After two weeks waiting for an appointment with a fatal heart condition, the staff is utterly incompetent lazy and disinterested in helping. Dr Cooke is pleasant enough but it took staff two full weeks to fax the lab report to the endocrinologist and then over three weeks after the appointment with Dr Cook, staff Can still not tell me the name of the cardiologist Dr Cooke wants me to see. Dr Cooke:"I am a cardiologist but i don't do much anymore." The two girls are as lazy as they come. Why pretend to help someone with a bifascicular heart blockage that can lead to instant death. Today was my first appointment with Dr Cooke. I am so pleased with the entire experience. His staff is polite, friendly very professional. Dr Cooke didn't leave me waiting very long, he read my history and let me talk and he listened!! (I'm not used to that). He has a calming nature, and my blood pressure was a little high at first, it went down while he was consulting with me. I finally feel like I am in the presence of a Dr who actually cares about me. Being a nursing student, I'm getting pretty familiar with health terminology and what I should expect from a doctor's care. 1 star for: Sweet front desk service. The ladies in the office are slightly disorganized but always had a smile on their face and a willingness to fit me in. 2 & 3 stars for: Dr. Cooke's hilarious stories. That man has a funny story for everything. Who knows if they're true, but who cares?! Also, Dr. Cooke's personality. He's such a sweet person and clearly cares about patients. I had to subtract 2 stars for... I went to Dr. Cooke with my boyfriend since we wanted to have the same PCP. I know what tests I needed to get in order to get to the bottom of some of the issues I've been having with my health. In addition, I have a hiatal hernia that severely negatively impacts my life and the food I can eat. I need to have the laparoscopic surgery done, but Dr. Cooke insisted I try more medications to try to control it after 2 years of experimenting with similar medications. Dr. Cooke is more of a "eat your meat and potatoes and you'll be fine" type of doctor, which just isn't what I need at this point in my young early-20s. It's wonderful once you get into geriatrics and older adults, but I was hoping to get more answers than questions from him for what was going on with me. Very nice guy and a sweet doctor, but I wouldn't recommend him at all for anyone under the age of 40. read more

Picking out a primary care physician for my 1st physical after six years (thanks Affordable Care Act!) wasn't so simple. Referrals from friends for Primary Care Physicians [PCP] don't always pan out because those docs may not be in your provider's network. I had a lot of doctors in my general vacinity to choose from, but since the list from my insurance company's website only listed basic information and specialties I might as well just throw a dart against it. So where does one go when one needs a tip? Yelp, of course. However, I was a little disappointed that, good or bad, people have not generally posted reviews of their PCPs. There were scant reviews of the doctors in my area, and there was one medical group that had absolutely horrible reviews. Dr. Cooke's last review was posted back in 2013, but what people said about him was really good so I said, "I guess I'm gonna make this guy my doc." I'm glad I did. He's got a friendly staff in the office; YMMV but they seemed cordial with me. Dr. Cooke took his time with me. We talked about my family's medical history. He talked about his wife. It was personal; not too clinical...which I think is refreshing in this HMO world. I had some blood tests done in the same building which told of high cholesterol (f-ing Cheesecake Factory!) and had a follow up with Dr. Cooke. He really took the time to have a real conversation with me about the choices I needed to make. Now his office wasn't busy that day, but what really impressed me was that he had a phone call from another one of his patients and he didn't even attempt to multi-task; he stayed in the examination room with me to finish our conversation. We talked about meds: $4 Target prescriptions versus the brand name and generics of the name brand, and pros and cons of what was best for me. Bottom line...if you need a new doctor and you live in the East valley, go see Dr. Bernard Cooke. And tell 'im you heard about him from Mark Prior's Yelp review. He'll get a kick out of that. read more

Being new to the area I needed to find a doctor. Dr. Cooke was highly rated on yelp and other sites. He is friendly and funny and most important has a lot of medical experience. Be prepared for a great conversation with medical advice sprinkled in. BTW it is ok to change the subject to get him back in track! He takes the time to review your tests with you. You will get more time with Dr. Cooke than most doctors.....and I've never had to wait very long. He may have saved my life. As a 62 very healthy male, with minor high blood pressure, he related a story about how his friend died from an aortic aneurysm because he wouldn't take medication. "That's why they call it the silent killer". Of all the doctors I've had, no one ever put this in a why that had meaning for me. I am vigilant about the medication now. Highly recommended! read more

I just switched over to Doctor Cooke recently as I had some heart concerns and my former doctor didn't have the equipment (EKG) to check me out. Dr. Cooke and his staff are very polite, and Dr. Cooke especially commits to his patients. I also needed to get a re-fill on a prescription I received from a doctor back in Pittsburgh, and although he never heard of my condition, he took the time to look it up and analyze it for me. I returned the following week to check out my blood results (for my heart concerns) and Dr. Cooke was educated on the condition, having doing his 'homework'. I feel that he truly cares about his patients and has their best interest at heart (not their wallet!), not to mention he tells hilarious and entertaining stories. Having to go back a second time to go over my test results (taking off work and paying an addition co-pay) was sort of a pain, but Dr. Cooke went through every page on my blood work, explaining which each listing meant and where I stand in each category. If I had come in for him to give me the results and just say "you're fine", I would have given him a 3 or 4 star for wasting my time, but I appreciate his time and effort to inform me on subjects I wouldn't understand. All in all, I feel lucky to have found Dr. Cooke in a town where many doctors try to exploit HMO patients. read more

