We came to stay here for the cantaloupe fest and trying to get our room was the most dramatic experience of my life. We got told to go to a million different places on the property and then we we were finally on track to find our room the owner of Berry Hill came up to us and told us the room we had booked was no longer available. She said that "an employee who no longer worked there" booked us in a room that isn't available for the weekend of the festival. She was incredibly condescending and was acting as if we did something wrong. They ended up putting us in a room that was much worse and smaller that the suite that we had booked. There was no apology for the mix up-- only the owner being rude and unkind towards us. You would think that she would want to make a good impression since this biggest weekend of the entire year for this resort. Besides our terrible check in experience, the hotel was nice. There were scratches on the floor but we had a nice balcony and big windows. We did find an ant in the bed though. read more

This "resort" is obviously geared toward wedding and events only. The hotel was completely booked for the weekend of the VIR races however also double booked Saturday with an outdoor party for 50+ with a DJ that was visible and audible for all resort attendees to hear and watch. Food service approved by what I was told were three cooks in a single kitchen facilitating the tavern, mansion dining room, catering and room service for all guests and event attendees plus locals coming in for just dinner. We waited over an hour each night for food at both Darbys and The Mansion. It appeared the private party took precedence over all hotel guests, even though they jacked the rate to $299 per night for race attendees over the weekend. So they charged a premium but then lacked the service of anything that should be called a resort. In addition the help(with the exception of the lovely gal at the front desk from 8am -8pm; and Cadence at Darby's), we're atrocious, short, rude, unprofessional, poorly attired, and completely untrained. House made special cocktails are made with Monin syrups instead of fresh ingredients. Bartenders have little to no experience in mixology and the menu and ingredients show. One kind but totally untrained and unskilled bartender was available in the "Mansion" dining area. Drinks were very slow, poorly executed, and no y in our party finished their first drink due to them being so sweet and artificial tasting from the use of fake syrups for juice. A bathroom is conveniently located next to our dining table so when each guest opened the door we would have a great view of the toilet they just used when they exited. Gross! Our waitress told us three times she would bring more bread, after 2:15 we never receive bread after being told three times we would. She disappeared because she didn't know what to say when the kitchen wasn't bringing our food. 4 adults and two kids sharing 4 entrees and three salads. Not a difficult task to execute. We inquired and were told 7 more minutes, after over an hour from when we ordered food. We were walking out after waiting an additional 15 minute to go to McDonalds before they closed, to walk into the bartender now bringing us out food because our waitress couldn't stop crying after being told she lied to us about the bread, disappeared a half hour ago and never came back and checked on us or gave us an update or explanation, and told me it wasn't her fault, they had no manager on site for the weekend and she was the only waitress(granted they only had 16 guests all night long in the dining room(and we were 6 of them)! She ended up discounting my friends bill 50% and mine only 30% claiming that's all she could do, even though the bartender who brought us food and apologized algae already told us we would get 1/2 off. It took her fussing at me in front of my daughter to get her to void the first charge and fix the bill. During this there were 4 employees sitting in the bar area talking about me and my friends. This had already occurred earlier with the bartender and my daughter and my friends daughter already overheard them talking poorly about us. We simply told our waitress we didn't want her to finally come back around to the table in another 20 minutes to find us all fine, so you need to call someone and explain we're leaving soon. She's 18 and very untrained and too much of a passive server to perform under any stress. Hiding in the bar was her answer to our disappointment. Now...to the rooms. First room was great, minus its one with no balcony and was $299 per night plus taxes and fees! Second nights room had a broken ironing board, old tv with lines going through it as you watched, and no apps for streaming. Not what you would expect for $299 a night! Then at 4:53pm the afternoon after we departed at 8am, they called me and were quite short about not having my credit card number to book the second night. I reluctantly gave them my card over the phone after already paying for the room when I checked in. Can't wait to see if I'm charged twice for the second night. Maybe having a wedding there is fine, but staying there will never ever happen again for my friends and I! My friends have stayed there the last three years for the race and they have nicknames it "Berry Hell" after this experience! read more

