A quick Google search for a cozy brunch/lunch spot in Oshawa led me to Berry Hill Food Co.! Brunch is served on weekends (which we sadly only found out when we got there), but lunch & dinner are available throughout the week. The restaurant is split into two main areas: high table booths and a more open space with the usual tables & chairs. I would recommend seating in the latter area because there seemed to be more light. Food-wise, the portions were generous and scrumptious! The salmon bowl was creamy, zesty, packed with crunch. The Italian sandwich was fantastic as well, with a generous layer of mayo on ciabatta covering layers of cured meats, cheese, arugula, & roasted red peppers. Of course, we couldn't leave without getting caffeinated ;) Service was friendly from the get-go, but our food did take a long time to come out due to backed up takeout orders. WOW! Just Wow! I've only been to the spot 3x but each visit was better than the last. The service is incredible along with the great food. The cocktails and the best mimosas ever! Was there for a brunch and it was so tasty. Can't wait to return! This was an absolute delight to discover given we experienced horrendous service at One Ten in Whitby which we now call 0/10 or zero for short. Berry Hill has been around Oshawa for many years delivering great food and service. We have been here several times for brunch but our most recent experience was for dinner. We wanted to eat at other establishments but no one else could seat 7 with such short notice. Thank goodness that was the case because eating here reminded me to support these local businesses more often. Service was great but a little slow but that is because the food is prepared fresh and comes to your table super hot. Kids had the pizza which they said was the best pizza they have ever had. Wife had the massive black bean meatloaf and I have the steak. My steak was seasoned very well with pepper and the perfect amount of salt that enhanced every bite of steak. Seasoned fries were also very good as the side. The other members of our party had the lamb burger, and steak sandwich. Everyone loved their plate of food. Berry Hill also does food for Parkwood Estate and host some very good Tea Parties at the local art gallery. We were so impressed with the service, portion size and flavours of every dish. This is probably my favourite restaurant in the Durham Region. read more

I realized that I needed to shift the original date of the reservation up by 1 day, and contacted Berry Hill 3+ weeks before the scheduled date to see if I could shift my reservation. No response. Followed up again a week later, and was told that someone would get back to me. No one did. Finally contacted them again the day before my requested new date, to cancel altogether - as I had still not heard from anyone, and was not able to make the original date. I have every confidence that the food is likely excellent, but they really need to work on their customer service and customer retention processes. read more

I've been hearing a lot of good things and was dying to try it out. I heard they are big on supporting local, so let's see what they've got! Off to downtown Oshawa, my friend didn't even know it was there. Small and bright, The kitchen takes most of the space inside, but they also have a cozy patio. When you first walk in you are immediately staring at their baked goods on display, taking a mental note of what you want for dessert, if you have room. I knew what I wanted before I got there. The reviews lead me to Eggs Benedict with Peameal Bacon. So, what's the big deal? I'll tell you what the big deal is...the hollandaise sauce amazing. Is the peameal bacon amazing? Yes. Is the mini fruit salad amazing? Yes. Are the fried seasoned potatoes amazing? Hell yes! It has a gourmet feel. The hollandaise sauce is clearly made in-house and not full of preservatives. Great job! It's worth the hype! My friend went with the Downtown Monsieur. Egg dipped bread with roasted ham, smoked greyere cheese and onion jam topped with bechamel. What a great combination! There's something about egg dipped bread that gives real character to a sandwich. The fact that almost everything is prepared in house, makes it taste that much better. On my second visit, I couldn't resist the Banana Caramel French Toast. Three slices of fresh, egg dipped baguette smothered in caramelized banana with a little extra caramel to seal the deal. I was expecting it to make my teeth hurt because it sounds so sweet, but I was wrong. The sweetness came from mostly natural sugars which made it much more paletteable. It was delicious. The bananas are freshly caramelized and they are hot! Be careful! Hard to resist since it looks so good, but patience! The coffee is FANTASTIC! It's a local roaster, Trebilcock, from Pickering that supplies Berry Hill. The mugs are huge and the coffee is plentiful. This alone keeps me coming back....or at least wishing I brewed coffee at home. The service can be slow at times, but it's worth the wait. We ordered a smoothie, Asparagus & shrimp Eggs Benny and Veggie Delight. Berry burst Smoothie - Tasted fresh and authentic without any added sugar. Asparagus and shrimp Benny - Asparagus was replaced by green beans without any notice. Later I found out that they ran out of asparagus. Would have been nice if they had told me when I ordered. I can't complain about taste of eggs Benedict though which is why I'm giving overall 4 stars. Perfect hollandaise sauce poured over the top of runny eggs. It also came with roasted potatoes and side of fresh fruits as shown in the picture. Veggie Delight - We ordered it with hard poached eggs, no dairy. It came with sautéed spinach, mushroom with roasted potatoes, thinly sliced toasted bread and a side of fresh fruits. Potatoes were little soggy but they seasoned it up perfectly and was flavorful. Overall impression: A small and cute hipster joint with locally sourced food that is incredibly understaffed, long waiting times and not the greatest service. My boyfriend and I came here for a bite to eat after reading all the great yelp reviews, we thought this little place was going to be a winner. And I wish I could give a detailed feedback on the food quality, but after waiting about an hour for our food, we had to leave. No one attended us for the first 10 minutes of arrival to grab our drinks order or food order. They had one server that was brand new, she was incredibly apologetic and apologized after realizing no one has attended us yet. After 15 minutes of arriving we finally got our drinks, simply just a glass of fresh orange juice, a coffee and a berry iced tea. And then the waiting game... after 45 minutes of nobody telling us where our food was or checking on us we left. The table that came 20 minutes after us were served food and we were just left out in the sun waiting. The only items I could review are the house brewed berry ice tea which wasn't bad, but teavana and David's tea are better choices. The fresh squeezed orange juice was alright, not too sweet and slightly tart. The coffee was typical diner coffee. After today, I probably wouldn't try this place again although their menu sounded fantastic their service was lousy and not worth it. read more