Old school. Awesome old school! Best freaking doctor ever! I'm going to be honest, whenever I have to deal with anything medical it's "I want out! Get me OUT!" But this time, I wanted to stay and keep talking to the good doctor! Man, seriously, if you can get him talking, do it! He's so smart, cool and caring. Even the office is old school, I felt, calm as soon as I walked in. Which is the opposite for me usually. Those all business offices that look like laboratories freak me the heck out. My rating was going to be three stars, but since Dr. Cooke is such a nice, caring doctor and his staff is great as well. Let me tell you my issue though - He does not know enough about cluster headaches and did not Google, Bing, or search YouTube for information. As a result, he has no idea the severity of pain these cause, and was ultimately unable to help me. Even though he is totally nice and professional , after seeing the specialist he sent me to see I feel like there is nobody on my side -except maybe Dr. Cooke's staff. + one star for them. We have worked together and he has been my primary physician for a couple of years now. He is very funny and makes it easier to be relaxed and comfortable with him. New patient: I was having chest pains, called Dr. Cooke's office first thing in the morning asked for an emergency appointment and the receptionist told me she would call me back. 3 hours went by I called back she said Dr Cooke did not answer her when asked. Called back twice same thing. I eventually went to the ER for my heart and they told me I need to see my pcp tomorrow (today) I called and it's still the runaround. No one ever called me back although she said she got my voicemail. Very disappointed in the piss poor service. Would not recommend. read more

I was concerned because the family has a history of heart disease, and you know how men are about going to the doc! I found Dr. Cooke and my husband feels he's in good hands. Oh my, worst doctor that I've ever been to. Examined me once, and put a "holter monitor" on me for a week. When I returned after wearing that damn thing for a week, it hadn't been hooked up correctly and they had no data. Even so, after only seeing me once, he wanted to schedule surgery for a new heart valve. WHAT? Needless to say I got a 2nd opinion at UCLA where I have been seen every year since (25 years now) and no heart surgery yet, not even close. Furthermore, this office tried to charge my insurance for all kinds of blood tests that they never did. Am I sure? Umm, yess, I would know if they ever took any of my blood, they didn't. Last but NOT LEAST, while he was examining me, Dr. Cooke asked me if I'd ever been to a Chuck E Cheese. I said no, why? He said that he was getting tired of this doctor business and would like to open up a pizza franchise instead.! You have been warned! read more

Unlike many of the other doctor offices that I've been to that take my insurance, his office location was nice, there's a convenient store/pharmacy downstairs, his office was clean, his front desk staff were professional & nice. Dr. Cooke himself was very personable, he listened to my concerns & made me feel like he definitely cared about me & didn't make me feel like a number on his roster. Dr. Bernard Cooke is simply divine. I cannot believe I scored such a great doctor after having been utterly disappointed & almost giving up on the idea of ever finding a medical professional capable of doing their job well, until now. His bedside manner is warm and personable along with really taking the time to "hear" what you are experiencing. Once we talked through my situation he quickly took steps to get tests done and explained to me what those tests consisted of & why I should have them done, supremely rare. He also knew I needed some immediate answers and took it upon himself to call a specialist to plead the importance of my particular case. The specialist took me in the very next day! Dr. Cooke is also very funny, he made me feel at ease in spite of our medical conversations. He even gave me a book to look through to gain more knowledge on my possible issue(s) while I got tests taken 2 floors below him. The next day, I called the office for an inquiry and they put me on hold, much to my surprise Dr. Cooke was on the line, talking me through the results (which came out all fine, TG) and wanted to know how I felt about the specialist, if "I was happy", "how it went" etc,. Sheesh, simply unheard of in our system today, sad to say. Dr. Cooke's experience, knowledge and personality is a winning combination. I feel like I am in such great hands with this superb Doctor. I was grandfather in to Dr. Cooke by my husband Aaron 9 years ago. I LOVE HIM!!!!! DR. COOKE reminds me of the Doctors from the 60's when doctors would make house calls. He is patience, kind, caring, knowledgeable and has a great heart. BTW his specialty is the heart. Dr. Cooke will even call you on the weekend and after hours , if your result concern him. I've had some pretty rotten doctors since moving t Los Angeles, so I feel very fortunate to have discovered Dr. Cooke. His offices are clean and inviting, but not fancy. His staff is friendly and efficient and their work is accurate. I've never had long waits, even though the doctor seeps to spend lots of time with me. Dr. Cook always seems to be a very knowledgable and caring. I am always impressed that he actually looks up medications before prescribing them to be sure there are no harmful interactions -- he doesn't pretend to be able to keep that all in his head. Nobody could. He is easy to talk to, asks lots of questions and lets me ask questions too. He's sensitive to my concerns, and he's a very likable guy. I really wish I could provide a positive review. Dr. Cooke was referred to me by a good friend. The office was prompt in checking my insurance and calling back to schedule an appointment. Once I arrived at the office for my appointment, my opinion quickly deteriorated. The front office staff is rude, immature and the worst I have ever encountered --that is saying a lot. Apparantly, nobody told them that doctors see sick patients because they can't handle being around sick people. I really liked Dr. Cooke, but still haven't received a call with the test results - it's been 5 days. I could go on and on about how unprofessional the front office behaves but it simply isn't worth my time. Instead, I'll take that time to call another doctor who was referred to me by another friend so I can schedule an appointment and get better soon. read more