Three hours from home at 10PM on a Friday night, my wife and I found ourselves in the area unexpectedly without lodging after our accommodations at a local BnB fell through. On Yelp, this place looked almost too good to be true, as was the $129 rate we were offered over the phone. Blindly following our GPS on our way along the dark little country roads, we began to suspect some type of a con until we pulled into the long graveled, willow oak lined driveway with no lights in sight. Within a few seconds though we saw the dim glow of the mansion in the distance and followed the signs to the hotel tucked away behind it. It was somewhat of a surreal experience, as was our entire 14 hour stay which was equally delightful. As reported by fellow Yelpers, the accommodations were excellent. Our room was immaculate, tastefully decorated and well appointed. The canopied bed was very comfortable and my wife loved the extra little niceitites like the shampoo and bath soaps, bottled water and plush robes. Service was friendly and the continental breakfast was a step up from most. The sprawling and lush grounds were also wonderful as was the extensive estate tour provided by the delightfully knowledgeable Mr. Luck, a 17 year employee of the estate. We look forward to returning and trying out the incredible looking indoor lap pool and Darby's Tavern. It is a great weekend destination and a Gotta Try in my book! read more

I have never stayed in a hotel with such rude staff! Upon arrival no one knew what they were doing when checking me in, they completely messed up our wedding block, and not to mention if you ask any questions you get met with a ridiculous attitude. Now on to the rooms. Upon entering everything looks nice but the extra blankets were thrown into the cabinet and there are no over head lights. Which is fine when keeping with theme of course but some of our lamps didn't have freaking bulbs and the other just won't turn on! We also had to rent a fridge to keep our infants milk cold.... Not what you expect from a hotel you are paying $300+ dollars a night for. read more

I found the hallway to the room as being so cold. Also, the continental breakfast on Monday was the leftovers from Sunday. Quite sparse with a few green grapes and leftover bread from the previous day. Also, coffee empty and the coffee center near the front desk no cups available and empty coffee flask. We went here for our 30th anniversary!! It was wonderful!!! Entering on the long tree lined driveway was just like out of a movie! The room was so nice. We loved the balcony. It was fun to walk through the mansion and see all the history! We ate breakfast and dinner in the mansion restaurant. So worth it. The food was outstanding and Taylor, who was our waitress, was amazing. There is also a continental breakfast that was very good as well! We walked the grounds and saw the ruins. Thanksgiving Buffet. Matt Linley. Matt Linley was our Thanksgiving server, he said he was helping out as he normally works another area of the resort and what a blessing. He was such an amazing server! My husband and I throughly enjoyed talking to him throughout the course of our meal. We will be back to explore more of this local gem and a big reason is bc of him. In fact, everyone we came across was super nice. The food was fantastic. It was such a nice experience that I don't think many in our area even know about. They have several events that I have come across but not attended bc honestly I forget they are there. Just not somewhere I expect to find in that area. We actually came across it by driving around the backroads listening to music. The resort is gorgeous and they will give you a tour if you ask, we were given one without asking bc we just kinda stumbled in one day wondering what the world it was lol. I wish I would have had my wedding there! I will update after we stay a night and the weather is warmer. Def check out this resort. Go for brunch/lunch/dinner/drinks etc! We stayed at the resort this last Thursday-Sunday The place is absolutely beautiful, the rooms are fantastic, large, comfortable and clean. Most everyone working there seem to take pride in the place. The Darby Tavern is great, the food is incredible as well. Our only problem the entire time we're a group of the rudest , loud kids and parents. These kids were out of control. Many times we saw them running around alone. The toddler actually pushed me out of his way. (No parents in site at that time or many other times ). And Friday these kids were running the halls after midnight making noise. (1 a toddler and another very young girl). The parents and kids (4) made a total mess in the breakfast area and left it for the poor girl working. The parents actually walked out saying ...I guess we made enough of a mess for today‍. Sadly later we found out that these people were related to the owner of the resort. I would stay again if that family was not there. I feel like this place is a hidden GEM. read more

I stayed here on a work trip and I'll say, not too shabby of a place to stay for work! The rooms are beautiful - the entire room reminded me of my yellow elizabeth Vera Bradley bag, very preppy, very old school, and very huge! I had a room with an outside porch with two rocking chairs and I was out there every night with a book, just relaxing. I didn't get to explore the property much (as I wasn't here on vacation) but from what I saw it was beautiful. The free continental breakfast is nothing to write home about (very very limited selection and stale looking muffins and bagels) so don't count on eating breakfast here. Also, on the second night I found 2 ants in my room, so that kind of sucked (I am not great with ants/bugs so 2 ants is a big deal to me) but in the end I really liked the charm of this place and it was seriously the most relaxing hotel I had ever stayed in for work. Just FYI, my cell phone reception was horrible (AT&T) and my other coworkers receptions were bad too (Sprint and Verizon). We concluded that no cell phone provider has good service here so prepare to skype, call people through your gchat, or spend money on outgoing calls. Wifi is free though, so if you really need to talk to someone, it's do-able. read more

