Most of my deceased friends and relatives are buried either at Calvary Cemetery in East L.A. or Rose Hills Cemetery north of Whittier. Like Calvary, Resurrection is a Catholic cemetery, but because Calvary is so much older and closer to where my older family members lived, the vast majority of my deceased Catholic relatives are buried at Calvary. I really only know about Resurrection because my father's aunt (2011) and her husband (2024) were buried here. The irony of it is that for most of my life, Auntie Manya and Uncle Paul lived in Whittier, right off of the road that leads to Rose Hills Cemetery's main entrance. They were the family members who lived closest to Rose Hills, yet they chose to be buried far from both their home at the time (they would eventually move to L.A.'s South Bay) and most of my aunt's family. All of this is to say that I haven't spent much time here. I've been to at least two graveside services here and one or two other occasions--probably services to mark either 40 days or one year since the person's passing. I'm always surprised by the size of the place. The first time I came, I was very ill from food poisoning I had gotten in the Bay Area not long before my flight, so I wasn't paying that much attention. The grave site didn't seem too far from the entrance we used, so I thought it was a very small cemetery. It's not. The grounds are nice and well maintained. When my Uncle Paul's ashes were buried next to Auntie Manya's coffin a little more than a year ago, Resurrection had set up the tent for the service a good 30 yards from the grave sites themselves. I'm assuming they chose the tent location because of uneven ground or a lack of a large enough empty area closer to the burial plots, but it was awkward to have most of the service beneath the tent and then straining to hear as the priest said more prayers as he walked with the urn from the tent to where it would be buried. In contrast, at Auntie Manya's elder sister Margie's burial last year (she lived to be 102!) at Calvary, the tent was set up right near the burial plot. Despite all the headstones and graves around, Calvary was able to site the tent right where it belonged; why couldn't Resurrection do the same thing? Sadly enough, I don't visit Auntie Manya's or Uncle Paul's graves as often as I do other friends' and family members', almost solely because there are more graves of loved ones at other cemeteries. Other than the noise of lawnmowers, it is a peaceful place, and despite having pretty easy freeway access, you're relatively unaware of being smack dab in the middle of the sprawling suburbs of L.A. County's San Gabriel Valley.

However,…read morethree staff members sitting at front counter, you could tell none wanted to get up and assist us the minute we walked in. Acted like we were bothering them instead of being attentive to what we needed assistance with. They should've upgraded their website or added a self service kiosk aiding those needing help to find a service &/or grave. Forrest lawn gets a hand of applause for have this option available on-line including a map of their grounds. If it's such a bother please add this feature for people to use. I bet if we would've inquired about purchasing property their tune would've probably changed. So sad esp since this is a Catholic Cemetery. Do better Resurrection Cemetery & actually help those who walk into the office seeking assistance!!

Likewise our kind local sheriff needed to remain with us until someone arrived. Originally we contacted a funeral home in our area that is well known. We were given an estimated time of arrival of "within the hour." When that time came and passed I called and was given the same estimated time of "within the hour." When I was on my third hour of waiting with our loved one still on the floor where we had tried CPR, and the kind sheriff, patiently waiting, I began to call other funeral homes. I left a message at 2 others then on my third try I contacted "A Serenity Funeral & Cremation Services" and Daniel answered the phone. Despite having a busy morning right from the get-go he was kind, compassionate and forthright. He let me know he was having a busy morning and would do his very best to get there within the hour. He arrived within 30 minutes along with another gentleman. The compassion, tenderness and grace that they showed our loved one and to us, who we're newly grieving was an answered prayer. They reverently allowed us our final goodbyes and had no problem when I wanted to include a special blanket to wrap our loved one in. Daniel sat with us, answered questions and patiently walked us through the process. The kindness and care that Serenity Funeral and cremation services showed us should be a model for the industry. When we finished all the paperwork we realized that "A Serenity" was actually a fraction of the price of what we were going to pay with the locally touted company that continually told me it would be "within the hour." I highly recommend a Serenity Funeral and cremation services. While death is a part of life Daniel from Serenity made us feel as if the loss of our loved one was the most important thing in the world at that moment ..which for us it was. Thank you Daniel. Even though we no longer live nearby, it just feels comforting and we like the service here. This time, we had to say goodbye to my grandmother. The Chinese Cemetery in Los Angeles is located across from an Elementary school in a residential…read morearea. There's plenty of street parking, but the cemetery itself doesn't. There's a one way very narrow road, but sometimes cars go in both directions. It's a smaller and older cemetery with all plots of land already occupied. It's not the most maintained, but it's great for what it is. The center does have a nice, clean shrine for prayer and burning Heaven money, and there's restrooms near the entrance.

To Karen T's review, I approached the groundskeeper, Tony, to fill in some holes at the base of my grandparent's headstone (soil erosion). He very willingly obliged since he looks after the cemetery. I asked him if those were his tools along the shrubbery, and he said yes (they were your typical gardener's tools), but I did not ask him about the draped Dodger's shirt or pants, or grey jacket on 3 of the tombstones. The clothes appear to have been left there for quite some time, and perhaps even by the family member (?) themselves. I scanned the rest of the cemetery for homeless, but there were none. Only Tony looking after the grounds. He informed me that the gates open at 8am. Noticed the lettering for the Chinese Cemetary outside the the main gates (both English and Chinese) had fallen off. I'll be back to clean my grandparents headstone, fill in the faded lettering, and seal in the stone. It's the least I could do.
