Dental Visit Experience - September 2, 2025 I received a permanent crown today at 3:00 PM on September 2, 2025, at Berkeley Dental Center. Dr. C informed me beforehand that when she glued-down the permanent crown, I would experience a burning sensation and some discomfort. However, the actual pain was far beyond what I was prepared for. When the crown was cemented, the pain was so severe that my entire body spasmed and my legs jerked uncontrollably. It was the most painful dental experience I have ever had in a dentist office. At no point did the doctor ask if I wanted to be numbed before the procedure, and she never apologized for the intense pain I endured. Instead, she quickly left the room and returned only to ask if I wanted to undergo another dental procedure the same day. After coming home, I researched the procedure and learned that numbing anesthesia is a standard part of crown placement, yet I was not offered it. This experience has left me deeply shaken. I will never return to Berkeley Dental Center, and truthfully, I may never go back to another dentist again. I feel I am now dealing with post-traumatic stress from this experience. read more

Agree with all the other '1' reviews. Very poor business practices. Poor recommendations on how to treat a problem. New dentist solved issue with one appointment. Berkeley Dental's recommendation was to cap every tooth. Bombard patients with unnecessary texts, phone calls. This was an excellent practice that has changed significantly over recent past. My family had been satisfied patients since the 1980s and have had to find another dental practice due to the last 5 or so years due to experience with both the new management and dental staff. read more

I used to recommend this place highly, including referring several friends here. While I was very happy with the service I received from the technician who actually cleaned my teeth, their business practices left a bad taste in my mouth. I would receive random phone calls and texts from them demanding money, without any written documentation. If I asked what exactly I was paying for, I was told only "outstanding balance." I never got a proper invoice with an itemized list of services provided and what my insurance already paid. I assume it was the fault of my insurance, and I always paid anyway. But as a customer it is very hard to verify that charges are correct when there is no detailed documentation provided. Most importantly, I lost confidence in the quality of care. I had been seen for some time for periodontal maintenance cleanings for my gum disease. One day, without any explanation, I was scheduled for less frequent regular cleanings which no longer included measuring my gum pockets. I would love to have "graduated" from the perio treatment but sadly, my pockets were still deep at the last measurement and I still needed the treatment. When I asked the dentist why I was no longer receiving gum disease treatment, I was told that they now treat gum disease with Invisalign. How does that make sense? When I brought up lasting pain and sensitivity from a filling they'd done, they said the treatment for that was Invisalign. They also sent me a barrage of texts near the end of the year encouraging me to use any outstanding dental benefits to purchase... you guessed it... Invisalign. It really felt like they were trying to meet some kind of sales quota at the end of the year, at the expense of true evidence-based care. I just couldn't bring myself to go back after that. It felt so scammy. I'm really sad about it, because they were actually a great provider until last year. One of my friends that I referred also stopped seeing them for the exact same reasons: random shakedowns for bills with no documentation, and lots of upselling from the dentist, especially on Invisalign. Hope that Invisalign contract was worth the customers they lost. I hope they change their ways, because they used to be the best dentist in the Bay Area, and I would love to go back! I just sadly can't trust them anymore. read more

Do not recommend. I had a cavity filled and the Dr. told me I might need a root canal. My question is how don't you know what treatment I need?... just so you can get two treatments for one tooth. Every time I leave here I'm in pain for days and other dentist I've visited after let me know that should not be the case. My mom and sister have had similar experiences which made us all choose another dentist. Do not recommend if you want quality work done on your only pair of teeth! read more

My experience here was unusually bad and felt like a complete scam. I was told that I needed treatment for six of my teeth, but when I went elsewhere, I was told this was absolutely unnecessary. I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

