You will not find another place like this. I have purchased a variety of eyeglasses from high end stores at the mall and New York City and nothing comes close to the service I get at Bergelts. read more

They were the only Optician with the expertise to correctly handle my elderly Mother's complicated prescription. When disasters happen they have my glasses fixed the same day. They offer better quality glasses than the fall apart junk you find at the "chain" optician stores and at a lower price. I tell all my friends to go there.