For the value I think the price point is fair because the prime rib was delicious.I would recommend to others with a few pointers like not allowing the guy at the waffle station to touch the waffles with his bare hands. I also recommend bringing all food into the Orangery and out of the hallway. The best part was sharing this meal with my mom and mother in love. We were able to tour the grounds as well. read more

We went to Sunday brunch, and the Southern hospitality did not disappoint. Friendly staff and the delicious crispy chicken, biscuit and gravy with a poached egg on top was a delight . Ok, so I've had over a year-long relationship with Berry Hill. And, like most relationships, it was peppered with many ups and downs, surprises, and aggravations. But now that it's all over, I can look back and reflect on what we had in a positive light and say that my life is ultimately a little fuller thanks to BH. I chose the estate as my wedding venue. I randomly found it while searching for spots in Raleigh and I was totally blown away by the stunning architecture and the remote peace and quiet it suggested. They have something like 92 guest rooms, so all my guests could stay on site. The mansion is the most beautiful backdrop to a ceremony. And the dining hall is all class (none of those gaudy chandeliers or oriental carpeting you see in many modern hotels): soft backlighting, hardwood floors, and a fireplace. Perfect for my November wedding! The first of many hurdles came in dealing with the staff. We were first working with John, who stood us up on our initial meeting. Never mind we'd drove an hour and a half to the site, but just the thought of that level of disorganization made me all queasy. John quit just a few weeks later and on our next drive out we met with the then-manager. He tried to put us and my parents at ease and graciously offered Phil and I a free stay so we could experience it first-hand. We took him up on the offer and had an excellent time. The rooms (with their canopy beds and sleek hardwoods) are to die for. The chef's food is exquisite. We were back on board. But the manager got fired. Meanwhile, a new wedding coordinator was hired. Rhonda turned out to be wonderfully organized and great to work with. We had a little trouble ironing out a contract (getting what John had quoted us originally), but in the end everything worked out well. Rhonda was brilliant the day of and even after, helping route our final contract to us and fix a few hiccups there. Most of the staff I encountered was great: the gal at the front desk who phoned each of my guests to make sure they received their welcome bag (when another front desk person accidentally overlooked the task); the tour guide; the fella who ran ice up to my room; our server in the dining hall. The worst part about BH was probably when it came time to check in and to leave...MANY of my guests had their rooms confused or their checks messed up. The problems were all finally resolved, but I think BH should have been more proactive to right them (and should look into better ways of managing reservations so it doesn't happen in future). BH has a pool table, a tavern, extensive grounds, workout center, indoor pool, a spa. Truly, it's amazing. My guests are STILL raving about what a beautiful and unique spot it is. I really hope they can get their act together with the customer service blips as it's such a special place. And I hope to be returning many anniversaries to come! read more

You be the judge. I was given a room in the basement with bug. I had to go get a broom to clean them up. After cleaning up the bugs. I got in bed and it broke. Before you say it, I'm not that big. I was told we got the last room. They where sold out. I would remove the one star, but the night person came on and was so understanding, kind and was willing to assist us. Thank God for him. We stayed here overnight in January 2020. The rooms are huge and loved the 4 poster bed and balcony. There are towel warmers in the bathroom. All of this in the hotel part. Mr Luck a Lifelong resident of the town gives great historical tours. All the staff is accommodating and friendly. The main house blew my mind. It's huge. I don't love the colors they decorated the parlor/bar in but it is beautiful. The main house bedrooms are huge and in keeping w the period. The mansionettes outside are like mini apartments. For a plantation, this place is alright. It is Huge! The rooms are partially updated, and the grounds are well landscaped. The front desk is fairly unhelpful/unwelcoming. Don't expect them to help you down with your dolly full of luggage unless you demand it. The also will not tell you the hotel's amenities, spa locations, or how to get to your room unless asked. Over $400 of fraud. What an embarrassing excuse for a hotel. Smokers beware. It seems like this huge hotel makes their money off of bogus smoking in room fees. We're cellphone tower climbers and if we smoked in a room we don't have a problem paying the fee. What is so upsetting is that we never smoked in the room. There is also a balcony and we were told by the front desk boy that we were fine to smoke on the balcony. We were hit not once but twice for smoke cleaning fees. If you smoke or smell like smoke DO NOT COME HERE. This is honestly outrageous and it is so sad that a nice hotel like this is taking advantage of TOWER CLIMBERS-in this middle of nowhere town, so THEY can have cell service. No one has time for this. My fiancé and I booked the "romance" package for Labor Day weekend. We paid extra for a "mansionette", a freestanding suite that sits on the main circle driveway. The day before we were to arrive, the staff called to tell me the mansionette was being repaired and that they had moved us to their honeymoon suite. Perfectly fine with us. The package included champagne and a cheese plate upon arrival, a three-course dinner in their formal dining room and an after-dinner drink. The cheese and champagne were delivered promptly to our room and were delicious. The three-course dinner was great with wonderful food and service. Every staff person we encountered, from housekeeping , to the groundskeeper to the front desk was lovely: kind, helpful and friendly. We felt welcome and appreciated. Also, we are a same-sex couple, so I did inquire whether the resort is gay -friendly. They are. The Carrington Suite was huge and full of antique or replica furnishings. Some of it needs attention, like refinishing, due to stains and heavy use. But, it's beautiful. The bathroom is huge--the size of some hotel rooms--and there is a den with a small flat screen tv. It's comfortable, but not luxurious. Some things need attention. The duvet cover and pillow shams were stained and we asked to have them replaced. Housekeeping quickly changed them but acknowledged that the replacements were also stained, but clean. The new duvet cover was also frayed. They simply need replacing. Other linens were fresh and clean. The room itself needs a good cleaning--under furniture and behind the bed but otherwise is in decent shape. The room is part of an historic building, so it's important to keep that in mind. The grounds are beautiful. This was a lovely quick and relaxing getaway for us. We will most certainly come back. read more

