A delightful little market featuring organic produce, an array of gourmet organic goods from noodles to chocolate to beans to rice to chips and so on. If you are gluten free - they got you. For all sense of the words, it truly is a Berkeley bodega. It's got everything but it's all bit "crunchy and healthy". Alas, they have little deli/lunch counter (no seating). I went after their Zatar wrap was getting a little bit of fame and it was dee-licious and an inexpensive light lunch. I do believe they have some new people who have taken over the lunch counter in this small market and they've added salads and a chicken shawarma wrap to the menu. The shawarma wrap ($10.50) with a side salad was a wonderful light lunch. If you're a big eater, this is more of an appetizer, but so is the price, these days. I can't confirm, but I'd hope all the eats are organic as well. It was thoughtfully prepared, super fresh and full of flavor. A crisped wrap full of warm spiced chicken shawarma and a bit of sauce. Overall, a great spot to pick up some healthy items if you're in the hood. In addition, a great little spot to grab lunch to-go if you're looking for a more reasonably priced and healthful eats.

Badan opened in May inside the Berkeley Organic Market & Deli. It's a plant-based kitchen (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=vTPovZ8x3o1PDIfkB8aoxA) with a short menu - a soup, a za'atar and hummus wrap, and sides of hummus and babaganoush (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=wSkTHnJEmVKi5gox_isWKQ). They bake the whole grain pitas to order in a small countertop oven (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=nHzk92DXosKtjeZrP1_t7w) and all of the ingredients are super fresh! The wrap is a very good value and $4.50 standard or $5.50 with avocado (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=BTQU_LmNl32Ly4Rc4frWZg). I liked the combo of flavors of the za'atar (which is put onto the pita dough before baking) with the hummus and veggies, but thought it could use some zhug or something to kick things up a notch. I also got the hummus side (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=I3uG7OMM95lkYDRKEmn50Q). This also comes with fresh baked pita wedges (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/badan-at-berkeley-organic-market-and-deli-berkeley?select=jWSLcG52mB1-RGRwzYU3PA) and was just OK. It was really creamy in texture, if somewhat thin in "viscosity." Even with the za'atar and olive oil on top the flavor was a bit bland. I think some salt and lemon juice would give it more pop? I'm interested to try the manakeesh, which was mentioned in the Berkeleyside article I saw (https://www.berkeleyside.org/2021/05/05/smokehouse-mural-alameda-county-permitting-home-kitchen-operations), but would probably pass on the standalone hummus in the future.

A must for us every single visit is the Honey Glow pineapple -- if you haven't tried one, you're missing out. They are incredibly sweet, almost like biting into pure sugar, but in the most natural and refreshing way. It's the kind of fruit that's hard to find at your average grocery store, and Berkeley Bowl delivers consistently. Beyond the pineapple, the quality across the board is impressive. The blueberries are plump and flavourful, the oranges are bright and juicy, and the wider fruit selection never fails to catch our eye. It's clear that real care goes into sourcing what ends up on those shelves. For anyone living in or passing through the East Bay, Berkeley Bowl is absolutely worth a stop. It's one of those places that makes grocery shopping genuinely enjoyable, and the produce alone is reason enough to visit.

Great values, nice people, very expensive, limited selection, potentially old/not-as-fresh produce…read more I've been coming here on and off for the past few years (lockdown excluded) on my way home after RSF visits. Convenient place to grab something like a spice, frozen meal, or miscellaneous kitchen item. But you'll pay for that convenience. I find items are marked up ~20% compared to TJ's or Safeway. That said, I recognize this place isn't a massive chain and goes out of its way to maintain certain standards/values that regular grocers don't. I recently bought some cookies (pictured below) and a pound of pinto beans which came out to $8 after a 10% discount (tip at time of writing: get discount by filling out survey). Cookies actually tasted fantastic. The dried pinto beans seem to be a bit old based on how long it took to prepare them, still okay though. I decided not to go for the fresh fruit because they looked battered. Overall, nice place that's conveniently located, but on the pricier side and doesn't have enough to cover all your grocery needs.
