The other day, I had to pick up a bottle of champagne from this place. I was seriously impressed as to how posh this place is...of course, situated in the heart of St. James's, what else could you expect? Well, I'm really "digging" the interior of this store - you actually feel like you're being transported back several hundred years; which actually is quite true, as this store has been around for a very very long time! Anyway, what I kind of disliked, was that the person who got my order ready, was quite a snob - very uptight British and made me feel as if I wasn't a worth customer. (Maybe he didn't approve of me coming into such a posh store with a hooded sweater?) Also, their website is really awful: I was trying to find out, where the store would be, but the website is impossible to maneuver through. It's all online selling, but there's no apparent link that will point you to where the actual store is! Well, thanks to Yelp I actually found it! So, three stars for this experience, but I might just come back another day again, as their selection of wines is incredible! read more

Very disappointed in their service and this wasn't the first time experiencing this at this shop. Walked in the shop and immediately behind me was followed by a man. My presence wasn't even acknowledged but they seemed more than happy to help the man five seconds behind me. Did a little experiment while I was walking around. Noticed the same thing with another woman when she walked in. Man walked in, immediate service. I worked in wine and spirits for years and it's extremely disappointing to see this behavior. Being teetotal because I don't like the taste of alcohol, Berry Bros isn't the type of shop you would normally seen me in. However, I needed to pick up a group thank you gift and was directed here by a knowledgeable Yelp friend, who had found some whiskies which aren't available in the USA I've never been down St James's Street before and found myself in definite high end territory with merchants selling luxury cigars, men's grooming and other goods I love the outside of Berry Bros - it looks historic because it is historic with a sign proudly proclaiming that the shop has been here since 1698 though in those days, it sold tea, coffee and spices. Hence the presence of a giant coffee mill inside the shop However, these days, it's a high end alcohol merchant. I must have looked like a fish out of water (well, I was surrounded by alcohol!) with the shop divided into specialist areas for the different types of alcohol I was swiftly asked if I needed any help and then taken into the whisky room and with minimal fuss, the 1997 Longmon I was after was located and I was taken to the till On finding out that I would be flying this precious cargo out to the USA on holiday, my French server immediately, offered to package it to be safe to fly. My bottle was gift wrapped and placed into a padded Wineskin, all for free, The service I received was top notch and my server also told me tyhe very interesting history of the shop and the company - it's still family owned and is now into the 8th generation It's a pity I don't drink as this looks like a great place to pick up special products. Great big thanks to Yee Gan O. for introducing me to Berry Bros! On Yee Gan's recent visit to SF, he brought along a particular bottle of scotch I had not seen before. He mentioned that it was a gift for someone and that you could not get it here in the U.S. This, of course, peaked my curiosity and I knew that I had to come check it out for myself in London. What an amazing shop! It's not like a liquor store I've come to know at all. It is more like a winery of sorts, where there are well dressed men and women who are so knowledgable about liquor you would have never even heard of otherwise. They are actually the owners of the Glenrothes whiskey brand thus they make their own whiskey. Oh yes, you heard me, they bottle their very own collection of whiskeys dating back to the 60's and 70's! You can find some incredibly complex and amazing flavors here at Berry Bros and they're more than happy to give you a taste with the cutest little glencairn glasses ever! The whiskey here isn't cheap, but it certainly is incredibly rich. The history of the shop and the history of their whiskey is definitely an interesting tale while you wait for your bottles to be wrapped, and they can even give you a few pointers on whiskey if you're new to the concept. Fantastic and a must visit for any whiskey enthusiast! read more