DR. COOKE AND HIS STAFF ARE TERRIFYINGLY HORRIBLE, UNPROFESSIONAL AND 100% OUT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY! Shockingly rude, screams, insults and laughs at you & lies to health insurance to get away with his malpractices - same with the girls on his staff - feels like you are in a fight with middle school bratty girls- UNBELIEVABLE My husband went to Dr. Bernard Cooke in Sherman Oaks, CA (12626 Riverside Drive) for his annual checkup. It was later brought to our attention by our insurance broker that he was unjustly charged a $20 copay, as our Anthem plan covers in full annual check ups. My doctor's office also accidentally miscoded my check ups & had charged me $20 each visit. I called my doctor and was able to handle the issue with no problem & they sent a reimbursement check. In addition to mischarging my husband for his annual check up, Dr. Cooke insisted he return to his office to discuss test results, even though the results were normal and could have been mailed like my doctor does--this included tests he did not specifically inquire about or ask for, and this visit cost an additional $20 and was a complete waste of time. For check ups I give my husband the Preventative Care Benefits sheet provided to us by our insurance broker, which lists all the tests provided for free at annual check ups. We were advised to show the sheet to the doctor & to specify that we only want the tests done that are fully covered by our insurance in order to avoid any confusion at the doctor's office & not be charged for tests we did not need or that aren't covered as preventative care. We initially assumed that there was a misunderstanding and that Dr. Cooke's office coded his visit incorrectly. My husband called the billing office & the helpful woman there said that Dr. Cooke's office is actually in charge of the coding (my doctor doesn't do it like that), so he would have to speak with them. When he explained this to Dr. Cooke's office, both Dr. Cooke & his receptionists claimed that he had scheduled a "physical" not an annual checkup (eventually a receptionist conceded that a "physical" and "checkup" are the same thing...) and that he had been charged accordingly. Dr. Cooke was not flexible with the discussion and simply would not change anything. I called the office & was met with COMPLETE HOSTILITY & HUMILIATION from Dr. Cooke and his staff. They repeatedly LAUGHED over the phone and said we didn't understand "how it all worked", refusing to accept the possibility of a misunderstanding on their end. Dr. Cooke and his receptionists claimed they didn't understand why a $20 refund was even important and we why we cared so much about it. The receptionist kept mockingly offering to give me $20 out of her own pocket (what???) Dr. Cooke then said "look, let me tell you how this works, okay?!" and "explained" how he didn't really make money off of annual checkups but acted as though this basic service was a 'favor' to his patients and that "doctors have to make their own money too." Dr. Cooke kept interrupting me, eventually SHOUTING over the phone various insults such as, "WERE YOU THERE? DID YOU SEE WHAT TESTS I DID ON HIM!? YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!" and tried to convince me that I didn't know what my husband had come into the office to be tested for, even though me and my husband both kept reiterating that it was for his annual check up. I WAS HUNG UP ON 3 TIMES: twice by the receptionists and once by Dr. Cooke. When I attempted to call back, DR. COOKE WAS SCREAMING in the background as his receptionist tried to get me off the phone again, saying he was with a patient. She and the other staff were SNICKERING and she moaned "ohhhh my goooood! WHY do you even care?! I'm trying to control my anger here, Mrs. Robertson!"The ordeal left me crying and shaking. I could not believe how the office had treated us both over something that should be an EASY fix. My husband had already stopped seeing Dr. Cooke for a multitude of reasons; he required him to come to his office to see any test results or for any referrals (Anthem confirmed that doctors chose to do that if they want), and Cooke often made side comments to him that were inappropriate and unprovoked, including SEXIST COMMENTS about the women in his office and women in general passing it off as "guy" talk . We contacted Anthem to file a complaint against Dr. Cooke but he lied and told them he came in for a referral for snoring, which was a totally separate visit he had months later. Dr. Cooke basically combated a minor inquiry with constant lies, disrespect and false information. It is important that no one entrust their health and well-being into the hands of medical staff that run such such a corrupt office. Regardless of anything, it is unacceptable to treat patients, or anyone for that matter, with such disrespect and rude behavior and it was one of the most unsettling and shocking interactions me or my husband has ever encountered. I went to Dr. Cooke for the first time this year. Dr. Cooke himself was very slow to treat with a "wait and see" approach and a very slow turnaround time with diagnostics. I gave two stars because he called to check up on me. His staff is terrible - always gives me an attitude like I'm bothering them and always gives the pat "I'll tell the doctor" answer resulting in me not receiving what I need. read more