An old plantation turned resort, this place has a lot of land to roam around. There is a mansion with rooms to rent and a few mini mansions, but they also have a standard hotel room building as well. They have a separate building with a pool and work out room and tennis courts outside. On premise restaurant is a nice option if you don't want to drive into the city. The rooms are nice but there is no screen on the door leading to the deck so you can't really keep the door open to enjoy the nice weather. The chairs outside can be weathered as well so be careful if you sit on them (I did break a board on one of the chairs). Cell service is spotty and the free wifi is just as spotty if not worse. The TV is a little old too with no HD channels. A nice place to stay if you are looking to get away but not so much if you are staying here for work. They do have a free continental breakfast too which is nice. read more

The rooms and property were gorgeous and very clean, but they didn't have a fridge or microwave in room thankfully we had a cooler. Staff I met was all nice and very helpful and we had fun our night there. Darbys Tavern was a good upbeat place to eat, some of my food was great my SO got shrimp stir fry stuff and for the price you think they would at least serve fresh vegetables not frozen. When you pay $80 for 2 people to eat you expect a certain amount of quality, wasn't to impressed. If you eat in the Mansion restaurant it's SAME KITCHEN AND CHEF, some items are on both menus but in Mansion price is $10-$20 more for SAME FOOD. The pool was nice but womens sauna wouldn't work, I was looking forward to it but nope. Before leaving I went to have a $50 manicure the nail tech was great super nice and did a good job, but they didn't have dryers so nails I was told were dry where not. My soak, quik rub, lotion, and ,nail polish was already way overpriced and also ruined within an hour because they don't have nail dryers, ridiculous, they can be purchased for $10 on amazon. I would return but nit to the spa or to ear at restaurants there, not worth what you pay. read more

Great selection of food, but I heard that they had more variety in the past but had to cut back. Overall, the Berry Hill estate is a great place to go to. It's a great place to play pool! I happened upon the Berry Hill Resort by chance, and I'm so glad I did! I needed a place to stay for the night, and the rate was reasonable, however, what I got was incredible. The room was spacious, clean, and up-to-date with a large desk, tv (although I can't imagine why you turn it on), a coffee maker, bath robes, and a balcony complete with rockers. The staff were friendly and helpful. The buildings and grounds are breathtaking. You don't need for me to go into detail, just take a look at the photos. There is an indoor pool that is not your run-of-the-mill hotel pool. It is quite large and in a building that is clean and inviting. There are saunas next to the pool as well as a small fitness center. There is a spa (although it was under renovation when I stayed), and an outdoor amphitheater. There are two restaurants - Darby's Tavern (see separate review for Darby's - spoiler alert: 5 stars) and the Mansion Dining Room, and conference and event space. Trails to hike and bikes to ride, and tennis courts too, oh my! The Berry Hill Resort would be a wonderful weekend get-away on its own, and it's just a short drive to South Boston, VA where I saw cafes, restaurants, and shops along Main Street as I drove through. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I'll be back myself. read more

