I came in real quick to grab a box of donuts. The women at the counter was nice, and efficient. My favorite combination. I would have liked some conversation, but they may have had a long morning (considering they close at 1pm). So I don't mind that too much. In this days day and age, a lot of people don't like conversation, so, I get it. The donuts are nice and fluffy, and they don't have a very artificial flavor. We had chosen this place for years as we are not huge fans of Shipley. However, the last handful of times haven't been great. Today at 11:30 (Sunday) went in for some things- and we were very disappointed. The kolache was made with Chappell hill sausage (which is great)- but the piece was overcooked & could barely be bitten into. The bread had a weird taste & there was hardly any cheese in it. The donuts were pretty, but also had a weird flavor- and it was then that we realized we were tasting old oil. Everything had been cooked in oil that desperately needed changing. The glaze flavor was affected- and tasted like old butter. It was so prominent that none of the donuts were enjoyable, bc once you tasted it - you couldn't un-taste it... we threw almost all away. I realize it was later in the morning- but as a donut shop on the weekends you'd think to keep the inventory fresh & oil clean. Anyway- after having a few issues in past- (stale donuts, overcooked kolaches) off and on- the inconsistency has lost our business. I would like to thank Best Donuts for being open on Tuesday 2/16/21. My power at my house was out from the storm, the roads were icy, the temperatures were frigid and I NEEDED a cup of coffee and a warm doughnut to even start to feel like everything was ok. My husband and I split a large coffee, two chocolate sprinkle donuts and a half dozen donut holes while we warmed up in our truck and charged our cell phones. The donuts were delicious!!! The donut holes had a mild vanilla flavor and the glaze flaked when you bit into them. The glazed donuts were warm, soft and doughy. The coffee was mild, I prefer more bold flavors, but it was exactly what I needed at that moment. Thank you again for being open during such a crazy day. It's very hard to even come close to Shirley's. These donuts are pretty good. Got a coconut glaze and reg glaze. You can tell they been sitting for awhile. This was early Saturday too. It's the perfect amount of cakey, beautiful crust, but still manages to be super foully and light. If there is one thing you get from here, then please get the old fashioned. Blueberry cake donuts: Now I'm not a huge fan of fruity donuts, but WOW. This place does it so freaking well. Not too sweet but you get a lovely blueberry flavor that doesn't seem artificial at all. The glaze is the perfect amount of sweet. It's A beautiful cake texture without being heavy and still gives you the essence of a donut. You can't go wrong. She found me several so I decided to go the the closest one. The gps on my Iphone took me right to this place with no problems. Unfortunately Best Donuts does not make the best donuts. Since we've been Shipley's donut fans for a long time, it's difficult to like anything else. In addition to donuts we decided to try Baudoin Kolaches. This was not a good idea. The name says it all. These are THE BEST donuts in Houston. I'm not a fan of Shipley's over-iced donuts. The amount of sugar gives me a stomach ache. I love Crispy Creme Donuts but, they're only good when fresh. I could eat Best donuts any time of any day and they would still be just as good as they were fresh! Their kolaches are by far the best of all kolache places, too. The bread is similar to Hawaiian bread, the sausage doesn't taste like a hot dog like Shipley's and it has just the perfect amount of cheese and jalapeño sliver.
