Nowadays, there's not so many places to go for a business 'lunch' ...But Mitchell's fills that role nicely. It proves to be a good place to catch up on the emails, text messages and phone calls you can't respond to in Chicago traffic. Parking is good most afternoons. The selection of drafts will satisfy most folk. The staff is attentive but not intrusive. Most important to me is the opportunity to play a favorite tune on the iTunes Jukebox while I think. Seemed like a good vibe, ordered a gin and tonic easy on the tonic, ended up with a double tall glass with a microscopic dribble of gin with the tonic filled to the very top of the glass and then an extra splash for good measure. The outlay of the bar itself is great. The crowd is typically onoboxious "Bobby Big Balls" personality. A majority of the crowd is really overbearing past midnight. I recommend going before 9pm and leaving before midnight. Nothing good happens after midnight and gets progressively worse after that point. read more

Funny the "little gems" you come across when you put your mind to finding a new place to relax and have a drink. While a bit unfamiliar with Bridgeport (no that's an understatement- I had NEVER been here before) someone had suggested Mitchell's to me as a great place to grab a beer and some friendly conversation. So on a snowy night- we headed south down Halsted to Mitchell's. The first thing I loved? Plenty of street parking right in front of the place. We settled in at the bar and glanced around. Mitchell's, while not huge, has room for at least 20 at the bar and tables scattered around which will seat at least 30 more. If just siting and drinking is not your thing- they have a variety of bar games including my favorite "bar darts". They also have a pretty good jukebox although how good it is depends on who is shoving the dollars into it on the night you are there (heavy metal anyone?) The beer is cheap, the selection of beer fairly impressive, and the people friendly and chatty. On the first time we were there- the bartender won our hearts (could it have been the free shots?) and it is because of her that we have been back several times. I also discovered "wooden nickels" at this place as they were used as markers for free drinks. And who doesn't love a free drink? Not fancy- which is just fine with me. I am so over those places that want to be like Mitchell's and try so hard but never achieve it cuz its the people that make a place like this. And you can't get that everywhere! read more

This is just a great bar. Very welcoming and cool atmosphere. Sox games are always on and the deck out back is great for sunny days. The food was actually very good. I had the polish and it was fantastic. Around the Cell, you aren't going to find a better bar. Stop in and take a shot. read more

Another gem of a place in the south side. You do realize that Chicago is a "working class" town founded on steel and constructions....not the service and food industry?!?! If you do, then you'll appreciate the bars that exist in the southside as original and authentic..........now what do I mean by authentic? Well you can walk into many a bar in the north and not one...........and I mean not one person will speak to you, but on the south side everyone is quick with a word or joke and makes anyone feel at ease and "one of the crowd." Mitchells is very much like this...the neighborhood is very safe (cop station just down a block or so) and the bar was recently renovated, so it is clean and well lit. Add several TVs and bar darts and you have a little place to have some drinks and some fun. No food though, but they do have an extensive menu delivery list. Beer is very reasonably priced and a good selection in addition to some specials though the week. The crowd really picks up the later you get into the night. A gem in a sea of gems actually........whether you believe it or not. read more

Down by Negative Addison street, the demographics on this part of South Halsted are similar to its north side counterparts- 2/3 male, concentrated at 25-35, the only diversity marked by the direction of your baseball cap. The difference is, on this side of Madison, things are just as chill as they ain't on the other side. Hockey, like the south side, is an underdog. Mitchell's tap is a good place to experience both underdogs in one visit. Five televisions (one large screen), sound booming in surround, and absolutely everyone there is glued to the television (at least on a Blackhawks playoff night). Being a hockey idiot, I hoped to learn a thing or two by eavesdropping on my neighbors' commentary. Wisdom was delivered in single-line packages: "put the goddamn stick on the goddamn puck you a**hole!" "f*** the ref!" "move the f'n puck!" "between his f'n legs! that's a b*tch!" (Detroit 1-0) There are no fewer than 40 beers offered here, some of them real fancy (Delirium Tremens, Fin du Monde) alongside some real cheap options (PBR $2.25, most domestics at $3.25). Prices are carefully calibrated, usually something-twenty-five or something-seventy-five. "THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT, BABY!" (Chicago 1, Detroit 1) Footage of the Hawks' goal replays repeatedly. One guy, like a pirate with short term memory loss, hoarsely screams "YEAH!" each time Kane's high shot sinks into the exact same spot at the back of the net. Nothing new happens, the game drifts into overtime. Cherry bombs are selling like hotcakes. On second thought, I've never seen people get so excited over hotcakes. "Somebody hit the m'f'ers!" "Shoot the f'n puck!" Who says men aren't in touch with their emotions? Early overtime, the Wings score their second goal. Sobering as it is to see the Blackhawks' turnaround season crash to a halt, everybody's still buzzed. read more