Heartbreakingly learned about this old place years after last London trip on a US travel show. I placed it at the top of my list for next return trip. Went one evening by myself so as not to be disturbed. Minuscule in size compared to "Total Wine" in the states. More like a privately owned American wine shop. But amazing selections from all over the world nonetheless. Absolutely, the best of the best. Sales staff are extremely knowledgable, courteous and helpful. I was in search of a fine and reasonably priced French Bourbon for my collection. I had been torn between two private "own labels" being offered. One an XO Cognac and the other an XO Armagnac. I was allowed to sample the in-house proprietary bottled bourbons liberally. With no exaggeration, it was a difficult decision. Finally, I chose the Berrys' XO Cognac, 2nd Edition (43%). This is only one out of the twenty four "Berrys'" privately labeled spirits. Looking forward to next London trip for my next bottle. Check out this 321 year old shop for their 4,000 plus wines too. I've been to London twice, and now have been to Berry Bros. on each trip! Aside from being an absolute fan of their independent bottling of whisky, their history is really awesome and I was able to go into their original space where I learned their initial history and saw some really neat and vintage items! But let's get back to what matters, the drinks! Their selection is just amazing, curated from different places in the world, both the source bottles and their own independent bottles for not just whisky but other spirits, wines, you name it! I typically stick to the scotch, but their wine selection is rather incredible and reminds me that California wines are just a 1% of the world. The staff is amazingly friendly and will offer up tastes of things you might be interested in if they have it available, including all their bottling selections. I have so far bought 6 different bottles there and was able to taste each one before making the decision to purchase, not to mention their selection on each of my trips, about 4 months apart, varied which gave me more reason to buy! The Berry Brothers & Rudd store on St James does not only have a great variety of all sorts of alcoholic drinks, but the building itself is quite stunning. I have gone by several times, mostly to buy alcoholic presents, and I have always found something that was greatly appreciated by the people that I gave it to. I especially like their choice of champagnes, and if in doubt, the sales staff are more than knowledgeable about their spirits. The only slight problem I have with this establishment is the snobby attitued of the personnell. Of course I understand that this is St James, the home of the wealthy British gentleman, but I would still have hoped for a slightly less arrogant and judgmental attitude from the people that make their money with selling to their customers. read more

For some odd reason, it's really hard to ship wine into Greece. Every winery and respectable retailer I tried basically said they weren't licensed and normal shipping costs would have been pretty prohibitive. So on a recommendation I was pointed to Berry Bros and Rudd. I wanted to give a gift of California style wines to my very hospitable friends in Athens and this seemed to be the best avenue. They don't carry tons of CA wines but what they do have is pretty well regarded. Bought a bottle of Dominus and Ridge Montebello for the present and I can't say it was cheap but it sure beat shipping from home. Now even through they don't have a huge CA section, they still have an excellent portfolio all around. read more

Spent an hour with their spirits buyer who is the most knowledgeable I've seen in any shop in the UK or USA. Witty and personable as well. He took the time to ask good questions and respond with spot-on recommendations backed up by good rationale and tasting samples to demonstrate. Truly a pleasure. On my tour of London wine shops a stop at one of the oldest, Berry Bros & Rudd, was a given to visit. Housed in a stunning old building (the original they set up shop in) in St James it is a central location. The place feels extremely traditional and has a high class feel to it. Plenty of staff working there and they are striking a good balance between being helpful and service minded while at the same time not being intrusive. The selections of wines is i,prrssive, they have a great selection of both more expensive wines and also some cheaper ones. They do carry their own line of wines under their own brand name. I am yet to try anything from their own range but would be interesting to give it a try as some of it is very decently priced at between £6-8 a bottle. The focus wine wise appears to be on tradition old world wines so good selection from France, Italy and Spain but the selection from the US and Australia and other new world wines is smaller but still good They do not only carry a respectable selection of wine but also good selection of other spirits. Largely this is one of my favorite places for wine but what I am not too fond of is that there are relatively few wines on display so not optimal to browse. They have a computer to search the web site as they can bring up anything they have in stock but unfortunately their web site also has an ancient feel to it (like a revival of the late 90s) but this is still a great wine shop. read more

84 pages of Rhone wines available on their website but they only carry 3 northern Rhone reds at this location--at least, in the smallish sales room that I was shown to. A single bottle of Cote Rotie (and no St Joseph). I have to judge this establishment on what I was shown when I visited. I had the distinct feeling that the salesman who ran interference at the front was trying his best to do an impression of a bouncer at some wannabe-nightclub. At a minimum, he should have presented me with additional options for purchasing the appellations that I was asking about (and have purchased by the case through the back office). The building is beautiful from the outside and historic, and the retail front's selection of Bordeaux and Burgundy was considerably higher. Anyway, the Cote Rotie that I bought here was a good value and I enjoyed it. read more

I had chance once attend a wine tasting evening with a guest in this legendary winery, it was a very impressive, memorable evening. We were showed around the store, a secret garden at backyard, the weight for coffee and guests, and the underground cellars and corporate event area before joining approx. 15 people for the wine tasting evening. A wine master hosted the speaking for nonstop 2.5 hours, introducing each of 8 wines from St Julien & St. Estéphe, including 2001 Ch. Palmer Margaux 3ème Cru Classé (priced 155 pounds/bottle) which was my favourite in the evening, with 3 types of cheeses, biscuits and grapes. I did google search after returning and wrote a blog in Chinese about history of BBR.com and my experience. The best part of the evening was somebody paid 145 pounds per head for me and a guest. :) read more

