I'd heard good things but never made time to make it in, but after a bad experience at another store earlier tonight, I took a chance to have my faith restored. While it was busy, one of the employees (I didn't catch his name -- shorter with glasses and a short beard) was super helpful and I grabbed six bottles of interesting wine for about $100. Beer selection was also amazing, even treated myself to an old favorite I hadn't seen in years. This is the place to go if you're trying to find something, particularly wine, that you can't find elsewhere in the area. An internet search for some difficult to find Eastern European wines led me here, and it did not disappoint. The selection is very well laid out. The focus is wine, but they have a fairly large selection of craft beers in the back as well as a smaller section for liquor. It isn't necessarily someplace I'd go to buy items I can easily find elsewhere, because I noticed the prices on some of those bottles were about 20% above what I might typically pay elsewhere. I didn't chat much with the staff here except during checkout, because I knew exactly what I wanted and found it easily, but from watching them with other customers, it was obvious they were friendly and helpful. I love these guys! Love love love 'em! I go here to replenish my wine rack. I'm no wine connoisseur, I just like to drink them. They have a decent selection of wine from all over the world. I usually have a hard time choosing one from the other. I've been known to spend an hour just deciding on 6 bottles. A whole afternoon for a dozen! So then I started to just scan the inventories and grab the bottles that only have a handful left. I figured other people must've liked this and that, so they must be quaffable. But..... Berman's not only makes it easier for me, I also get to learn a little about the wine I'm about to buy. They write descriptions on a lot of wine (not just a handful), and say something like "terrific wine for your wallet". Sold! Then I go home to my husband and pretend like I know what I'm talking about. My favorite though is the staff's recommendations. They're across from the check-out counter. I bought a bottle that was recommended by "Adam" (I think it was Adam)....I wish I had taken a picture of the bottle before it went to the recycling bin because it was really really good. These guys are awesome! Last time I was there, one of the guys saw I brought in a bag from a different liquor store. He whipped out a bag and said, "You got one of ours?" I said nope, and he simply gave it to me. Why thank you very much sir. Their bags are bigger than the typical wine bags. I have several bags from other liquor stores that can only fit 4 or 6 bottles. Berman's bags can fit 12, not that I've tried because I will probably break the handles and the bottom.....what a mess that would be, but 8 bottles easily. read more

Looking back on my life, I try to recognize where I've been wrong and take the time to admit it. I was taking a stroll down yelp memory lane when I noticed my not-so-rosy review of Berman's and immediately felt horrible, because several moves and many years later Berman's is now my go-to bottle shop and I LOVE IT. I'm sorry guys. I was wrong. I don't know what my problem was in 2009, but I doubt it was actually you. I am pretty sure it was that my ex was a pretentious you-know-what and I didn't realize it, and we all do dumb things for love, right? So let me make this right. They have craft beer on sale - 40% off - when it's "out of season". I went today and stocked up on all sorts of winter ales, 10 huge bottles for around $50. They even carried it to my car for me so I could wheel my kid safely through the parking lot in my ankle-crushing stroller. What else, what else, what else... They do tastings for beer on Fridays and wine on Saturdays, have an excellent email that goes out weekly describing specials, and even offer a discount when you buy 6 bottles of craft beer at regular price. Basically, if you drink as much as I do, your dollar will stretch further at Berman's Wine and Spirits. Got a fake id? Don't try to use it at Berman's - they have a fancy scanner that can easily detect fakes. read more

Well stocked beer cooler, running the gamut from snooty down to swill and back up again. More than meets ones needs, whether slumming it for a lost weekend with 40s of Schlitz and pounders of Ballantine, or trying to impress the Lady Friend's father with something pretentious and obscure. Bonus points for: a) just-over-the-border location on the Arlington/Lexington line. Now you too can feel like a bootlegger smuggling twelve packs over the line (even though Arlington has seemingly relaxed its Blue Laws, it still feels illicit) Bonus points for: b) the giant neon "DRIVE IN" sign with an arrow pointed around towards the back of the store. Minus points for: c) nearly causing me to total my Lady Friend's car whipping around the corner of the store only to be greeted by the wall like detritus of a back alley. Very cool liquor store on the border of Arlington & Lexington. They have a very large selection of craft beers at pretty decent prices. They also had a huge walk in cooler that was mostly stocked with cheap stuff so they ran the gamut of selections. One thing I found interesting was that Clown Shoes beer is made by the people that run this store. So not only do they sell beer, but love it so much they brew it too. The details: they have a drive in window - so cool extensive beer selection - domestic and imported and super obscure Wine - fair prices - watch for the newsletter it will list sales etc... over priced - dark chocolates/ crackers and condiments - to gift to friends you will eat them with - oh yes. Customer service - I thought very good. Funny anecdote : Ancient lady with high end clothes, too much jewelry and cloying perfume walked in - with in seconds the owner was all over her " oh Mrs Smith let me get that bottle of Vendage for you" This is one of the cheapest jug wines - I love that he was still point on w/ service. It was up high on a shelf so It may be a case of oh no Mrs Smith don't break another bottle.... read more

