University Veterinary Hospital in West Berkeley is a fantastic clinic with a really nice, clean, and well-organized facility. They have a small parking lot, but there's usually decent street parking nearby. They're open Monday through Saturday by appointment only. I saw Dr. Schaffer for my cat Sophie and she was amazing. She was incredibly thorough, compassionate, and clearly very good with animals. The entire staff was great--professional, friendly, and attentive. I felt very comfortable here, and I think my cat, despite it being a new environment, felt relatively at ease as well. They're very transparent about pricing and never pressured me into getting any specific tests. They answered all my questions clearly and made sure I understood everything. The clinic gives out free treats for both cats and dogs, which was a nice touch. Their prices do lean a little on the higher side compared to some other clinics I looked at nearby but they provided close estimates over the phone beforehand. They offer basic blood/urine work and have an in-house pharmacy for some medications. They also do basic bladder ultrasounds, but for more advanced imaging, they refer out to other nearby clinics they trust. Overall, I highly recommend this clinic. The level of care and professionalism is excellent, and Dr. Schaffer especially was wonderful with my cat. read more

We've been coming to University Vet for years ever since we adopted our furry kids, but unfortunately, the quality of care has gone downhill. There were a couple knowledgeable and pleasant vets we enjoyed working with, but it is telling that they have all since departed. Over time, prices have significantly increased, and we noticed that they have been recommending expensive, unnecessary tests and scans. Despite these measures, they've struggled to properly treat our pets, leaving us frustrated and concerned for their well-being. The staff has also become increasingly passive-aggressive during visits, which makes the entire experience stressful for both us and our pets. Not only was Dr. Lam weirdly accusatory when I last visited about med purchase (I opted to buy a non-emergency ointment elsewhere as University Vet charges double the price), the visit ended up much longer than it needed to be as the staff were not providing the necessary attention. At one point during the visit, I waited for more than 15 mins after the doctor left without a single person checking in; and when I went out to the hallway to ask for help, no one was there and I could hear staff chatting and laughing in the back room. They made my sick pet and I wait even longer when she was taken to receive an x-ray, alleging delay from other procedures. To top it off, their communication is lacking--they failed to respond to insurance requests in a timely manner, forcing us to follow up multiple times. It's astonishing to receive a $1,000+ bill for a simple check up, and based on the above, we no longer feel confident in bringing our pets here. read more

Not sure if it was the departure of Dr. Mattu or them getting bought out by a private equity syndicate, but this place has turned into the most unprofessional place. I brought my dog in for a recurring lump that Dr. Mattu had aspirated in the past. Now it had grown back and looked infected. Maybe a surgery is necessary, I was told. But the person who does surgery doesn't come everyday. They'd reach out to him/her and get back to me. Three days later nothing, five days late nothing. I call THEM and they say they will talk to the vet and get back to me by end of business day. Nope. Over ten days later they then tell me I have to give a $150 deposit to even SEE the surgeon (because there will be blood tests). "How does two weeks from today sound?" "How does emailing me ALL my pet's records sound?" I will never go there again. read more

I've been taking my pet to UVH for the last couple of years. Dr Schaffer has been great. We always knew that UVH was more expensive than other vets in the area but gladly paid because of the higher level of care. Unfortunately several weeks ago we requested a prescription refill for my dog. I was told by the person at the front desk it would take 24-48 hours to fill which was ok. I was also told that Dr. Schaffer was out but another vet would fill it. I followed up after a day then 2 days but the prescription was not filled. On the second day I called again (about 50 hours later - stressing the time as the front desk receptionist kept mentioning their 24-48 hour policy) mentioning that I needed it by end of day as my dog was going to his boarding facility and I would be out of town. I also mentioned that if it was faster, I could pick it up from UVH directly instead of Costco. Suddenly the receptionist said it was ready but when I went to pick it up, she gave me the literal prescription paper instead of the medicine. I found the receptionist to be rude as she blamed me for the misunderstanding and when I asked someone to fill it as I had to drop my dog off to boarding, she said it would take 24 hours to fill. I'm not sure what good quoting timeframes is when they can't stick to them. I would have expected better customer service for someone who has spent thousands of dollars at their practice instead of being blamed for the misunderstanding. I also was quoted over $2500 for a dental cleaning which my dogs old vet in the south bay did for $1200 recently. read more

