Even after price raises, this is still one of the most fair priced place in Berkeley for a very filling sandwich. They have a $2 special for a side deli salad if you want to make it a combo. Food quality is terrific, sandwich size is always there, the people are always nice, and they make it a very nice grab & go environment. Still a go-to spot!

Turkey, pepper jack cheese, and all the fixings on a sour French roll

Super quick service, the gentleman who made was friendly and nice. The sourdough bread was so good, chewy shell and soft inside but not crunchy which is exactly how I like it. So yummy! Not a lot of space to sit, but since it's kind of underground I just took mine to go anyways.

i just got a panini from here, and it's the best sandwich i've had in berkeley! the price is so good, and if you order off snackpass for the first time, you can get 10% off! chicken pesto focaccia - everything about this sandwich is so good. the bread has a garlicky taste, there is a good amount of pesto and chicken, and it's toasted to perfection! my friends did the "make your own sandwich" and they loved it too! this place is so affordable and delicious.

Great spot for a cheap, convenient meal! They have a wide variety of bread and meats for you to construct your sandwich. The food isn't too special imo--just a pretty basic sandwich, but they are solid sandwiches and although you won't get a sandwich this cheap elsewhere, they don't skimp on the size. I do wish they were open a bit later for if I want a quick dinner.

Wanted to see what the cheese n stuff hype was about, so I decided to check this place out for lunch. Ordered the chicken pesto sandwich and thought it was solid. However for 10 dollars I thought the portions were pretty small. The sandwich was pretty thin and there was not much filling. Pesto and Dutch crunch bread was good, but the chicken was bland and lacked seasoning. Probably won't come back, but I'd suggest not ordering through Snackpass since it seems they don't keep an eye out on orders through there.

The definition of a local's favorite! This hole-in-the-wall, hidden in an alleyway, has delicious, thick sandwiches for a cheap price. The owner, Sam, knows familiar faces by name. He's so funny and personable, and I look forward to seeing him every time. The sandwiches are so large and tasty for such a cheap price (less than $7 a sandwich!). The roast beef is a favorite of mine, especially with the works; there are so many vegetables included as well. The sourdough bread has great texture and taste. I dearly miss here, and hope the best for them, and that they survived the pandemic, as this place is near and dear to many students and locals.

Shredded chicken, whole cold cheese slices, white "pesto sauce"

I've ordered the chicken pesto here before and liked it, but this time it was very disappointing. The cheese was not melted, and everything was lukewarm. The "chicken breast" was shredded chicken breast meat, and had a watery texture and flavor such that I suspect it was canned, unlike the intact cooked chicken breast I used to appreciate from this place. The pesto sauce is nearly white, and is mostly mayonnaise. Overall experience was like a room-temperature pesto-flavored chicken salad sandwich... The prices are still reasonable but the quality seems to have fallen off. Hopefully they were having a bad day and this is not the actual state of their chicken pesto.

Classic sandwich spot in Berkeley with a rich college history. Can never go wrong here.

This place surprised me. It's very hidden in a small mini shopping centre that is still locked in the 1970s. To the eye the place look very vintage to the colours to the photos and memorabilia hanging on the wall. Everything is very well organised despite having an old look. The service is a bit slow but it's worth it. They're very nice and always willing you to make you food without hesitation. At times they may get hit hard with a rush, also the bread goes out fast here. My favourite is the Dutch crunch The food looks very fresh and updated. I get the veggie sandwich with everything. It's a bit too strong in the mustard side of things but I feel mustard id excessively added in order to mask the flavour of the veggies. The feta cheese in the sandwich, it compliments everything else. It's a bit strong but not overly overshadowing. Crisps and a plethora of drinks are available as well. Overall, very good quality. Don't let the vintages vibes fool you too much.

Cheese 'N' Stuff is probably my favorite sandwich shop in Berkeley. It is a bit hidden but that makes it even more of a treasure. They are super consistent with their food. Everything tastes fresh and they are never skimpy with portions. The dutch crunch bread has got to be some of the best I have had. I usually get the veggie sandwich with no spinach and replace feta with cheddar. They've never messed this up! They also have a wide variety of chips and drinks to accompany your sandwich. The best part about Cheese N Stuff is that you get a super bomb, filling sandwich at an incredible price. I would highly recommend this place, especially for other broke college students like myself!