Update: I immediately heard back from Berkeley Dental Center after posting the below review, and finally got a detailed accounting of my situation. They say they are sending me a refund check for about $250. (The discrepancy between what I think I'm owed and what they think I'm owed is apparently due to services I paid for that weren't ever submitted to insurance, because insurance doesn't cover them. This was not well explained in advance.) I've been waiting for a refund for six months. I've spent hours looking at paperwork and making calls. I'm glad they finally have acknowledged that I'm due a refund, and I look forward to receiving the check. Original review: Berkeley Dental Center overcharged me for dental work by $750 and refuses to refund my money, despite months of repeated calls, questions, and clear records from my insurance company showing the difference and overpayment. My story is the same as a lot of other 1-star commenters: I was given an estimate for dental work in January 2022, and told it was based on what they expected my insurance would pay. Of course, they charged me the full amount up front, when the work was done. Fine. But then it turned out my insurance lowered the cost of the work, and paid a larger share than the office estimated. The difference amounted to more than $750. I've been calling the staff here for months, trying to get refunded, trying to get an explanation. If they even answer my calls, I'm always told the same thing -- to call back next week. I will not be giving Berkeley Dental Center any more of my money, and I recommend you don't give them any of yours. read more

I really hate leaving bad reviews but I tried calling to update them on the work they did and of course got no response so I will treat this as the feedback. Like others I have been a patient for 20 years. I have been thru all the changes and tolerated some awful people, but I get that turnover and challenges are part of healthcare. But no one is as concerning as the owner, Dr Evangelista, and I think this is the problem here and its seeping to the entire office, where the manager has treated me with nothing but contempt, even when i raise legitimate issues like why a plan has changed multiple times (ex: i was told i needed to bring in the bite-guard they incorrectly made and charged me for, after being told multiple times at several visits they were replacing it. What are they planning to do with this guard? Give it to someone else? Return it??) So last year I needed an implant, at least I assume so. I recently learned that other recommendations made for more expensive work/filling replacements arent actually needed, so I am even questioning their main dentist. Either way Dr Evangelista did an implant and gave me minimal guidance or expectations for afterwards. I was in far more pain and discomfort than advised. I had to wait hours to get meds since the office cant even fax meds to pharmacies. After waiting months for the implant to heal and being given a completely substandard temp tooth, i got the implant only to have it fall out a month later (while eating soup). The office gave me a runaround for weeks til i was told i had to drop everything and drive to san mateo for a fix, again no restrictions or expectations of how to care for it. Well 6 months after this "fix" i finally went to an expert who showed me how the implant was put in the wrong place. It is already coming loose and needs to be replaced. Further, when I had a root canal while away and and called the office the minute I returned for help there was no one to answer the emergency phone their message said they had and the response I got from the Dr was why did I call on a weekend and not during the week. I cant believe it took me so long to leave but I am a very loyal person and am so sad Dr Tennant's legacy was left to this read more

I scheduled an appointment to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed. At the time of scheduling, I was not given a cost estimate or a treatment plan in advance so I called the office to request that. In the week leading up to my treatment, I made a total of three phone calls to try to get this information. None was provided. Finally on the last phone call I stayed on hold and was given a cost estimate at the very least. Fast forward to treatment day. I arrive at 8:40 for my 9 an appointment, just to be sure. I was not taken to an exam room until almost 9:40 and didn't speak to the dentist actually doing the operation until after 10 AM. No problem, these things happen so I had no issue with the delays. Towards the end of my treatment, the dentist then mentions root planing--first time I've heard about this--as a recommended treatment for me after the extractions are done. He says that it's normally included in the treatment plan for patients of my age (late 20's) and since it wasn't previously discussed, he says he'll give me 50% off. I agree since I want the full treatment and if that's recommended, then that's what I want to do. Next thing I know, one of the office administrators is standing there with a consent form and telling me it will be an additional $1200. At this point I've had four teeth pulled, a bunch of nitrous gas, and 8 local anesthesia shots in my lower jaw, so I wasn't exactly in a position to ask about the treatment or advocate for myself. I agreed. The bottom line is that I did everything I possibly could to avoid surprise fees such as this. I called in advance multiple times, requested a copy of my treatment plan (which I was never provided, though I was assured I would be), and came to my appointment early. There were easily a half dozen times that I would've been happy to talk to the doctor about the additional treatment options and costs. Instead, I'm ambushed with an upsell and a consent form 2 full hours into my time at the office and ended up tripling my out of pocket cost. This is no way to do business. Up to this point, I'd had very good experiences at this office--but this is beyond the pale. I will seriously consider where to seek my dental care in the future and will actively dissuade other patients and customers from using this office in the future. read more

