Awesome service and very knowledgeable. I have a 2013 Lexus RX450h that has a permanent P0A80 code. I called 3 to 4 smot test locations and they told me they only read codes. Berkeley Smog Test Only Center was aware of the permanent code and understood the rules for passing the P0A80 code with warm up cycles and driving distance. Saved me a big headache. WARNING! If you are a little late like I was, Jessie is a real JERK. He even admitted that he was a JERK after very unprofessionally using profanity (F**k, S**t, calling me an Idiot). Do paying customers deserve to be treated so bad? I pull up at 11:14am as he's pulling out a white car and then I apologize to him and tell him there was a lot of traffic on the freeway but I rushed to get there. He says he's got other appointments and he's not sure he can take me anymore. So I wait as he pulls in a car from Weatherford BMW which apparently is a higher paying customer who didn't seem to have an appointment. The first car that he pulled out when I got there had an 11:30am appointment which the guy told me he was lucky to go half an hour early...which was my spot. So Jessie didn't lose any time or money. And apparently he took the local dealer drop-in just as I got there instead of me. Then as I was waiting, a guy pulls up in a green truck and I asked him if he had an appointment and he said "No, do I need one?" So I thought I would go next since he took 2 other cars. Then Jessie decides to stick it to me again and takes the third guy with no appointment instead of me. Really? He had now took 3 cars and the last 2 were drop ins who were paying higher prices than the Groupon customers which I felt discriminated against. When I first got there I showed him the Groupon and he told me I'd have to come back at 5pm or make another appointment for another day, to which I pleaded with him to take me next. Then when another guy pulls in at 11:36 who had an 11:15 appointment which he was late for and Jessie took advantage of getting the 2 other cars that walked in because the other guy was late too. I couldn't believe how ridiculous and disrespectful he was. I felt he discriminated against me because I had a Groupon and was harshly unforgiving for being a few minutes late. Clearly he wasn't losing any money or wasting any time as he kept taking other customers. I have never been treated this poorly by a merchant and had a HORRIBLE experience with Jessie. He makes you feel bad and gets belligerent using profanity to put paying customers down, mostly those who come in with Groupons. Treats them like trash and puts walk-ins with no appointments ahead so he can make more money. He is mean and judgmental with a tyrannical attitude, mistreating paying customers because he doesn't like Groupon. There are plenty of other professional places that treat customers with respect and don't take advantage of them by bumping them back from their appointments and making more money from others. Don't let all the other reviews fool you, he is not very nice, lacks integrity and was extremely unprofessional. read more

*IF YOU HAVE A SHIELD ON YOUR CAT. CONVERTER DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR HERE* :( I've used Berkeley Smog in the past, but unfortunately, I had a bad experience here this year. At the end of my smog test they let me know that my car failed. I have a Prius and the catalytic converter has been stolen 4 (yes four) times. The only thing that seems to work is a shield that was put on by a muffler shop in Berkeley. The worker said that he was unable to pass my car because he couldn't see the converter. Obviously, this is a totally infuriating Catch-22 in the Bay Area. I had to return to the muffler place and ask them to cut a window in the shield. Which probably makes it more vulnerable. They would not give me a re-test. Given the situation, I think it would have been pretty reasonable to offer a re-test after I cut a hole in the shield. If it was clear from the beginning that my catalytic converter wasn't visible enough, the decent thing to do would be to give me a chance to fix it before they charged me. read more

I'm sad that I have to write this because I've been here before with no issue. This time around I was met with a inconsiderate staff who was rude and aggressive. My father and I arrived to our appointment with our Groupon that stated a certain price for two smogs. Staff immediately disagreed with what the voucher stated he then called his boss who stated it was a Groupon from 4 years ago and it must be a glitch and could not honor the voucher. He hung up and we asked if there was some other deal since we bought the Groupon. He replied "you expect me to give you that price" we stated we will go else where he then proceeded to slam my hood aggressively and reverse at a high speed. Management should look into some customer service courses or do secret shoppers so they know how there business is being ran. Just a suggestion. read more

Made an appointment. The place was backed up due to a Groupon promotion. I had to wait about 30 minutes for an appoint that was at 11:15AM. I mentioned to the guy that 1 person was not adequate to run the place. He blamed the 3 people that all came in at 11:15AM. When I arrive, there were 5 people waiting and the next person did not arrive until 11:25AM for their 11:30AM appointment. So, the whole appointment process was broken when I went there. read more

I had finished my other errands earlier than expected so I decided to drive over to the shop. As I passed by there were NO cars in either bay, so I decided to arrive 45 minutes early. Mentioned I had an appointment at 11:15AM and asked if it was OK to come in early....NO PROBLEM! Filled out the paperwork all while he was getting the truck hooked up for testing. I think I was there all of 10 minutes and PASSED. The guy remembered me from prior visits. Gave him the coupon, paid and on my way. I have been bringing my truck here for 2 prior smog checks. Came to Berkeley smog test for DMV registration for new camper van. The initial smog check did not work. It was discovered that we would need to perform a drive cycle and get the computer monitors Complete or Ready in order to pass the smog inspection (it was so disappointing) however, Jessie is very kind and patient. After driving about 100 miles to complete drive cycle, we went back to Berkeley smog test around 5 pm (the store is closed at 5:30 pm). Jessie is willing to help us perform another smog test. Finally passed the smog inspection. I told Jessie that he made my month. We are so grateful for his good customer service and positive attitude. Get their Groupon! For cars 2011 or newer, they have a Groupon for $20. This price does not include the $8.25 California state fee (which is paid during your appointment) so the total will be $28.25. This is the cheapest you're going to get in the area (the Groupon is $23 for cars older than 2011). I recommend scheduling an appointment online. I made an appointment at 9:15 AM on a Saturday. The place was busy with 3 people ahead of me, but I was the only one that made an appointment so they took me first!