Was taken their for my 40th birthday by wife and two kids. We decided to upgrade to the cottage for $100 extra a night but switched back after we saw it was filthy and spider infested. Our room was much nicer and saved $200. Room was nice and clean compared to the cottage and nicely furnished. Berry Hill is amazing architecture at it's best: marble inside and out, 3 foot thick walls, just massive. We ate dinner at the Tavern which was unimpressive at best. My ribeye sandwich was half edible, but hushpuppies made up for it. Dinner at the estate was cool setting. So much history that you felt you were in the 1850's. Our server was new and we had a party of 12. She forgot 3 meals which ruined the experience for some. I will pay $30 all day for a good steak but my filet was sad and that is being polite. There was a wedding going on so I will cut them a break because they were understaffed I guess. Brunch was amazing. 1st class all the way, like a different place. Brunch and the tour were top notch. If this place got it's service act together, it could be something else. The grounds were nicely maintained but again rooms could have been cleaned better, more staff, and more attention to detail would have made this perfect. My husband and I just can't say enough good things about Berry Hill Resort. The grounds are beautifully manicured with acre upon acre in which to walk or bike. We've visited twice so far this summer and hope to visit again very soon. Our room on our first stay was very clean, and surprisingly private. The view from the balcony overlooked the lush, green rolling hills of this historic site. On our second stay, we spent the night in the Jefferson Suite, which is separate from the main lodging area. Total privacy and comfort in a smaller architectural version of the mansion. I must say though, the very best part of our stay was the amazing staff, always there to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying our stay. Kudos to Paris, front office staff, for your cheery helpfulness. Also to Dianna, front office manager. You went above and beyond by giving us a walking tour through the mansion and the grounds. The food and libations at Darby's Tavern topped it all off. Thanks to Wanda, tavern supervisor, for catering to us... Total deliciousness! We hope to see you again very soon! read more

What a fantastic venue for an event. The rooms are very comfortable with four poster beds. Drinks in Darby's is a must. Take the tour or walk around the estate at nighttime. This was at one time a working plantation so there a good blend of very old historic architecture with new. read more

At first it was nice, the initial waitress and waiter that were taking care of our party were wonderful. We had about 12 people in our party and we all ordered our food at the same time. The food was brought out to two people at a time and by the time they brought more everyone was finished (about every 10 minutes). The girl bringing the food out was extremely rude, asked us if we needed anything else and when we asked for butter and jelly for biscuits and a drink refill, she scoffed and said okay, brought out the jelly and forgot the drink and the butter, asked us "anything else?" in a very annoyed tone. We said yes, the sweet tea and the butter, and she rolled her eyes and complained that she was tired had been there until 3 am the night before. As concerned as all of us were about her schedule (not!!), we weren't getting a discount for her shitty service or cold food. On top of her piss poor attitude, she never even brought the drink refill. Six people ordered veggie omelettes, they all came out burnt with nothing but onions and peppers. No cheese, no tomatoes, no mushrooms, no spinach...if we wanted burnt scrambled eggs with onions and peppers we would have ordered that. The hash browns were cold and raw and we didn't get butter for the biscuits until they were cold. It isn't like we were paying McDonald's prices either. I've worked in the service industry I know it can be difficult when you get busy, but there was one other table there, not to mention we were all on one ticket and had reservations in advance. We planned our brunch there because the last time we were in town we had a wonderful experience, our servers name was Wanda and we were hoping to see her again, we were told she wasn't there anymore, and what a shame! I hosted a sales training at the Berry Hill for a small group of Reps from the mid-west, Florida and New England. Berry Hill offered the complete experience thus eliminating the need to load everyone in a van and drive to a restaurant off-site. All participants were very impressed with the rooms, very clean and very nice. The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were quiet. We started our dining at Darby's the first night, very good quality "bar food", fresh and well prepared. Breakfast the next morning was in the mansion, excellent. Our lunches were served so we could work thru out lunch. Both days we over-ate, and it was wonderful. Our second dinner was on the main floor and the menu offered an excellent selection. The wine list was well thought out, and of course the bar was well stocked. My goal was to have the Reps leave the meeting with our product concepts well entrenched and a memorable setting. To date, both goals have been achieved. The only tick in the unsatisfied column is the cell service is spotty. This is not the fault of Berry Hill, but the cell providers. The grounds offered plenty of walking opportunities, and the pool, which we did not use, and tennis courts were available. We are planning our annual sales meeting for 2017 at Berry Hill. They set the bar pretty high, but I am confident that Patsy and her team can meet our expectations. read more