I suppose some new patients are ok with the current situation at Berkeley Dental Center. I had been with the practice for 36 years, received excellent care from Dr. Tennant, then Dr. Gianni, and respectful interactions with the office staff. After Dr. Gianni left, a series of "new" dentists joined. Finally Dr. Tennant retired and apparently sold the practice to a Dr. Evangelista, who is never there. The "new" dentists I had after Dr. Gianni left never seemed particularly engaged, but I assumed I was getting good care. After the practice was sold, everything got worse. Dr. Jennie installed a crown with temporary glue, but she couldn't get it off to cement it with permanent glue. Next two slimey guys from New York showed up. The one I got stated I needed to replace a crown. It fell off within a year. After that, everytime I went in it was a new dentist who took one look in my mouth and said everything was fine, unless they found some way to try to get more money out of me (eg $200 for Invisiline referral, which of resulted in being told, I wasn't a candidate). Slowly, one by one, the nice front desk staff was replaced. During the period after Dr. Gianni left and the practice was sold, they referred me for gum surgery with a periodontist. I was assured this fix would last 10 - 20 years. That first round of gum surgeries was ok, but within 3 years, after the practice was sold, one of the new dentists said I needed more surgery, some in areas where I had surgery in the first round. I agreed to start with one surgery in the worst area. The coverage achieved was good, but soon after a sore bump appeared. Dr. Loul couldn't figure it out and sent me for CT scans, then a visit to another specialist who referred me to still another. After over $500, I hesitated to continue this fruitless endeavor and reflected on the timeline. I realized that the "sore" occurred within a month after the gum surgery and insisted on seeing the periodontist to determine if the issue might be related to the gum surgery. I had to wait 2 months, due to my schedule and hers (still another once a month periodontist). By the time I saw her, it had been 4 months of pain. She looked at it and decided to open it up. What do you know - she left a stitch in the gum! I think I got Berkeley Dental to not charge me for that visit, but that experience, along with the office not accepting my new insurance, cemented my decision to leave, despite having 36 years of records at Berkeley Dental. I was still considering having the added sessions of recommended gum surgery under my existing plan, but decided to get a second opinion. The new periodontist, with a regular office of her own, made a very convincing case for why the surgeries Berkeley Dental had suggested should not be done. In January, I went for a final cleaning in the new year before my current insurance ran out and while I could use my yearly employee benefit. The charges should have been nearly completely covered, and that was acknowledged by the office. In May(!) I received a bill stating I still owed $400 + a small amount. I called Gloria, the office manager, who stated that insurance had not paid. I explained that I had received an EOB that stated they had paid, although nothing from Berkeley Dental for 5 months. She said she would call them. In August she called me and said, that if I didn't pay the $400 within two weeks, they would be referring the bill for collection. I immediately called Delta Dental who confirmed payment had been sent to Berkeley Dental at the end of January. Called back to Gloria who said she would call Delta, and later she confirmed I was right. I said I would pay the small amount due when I received an updated bill, which took another month. When I saw my new dentist, the impact of poor dental care for as much as ten years was apparent. At least I feel I am in good hands now. Besides thinking there was benefit in having 36 years of dental records available (they transferred only a small part of the records), Tennile's great cleaning, and Lupie's compassionate care were the only reasons I stayed for so long. Gloria, from the time she arrived and announced penalties if I canceled closer than a week to an appointment (I told her that in 30 years I had never not shown for an appointment, but things happen and that I had been with the practice forever and never been threatened with being billed for something I might not have control of), her crazy and rude management of billing, along with no continuity of dentists and questionable quality of dentists, drove me away. Maybe you will have a good experience here, maybe the practice will stabilize (I gave them 5 years after the sale, and it only got worse), but be aware that this is not a sole proprietor office. It is run out of corporate along with a number of other offices acquired from retiring dentists. They do not care about your long-term dental health. read more

avoid avoid avoid. i was "treated" by this place a few years ago. the following are some highlights. - the numbing agent began wearing off during the procedure in which i had several extractions. - i was proscribed opiates when i specifically told the doctor i did not want them & the reasons why. - they charged me for a bone graft that was not performed & would not refund my care credit card so had to accept an in office credit. - the dentist never instructed me on proper use of a temporary prosthetic. - & today their billing had the audacity to call me claiming i have a balance of $400 read more

