After living in our apartment without any issues for years, the brick wall in our bedroom suddenly…read morestarted to let in a strange smell through the many cracks and tiny holes. The brick wall is directly against the wall of a neighboring high-rise building, so we did not have a lot of flexibility as to what we were allowed to do. We could not re-point the entire wall, so Ahmed selectively scraped around all of the holes and refilled them with new mortar. Another challenge was that we had no idea what the brick wall had originally been sealed with over twenty years ago. So Ahmed tested a couple of nontoxic sealers on the wall to see what would work. Then he sealed the wall with two thick coats, letting the first coat dry for over 24 hours before putting on the second coat. There were a lot of challenges with this project and Ahmed listened to our concerns and provided us with solutions for our particular situation. He was kind, calm, polite, and communicative, always texting to confirm appointments and letting us know when he was en route. He worked quickly and diligently and was a stickler for quality and precision. It was a pleasure working with him. We will not hesitate to hire Ahmed again in the future, and I would highly recommend him to everyone!

The work took 7 work days for ~500 square feet, and the whole process took ~2.5 weeks from when I first messaged to when they finished. I messaged through Yelp on a Saturday, and Daniel called me back on the Monday. Jack came out to provide an estimate the next day, and he brought samples of polished concrete so I could pick a color. He gave me two quotes: one for removing the vinyl and just polishing and one for also pouring self-leveling concrete and polishing that. The estimates were competitive with quotes I had received from others, and he sent them through Quickbooks within hours of meeting. We decided that they would remove the existing floor first so we could get a sense of what just polishing that would look like. They also provided a COI promptly once we decided on this plan. Jack had a three-man crew come out the following Monday. They arrived everyday from 9 am to 9:15 am. Within an hour, they had ripped up the baseboards and vinyl floor. The concrete underneath had bubbles, large cracks, inconsistent coloring, and a large stain from previous water damage. The foreman, Alberto, suggested they just pour new concrete, and I agreed. We got Jack on the phone and went ahead with that plan. The crew did a great job putting up plastic to protect the walls and the limited furniture I had in the unit. They also put up plastic in the building hallways and carefully disposed of all debris. And 7 workdays later, the floor looks great! Would definitely call up Concrete Care again for any remodeling that fits their skills. For reference, the four photos are of (1) the living room before removing the vinyl, (2) the living room after removing the vinyl, (3) the completed living room, and (4) the concrete samples in the living room before the work.

On Saturday August 4, 2012 I met with Joseph Battaglia, the owner of J.B. Custom Masonry & Concrete…read moreregarding an estimate for some masonry work that needed to be done on my house. I explained to him that we were in the process of selling the house and that the purchaser had requested that some repairs be made as per the inspection report. The repairs were minimal in nature such as filling in some loose mortar on the front steps and repairing some concrete that had separated. Mr. Battaglia insisted that more work needed to be done including some brick work. I explained to him that we did not want to do more than was requested by the purchaser and there was no mention of brick work in the inspection report. He insisted that the work needed to be done and quoted me an estimate of $2,800. I did not appreciate Mr. Battaglia's arrogance in telling me what needed to be done and since a previous contractor had quoted me an estimate of $1,000 for the work, I therefore had no intention of hiring Mr. Battaglia for anything. On Monday August 6, 2012 a work crew of six men from J.B. Custom Masonry showed up at my house unannounced prepared to begin work. I explained to them that I had only requested an estimate and did not authorize them to begin work and requested that they leave the premises immediately. I never requested that any work be performed on my property by J.B. Custom Masonry either verbally or in writing. On August 13, 2012 I received by certified mail a notification that a Mechanic's Lien had been filed against my property in the amount of $1,700. This would have to be satisfied prior to closing in order to have a clean title. I have never received an invoice from J.B. Custom Masonry for any alleged work that was performed. This is nothing more than an extortion attempt on the part of Mr. Battaglia, attempting to get me to pay for work that was not requested nor performed. I strongly recommend not doing business with this company.
