I was just telling some friends how great our school is. Then I saw a bummer of a review on here,…read morebased on a short transition period, so I'm writing this. The short story is - it's a very good school run by professionals. A wonderful environment for kids who are neurodivergent or similar and have struggled in a larger school setting. It is supportive and non-judgmental, and we've found it to be a great balance of a place to learn and grow and a place to be supported and accepted. We were worried that it wouldn't be academically rigorous but found that it exceeded our expectations when our child was ready to learn. They meet all children where they are at every step of the way. Also, they do so many fun educational field trips. Here's the long version if you're interested: Our family started at Academy in 2024. That year, the old school director retired. Yes, there were staff changes. Yes, there was an interim director. Yes, it was a time of change and changes is hard especially when you are emotionally invested. Some families were so attached to the old director they didn't come back. Two years later and we're still very happily there. We found gold. Is it fancy? No. Is it exactly like a larger school? No. In areas where a child needs more support, they have it. The policy of "walk to math/language arts/science" allows them to learn subjects at a level and in a group setting difficult to access in larger private or public schools in a supportive way, whether accelerated or at a slower pace. Curriculum is solid and classroom size is excellent. As to the information concern - no. Many kids are district placements. The oversight and regulation involved in that is significant. No public school would partner with them if they broke any laws about information handling and they have placements from many districts. In May of 2024 they had just interviewed candidates for a new permanent director. I hope people will consider that Spring 2024 was just one rare season in the school's administration and while the other review was from someone that felt upset by how that transition was going, the new school director who was hired at the end of that year is awesome. I think she will be there for years to come. I never post reviews, but I hate that that review might be pushing families away from a truly excellent option for kids. To whoever you were it sounds like you felt like your school family was being ripped apart and you were afraid the whole place would be ruined, which must have been awful. Maybe you lost your job, maybe you pulled your child from the school. Regardless, please know that it is still "the little school with a big heart" and from my perspective as a very aware parent, it's in responsible hands.

I figured I'd give it one more shot now that we recently moved from Bellevue to the Plateau/Highlands area. I purchased a bargain voucher for six sessions for one subject, admittedly not expecting much. (hint: their name ends with "on") Originally learned about this BIC location during kids' swimming class when I saw a pair of third graders doing their BIC tutoring homework in the bleachers. When I ran into a former neighbor of mine on our second week, I knew I might be onto something. The Issaquah location is open three times a week (Tue, Thur, Sun) and is managed by Mr Victor Ho. Victor also started a new Wednesday sessions at the EX3 Teen & Rec Center on the Samm. Plateau. BIC "Enrichment Courses" are divided into English and Math subject. Each session is 75 minutes long for one subject. Victor Students seems to be grouped by age/grade You have several students under the supervision of an adult teacher, and the students are expected to work on their own, "study hall" style, until they are stuck or otherwise have a question. Private tutoring this is not. Most of the hard work is at home, where the parents have to establish ad maintain a daily study routine for each kid. I've also noticed lot of anxious parents prepping their 6-8 year olds for the Cogat and achievement exams (I'm no sure if the latter is ITBS or Stanford10). Basically it's whatever BSD, ISD and LWSD are dishing out. I have no opinion on this particular offering, other than that it's popular and probably worth checking out if that's your focus. Ultimately, what sets the Issaquah operation apart is the dedication and accessibility of the branch manager, who has been receptive to and patient with my many questions and concerns about our kids progress (or sometimes, the lack thereof). Victor has been willing to tweak things so we can emphasize topics where there are gaps in understanding or merely insufficient mastery. Vic is also eager to hear about any errors / typos in the problem sets, as well as of any subpar tutoring sessions. As you'd expect, the tutoring competition is stiff on the Eastside but they seem to be thriving. Don't let their unassuming exterior and frankly, dingy interior fool you -- what they save on rent / furniture, they pass on the savings to you! (Seriously, BIC rates are lower than our previous tutoring programs.) This is a system that appears to be working for our children.

As in the center, the time is split between 2 or 3 students so you don't get them all to yourself, but Aaron was really efficient with his time.

This is why I reached out to Sylvan for help. They evaluated my son's reading skills and made a plan for him to get caught up. By paying for a bulk package of hours I was able to save a bit of money. He's starting middle school next year and my wife and I had hoped that Sylvan would be able to help him gain more confidence and work through some of the mental blocks he has when tackling writing assignments. When we signed him up for classes at Sylvan, we expected that he would receive tailored, individualized tutoring to reinforce the concepts he already knows, help build his confidence, and provide techniques and strategies for not worrying about getting it perfect the first time. Unfortunately, the lessons ended up being very boilerplate with minimal customization. The majority of each lesson was spent rehashing grammar concepts he largely already knows, and typically would only spend a few minutes on the creative process of writing. There was also significantly less one-on-one time than we expected, and he spent the majority of the time working on his own on a tablet. We hoped to discuss our concerns during our monthly meeting with the center director, but unfortunately the meetings ended up getting canceled at the last minute three times in a row so we finally just decided to pull him out at the end of the month. The staff are very nice but it certainly wasn't worth the very high cost, and I wouldn't recommend Sylvan for anyone in a similar situation to ours. Maybe it's better for older students or for students who need help with more defined, linear concepts like math or science.

They did not follow BIP during this (I was listening via phone) and asked me to keep her home till contact wi district was made 5 days later they told district they could not support her. They screwed up and threw her away! If your child fits the narrow profile they are looking for it's a wonderful school if not they do not have flexibility. Search elsewhere

He thrived in the one-to-one environment and a creative personality, previously untapped, began to emerge from within my son. He graduated from Yellow Wood and Mt. Si and has attended Bellevue College in the Autism Navigators Program. He will earn his AA from Bellevue College this spring. The teachers at Yellow Wood were inspirational. By tapping into my son's interests, they allowed him to thrive, paced his work appropriately, pushed him to the limits of his capabilities, and kept the lost communications he previously experienced to a minimum. I am still involved with Yellow Wood and feel very confident that current and future students will obtain similar benefits through the special learning environment that has only grown stronger over the last several years.
