This store is broken up into two big rooms. The one towards the left is more upscale gift like. You will find lotions, cards, kitchen gadgets and candles/soaps. While it is a bit pricey, I love the local and well curated feel. They have nice candies and snacks from Asheville and some great natural products. Some old fashioned soda in the back for hot summer days. The right side is more your everyday stuff and traditional general store items. You will find actual hardware, command strips, soil, birdseed and leaning supplies. The front has cute games and books. Again, check the prices as some are quite fair (I got birdseed and a birdfeeder for the cat that costs similar to Amazon prices) but some can be high. Other random info- They also do handiwork and make key copies. That's nifty. You can become a member and get some discounts if you wish (it's free). Actually there is one in this small, beautiful town! It's a testament to the local home folks for supporting their hometown businesses! I went in there looking for some cloth hand towels. The very kind and helpful lady in charge told me they didn't have any. That was a bit of a surprise to me because they seemed to have an abundance of everything! Not only hardware but also a huge selection of yard art and other display pieces. Like I said; this place is most definitely a throwback in time and its unusual! Even though they didn't have what I needed ; I loved the experience! Any person my age who remembers the way things were in the past should visit not only this place but the entire Main Street of Rutherfordton, N.C. ! It's a thriving small town with much to offer.

Mr. Bullis turned that store into a gold mine. The customer service and help was beyond excellent. He knew where everything was at, just like his assistant Jerry. I would go into the store with a problem I needed a solution to and either Mr. Bullis or Jerry would give their undivided attention to find a solution. Sadly Mr. Bullis passed away several years ago but Jerry was still there and the service remained the same. Then Jerry left, not sure what happened, they said he retired, but it wasn't the same and their business slacked off. About 8 months later I went to Bullis hardware and Jerry was back, he came out of retirement, their business boomed again. About 6 months after that, I went to Bullis and Jerry was gone again. I asked where he was and didn't really get a response. Now the store is manned by Mr. Bullis's grandsons and his daughter and son in law. When the daughter or son in law is in the store the service is fantastic. When the grandsons and their wives are there which is most of the time, the service is terrible, they act like they are doing you a favor by waiting on you. If you ask for help it really isn't great. I know they don't have the experience that Mr. Bullis or Jerry had and in time that may come but time is running out. They are resting on their laurels and the reputation Mr. Bullis made with the store. But the reputation is being degraded by their current people working the store. Their business is down, they don't appear to be as busy as they used to be. They need to realize they have serious competition. There is an ACE hardware on the east side, a new ACE hardware on Reidville Road, Johnsons ACE Hardware in Wellford, I've been to all these stores and their service is like what Bullis used to be. I hate to see Bullis going in the direction they are going, I like that store but it IS NOT THE SAME.

The people at the top--those at the front counter and in charge--rarely smile, offer no greeting, and seem irritated by simple customer interaction. A "thank you," a smile, "would you like it in a bag?" or even "have a nice day"--none of those basic human courtesies seem to exist here. What's more disappointing is that this behavior seems to trickle down. Whether by example or expectation, the culture has become one of indifference. I've given this place several chances, hoping the vibe might shift, but it hasn't. So I've started shopping elsewhere--even if it means driving farther or paying a bit more. I'm not just buying hardware; I'm choosing where I feel respected.

(Keep in mind, my idea of a date is a trip to a hardware store, sometimes just to browse.) There is always someone available to help customers, their selection of items is amazing for a store their size, and they make sure to stock supplies people in this area need. Plus they have a U Haul truck rental that makes life so much easier than going south to Greenville/Spartanburg or North to Hendersonville. Slightly less convenient location, but truth be known, I'd drive 50 miles more if needed. First off, these employees are super nice! And it's not just "hi", "have a nice day". They're just exceptionally nice. Also, they're crazy helpful. I walk in the door and show the gentleman what I need. He says "oh, that's a union brass diverter valve, come down here, I'll show you where it is" what I didn't tell him it's I spent two weeks figuring out who the original manufacturer was! Should've just come here to begin with. I typically only shop at Lowe's. Lowe's didn't have what I needed. From now on, I'm coming here for any plumbing need I have regardless if Lowe's has it or not!!! . Thanks guys!