We just finished our 1st wellness appointment with Dr. Dana Schaffer and she is WONDERFUL! We adopted our cat from the Berkeley Humane Society and we think she had a lot of trauma--she's older with some medical issues, very shy, skittish, scared, and likes dark corners. Dr. Schaffer was patient, understanding, and even playful with our cat. She took the time to listen to our concerns and clearly explained what each procedure was, what our cat may need in the future, and how much each item will likely cost. We really appreciated her patience, individualized care, and how genuine she was. We will definitely return for any follow up care needed and we will make sure to work with Dr. Schaffer again. A+++ Also, the front desk staff was very informative and respectful. I just spent $230 for general checkup of my 17-1/2 yo cat. I brought him in July to another vet, who said the itching and scratching wasn't due to fleas (after only a cursory combing), no scabbing, etc. I just brought him in, vet decided it wasn't fleas but likely food. Thanks. Now I need help. Allegedly University Pet Hospital has a dermatology Dept., but they wanted $100 bucks at appointment time for yet ANOTHER cursory exam, and said they didn't have any dermatology experts (and yet they advertise a dermatology dept.) I walked out. I'm not going to waste yet another $100+ without getting any help for my poor scritchy cat. At least the $230 from the previous one gave me some prednisone for me to give him. read more

I just want to post this update. I've been going to UVH for 10 years. Dr. Mattu and Dr. Fosbender have always been wonderful. For those of you who don't know, the hospital was sold to a private equity firm during Covid. Dr. Mattu has left and moved to SoCal. The vets aren't happy-- they're being forced to decrease time w/ patients and upcharge. This is the future of vet care and it sucks for all of us-- the vets who don't want to practice this way, and pet owners, who want to do best by their animals. read more

University Vet just charged $500 to get a health certificate to bring our dog to Hawaii ($400 for the certificate and $100 for the visit). This does not include the $472 we already paid for the Rabies-FAVN test required by Hawaii, nor the cost of Rabies vaccines or tick treatments, nor the fee we pay directly to Animal Quarantine in Hawaii. The certificate is just a document attesting to the dog's health and Rabies vaccines, signed by a vet, and presented by the owner to officials in Hawaii when you land. This document probably took vet admin staff 10 minutes to generate, and took the vet a second to sign. It feels like a complete racket and shakedown because they know by the time you make it to this point, you've already invested so much to get your pet to the destination and the trip is occurring so soon (health certificate must be done within 14 days of travel) that you're not going to change your plans so late in the game. I feel really taken advantage of with this. Hope to find somewhere else to take my pet in the future. read more

Dr. Mattu COMPLETELY MISSED OUR CAT'S TERMINAL ILLNESS, then told us by email, with no explanation, just a link to the disease and a note to buy prescription food (but no prescription to go with it, presumably to make it more likely I'd have to buy it from them), when the mistake became clear. In the same trip I was told FACTUALLY INCORRECT MEDICAL INFORMATION by a vet tech, and pressured to pay for higher-priced treatment that was not medically better than the alternative. I can't tell you how sad I am to write this review, but maybe at least someone else can be saved the heartbreak and stress. If you're reading this, do not go here. Really, truly, you need a doc for your pet who is competent, paying attention, and actually cares. Go anywhere else. I brought my senior cat in with a history including weight loss, and a few other symptoms. Without addressing the history I had given to the tech, Mattu told me it was allergies and that my cat would need to be on a lifelong steroid, but that first he would give an antibiotic just in case. (Surprisingly, the lifelong steroid off-the-cuff Rx push is far from the worst thing that happened.) He pushed repeatedly for me to take the brand-name vaccine antibiotics even though I was very clear that I wanted the generic pill (this vax is potentially more profitable for Mattu, but worse for my cat since it means he has to go through the stress of going to the vet an extra time to get the follow up.) At the end of the appointment, he tried to upsell me on getting a blood panel & urinalysis which he described as not necessary but good to have a point-in-time benchmark. The panel offered was ~$500 (this is higher than other vets in the area for the same - I have never been to this vet that they have not tried to get me to pay for a panel). When I agreed to it, he seemed surprised. Honestly, I agreed to it because I suspected there was something actually wrong with my cat, and allergies did not make sense with the complete history. They ran the blood panel but did not do the urine test. When they told me at the front desk that they had only run part of the tests, I asked whether the tests that would be missing without the urinalysis included kidney function tests. The tech said no. I asked if they were sure and they went in the back (presumably to look it up?) and came back out and assured me that the test had nothing to do with kidneys, that it was a test for "protein" not kidney function. The thing you need to know as someone considering this vet is that a urine protein test is a key test for kidney failure staging in cats. Chronic kidney failure is extremely common in senior cats (something like a third of cats over a certain age get it). Not only did this place not think it was necessary to test my cat's kidney function (I'm unclear how it did not occur to Mattu that this might have been the issue, my cat's presented history was not complex, weight loss, bad breath, mouth ulcers - I guess I'm glad he wanted to upsell me on that panel anyway), they literally did not know what a completely routine test was for. Not only that, they gave me factually incorrect information, assuring me multiple times that urinalysis is not a kidney function test. Not only that, but when his blood tests came in and they realized they had COMPLETELY MISSED MY CAT'S TERMINAL ILLNESS, Mattu had the gall to email me a "Whoops - Bring your cat back in for that urinalysis" message (spelled my pet's name wrong and everything) and tell me to buy food from them. He failed to address the antibiotic that he prescribed (safe dosing is often different in CKD cats) at all, so for all he cares, my cat is still taking the mountain of antibiotics he sent me home with even though he no longer knows if the dose he prescribed based solely on weight is actually safe. Really a nightmare. When my grief about my cat is a little less, I'll try and come back and add a section on when my dog broke his foot and this vet totally missed that. Another nightmare. I don't know how many thousands of dollars I have spent here, but I do know my pets have never gotten the care they really needed. read more

