I rented a Korg keyboard for a Luau. My musician had never played a Korg before and he was delighted with the instrument as were all the party guests. In addition the keyboard cost me $45 for a week. Guitar Center charges $89 per day for a similar Yamaha keyboard plus $89 deposit. The Korg came with a stand, a sustain pedal and even a stool. The Yamaha did not. And the people working at Bertrand's were just wonderful. They specialize in band instruments for students. read more

VERY COVID safe!!! I was extremely impressed with Bertrand's COVID precautions. I called before entering to see if they were wearing masks and the very nice employee told me they wore masks and took everyone's temperature. When I mentioned that I was high-risk, he said he would wear gloves for me! In front of the register, they also had plexiglass. The employee told me they're doing a UVC sanitation on all instruments. It was $20 upfront for the UVC sanitation and instrument repair estimate. At the time, I was the only customer in the store and there were 2 employees (I only interacted with one though). They had all the horns off the wall, I'm assuming because they don't want people testing them out right now. I felt very safe here. I'm so glad I can support a horn specific store and a store that takes COVID so seriously. I'm very happy with them so far. Will update my review when I get my trombone back next week. UPDATE & REVIEW OF SERVICES: WOW! This place is so fast! I got my estimate the next day and my horn was done like 2 days later. I have a Bach Strad tenor trombone (and high quality horn) and it was sounding airy and terrible because the sleeve needed re-saudered (due to an accident from way back in high school ). They re-saudered it and replaced the disintegrated spit valve cork. Now it sounds great! Will definitely return and recommend to others. read more

Took my concert to them for repair of a damaged lead pipe. They shot me straight on what needed to be done, and did a fantastic job for a fair price (my music instructor agreed). The pipe is now good as new, and works beautifully. Will certainly be going back to them again. read more

The reason Bertrand's Music works is because it is run by people whose last name is Bertrand. Their company values were passed on from their dad, John Bertrand, who was a band director, and the very top priority is that the customer comes first. Making a profit from each client or potential client is unimportant when compared to making sure that every person leaves satisfied that they were treated well. We brought in my son's Cornet which needed some pretty significant repairs. We got it back a few weeks later (exactly when promised) playing and sounding beautiful. The staff, obviously wants to restore each instrument to it's highest potential... which doesn't always line up with my budget lol. The great thing here is, that it's not "all or nothing"... you can discuss your unique situation and instrument's needs and come up with a plan to get it playable for significantly less than the full overhaul. It's a 1960's american made horn with huge sentimental value to my family... it was important that anyone tearing into it be the best... and that's what we found here. Customer for life. read more

I recently had my Muramatsu flute and Hammig piccolo in for a COA. It had been two years and six months since my last COA with Mike Cleveland. He did another wonderful job. Repairs are extremely professional and well done, very receptive to my requests. Technician Gabe Eaton went above and beyond the call of duty when I came by with a small fix request, and performed an amazing tune up to make sure my horn was as perfect as possible without going over my budget. I would seriously recommend this place for any of your saxophone repair needs. Sales wise they have a really good selection of professional yamahas and Yanis and even a couple good condition mark 6 altos that I was pleasantly surprised to see. EDIT 2/25/2016: A recent experience having my horn fixed here left me wanting. I wasn't too impressed with the service. I contacted the repairman, who was happy to fix it, but I live over an hour away so I couldn't just pop back in. The repairs were acceptable, not great, and it appears my man Micah has left. They're still a good shop but not worth the long drive anymore. Original review, from a few years ago: Just had my horn fixed (t. sax) and it's as great as ever. Micah worked on it, and he was so excellent. Most techs just replace pads, springs, etc. But not Micah, he exercises the craftsmanship to make the horn play as great as it can. Pad cup seating, spring tension, etc. was all changed to put it in ship-shape, not to mention the pad replacements, balancing, lubrication, etc. done. Absolutely top-notch. The rest of the staff was friendly, accommodating, helped me in trying out several dozen mouthpieces for alto and tenor. I didn't find anything I wanted, but that wasn't for lack of selection. I'm just spoiled with great equipment and have become real picky. They also had a great selection of new and vintage instruments of all price ranges. I am happy to make the drive down from Long Beach and would recommend anyone else do the same. read more

