I'm embarrassed that I don't know how to spell her name, but Naia, Niya, the person who runs the front desk, she's the most calming person on the planet sometimes. I have really bad anxiety. And my shrink has a real sense of humor telling me to get a dog for it. I've been in this ER for some real shit, but also some just me being anxious shit. No matter what it is, she's never dismissive. She's never condescending. I'm always relieved to see her face. My dog is also obsessed with her. Everyone else here is great too. Also, the nurses are great. The one tonight gave me pee pee pads because my very high dog is leaving a trail. They've been very useful as my entire apartment smells like pee, but that can all be mopped up off the floor and thankfully thrown away off the couch and bed.

I need to warn other pet owners about what happened to my dog Milo at Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital. It was such a distressing and unethical experience that no one else should have to go through it. On October 10, 2025, my mom and I brought our 7-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, Milo, for a simple fox-tail check because his paw was red and irritated. We were seen by Dr. Kassidy Leon, who immediately insisted on doing a "blind exploratory surgery", cutting his paw open without first recommending an ultrasound or any non-invasive test. Had we known an ultrasound was an option, we never would have agreed to surgery. After the procedure, Dr. Leon said she didn't find anything but sent Milo home bloody, swollen, and in pain, with no antibiotics, no pain meds, and barely any after-care instructions. Within hours, his paw was oozing pus and he was crying from pain. I had to rush him back the next day just to get ointment, and even then, no one took responsibility. A few days later, on October 14, we saw Dr. Tong for an ultrasound, the very test that should have been done first. Dr. Tong found the fox-tail that Dr. Leon had missed during her surgery. This confirmed what I feared: the surgery was completely unnecessary and caused Milo's infection and suffering. To make matters worse, one of the technicians (Jen) yelled at me in front of the entire lobby that same day, calling me "aggressive". Her tone was hostile and unprofessional, I was honestly scared to leave my dog there after that. By this point, Milo's paw was worse than before we came in. He was limping, bleeding, and terrified. We spent over thousands of dollars at this hospital, and it feels like all they cared about was charging for procedures, not helping our dog heal. I have since filed a formal complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board and am sharing this review so other pet parents don't go through what we did. Please, if your vet here recommends surgery without offering other options first, get a second opinion. You and your pet deserve transparency, compassion, and ethical care. Our dogs can't speak for themselves, but we can.

I can only say good things about my first time to this clinic. The staff were incredibly attentive, informative and empathetic. They took my dog immediately to the back, kept me updated and informed. They went above and beyond the initial reason why I brought my dog in and addressed a second less urgent issue. The gal at the front desk gave me a LOT of support. Explaining to me that things happen fast sometimes and not to blame myself for my dogs condition. ( I researched it myself later and realized she was right ) But she eased my guilt a great deal in the moment. They even gave my pup some supplemental IV support because she is a mature lady. Since thank you for helping me so much at 1am

I've cried everyday for a week. I don't know if the pain of losing my best friend will ever go away. But exactly a week ago my cat I've had ever since I moved to the Eastbay had reached total Kidney Failure. He looked and felt miserable and he could no longer eat or walk. My wife and I called every doctor that does euthanasia home calls, my veterinarian, as well as every possible pet hospital because it pained us to see him suffer. Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital was the only place that said they could have a room available to provide the euthanasia. They sedated him and gave us our last moments with him. Even though it felt like talking to Khal Drogo/Jason Momoa in the Game of Thrones right before he died...I said goodbye and told him I loved him and that he was the best kitty. We then rang a bell and the procedure took seconds. The total for sedation, euthanasia, and communal cremation was $507. A little pricey I think, but who cares when all I think about is losing my best friend, and that I would pay anything to have him back. I received a card from the Doctor today which is thoughtful. So I appreciate and thank Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital for being there when I needed them because the one thing that makes me feel better is the fact that he is no longer suffering now.

They were so kind, as we said goodbye to our tiny boy that we had bottle fed and raised from birth. The in house diagnostics are great. We didn't have to wait long at all for the test results. The 2nd time, we brought in our elderly girl. She was 16. When her vet turned us away when we came to tell them we were coming in (they told us "maybe tomorrow"), we headed here. She'd been sick a while, we knew it was coming. Of course, that didn't make it any easier. The staff here was absolutely wonderful. As soon as we walked in, they took us out of the lobby so we wouldn't have to sit with all the happy/healthy animals. They didn't question us, they saw her and told us we were making the right choice. They brought her a soft cat bed to lay in. They gave us all the time we needed to hold her and love her, until we were ready. No pressure. Then they allowed my 16 year old daughter to hold her beloved girl until she was gone. We were allowed more time with her. Then they gave us each a vile of her beautiful fur. We weren't rushed. We did everything on our terms/time. And our girl left this world surrounded in love. I would 100% recommend PETS Referral Center. I hope we never have to go back. But, we would of we had too.