We like Dr Mattu for our little Yorkie. There is something up with the front desk staff as other reviews indicate. I understand that they are busy, but one (maybe more) of them gets overly frazzled/does not handle it well and acts out. What's more important: the latter or the former? Terrrible vet experience. Started off arriving early for my appt. Than I was told to wait outside. My 3lb Yorkie was shivering outside in the cold while only two ladies sat at front desk. My Yorkie was scheduled to get his stitches taken out because he almost lost his eyes a few weeks back. Than the doctor told us that the would remove the stitches and do extra test to see if his eye was salvageable. Mind you these "test" they did were not cheap. 15mins later they gave me back my dog and left one stitch holding his eye shut. They told me to go to the Pet ER because they where afraid his eye might pop out I told them all the test they did where unnecessary if they where just going to send me to the ER. They still made me pay for the test. The staff there where completely inconsiderate and cold. I totally don't recommend this place at all. I understand some of this may be due to covid, but everything just felt so cold and impersonal here, from booking the appointment and communications beforehand to lack of follow-up after my dog's visit. From the email, I was prepared to stay in the car - nerve-wracking as hell as that was! - while a staff member walked my dog in for her exam. We showed up on time, and it was strange, but whoever answered the phone (on the third call) sounded like we were unexpected even though I had an appointment, and it took another five minutes before someone came out to get my dog. To me, the most off-putting thing about the visit was that I had prepared a list down to the ingredients and amounts of each in her diet and folder of as many medical documents as I could gather, and the staff member waved it off and didn't take anything when he came out to get my dog. That was actually... concerning to me? Wouldn't - shouldn't the vet and any vet techs trying to figure out what is wrong with my dog take all the information they can get, especially since I can't be inside to answer any questions? I was fairly sure that it was a UTI, but since I'm not the professional and it could be any number of things, I was still worried or that there could be other issues they would find with my dog apart from the suspected UTI. I paid about $90 for them to confirm that it was indeed a UTI and marked-up antibiotics for her that I later found for half the price online. They didn't tell me anything else was wrong, but I'm not sure what else they would have done in a general exam. I just know they were trying to charge me hundreds more for a follow-up exam and tests. I know that it may seem like a "simple" UTI, but previous vets I have had for my other dog have always had their office do a courtesy call to check a week later or however long meds are prescribed for to see how the pet is doing. I went to see a new vet with Isadora Duncan, my 15-year-old cat. She's been having improper elimination issues (enough said). Dr. Landman was understanding, flexible, considerate, and helpful, and understood Isadora's and my perhaps divergent wishes and needs. The few times we've been to see the vet during my cats' lives were at Albany VCA--very competent but kind of a struggle to deal with due to their popularity. University Vet is much less busy and for this visit at least I found Dr. Landman thoughtful and competent. Josey, the receptionist, is businesslike, and like many people at the point of an operation, considerate after engaging with her. Pet nurse Natasha was friendly and helpful. Waited for an hour to be seen by the vet even after making an appointment. My dog has been there before and was panting the entire time we were waiting. After patiently asking for an hour, I checked with receptionist just to see how long I need to wait more as I had plans after. They say the doctor will not provide estimate. I asked receptionist to check again because I felt like that's the least she could do when a client waited for an hour after making an appointment. The doctor refused to provide estimated time again. I understand unusual circumstances happen especially when it comes to health care related jobs. HORRIBLY RUDE! LOOK AT THE OTHER REVIEWS, THEIR FRONT DESK STAFF IS RUINING THEIR BUSINESS! I called to set up an appointment about a foxtail lodged in my dog's nose. I literally didn't have enough enough money to rush to emergency or have surgery but wanted to see if there was a cheaper alternative that could help save my dog's life. The receptionist Kriste/in made me feel bad for it, kept interrupting me and then RAISED HER VOICE "Do I want the sooner appt or not?!" (Verbatim). I had specially asked for an appt after my next pay date. Not once did she offer dates around that because she instigated on ignoring me despite me making it very clear I was upset with her. I complained to management and they said she would be spoken to and they were surprised by this. Well, I made the appt. later because I was desperate and the vet was nice so I thought I'll give them another shot because lucky me, my dog now has a suspicious lump on her head. Called for cytology and biopsy baseline price so I don't WASTE an exam fee when I'm already broke from all of this grief etc. as it is. Receptionist answers and it sounds like the same joke of an employee. I ask her and she declines to tell me stating they don't have access to pricing. Really? Funny, every other vet in every city I've lived in who I've spoken to INCLUDING Jessica from University Hospital gave me prices, even estimates. Get off your lazy, incompetent, and arrogant butt and ask the vet to follow up when they can. I was hesitant to take my dog here because of all the weird reviews (and my own anxiety) but any time I've had to interact with anyone here they've been professional, caring, and thoughtful, which makes me feel like some of these reviews are from people who are getting back the same energy they're putting out there. My dog had such a good time here he pulls on his leash to go inside when we pass by on our walks. I originally posted a negative review, but want to add now that our experience was so much better after we went back and saw a different doctor. Luck-key is already healing and walking normally after Dr. Schaeffer removed a foxtail from his paw. The original doctor we saw did nothing to help lucky but Dr. Schaefer made all the difference. She was careful, persistent, and determined to get the foxtail out with minimal pain. I'm so glad we went back and that I trusted Dr. Schaeffer. What a relief! read more