To the server's credit he not only brought another, but to it off the bill-an impressive gesture. Unfortunately, the second one was just okay. It was significantly less than deli's in LA and NY. The latke and pickles were really good so it wasn't a total disaster. As to whether we return is up for consideration. At over $25 for a sandwich, it may be unlikely? I'm forever grateful for that recommendation because they make some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I've tried a few items on the menu, but the one I always recommend is the Hot Italian. Everything about this sandwich is incredible. It's packed with flavor, and you can honestly tell it was made with care. I usually pair it with a bag of chips, and the total comes to around $18. It's absolutely worth every penny and always leaves me full and satisfied. The shop is consistently clean, and the customer service is always friendly and welcoming. I find myself going back over and over again, then telling myself I need to take a break--only to end up back there a few weeks later. That's how good it is. A couple of things to keep in mind before you visit: there's only limited street parking, so you may have to circle the block to find a spot. There's also not much room to wait inside, although they do have a bench or two where you can sit while your sandwich is being prepared. In my experience, the wait is usually around 15 minutes. I've honestly never been here when it wasn't busy, so expect a crowd. But once you take that first bite, you'll understand why. Great food, great atmosphere, and great customer service. I highly recommend checking this place out!

They have a nice variety of items to grab that go well with your sandwich. The service was friendly and quick. Workers were all kind, and we love that it's dog-friendly! Regarding the sandwiches, you can get a hot or cold sandwich. You can also build your own! Companion got the Hot Boy, and I went the Build Your Own route. The sandwiches are hefty, with lots of great meats and fillings, and for the price, very decent! I wish my bread were a bit more toasted and crunchier, but that's my preference. It hit the spot, and I'd be open to trying their other sandwiches. I don't often go to delis, but Brothers Deli was a nice place to try. We enjoyed it by the waterfront, which makes it a great picnic option. Find them off Park Blvd., with street and residential parking around.

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

We found it very tasty, but paying over $25 for this on DoorDash--certainly not worth the price even though we really enjoyed it. The spicy chicken parm sandwiches were not good. I would be very surprised if they actually breaded chicken breast, fried it, and made the sandwich with that. It was mushy, and the breading was like paste on the chicken. Pretty awful. They charge extra for sauce, which is a little much, given that we paid $21 for each sandwich. But we figured out pretty quickly why they do this: there was hardly any sauce on the sandwiches. And precious little cheese. We each ate half of our sandwich and figured we doctor the leftovers up the next day with a jar of Rao's and a bag of shredded Italian cheese. That helped, but nothing could save that chicken. The meatballs. We paid $15 for four, and we had high hopes, but they were so mushy that they fell apart in the sauce, and I couldn't tell what was sauce and what was meatballs. The only flavor that came across was fennel. Why any meatball should be so fennel-forward strikes me as bizarre. We got what we thought were pretty basic things, and they were fails. The fries seasoning is really good and the onion rings were good as well. I got a mango lemonade drink that I really enjoyed. Cool place to watch sports and grab a good bite to eat. Now go and enjoy, you can thank me later.

I got the chicken curry salad sandwich. The best chicken curry salad I have ever had hands-down and I've had a lot. I think they put watercress in it, but I'm not sure. Just the right amount of sweet and savory. Texture was delectable and so tasty on the Acme sweet roll. I should have just eaten half of it, but I could not stop. Can't wait to have it again and I will take pictures next time.

It's essentially The Bird, minus the bacon with a couple other minor tweaks, including the softer sesame roll. Usually they just fuck up the bread and forget one of the veggies. Today, they just gave me a Bird sandwich which was drowning in mayo, not the garlic aioli I ordered - no sesame roll, no tomato, no pickled onion...just a whole other sandwich. I stopped ordering in person at the shop because someone there always ended up being kind of a dick during the interaction - either during the ordering or the pick up - without fail. You don't have to like your customers, but you do have to at least pretend to tolerate them. I'm not asking you guys anything hard. So enjoy my last nearly $19 for the completely wrong sandwich. I don't know why I kept trying.

Sometimes it's good to try something different and a place with some interesting character and characters. I usually get deli sandwiches which have deli meats but this place has fried chicken sandwiches . So I was craving a sandwich so I headed to Crave Subs in Downtown Berkeley next to BART station. They have lots of sandwiches available on the menu. On a Summer stroll getting some sun in Downtown Berkeley I landed at Crave Subs. Inside it's like you stepped into an ice cream parlor with a comic book shop and arcade and a deli all at the same time. You will see sandwiches on the menu called the Pikachu, Ned Flanders, and Bart Simpson. You will see Chewbacca fries along with the Spider-Man fries and the vegan Sailormoon fries. I got the Captain Boom Halal Fried Chicken, Boom Boom Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Crave Sauce on a roll. It was tasty and a bit crunchy and had lots of flavor. It's one of the best Halal chicken sandwiches I had. If you crave a fried chicken sandwich then Crave Subs is the spot. It will "cost "you an extra 50 cents if you want to "floss" with extra drip "sauce" to show off on social media and during OSL my social media feed was stuck in the" Land of OZ" If you want great fried chicken sandwich you don't need to visit KFC or meet the chicken"commanders" like the late "Colonel Sanders" just get a Captain Boom with "Halal chicken standards" or grab a Pikachu sandwich or a turkey sandwich called the "Ned Flanders "

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.