My issue is with Dr.Kim Shaffer in Oncology at their specialty building. I was referred by my cat's doctor. As soon as she walked in the room I noticed that her demeanor seemed like she was irritated. Right off the bat She would barely let me get a word in trying to explain my Cat's complex situation before continually cutting me off. She even scolded me saying I needed to stop living in the past while I was trying to explain a timeline of how my cat's health had progressed to where we're at now. When I would ask about things to try and help my cat I was met with such hostility. I asked about cancer medication, she said none of them work. She told me there was nothing that could be done even though we don't have a definitive diagnosis that this is Cancer. I asked about palliative care as my cat's vet suggested she should be on reassuring me that Dr Shaffer would surely do that for us even sending over notes to Dr.Shaffer reiterating that. Well Dr Shaffer said she wasn't going to do any of that but would maybe only give her pain meds for me to take home to give by mouth when I told her it was hard to give by mouth since that's where the tumor is she acted like it wasn't her problem. I asked if she could give her an injection for pain instead which she's had in the past and she said No that wouldn't work, and that I should probably then euthanize my cat. I said she's still running around playing and eating and she snapped at me and said she's not eating! She's lost weight so she's not eating, insinuating that I'm lying to her. Everytime I turned around I was met with resistance in such a disrespectful manner and tone so I finally said to her why are you speaking to me so rudely i'm just just trying to help my cat by asking questions and why do you have such a lack of bedside manner towards me right now? I told her I was shocked by her behavior. what had I done to her to make her have this attitude towards me the minute she walked in the room and she said you just don't want to accept what I have to say which was not the case at all, I know that we're in a dire situation. It was her lack of Empathy and unwillingness to even give an inch to help my pet in any capacity while also being combative towards me, that was the problem. As a last effort I asked if we could at least run some bloodwork while we're there so I could get an idea of what my cats numbers looked like so I could make more informed decisions and she again said No! Bloodwork won't show anything. At that point I was so frustrated and I said this has been a complete waste of time and your refusal to help us with anything is unbelievable to me and then she said we're done here and I said yes we are and I said why would you waste our time if you're not even willing to do the bare minimum to help us navigate this. She then said I'm not going to take this verbal abuse and told me to leave the building! I've never been kicked out of anywhere in my 55 years on this earth. I said I'm just trying to be an advocate for my cat and I'm trying to understand why I'm being met with such hostility every step of the way and she then said I'm not giving your cat any pain medication now you'll have to go find it somewhere else. I mean, that is so INHUMANE to take it out on a helpless animal who's been waiting for this appointment for so long and not to mention UNETHICAL!!!! if you knew you weren't going to help us at all with even palliative care, then why would you even have us come in? She had all of our records weeks ahead of time to call us and let us know that. I had to sedate my cat and withhold food for 10 hours for nothing. I am still in shock over all of this as I'm sitting here watching my cat in pain. I've never had a doctor treat me like this and then act as if I'm the problem. I guess expressing discontent about the way someone is treating you constitutes as verbal abuse to her? So now my cat is still suffering and we have to try and find another Oncologist which is going to take so long. I'm just so disheartened. I've seen another oncologist here two years ago for one of our other cats that was given two months to live, and that Doctor was so helpful at making him as comfortable as possible giving us pain meds, anti-inflammatories, appetite stimulants, steroids, breathing treatments you name it and my cat actually lived another six months! That kind of caring made all the difference in the world. Unfortunately that doctor no longer works here. To treat someone the way this Doctor has treated me and to withhold treatment from my cat when we're at our lowest point right now with trying to navigate this difficult time is incomprehensible and completely Unacceptable.

I felt very comfortable here, and I think my cat, despite it being a new environment, felt relatively at ease as well. They're very transparent about pricing and never pressured me into getting any specific tests. They answered all my questions clearly and made sure I understood everything. The clinic gives out free treats for both cats and dogs, which was a nice touch. Their prices do lean a little on the higher side compared to some other clinics I looked at nearby but they provided close estimates over the phone beforehand. They offer basic blood/urine work and have an in-house pharmacy for some medications. They also do basic bladder ultrasounds, but for more advanced imaging, they refer out to other nearby clinics they trust. Overall, I highly recommend this clinic. The level of care and professionalism is excellent, and Dr. Schaffer especially was wonderful with my cat.

We know this only because we went to other vets and we were able to get what our dogs need and not be overcharged for things that they didn't. We recently went to visit El Cerrito veterinary care for a few regular procedures that our dog needed to get done. These procedures were done in the past without sedation, using a muzzle. To our surprise, we were told that the doctor recently made a note to sedate our dog for any further procedures. Our dog has not been sedated for any of these minor procedure in the past. This is an additional charge that we did not want to pay for because it did not make sense. We have been bringing our dog in for the same exact procedure for 3 years now, and a muzzle was always used. Unfortunately, we're noticing that they take advantage of the fact that people would pay anything to take care of their dogs and throw in additional charges. We were quoted $150 before went in for the appointment, and when we got there, we were told that with the sedation we would be paying close to $500. This meant that anytime we came in to bring our dog we would have to be paying close to that amount. When in the past, we would pay no more than 150 for the same exact procedure. Please be careful with this vet. They completely take advantage and for that reason we're no longer going there.
