It's been 11 years since I had to do a smog check because I purchased a new hybrid car, so I never needed one. I ended up going back to the exact same guy I used 11 years ago , Carlos at 15 Minutes Smog Test & Repair. Same guy, same professionalism, same incredible service. I was literally in and out in 15 minutes and paid only $40. Eleven years ago, I paid $35. In California, where prices have doubled and tripled on everything, this is honestly unbelievable. I called around before going, and everywhere else was quoting me anywhere from $60 to $80+. Carlos knows exactly what he's doing, which is why this place constantly has 5-star reviews. Super proactive, super professional, and they even cleaned my windshield while I was there. Seriously, don't waste your time chasing coupons or dealing with nonsense shops. This is my go to spot for smog checks! I like to make an appointment because they work on your car as soon as you get there. I've been there before without an appointment and other cars with appointments are worked on before mine. No big deal, since they're fine with walk ins. But if I can save 15 minutes, I'll save 15 minutes! Jose is efficient and quick! He's also friendly and appears to remember me - maybe because I've been going there for awhile! $40 for our cars, cash or credit. I brought my 1989 Toyota truck in to get smogged and I was told it had an exhaust leak. I could hear it! No wonder I didn't pass smog before! Thankfully they could fix it so I dropped the truck off a few days later and it was fixed the same day and passed smog! Hooray! Super fast and very kind service. Jose is the car doctor with a brilliant and creative mind when it comes to all areas of car repair. This man treats me like a true friend, and I've seen him treat all of his customers with clear honesty. I've never been over charged for any work and I've come to Jose since 2014 back when he was on University Ave. He's been my car physician now for over 12 years for simple needs like oil changes, smog checks on up to significant work like cooling system and transmission repairs. Jose also manages to find the best people to work for him. Every one here is very friendly, kind and deeply insightful with regard to getting the right diagnosis and also for getting the best possible repair work for the best price. This is a no-frills shop that does a great job. They are working out of one small garage so it can be a little backed up. However they have a little lounge where you can wait and they will get to your car even if you arrive 20 min before closing like I did and there are a few cars ahead of you. He's really engaging, and what blew me away was that he remembered the conversation we had last year when I dropped by and what we talked about! Honestly, I didn't remember at all until he reminded me. This guy's not just a solid shop owner, but a cool person! This year, I brought my mom's car in, and he and his crew finished in 10 minutes, short of the advertised 15! So really an in and out experience. It was also the lowest price in the Oakland area, from all my yelp quotes. It's in a no-frills location; it looks like a typical mechanic shop. But don't let the externals fool you. I never been to this smog test location before, but after checking pricing on-line and calling the five closest locations to me, 15 Minute Smog Test was the cheapest costing only $50.00 including the cost of the Smog Certificate on a CC! When I told other places what the make and model of my vehicle it seemed the price went up. Everyone of the other locations, including a place I went to last year was about $15-$30.00 more than 15 Minute Smog Test! Anyway I went there on a Saturday afternoon without an appointment, because I had some errands to run, and there was a car which just finished their smog test and another going in ahead of me. I was told it would take about 20-30 minutes, but after settling in their office and watching a video, which was less than 15 minutes long I heard the sound of my engine and before I knew it they were already done with the test! They even filled up air in all four tires for me at my request after I paid for the smog test! Jose was very nice and it was reassuring to know that he worked for Audi Service previously, as my car is an Audi. I can't say enough about the quality of the service and very competitive pricing for both smog testing and certification, which was sent to DMV for me automatically!!! read more