I came looking for a simple cleaning and some relief from a gum being irritated by a crown (from a different dentist many years before). What I walked away with was immense pain and an insanely high bill, all avoidable had I been properly communicated with. Prior to stepping foot in the office, I call to ask, "Do you take MetLife insurance? I'm on UC Berkeley's Student Health Insurance Plan." I ask because I'm a Masters of Public Health student (limited financial means currently) and experience working in healthcare (I know to ask if providers take my specific insurance before I ever go to an appointment). "Yes we do!" I am told with confidence. So I proceed to book the appointment. I get to the appointment and meet with the dentist. Before they begin to do any work, they say "Miss, we need to run your insurance before you get treated. We need to verify that you are covered." I say "No problem!" The receptionist then gets MetLife on the phone for me to speak with. I get the right member ID number and group number. Once she has the numbers, she personally calls MetLife to verify and tells me everything is good to go. I get x-rayed. The dentist find two cavities. She suggests doing fillings and a laser cleaning, but for a remarkably large sum. All of this sounds like a lot to me but I agree to her doing one side first to see how it goes. Good thing I only did the one side because the dentist drilled SO DEEP and for so long and the lidocaine was not working on a tooth that honestly SHOULD NOT HAVE NEEDED A FILLING TO BEGIN WITH given how small the original cavity was. I was so traumatized I couldn't go back. Fast forward to now. I need a cleaning. I am still a student. I decide to find a different dentist and call Berkeley Dental Center to transfer my x-rays. The receptionist tells me I have an outstanding balance of almost $300! "We anticipated your insurance would cover more than they agreed to on these two procedures we did on you," she says. I ask, "Is that not between you and the insurance company then? You assured me they would cover it." She then says "Well actually WE DO NOT TAKE METLIFE INSURANCE. The part we told you would be covered by them is on you" I'm sorry but HOW IS IT POSSIBLE YOU DO NOT TAKE METLIFE INSURANCE??? How is it possible when I called to verify you took my insurance before the appointment? How is it possible when DURING THE APPOINTMENT you had me and the receptionist on the phone with MetLife to verify my insurance details so you could proceed with the treatments? This does not add up and frankly seems ILLEGAL. I had already paid a good amount out of my own pocket for treatments that have now been deemed unnecessary to begin with, I am in more pain than I was prior to treatment and now Berkeley Dental Center tells me what they THOUGHT insurance would cover is not covered and that they NEVER TOOK MY INSURANCE TO BEGIN WITH?!?!! I have been swindled. MORAL OF THE STORY and a message to all of Berkeley: do not go to this office!! They will take advantage of you (especially if you are young and seemingly naive of the inner-workings of the healthcare ecosystem) and mislead you so they can do needless, painful, and expensive procedures in an effort to increase their profits. read more

I'm not sure what all of the negative reviews are about. I needed immediate attention to a dental issue. From the moment I called the office, the staff I dealt with were professional. They made sure to schedule me in as soon as they could. When I arrived for my appointment everyone in the office was extremely nice and professional. The dentist explained everything and made sure I was comfortable with the procedure. His bedside manor could not have been more comforting. Great experience here. read more

With a rotating staff of dentists and a very irritating reminder call which includes a message that any cancelled appointments must be made 2 weeks early or a fee for a late cancellation will be charged, I'm looking for another dental practice!( the hygienist, Tennille is great!) At least one of the 4 dentists to which I was assigned was very heavy handed (she has left the group). The others were fair. Two have not worked on my mouth. read more