If you love your pet, don't take them here. I have been using them for many years and never have gotten a consistent doctor. This tells me the turnover is high, which is a red flag. They prey off the fact that you love your pet, and recommend expensive treatments that are not necessary. Speaking of expensive: this place is highly overpriced. I will say it's been tolerable for many years until we started seeing Dr. Shaffer. She blocked my dog from getting home oxygen for her tracheal collapse. Stating I should go to the ED. Now does this make sense? Purchasing (out of my own pocket) when it was only a preventative measure to ensure I wouldn't have to go to the very expensive pet ED. I continue to bring my cats to UVH for quality care over the past two years. Dr. Schaffer, Dr. Landman, Dr. Fosbender, and the entire team are professional, friendly, thorough, and exceptional. I've never had any trouble at all finding an appointment or calling in for advice from the wonderful staff, especially Josie and Natasha. UVH's care recommendations got my new kitten through an unfortunate spay-related health problem (residual from the foster, not by UVH), and into exuberant-kitten happiness. Dental cleaning for my older cat was a breeze with quality care from Holly. Pricing is reasonable and I have full confidence in the care my cats receive. read more

I wanted to have a family doctor for my cat. I started my journey with UVH almost over a year ago. It was good with Dr. Thomas McBride. I believe he might have left the hospital but we were reassigned with Dr. Mattu. This was where things have gotten downhill. Dr. Mattu has lost our trust with the hospital. As we were attempting to get a refill for our cat's medication (he has a heart condition). He has mentioned that the refill would be approved after the visit without further diagnosis and testing. After attempting to purchase the refill again, we were denied because Dr. Mattu has decided to do further testing after we have left the office. I would have understood if it was required to do further testing on the day of. But the stress, that he has introduced to my cat and myself has left a poor impression on himself and the hospital. We have decided to move on to another hospital as Dr. Mattu has lost trust with us as clients. And has jeopardized my cat's life. Please do not send your pets here to their funeral. If you are a vet, please love your job and save an animals' life or please do something else. Very sad. My cat is dying. Very sad. read more

I have taken my dog there since I moved to Berkeley in 2018 and I don't know what has happened but the staff in general is rude and unlikely to help. We took our Beagle in for an ear infection and she was prescribed a ear wash that didn't work and prior to that we had been prescribed something that did work so we called and asked for that one. Mind you it was only a few days. The lady on the phone basically said since we didn't buy it from them while we were there she could not give the name of the medication to order it threw Chewy. Now the dogs ears are bleeding and the receptionist refuses to put in a STAT request. This place is on the decline very quickly. I DO NOT Recommend this place to anyone who cares about their pet. Whoever is in charge of the front office staff either needs more training or another profession. read more

