So imagine my disappointment when last October I went hunting for an apple orchard in the greater Cincinnati area only to discover every single one had sold out of u-pick apples by the end of the first weekend of the month. Um, what?! So this year I was determined to get my apple picking in, even if that meant going in the second week of September. Which I did, right here at Monnin Fruit Farm. This place is out in the country as it should be and has a great variety of apples to choose from. When we went, the honey crisp were already nearly gone, but they'd just opened up the winesap rows. We got some of everything, from Fuji to golden delicious to macintosh. You buy by the half bushel or the bushel; prices aren't posted but this year the half bushel is $20. Cash or check only! Be sure to check out the store as well. On our way out we grabbed a dozen free range eggs, some apple butter and a bag of toffee. They've also got local milk, meat products and other produce. Monnin gets high marks for 1) actually having apples, 2) posting u-pick information on Facebook, 3) their awesome store and 4) knowledgeable staff. Minus one star for a confusing map/flag system for identifying apple varieties, and only two sizes for buying apples. Didn't really need a whole half bushel but you can bet I filled that bag! Would be nice to pay by weight or have a smaller size. Overall, this place scratched my apple-picking itch. Great way to kick off fall. Now, who's ready for apple pie?

I was so happy to see Delicata squash - my favorite! I also got a bag of ginger gold apples ($5.75) - very happy to see them, as they are hard to find. There's candy, and locally made pumpkin bread. What I love most? That everything is grown or made locally. I absolutely can get behind that. Highly recommended! They are open from late May through sometime in November. They are open every Saturday morning May to November from 7 am to noon, But don't arrive at noon or you will be disappointed. As their website says, with over 20 different vendors, they have fresh and organic fruits and vegetables from many different local farms. They also have organic meat, cheeses, and eggs. There are fresh baked goods and even a few great gluten free vendors!! They have local honey, local maple syrup, and even a place for fresh cut flowers. My personal favorites are the organic and local veggies, local honey, Flying Mouse local maple syrup, and the organic bacon. Once, I got some organic ham too and it was amazing!!! For people with food allergies - Lots of gluten free products. You will be amazed! Plus some free samples. You'd never know they were gluten free. I wish I could remember the name of the vendor, but one of my favorites has a completely gluten free kitchen because she has Celiac disease, so no cross contamination issues!!! For people with pet allergies, be careful. There are almost always people who bring their dogs. Also don't miss Yellow Springs Winter Farmers market - not as many vendors or variety but still worth the trip! Tips: Go early!!! You won't get the bacon or the pick of the produce if you go late.