Bertrand's Music was great in helping us get a last minute flute repair during band camp. Mike was quick to point out (and fix!) a few other bent keys that my son had missed. The repair was done quickly. They sanitize and bag the flute upon returning, as well. Marching band is brutal on instruments, so we are thankful to have Mike helping to keep instruments in tip-top shape! Amazing service! My daughter decided to take up violin recently. We rented a violin for nine months to take advantage of a deal they are having. About three weeks into the rental, one of the strings broke during a tuneup process at home. This was on a Saturday night and my daughter couldn't stop crying. I went on the chat feature and someone actually was able to help me ON A SATURDAY NIGHT! They got in touch with someone at the store and arranged for a quick repair on Monday morning, free of charge! My experience with Horn Improvement was thankfully very much worth the near-two hour trip to get there. (Southbound LA traffic on a Friday afternoon is a B****!!!) I wish I could give it 41/2 stars, because the only things separating it from a 5 star review are very minor. One, the is the distance was a pain in the nether regions (which isn't really their fault, though I like thinking of the universe with me at the epicenter). Two, I wish they had a slightly larger selection of vintage horns (but I'm spoiled by specialized vintage horn shops in LA). But these are extra-fine hairs that I'm splitting--these guys are as good as advertised. I spoke with Ted via phone about selling a vintage horn on consignment and restoring another horn of mine, and he was not only helpful but very much a horn-geek like me; geeking out about ancient model lines and current horn feature sets is indeed one of life's fullest simple pleasures. And though they have a relationship with Hollywood Winds, I got zero hard-sell from him about it. After the aforementioned long-a** drive made much longer by traffic, I met with one of their brilliant techs, Micah. Again, these guys know their stuff, period. After looking over both horns and chatting with me about pads, resonators, neck pulldown, brass/body-chemistry interaction and other pre-requisite horn-geek conversation, I felt fully comfortable with using them for any of my restoration or maintenance needs. And while they didn't have a lot of sexy stuff on the sax wall, what they did have was top quality. They even let me blow a bit well after official closing time without so much as a rude glance. So in that light I'll fork over the extra star--it's hard for them to get much better, short of taking out a new lease on a place, say, about 40 miles North... read more

Let me just say, that there is a reason I make the hour and a half drive out to Mission Viejo just to get my saxophones looked at by Mike Cleveland. I have tried many repair techs from Long Beach, to San Dimas, to Downtown LA and no one can hold a light to Mike. He has been looking at my Yamaha EX Alto for over 4 years now and has made sure that the intonation is always perfect, the key Heights have been adjusted, and some of the keywork has also been adjusted to fit me perfectly, and trust me I'm picky. Even when he switches some of the pads, he always uses the same pads that my saxophone has. I bought my Selmer Series II Baritone used and took it to him right away when I realized it only played 2 notes. Let's just say my horn is flawless now! And like I said I am picky!!! Tension on the springs are all exactly the same and he even fixed this very annoying and pesky whisper sound it was making when switching from a G to an A because of the octave mechanism. This horn had keywork and posts that where beyond bent and it looks like it's brand new now. Not only did he fix it up then when I first got it, but I accidentally dropped it once and got the bell and body bent completely, yet here I am with a GREAT working saxophone and a beautiful sound. He even fitted both of my horns for key clamps. I love the guys over at Horn Improvement. I'm very picky about my saxophones, but I also admit that I overuse them so I go here often to tune ups. All the guys in the repair room already know me and even the guys in the front already know me and say hi and welcome me when I come back. How many times have I heard "getting your Bari looked at again?!?" Love these guys. They are also quick on offering to order me mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds that I want to try or buy. DEFINITELY LOVE THIS PLACE! Very knowledgeable staff and Mike is a heck of a repairman. I know a lot of pros go to him as well as college music majors. Thumbs up to Bretrand's! read more

The staff is very helpful and friendly and has always helped me find what I've been looking for. Years ago when I needed to rent a cello I was pleased with how easy it was (they came to the school), and the experience was the same when my brother rented a violin (and later a glockenspiel). Consistently my family has always gotten good service here, and I recommend the place to anyone who needs to rent or buy an instrument. More recently I attended one of the monthly ukulele circles the store puts on, which is what finally sold me on writing a review. My ukulele was purchased from the store on a recommendation and when I heard about the circle I thought it sounded like fun. I was certainly not disappointed. As promised, Corissa put on a fun, engaging, encouraging, and informative hour of uke playing, basically like a free lesson but with the added bonus of community. Highly recommend checking out the circle, especially if you don't have experience playing but want to get introduced to it! They post the event to Facebook, so it's easy to tell when the next one takes place (and it's definitely worth it). read more

What a great place for instrument supplies and repairs. I have taken my French horn to Bertrand's AKA Horn Improvement for years with great results....never a repair that wasn't complete or that I had to take back. Seems my horn always breaks a string before a concert. I took my horn in today without an appointment told them that I needed it back for sure within 48 hours for a concert, and the representative said that if I wait for it a few minutes, he would get it done right away. Sure enough, 15 minutes later my horn was done and works fine. They can charge a rush fee if they are really busy, but it's well worth the extra $35.00 for a rush. A great place to do business.....quality merchandise and quality repairs, and people that seem like they care! read more