My Location: Santa Clara Tl;dr: Incompetent people work here. There are good people here too but you will mainly interact with incompetent people. I called to schedule a Root Canal Consultation for my feline fur baby on January 13th after I was informed by her primary vet that her options for her chipped tooth are: root canal or extraction. I called all over the bay area EMPHASIZING that I needed to schedule a root canal consult for her. This clinic offered the earliest time slot of today, February 17th, with them fully aware I need to schedule a root canal consult. Two days prior to the appointment, I called the clinic to confirm the appointment time is booked for the specific time and type of appointment discusses 1 month ago. It was confirmed. On the day of the appointment, I used PTO to ensure that my fur baby would get to her appointment on time. I sat in traffic for at least 1.5 hours to be informed by a nurse that the root canal consult is not offered?! The star itself is for the nurse that has remained calm, while I was frustrated at how I had wasted my time driving to a useless appointment, and Dr. Landman, who had called me personally, otherwise this place would deserve 0 stars. Apparently from what I was informed, the person that had initially made the appointment is a manager and that speaks volumes. What a wonderful experience at the University Veterinary Hospital. We have a seven year old Orange Tabby, who came with the name Boots, that we were lucky enough to adopt from the Berkeley Animal Care Services (who are also great) last year. This was his first check up, and we were so lucky to get a referral from a friend about Dr. Dana Schaffer and UVH. Dr. Schaffer is the best Veterinarian we have ever seen, and we have had good Vets with many animals over the years. She made an anxious visit with a new pet a pleasant one. The other Staff were fantastic. From start to finish: making the appointment, reminders, check in, Dr. Schaffer's consultation, which was more thorough than most human Med. appointments, shots, and even helping us with a carry case. And then, a follow up email of the whole visit. We are so happy about this place. You will be too!!! read more

I came in for a periodontal cleaning with an estimate of $2000 - $3500 and when my wife came pick our dog up, they charged me $4780!! I would approach this vet with reluctance. They provided no additional context as to when I was charged an additional $1000+. Yes, I know animal care is tedious to find but this vet preys on vulnerable owners in times of peril. My dog is sick and it took several days to get an appointment but Dr Mattu worked on his day off to look at my dogs labs and X-ray and emailed me the results. The nurse, Mirna called me and told me she would wait for me after closing so that I could get my dog's antibiotics before they closed on a Saturday so I wouldn't have to wait til Monday to pick them up. Above and beyond. I get there and get the antibiotics and find out I have a flat tire. Mirna and Brittany (the receptionist) came to my rescue. They came running out and asked if I needed help I told them I would call AAA but it was going to be an hot wait. they said they would change my tire for me! What?!? So nice and made my day after crying about my dog all day. Sean (I think a vet tech?) was also instrumental to helping get the tire changed! It was a group effort but We changed it before AAA got there. They were all so sweet!! There are still nice people in this world! Not only do we love Dr. Schaefer but we love Mirna, Brittany and Sean too! No wonder my dog loves it here. read more

Absolutely amazing team and they took wonderful care of my little baby. When my cat, Ivy stopped eating and started lounging around all day, I took her to the ER because UVH wasn't open yet. UVH transferred the records over and when she didn't eat again this morning, I called ahead and they managed to squeeze me in for an appointment today. The staff were already knowledgeable about her condition. The nurse was loving on Ivy and even though she was scared, Ivy cooperated so well and even looked a bit sad when she walked out to print out the invoice. Yes, it was a bit pricey, for a check-up, blood panel, subQ fluids, some antacids, and nail trim, it came to around 500. I'm a first-time pet owner and a first-year grad student, so I don't have a lot of money to go around, but the care and attention they gave to my cat and the fact that she is already much better and playing around again made it worth it. They also answered all of my concerns about the price, medication, and her condition, and what to monitor for. I will say the check-out process was a bit rough, my card kept being declined because my debit card is super old and the chip doesn't work sometimes, and the receptionist seemed to be getting annoyed, and I'll have to follow up again to get the actual invoice because I never received an email. That might have just been me being anxious about interacting with people, but it felt like she was a bit annoyed with me and my payment not going through? Or maybe she just had a rough day, because when I came in last time I didn't have any troubles with the front desk. Overall, I am so happy that I found this vet. read more
