Maybe I came here on a bad night, but it was just 'ok' for a divie. Definitely felt like a townie bar, but had interesting conversations with some colorful characters. I was being a lame-o and didn't have any of the Lithuanian beer. I do dig the buzzer though. Cash only bars are not my usual spot, and combine it with a dive bar, and you got something I normally wouldn't like. But Bernices is a quirky little place, with good, cheap beer and friendly people. First bar I went to in Chicago. The drinks were reasonable priced, and the night we went, there was live music including a non-offensive cover band. (That's about as complimentary as it gets for me and cover bands). Met one of the owners who bought us a drink. Not too shabby in my opinion. Definitely made me feel at home in a great big new city. I have been going here for such a long time. You have to be buzzed in but eh, no big deal about that. This is probably my new favorite bar in Chicago. The bartender, Mike, was extremely friendly. He asked how we heard about the place, and laughed when I said that I had just read about the place on Yelp. They have great beer at decent prices along with PBR for $2 so it can be a cheap bar destination. However, I highly recommend the 19oz Lithuanian beer that they have for $5. The vibe was very chill and music was playing at a very pleasant volume. I will definitely be back on one of their live music nights. read more

So my boyfriend and I just moved to Chicago from Portland, Maine. I'll be honest, some of the bars in Chicago are a little intimidating. And huge. This place is more of what we're used to but with a little more diversity (which was to be expected). Plus it's right down the street from where we live, so we can take our bikes if we're feeling daring. My boyfriend and I are pretty into open mic nights, and this place has one every Thursday night. So far it's one of the few places we've been able to meet other people with the same interests as us. It's seriously like a home-away-from home. Y'know, as far as bars go. Bernice's Tavern is my favorite bar. I usually start every visit with a Svytury's Baltas White Beer which I've only encountered at Bernice's. I always discover decor or art I didn't see my previous visits. There's so much to look at while you enjoy your favorite buzz. The dive bar delivers a very chill vibe. There's a jukebox and a book of tunes hand selected by Steve and Mike. A lot of times they will put credits on the jukebox already. Otherwise, it's 3 songs for a dollar. Stingo nights it can be chock full of people, I usually enjoy the bar during the week when it isn't crowded and I'll throw on some Stones or Velvet Underground tunes. This was a nice bar for one that has to ring you in. About the only other bar I have ever seen that you are required to ring was on Laramie in Cicero. I don't know if this means something about the neighborhoods or not. The ber was cheap and the bar was old looking. Not a real big place and only about one large group of friends can fit comfortable at a time, so only go there with no more than one other person. read more

About 3 years ago, we had moved to Bridgeport,albeit with some trepidation. Don't get me wrong, neighborhood was friendly enough, but I'd heard it was a little clannish. Well, aside from a couple neighbors we won over (helping little old ladies by shoveling their snow works wonders) I found Bridgeport a warm and nice community. And Bernices Tavern is the warm and nice headquarters in Bridgeport, for sure. First time I walked in there, I felt at home. Over the last few years, I've had bartenders offer rides home, (thanks Mike) been invited to various regulars parties, gone to White Sox games. I love this place. Bernice herself is pretty cool, very low-key but you can tell she's got a lively sense of humor. The only bar that I've seen not one single bad moment in.