Jacob Bertrand and his entire staff deserve way more than 5 stars, but that is all that Yelp will let me give them! I am a local violin and viola private instructor, and while we were selling our home, Bertrands Music was able to let me use one of their fantastic teaching studios, even thought they have a very busy music studio with lots of teachers. They never made me feel like I was a bother, but instead, they treated me like family. Even the other private instructors stopped in to say hello. While I was there, I was also able to stop by and check out their string wall, which has some fantastic instruments for purchase. Came here to rent a cello for my son--4th grader. I really like the nice and knowledgeable people her. Robert was willing to work with us and help us get the right cello for my son. I'm really happy they treated us like people, and not like a number. Yes, I'm referring to The Guitar Center, where it is messy, crowded and hardly anyone knows much about the instruments out on the floor. My son had a performance at the Segerstrom Center and due to miscommunication he had no french horn for his performance in 3 hours. In a panic, we rushed to Bertrand's in hopes that they would be able to assist. Mackenzie and Keith both searched through their inventory and were able to find my son a horn. Keith quickly made sure that the horn was fully tuned and had a mouthpiece ready. We were on our way to the Segerstrom within minutes. During this tough time of our social distancing when Bertrand's locations are closed, Joel Bertrand went out of his way to remain accessible to clients and customers by keeping efficient correspondence up via e-mail. I share my praise and appreciation for the Bertrand's (both online service as of now and our local, home store of Mission Viejo). First of all, I have only ever written a review on one business and it was an awful terrible experience in Monterey. However, I would like to write a review on Bertrand's because they are the ONLY people in 17 states that have been able to help me. Long story about my project but I wrote to them late one evening and had a response the next morning. The emailing went back and forth with Joel who I'm sure had better things to do than figure out my needs. I couldn't believe the effort and time Joel put into helping me while getting nothing in return. Since I live in Mission Viejo he put me in touch with Mike from that store. I stopped by yesterday and could not believe how nice and friendly these people are!!! TRULY I also found out a friend of mine takes his trumpets here for service all the time. Since I dropped in unannounced Mike dropped what he was doing to come and meet me. He is putting together what I need and said he'd call when convenient for me to come back by. I travel 3 weeks out of each month all over the USA for work and I only wish that Bertrand's level of service, friendliness was practiced by other businesses. I've seen a few instruments people have rented from here and they are substandard. The latest one has a bridge that is BROKEN (literally missing pieces). The renter of this instrument told me they got one month free rent because they had "problems" with the previous rentals, and had to switch them out THREE times. I'll tell you that the instruments I see from this place are SUB STANDARD. What a shame. The world is full of crappy instruments, and it's a real shame :( ++++++++++++++++++ Reply to Owner's message -- I get the sense that this owner really wants to do things right, and probably believes in his employees. But honestly, things are NOT right. The latest replacement instrument has a bridge that is cut wrong, and it's possible to play 3 strings at once, without tilting the bow. The strings are also too close to the fingerboard, and thus buzz against it when even the 1st finger is pressed down. I recommend the owner takes a handful of instruments to another reputable instrument repair shop and have them evaluate it to check up on the skills of his crew. read more

This place is very enlightening for me. The staff are friendly and helpful for my satisfaction. Everything was nicely displayed and organized for any customers to see. I brought my alto saxophone to undergo a complete overhaul, and receiving after a week of repair... It played excellent! They even said that there was a 90 day warranty, if anything wrong were to happen to my sax. The prices for the repair were high for those who don't know much about instrument repairs, but you have to understand the level of detail and experience the staff has in order to fix your instrument. $250 for labor with no major work done. A small solder on a loose part, some pad tweaks and replaced a few, plus a neck cork change. They may be one of the few music repair stores in SoCal but dadamnnn. The service is ok meaning they are mostly cordial but then they don't listen to directions nor are they that great with questions, a bit standoffish. Guess that's what happens when you expect the yelp five star service. I expressly requested they keep all parts, followed it up with a phone call reiterating this request yet they still tossed out my original pads from my pro super serie II selmer sax. I haven't played for awhile and was trying to start a convo to get some germane tips and felt as if the enthusiasm wasn't there. Or possibly my inquiries were too basic to bother with their time. They didn't really take the time to show me exactly what they did. I'm pretty sure I won't be going back for repairs here. Again the experience was lackluster kinda like when you shop at best buy you feel as if there are workers there but they don't really help too much. read more