The marketing for this place (fresh/local/healthy ingredients) is borderline fraudulent once you see what they actually serve for dinner. Seafood that appeared to come from a can, and veggies that looked and tasted like they were from the frozen foods aisle of the local freshco. The back of house performance was subpar; poor use of spices/flavouring, bland side dishes and not a single "well at least the ____ was ok!" dish. To add insult to injury, front of house was nothing to write home about and pricing was criminal relative to the quality. Though we had high hopes, it seems Berry Hill falls into the 'jack of all trades, master of none' category that so often rings the death knell for similar establishments. I love the vibe of Berry Hill. The service was great and the low lighting set the mood for a romantic dinner with my boyfriend. I ordered the lamb shank with veggies and garlic mash and my boyfriend ordered the pot pie. My lamb was tasty, however I didn't love the gravy (or whatever brown liquid it was sitting in.) The garlic mash was not garlicky which makes me question if it even said it was garlic mash potatoes. There also weren't many vegetables. My boyfriend didn't rave about his pot pie either which he usually does. He said it was alright. We also had baked Brie as an app which was tasty but I felt like there was more cranberries and almonds on it than there was Brie. My boyfriend was looking forward to his creme brûlée dessert but unfortunately the waitress said it sold out earlier in the day. I feel like if your dessert menu is display on a small chalk board on the counter, it's easy enough to just erase the sold out items. We arrived on a Sunday morning to try this for the first time. It was early November, but it was very warm due to the sun in the front windows and very very small space. There are very few tables. They told us the wait would be about 20 minutes due to reservations, which was fine. They didn't mention the patio, which we would have taken, but then mentioned it to other people who came in after us. We saw seats at the "bar" but weren't sure we could just sit there, then they almost gave them away to others before we could ask if we could just sit there. We ordered smoothies. The food was excellent and everyone loved their breakfasts -- the banana french toast was amazing. I had the veggie delight which was pretty good too. The coffee was great, served in big cups (my favourite). Also thumbs up for the mimosas! Only give 4/5 stars because while the food and atmosphere was perfect, the service was just okay -- no one came back to refill water or coffee. This restaurant has all the potential to be a great spot for suburbia. Great food quality and fantastic value. Service is lacking, but not for lack of trying. The girls are kind but likely new or just inexperienced in the grand scheme of things. Although they are clearly in the middle of renovations, quick "cleans" throughout the service such as a floor sweep and prebussing will hide a lot of the construction because guests won't be looking around while waiting for food. Simple gestures of service such as staff topping up/pouring water seems like a minor detail but goes a long way.
