This farm has been operating in their current location since 1850. There simply isn't anything that will be able to replace the experience you could have here not to mention nowhere else seems to have boiled peanuts anywhere close to as good as the ones they offered here. This location of their roadside farm produce stand is probably the nearest of the several Becnel fruit stands/markets to the actual farm as it is pretty much on the farm with all the citrus trees around it. They have some general selection of fresh produce and locally produced food items as the other locations but it is nice to see where a lot of the citrus and other produce originates from. This is a nice little road trip to take and see some of the rural areas outside of the urban spaces of Greater New Orleans. I've had the privilege of having all my lifetime 'til now being able to enjoy Becnel farms produce stands and I don't know how to even envision a future where they no longer exist. They had some small satsumas (also in short supply this year). But the standouts were fall crop tomatoes and a gorgeous large cauliflower. The tomatoes were perfect for Thanksgiving day and I made a caprese salad for the table. And I roasted the cauliflower with olive oil, salt, pepper and parmesan... then dressed with a little lemon juice and parsley. DELICiOUS! I did not find my kumquats and the prices were higher than I expected but the quality was excellent so I'm not complaining. Small stand just before the Belle Chasse Bridge in a shell lot!

I made our reservations online, easy peasy. The drive took about 45 minutes from New Orleans and it was easy to find with GPS. There is plenty of places to park, buckets are provided and they start promptly at 8:00am. If you want blackberries, arrive early! Blueberries are plentiful! We had 2 adults, a 12 year old and a 2 year old. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we came back 2 weeks later. We picked for about 2 hours, took a break and had a picnic at one of the picnic tables provided. We fed horses with biscuits that the farm has on hand, for free. Then we picked for a little longer. While there, we genuinely felt welcome by the owner and his daughter who were sweet and happy to share their bounty. We took home blackberries, zucchini, peppers, beans, honey, a ton of blueberries and priceless memories. We look forward to next year!

Tucked inside is their bánh mì spot--the Vietnamese po-boy--and baby... it's a staple. Open daily, and you'll usually catch the same sweet older woman back there faithfully whipping out sandwiches like clockwork. It's something about that consistency and care that just hits different. They're under new management now and the space got a little upgrade, so I'm not sure if everything is exactly the same menu-wise, but my go-to has always been the one with meatballs--and I ALWAYS add extra pâté. That pâté? Don't skip it. The bread is exactly what it needs to be. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside... not too hard, not too soft. Perfect balance. Prices went up just a little, but honestly? For about $7, you're getting a full, loaded sandwich that eats like a meal and then some. Still one of my favorite quick eats. Every time I'm in there, I'm grabbing one.
