I don't know what the prices were when he started coming here, but I was able to book 2 rooms for three nights for cheaper than it costs to stay on the island in one room for one night. Sorry about the flashback to math class, people, but this is an economics lesson where you'll want to pay attention. There is a log cabin kind of feel to the architecture. And, in another throwback to a bygone age, the doors use keys...actual, metal keys, not plastic cards. Outside the room, you'll find gas barbecue grills with tongs and other tools to enjoy your home away from home. While the room itself seems humble, it does contain most of the amenities you would expect. It's spacious. The beds are reasonably comfortable. There is a mini fridge, but unfortunately no microwave. And the restaurant is just a few steps away from your room, and it's excellent. One thing you would not expect, however, is a mind-boggling array of on-demand programming on your flat screen TV. Dozens of shows are available from maybe 30 different networks. And, it's no extra charge for any of it. Even if it weren't for all this, the location itself is perfect. Directly across the street are two Mackinac Island ferry terminals. I'm not exaggerating: they're literally across the street. That $27 you pay for a round-trip ticket is a heck of a lot cheaper than you would pay each day to stay on the island. Economics, people. So, go ahead and get a second mortgage to pay for a stay on the island. I will keep on coming here and enjoying all the great benefits, while also having money left over to actually pay for things to do on the island.

It's off the beaten path, but close enough to the shops in town and it's an easy walk to many places to eat as well. It's not a big place and it's not a big well known company either. It's a nice family owned business. There were pros and cons to our room so I'll be sure to cover everything. First off, the room was very clean and that comes from someone who is a neat freak. Housekeeping was fantastic. The bathroom could have been more user friendly. Although it was nicely updated, there was no room to set toiletries because it had a pedestal sink which looked very nice, but when you're traveling, you have 'stuff' that needs to set out. The odd thing was there was no toilet paper holder and because it had the pedestal sink, there was no room to set the roll. We either had to set it behind us on the tank lid which was an awkward reach or put it on the shower 'step in'. It was kind of maddening but maybe they weren't done updating or maybe someone forgot to reinstall the holder after the update. Now on to the shower.... it was beautifully tiled with a very nice and newer looking shower head. I loved it. The downside was that the shower didn't have any type of shelf or area to put shampoo, conditioner, soap etc except for the safety railing. So... we had to balance the bottles, razor and bar of soap on the railing. That was a fun daily game of balancing everything. The towels and wash cloths were thick, soft and clean and there was plenty of bar soap and shampoo that was replenished daily. The light and overhead fan were connected rather than separate so when you turned on the light, the fan went on as well. The toilet looked fairly new and it was the newer type that had the water saving flush. All in all the bathroom was pretty nice. If they could add a toilet paper holder and maybe a shelf for the shower to set the bottles, bar soap and anything else on and maybe a shelf for toiletries and accessories next to the sink, the bathroom would be perfect. For the main living area, it was your standard motel room with a smaller size TV, a small fridge with a freezer, a small Keurig type coffee maker with two coffee pods a day and an ice bucket. There were 2 drawers on the dresser and one of them was where I had to put my cosmetics and toiletries when getting ready each morning due to the bathroom having no room for anything. There was also a small rack above the dresser for hanging a few clothes The two beds were full size. Needless to say, I was happy to come back home to the queen size we're used to. They had a variety of pillow to choose from based on your sleeping preferences. The bed overall was a bit too soft for my liking but for 4 nights, the full size, softer bed was fine. The comforters looked clean and fairly new and updated. There was an outlet next to the beds to plug in charging cables, and the bedside table had a wireless charger that we were able to just set our phones on to charge so that was nice. The outlet did have a couple of ports too, but unfortunately they weren't working. There's a heated pool, but we didn't use it so I can't say anything about it except that it had a nice sitting area and people seemed to enjoy swimming in it. The best part about staying here is the awesome view of the Mackinac Bridge. Pretty much every room here has a great view. We were closer to the end, which is closer to the water, which is closest to the bridge and we were on the 2nd floor. I'm glad we were up a level because the morning and evening views of the bridge were beautiful from the 2nd floor. You do have to walk upstairs because there's no elevator so if you have difficulty with climbing stairs, the lower level is where you want to be. The sunrises from the balcony were fantastic, beautiful and picturesque. There is a small beach, a walkway and benches for sitting as well. There's also a grassy area with picnic tables right outside the motel. So....there you have it! A pretty nice place with absolutely fantastic views of the bridge along with lovely morning sunrises and close to the bustling town where there are plenty of shops and places to eat. If you decide to stay here, I hope you enjoy your stay just as we did.

The Inn at Bay Harbor has been a Marriott property for 22 years. As of 11/1, it will be a Boyne Resort. I don't think the change of ownership will impact the charm. If anything, it will improve things by being a Michigan based company. Love that this hotel has so many room variations - typical rooms to cottages. Outside of the Inn, there are home rentals through Bay Harbor's website too. This hotel is open year round and there is so much to do. Love high tea! Makes me feel like a princess while adulting. My husband and I plan to come up again this summer. Such a special place! Check out the bay harbor website for events if you're interested in their art festival, hot balloon festival, or any festive activities. They have so much going on! This is an old time motor hotel (motel) located on the main drag, just up the hill from Shepler's Ferry. It transported me back to family vacations in the 1960s, before interstates and box hotels were pervasive. On first sight, one might understandably move on. Rust on the outside of the motel room doors might have suggested poor upkeep. But we already had reservations and the rust was a false flag. Check-in was quick. The owner called us as we approached the Mackinac bridge to confirm our arrival. As has been reported by others, staff was both friendly and helpful. We were offered discounted ferry tickets and an offer that we could leave our car at the hotel during our day visit to the island. This saved us parking fees. The Shepler's shuttle was called to collect us the next day and dropped us off when we returned. As many have written, this family operated motel is impeccably clean and well appointed inside. Internet was fast, heat in the evenings kept us comfortable. (Many hotels turn off heat until October). This motel has obviously gone through a recent renovation. Entering the room, the smell of freshly laid carpet was apparent. The two queen beds were comfortable and provided a good night sleep for our family of 3. Despite the location on a busy street, insulation and sound proofed windows muffled any noise from passing traffic. All important hot water had good pressure and volume in a very clean bathroom. (The only negative would be the towels which were rather thin). We normally stay in brand name box hotels when we are on the road because there is usually a free breakfast. Wayside offers coffee but no breakfast. But that was not a problem. A pancake house was a short walk down the street. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Wayside Motel. It was a good value. We will look to stay here again on our next visit to Mackinac Island.

We weren't here long enough!! Petoskey is definitely gorgeous and I absolutely will be visiting again this summer. Just a note, there is no refrigerator or microwave in the rooms and the hotel is relatively noisy. It's old so the floors creak. If there is a wedding going on (which there was) the music can be heard on all floors. After a carriage tour of the island, we went here and explored on our own. If you are not staying here, you have to pay an entrance fee to be able to go in and explore. Its porch is the world's longest and offers a great view. Its interiors are intricate and very beautiful. One would see that the carpet, fixtures, and furniture are well taken care of. The vibrant colors, bold contrasts, and floral patterns are everywhere. They have different restaurants inside (Main Dining Room, Cupola Bar, Geranium Bar, The Jockey Club, etc) as well as an ice cream parlor (Sadie's). They also have some areas showcasing artwork/paintings as well as memorabilia from movies shot here: Somewhere in Time and This Time for Keeps. Do not forget to visit the Secret Garden. It's beautiful! The accommodation can be very pricey. Though we did not stay here, visiting (with the entrance fee) is definitely worth it.