This place is fantastic and I'm amazed that no one has reviewed it yet! I got the opportunity to have a search around their wine cellars a while back (you have to be very lucky to do that so points to them!) and the little tour we got was just great fun. But the shop itself is also great. There's a great little display of fun things, some really old wine making equipment and lots of information. You can also do courses in wine tasting in the apothecary looking classroom. Yay! I wish I could afford to buy wine here. It's great, but being in Mayfair means that you pay the price for it. That said, the shop is worth the trip just for the history and nosing about. If you can afford to buy anything, that's just a bonus. read more

One of London's original wine merchants (if not the first). The Queen shops here - and so should you. It's an awesome, historic place (tourists take note!) with a selection of wine (and spirits) for every taste and budget - from something to go with dinner for under a tenner to big time investment wines. Was surprised to overhear one of the employees speak down to a customer asking for help finding a full-bodied red for a dinner party he was attending that evening. He recommended amarone right off the bat, clearly mocking the customers question and lack of knowledge of full bodied reds by suggesting the "most full bodied reds of all" while not offering any other types. The customer asked follow up questions about what else might qualify but was told "well, if you want FULL BODIED, this is your wine" Really poor customer relations and just another example of how people who are working on understanding wine should be treated equally as those of us with deeper knowledge. I'd find it unlikely I'd return here despite their reputation. read more

Not much to say here. This is one of the best wine stores in the world. I just wish their California collection was a bit better.

I buy their special reserve Scotch each year when I visit London. (The Brits call it "whiskey" so to avoid confusion for my countrymen, I will refer to it as Scotch!). If you like Scotch, you can't do better than Berry Brothers and Rudd. They buy highland distilleries' casks, warehouses' and age it and then reblend it or bottle it as single malts. They export a fair amount so some versions of a reserve mix may only be available for export. Service is elegantly English, understated, and polite. I see the same staff here year after year. They are very helpful because there are three walls full of bottles to choose from. You cannot find these blends of Scotch anywhere else in the world. They also have some fine single malts. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. You can taste many of their bottles. They run from the rough to the refined! Truly a unique spot. read more

Perhaps my expectations are too high, but then again this is the supposedly world famous and historic BBR, right? My first impression walking into the shop was how cool, albeit small the storefront was this is the only reason they got any stars. Looking on the selection of wine it was unremarkable. It left me wondering if I'd missed some room somewhere I kept looking for a hidden door leading to a better selection. I originally went in there because I mistakenly thought that the great BBR might be a good place to find a hard to find Emilia Romagna Sangiovese. Turns out they have none from that area. This is frustrating but forgivable. What happened next was less so. I then asked "ok, do you have any Pet-Nat's" now I realise this is a bit of a wine geeky question, but come on I'm not just asking anyone I'm asking BBfrigginR so my jaw dropped a little when the clerk says "what's that"... My response you know, Petulant Naturel natural sparkling wine. There are many nice ones from France. The clerk then seemed to kinda understand and explained that they had something that had bottle fermentation like what I was looking for only not in the shop. She then said something to the effect of you know that it's not as bubbly "only like 4 atmospheres" to which I say compared to what? The clerk says "Champagne". Well duh, I didn't ask for a Champagne I asked for a type of wine not made in that style. Look, I get it. I'm being a wine snob here. But if there's any place I should be able to do that its this place, right? Even if they don't sell the wines I want they should at least know what they are. read more

Five stars, no doubt. I've been shopping at BBR for about fifteen years, and the selection and service are the best in the world. Own brand products are easily the equal or better than the big names, the Pickering 20 year old tawny Port and BBR Champagnes being the standouts. They will gladly pack your bottles safely for export, and are happy to serve you with a smile. Please do not be put off by the rather grand premises, there is a distinct lack of snobbiness there. There's not many shopfronts in London that can claim to have housed the same company since 1698. That's why a trip to Berry Brothers & Rudd is not only a visit to one of the finest wine shops in the country, but also a museum visit. The room drips with history, and around the place you can see all manner of signs of the age of the place, including a telegram from the White Star Lines explaining that the consignment of wine aboard their ship The Titanic wouldn't be coming back, and also the ledger books which staff would record the weight of patrons who wanted to show off to their upper-class mates to see who was the fattest (and therefore most prosperous). It's very much a wine & spirits shop however, and a company doesn't stay in business that long without understanding its marketplace, so it's a must-visit if you're looking for a nice bottle of wine, champagne, whisky, cognac, gin, port, sherry, or pretty much anything else. You'll find high quality offerings at most price points, and the staff really know their business. It's unlikely you'll find much in the way of £4 bottles of plonk, but then it would be silly to go all the way to St James's Street and expect Sainsbury's. read more