Had my first dental visit at this location yesterday. Eva at the front desk was quick and efficient in ensuring i had a smooth check-in. They are following all the proper protocols to check patient temperature upon arrival as well as using proper PPE's and sterilizing the patient treatment area between patient treatments. Dr Chowdhary and her assistant Edna were very gentle with me during my teeth cleaning. Marvelous views of berkeley hills from the office. Will definitely come back again. read more

The dentist and hygienists were friendly and professional enough, however, the office was extremely poorly managed. Not only were they disorganized and over an hour late but she also quoted me around $600 for the fillings and then afterward charged me close to $1000. I asked what happened and she said she accidentally (oops!) quoted me the children's price. Unless you want surprise bills like this, I would stay away. read more

tl;dr Good cleaning with newer equipment BUT they will try to charge you the uninsured price if you don't pay attention. Beware if they say they take your insurance. They are a premium provider for me and will charge you more than what your insurance will cover. Make sure to ask are you a "Delta Dental PPO provider?". I've gone here since 2016 when I first purchased a Groupon for a comprehensive dental exam with a cleaning and a 6 month follow up exam and cleaning. While the cleaning is thorough and they use newer tools, the dentist was really pushy when he found 3 cavities. When I said I didn't have insurance, he offered a student discount even though I wasn't a student or recent graduate. The total charge was quoted around $680 or so. The second time I went, I was only given a cleaning, no exam. I didn't push it and just left. Fast forward over a year later and I got Delta Dental. I decide to go back to Berkeley Dental Center because they said they take my insurance. The 2 min exam that followed was mostly the dentist saying "oh I see we found 3 cavities last time, yep they're still there". I scheduled the appointment for the fillings under the assumption that this is covered by my insurance and that I wasn't charged for the cleaning and exam. I paid my estimated portion of the costs after insurance. Lo and behold a month later I get a bill for an additional couple hundred dollars. I double checked my insurance account and they did not claim the fillings like the bill said they did. After reaching out to them about the discrepancy, it came down to like 20 bucks. They did the same thing to a person I referred. read more

My experience has been similar to that of other one-star reviews. It's disappointing but not surprising that this has happened to others. I made an appointment early this year. I was immediately concerned when the office really pushed for a deep cleaning. This is not the first office that misrepresents information to push for this procedure, but I usually simply decline it and move on (my research in graduate school involved periodontal health, so I know how often certain unnecessary procedures are offered). I told the office that I would opt for a regular cleaning and other services. The office staff told me that they couldn't do that, claiming that the insurance wouldn't cover anything else because what would be the point of doing so if "my teeth would fall off" for declining a deep cleaning. They wouldn't vouch, and declined to schedule me for another visit for that reason. I told them I would call the insurance myself, which I did minutes after, and was told exactly what I knew and had stated: they would cover the other procedures and would never require this procedure before other care. I came back to the office to let them know, and the staff wasn't friendly about it. I should have left at this time, because frankly I didn't really trust them, but the dentist had been very nice (as opposed to the office staff) so I decided to give them one more chance. I came back a few weeks later. I felt pain despite getting two cartridges of anesthesia, which has never happened before. When paying, the amount didn't match what I knew my insurance covered. The billing person said she had no idea why there was a discrepancy and that I just needed to pay. I paid (it was just ~$100 over my expected payment). A few weeks later when I received my insurance statement, it was clear that I was owed a return. I knew I wouldn't be going back, so I called to request it. I was told that the insurance hadn't paid, so a few weeks later I called the insurance to make sure payment had been issued. The insurance took this as a complaint and reached out to the clinic, which readily called me and said I would be "deposited directly" by the end of the week. The refund was never issued. While the amount is luckily low enough to just be an inconvenience, the response and attitude of the office staff was truly upsetting. I'll go ahead and request an indirect refund from the insurance, so I ask the staff not to reach out. read more