This place is totally hot. Yeah, I said it. Although I wasn't here when it was late nor packed, the staff and the large beer selection gave a great vibe. The bartenders were super friendly and chatty and it seemed like everyone was just waiting for the clock to hit a certain time to really start to get bumpin'. Some dude was practically doing a little tap dance for me. There's one of those TouchTunes jukeboxes here so the music is a wild array of whatever someone poked at. BEST 'wooden nickle'. If you know what that is and know that you want one, then just a tip - they have them here so be nice and maybe you'll see one. GREAT White Sox bar! Before games, you can get a whole pitcher of PBR for the same price as one beer in the ball park ($6). Fun clientele and lots to do. There's darts, Golden Tee and the outdoor patio is great. One reviewer said he was disappointed that the bags weren't out, but I'm sure you have to ask for them! You need to leave your license as collateral and they'll let you use the bags set as long as you want. Before games the bar isn't too crowded and after games it's packed with fans. There's great TVs and a juke box. On Opening Day they even have pitcher specials and an outdoor grill serving free hotdogs and burgers. I'm pretty sure they don't have food normally, but I've never asked. They have some snacks like chips and peanuts available for purchase. I lived in the area when this used to be Puffers and I think this was a change for the better. Puffer's was fun, but a bit too much of a dive for most people's taste. When it changed to Mitchell's, a lot more IIT students started coming over on weeknights and it made for a fun atmosphere (I'm obviously a college student). On any given night, there's always a good crowd, but it's not too crowded; a great bar for games and any night you're in the neighborhood. read more

$7.50 for a pitcher of PBR. Really cant go wrong with that. I went with my brother to redeem a groupon I had bought. The bartender comped us the difference of the groupon and our purchases(3 pitchers of ribbon), so that was cool. He got a nice tip as a thank you. Digital jukebox, darts, and a punching bag game are the entertainment. Also, plenty of tvs(that were tuned to the hawks game and the late bulls game). I suspect I'll hit this place up come Sox season. read more

Mitchell's is definitely not my first or even second choice of bars in the neighborhood, but that can hardly be attributed to the bar itself. I'm mostly not a fan of the people who frequent the bar. Myself and my friends have run into more than a normal amount of assholes at bars. As far as the bar itself goes, its just pretty good. Decent prices, nice sporty atmosphere, a couple of bar games with a jukebox, and a nice outdoor section. Their food used to be legit until they stopped serving food, which is why I knocked it down from 4 to 3. The staff has always been nice to me. If you want sports and are hungry, go to Wings and Rings down the street. If you want sports and to just drink, this is probably a better choice, but get there early. It gets packed. read more

I have been here once and the only reason we went there was because Buffalo Wings & Rings was too crowded. Their food is not very good but then again that's expected because it's a bar. We ordered a pizza and it tasted just like a frozen pizza but in a way I think you could have been cooked a little longer. I think this bar is more for regulars in the neighborhood. read more

It's a great place to go during a Sox game. This place use to be Puffer's, but the bar was sold back in October 2006. There are bowling and golf machines and darts can help pass the time as you go through the menu of more than 35 varieties of beer, with an ever-changing tap-beer selection that includes new specialty brands on a VERY frequent basis. Like many have commented, this is a decent neighborhood sports bar. Friendly/talkative bartenders and patrons. One of the few go-to spots after Sox games. It's pretty laid-back here. Tons of parking (during non-game days of course). Nothing special but also not awful. read more