You have to love this place. The wine selection is extensive (from California to New Zealand) and even features many fine Bourdeaux and Sauternes. The beer offering is also none too shabby. In addition to the Sam Adams, Otter Creek, Blue Moon, and Harpoon Ale, among others, there are also my favorite Belgian ales: La Chouffe and St-Bernardus (especially the Christmas Ale!). The gourmet foods section is not just a novelty as it is in some other liquor stores that try to "branch out." These items are carefully and meticulously chosen and invite even the most casual browser to try something new. Can I tell you? Even the TEA selection is great--who ever thought you'd find Fauchon tea in the same place as your Knob Creek bourbon whisky? And, did I mention they sell quarts of Herrell's Ice Cream? I really like Bermans. Can you tell by the five stars? The staff is really friendly and there has rarely been a time when there wasn't someone working who could give a recommendation when we've needed one. They have a good selection of craft beers and, my favorite, fruit lambics. I don't drink a lot of wine but my boyfriend does and he likes the selection here. Did you ever wish you could stand at the beer cooler and just grab one bottle of each? Get thee to Berman's!...... near the Arlington/Lexington line. Go to the back room to find several shelves of individual beers so you can make your own packs - or just one or two beers. They have a wild selection of craft beers that I would never try by the six-pack, so this is the chance to try them - one by one! If you prefer, the individuals also include the standard brands, Heineken, Bud, etc. They each have their own price - my last selection of 12 ran $24, so average of $12 for a six-pack. If you wanted just the standard brands, the prices would be lower. You have to have alot of willpower to resist the sweets at the front counter - chocolate covered Oreos, anyone? read more

The Boston area has a good number of solid liquor/craft beer stores. I live right down the street and I really, really enjoy visiting Berman's to pick up craft beer, wines, and liquors. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have an excellent selection of products, and they are even expanding the store, to improve their inventory. They usually offer beer tastings (every Thursday) and wine tastings on the weekends. Aside from the liquor, they also sell local artisan breads, pastas, candy and ice cream. My favorite thing about Berman's though, is the discounts they offer. If you purchase 4 or more bottles of craft beer, you can receive a 10% discount on the purchase. In addition, they also offer periodic discounts on "out-of-season" beers. The prices are reasonable to begin with (for the area), so you will see the savings in your wallet. It is a great place to check out, if you are in the Lexington/Arlington area. read more

This is a regular go-to for me for two reasons. First, it is one of the few local places that sell the full selection of Berkshire Brewery's tasty beers (their "shabadoo" black and tan is worth the trip alone). And, they have a freezer full of Herrell's Ice Creams, including the otherwise hard to find Maple Walnut. It is solid though not five star solid on the wine front and, though I have never been treated rudely as was mentioned in another review, the reality is that some of the folks there really just don't know that much about wine and they stumble a bit when asked. Yet they do have a good selection and the written descriptions of many are actually pretty good. read more

Tip: Go to the back right of the store in the beer fridge and you can make a 6-pack mix and match of bottled beers for $6 of assorted beers (those beers aren't always the best selection but there are often some diamonds in there). My go to wine store for many years now. Great selection, great prices, friendly knowlegeble service and the owner, Joel, is a really nice guy. They import directly from France and Italy and those selections are always a fantastic value, particularly in the lower and mid priced stuff. Their Antonin Truffer Brut Tradition is a champaign style sparkling wine that can't be beat for the price. They have a great selection of microbrews and imports for beer fans too. The downsides are few and relate to what they don't have. There great French and Italian selection is offset by a limited selection from Argentina, Alsace, Spain and Germany. Also, there a few importers I would like to see them carry. I didn't select a price range because they carry all prices. read more

This is my go-to place for wine since it's close to my apartment and they have quite the selection. The prices for a bottle of wine are typical to what you see elsewhere but they do have some decent bottles on sale so if you're looking for a good deal you might find one here. The staff is helpful and will offer to assist in your selection. Berman's has a bunch of craft beer too but it's not my thing so I can't really say if it's a good selection or not. If you're looking for liquor though I'd go to the place next store (Buso's I think it's called?). read more

Very nice store, excellent wine and beer selections. They also sell ice cream, chocolate and little French knick knacks. The salespeople are really nice and always make you feel welcome. If you want a recommendation, they're more than happy to help you out, but they also leave you alone if you just want to browse. My only beefs: a) I wish they sold the 1 L bottles of Beefeater Gin. They sell the 750 ml and an unwieldy 1.5 L model. b) I wish they had a slightly larger selection of whiskeys. My husband likes Redbreast, but they don't seem to carry it. This is probably the most convenient full service liquor store for Arlington Heights residents, although the Meat House now carries a modest selection of booze. read more

I came here to get ice because the silly convenience store I went to first had a $10.00 min to use my debit card. Boy, am I glad that happened. This place is awesome! The staff is so friendly. The cashier even helped me carry my ice to the car because I ended up buying a few bottles of wine and some of the tasty chocolate treats they keep up at the front. Outstanding customer service! I had been looking for Lacuesta Vermut for a while now and finally found it....in Massachusetts. Well, I am from Chicago and I called Berman's only to find out about MA's weird liquor shipping laws. But that didn't stop Alex from trying to find a way to get it to me. When I booked a trip to Boston a couple weeks later (the vermut had a little to do with it), Alex went above and beyond trying to figure out a way to deliver the case of vermut to the place I was staying, but logistics didn't pan out. After much back and forth, I decided I had to stop on in and meet the gang so I drove to Lexington and Alex had the case waiting for me upon arrival.