As a full grown adult, I am humbled to admit that I was a "fearful patient." All of that is now in the past since I became a client of Berkeley Dental. The staff is so friendly and supportive! I have been a patient here since 2004, when Dr. Tennant was my dentist. He was the BEST dentist on the planet. Caring, professional, patient, just an angel of a dentist. Since his retirement I have had a non ending rotation of mediocre dentists that couldn't give less of a shit about my dental well being. I spend exactly three -five minutes with them at my two annual cleanings. The only reason I stay is because of my wonderful dental hygienist, Tenneal. I love her. She is patient and gentle and I am not ready to leave her. Once she leaves the practice, I'll either follow her to her new dentist or make the dreaded search for another dentist. read more

Professional, modern and very efficient. Least painless dentist experience I've ever had.

What has happened to this practice?!? The dental staff has been a rotating cast, a different one almost every time I've gone, before and after lockdown. The courteous, efficient front office staff is gone, replaced by individuals with no customer-relations skills who make one error after another in scheduling and record keeping -- and aren't always masked properly. Luckily, Lupie, the dental assistant, and Tenneal, the hygienist, are still there, and Dr. Loul tries to compensate for the weaknesses in the practice, but it's an uphill fight. It doesn't help that the professionals are overbooked. The hours on the website are not up to date, and the "Our Team" section is useless. No photos or bios are posted -- probably because the dental staff has had such turnover -- and some entries do not even have full names. After 18 years with this practice, I'm looking for a new one. read more

Just WOW this has got to be my favorite dental center ever . Dr. Adriane Holland was so nice and made me feel comfortable when i was in a little pain, she also explained everything so i could understand the process of everything and why things happen in our teeth. I had a great appointment. I hadn't been to the dentist in about a year so I had a lot of items to deal with. The dentist explained everything they were doing, made sure I felt comfortable with which items they were handling, and also made sure that I was comfortable from a pain perspective. I'd highly recommend them and have suggested my wife go to here as well. read more

Excellent service and staff. Dr. Chowdhary is so kind, amiable, and professional. I like most their transparency about costs and open discussion as to what insurance covers vs what you'll be responsible for. Previously, went to a dentist that was not clear about being out of network and therefore having lower reimbursement from insurance, costing me an outrageous sum for the work I needed. As 33 year old woman I've never had better service from a dental group. The staff is beyond friendly from the moment you walk in. All the ladies that have taken care of my teeth, whether it be from a basic cleaning, to my first crown installation have been gentle, informative, and handled my teeth and gums with exceptional care. Mrs. Adrienne gave me an amazing teeth cleaning and a lesson in flossing (who knew I was doing it wrong the whole time and apparently I'm not alone!) and Dr. Anshuja Chowdhary put my first and only temporary turned permanent crown in with ease. She answered all my questions and even let me watch the installation. They also offer PDP in house insurance for a very reasonable price for anyone who doesn't have dental coverage. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a new dental group. read more

Berkeley Dental Center Is fantastic! My dental hygienist, Adrie, is top notch. The office has taken exhaustive measure to sterilize their facilities before and after patients. 20 minute deep cleans. Upon entering the office, my temperature was taken and a questionnaire administered. Everyone had a mask. Dental hygienist had multiple mask coverings and face guard on. read more

I was here a few months ago and this review is long overdue. So first, the pros: dental cleaning was great. I do not recall the name of the tall white lady that did my cleaning, but she was friendly, gentle and thorough. If you are looking for a place for routine cleanings, I think this office would be quite suitable (aside from the annoying parking situation--expect to pay $ or walk far) Cons: My PERMANENT dental filling fell out 2X !! I did not eat anything hard or sticky--actually i barely even chewed on the side the work was done. And yet, the filling came out. So yes, I had to slog through traffic and come back to the office not once, but TWICE, due to their lack of know-how. Yes, yes, they claim "Oh this has never happened before!" But really, the professional thing for them to have done would have been to offer a partial refund. Not just look surprised and only mildly apologetic for the inconvenience they caused me. Did i mention this happened TWICE? Have i had worse dental experiences in my life? Yup. But I've also had a lot better. read more