Oh, how I long for the old days of Puffer's. Mitchells' Tap, I have a love/hate relationship with you. In October 2006 the place was sold and has undergone many changes. While I appreciate the upgrade is TVs, and the great re-bricked patio, I can do without many of the new clientele. I long for the days of knowing what to expect when I meander across the street and belly up to the bar. These days I can be seen peeping in the window to see who is inside before I make the trek to a barstool. Recently, there has been an influx of young, rich Italians taking over. I get tired of $150 Juicy Sweatpants (because, like, this place isn't cool enough to, like, really get dressed and ready), Chanel handbags, and 90's dance music (Sexual by Amber makes me want to rip my ears off.) blaring from the God-awful downloading jukebox. Despite the sometime awful people who choose to consume their devil-juice at Mitchell's, the place does have some great highlights. They have a great beer selection. German's and Belgians being what strike my fancy. They have a great, albeit slow, bartender on Tuesdays and Thursdays who fights the for Jazz on the Jukebox. They have a great, large beer garden. They are in excellent proximity to my home. I simply must play real-life frogger to get home at 2am. So, visit Mitchell's, just peek in the window first! read more

Popped in with some friends after the White Sox game on Sunday afternoon. Was surprised to see just a handful of (probably) regulars at the bar. Menus are on the tables, but you have to place your food order at the bar. If you want drink refills, same thing -- no table service. Italian beef and fries are pretty good, but you can get good to great Italian beef and fries 100 different places in Chicago. Sarah makes one of the very best margaritas I have ever tasted in my life. It is also quite efficient in its buzzability. The patio is a good space except for the porta-potties, although I guess they might come in handy if the place was crowded. I've been going to Mitchell's for years, and at one point (though I hate to admit it) I was going a few too many times a week. It's a great neighborhood bar that has really cleaned itself up from way back when. Very decent prices and it's a great place to play darts (if you get there early enough). The bartending can be bad at times, but this is usually only when it's really busy and thus you can't squeeze up to a spot at the bar. I was really surprised by this place. I went out tonight expecting to stop here first, with Bernice's being the main event (due to all the good things I'd been hearing about it), but Mitchell's came out ahead. We had extremely friendly bar staff (male and female, so I don't suspect a gender bias) hooking up free shots and drinks from the moment we entered the door. I'm not sure if it was because we were obviously new, or if they were just in a good mood, but it was appreciated. Aside from it being free, the selection of beers was also respectable. I was happy to see, first on the list, Three Floyds Alpha King, my current favorite brew. Also present was Fin du Monde, delirium tremens, the increasingly-ever-present fat tire (on tap), and about 20+ other beers of various styles (import and domestic/swill and good). Ample room to be there with a group of friends without having to feel packed in like sardines at a divey bar, yet it still felt pretty homey and low-key. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a pool or air hockey table, but apparently (according to one of the regs) Daley drove those out of southside bars because they were causing trouble (the pool tables at least). To make things better, the jukebox selection was great, and kept me busy for quite a while, when I wasn't busy in conversation with the really friendly regs and staff. I will definitely be coming back here again, especially if I'm in the mood for a messy night! read more

This is a pretty good place, and was really the only option for the year that I lived a few blocks away. The is cheap, but they have nicer options if that's your thing. There's a plastic dart board, and in the summer you can play bags on the back patio. The atmosphere is really relaxed and the bar is rarely crowded unless there's a Sox game. On the day of the home-opener they have a giant party and free food. It's totally packed and everyone is friendly. I've met some questionable sorts here, but you just have to careful about who you hang out with and you'll be golden read more

So if you don't want to hang out with the Gotti boys on Friday night as they shove stacks of singles into the touchtunes jukebox and play the entire lil wayne album, don't go here. They built bathrooms outside in the yard. Bathrooms that lock. So now a guy can take a crap without someone walking in on his big ol' swinging dick. The employees are great and the food rocks. They guy who said this place deserves negative stars is absolutely correct in my opinion. This place was so much better when it was Puffer's. They used to have this one bartender who would drink during his shift and forget to charge for drinks, plus people never got out of line because you knew there was no security and you would have to settle it by yourself. Ah, those were the good ol' days. Now it looks like a place out of Orland Park. Listen up people just because it has belgian beers doesn't make it alright. Plus the crowd is now all the guidos from either armour park or I'm guessing somewhere from Burbank perhaps.
