This year, Hanukkah Palooza was held at Temple Shomer Emunim; they hosted a concert for the…read moreMaccabeats, the YouTube-sensation known for their Candlelight music video. I'm not Jewish, but about a year ago, I introduced my kids to Jewish culture through the Maccabeats' YouTube videos. When I told my kids that the Maccabeats were coming to town, they were super excited. When we arrived for the concert, we were greeted by a woman who said she wasn't Jewish either. She welcomed us and answered my questions about how we, as non-Jews, could respect Jewish customs. All the Jews we met were very welcoming also. My girls had a wonderful time dancing with the other kids; one of my kids even sat in an older girl's lap. It broke my heart to hear the Maccabeats talk about some Jewish kids' challenges attending schools with few, if any, other Jews. My kids and I say "Shalom aleikhem" (i.e., peace be upon you) to our Jewish neighbors.

I haven't been to services here, but we happened to come to this church by accident. Our car engine…read moreblew on a very cold Saturday afternoon. We pulled over to this church parking lot to survey the damage. We called AAA and waited...the engine was not working so there was no heat. Our van was stalled in the middle of the parking lot, so while we waited, I put the car in neutral and my family and I pushed the van into a parking space. A short while later a man living next to the church, who was also a church member, came out to where we were and saw we had my children with us and told us that we could wait in the church where it was warm and the furnace was running. He said to make ourselves feel at home inside the church while we were waiting. We were very grateful because the temperature was getting cold in the van. The church was very clean and warm and inviting. The man said that the children could play with the toys in the children's room which kept my kids occupied until we got help later on. This church was a blessing for our time of need and the one member represented kindness and care for us while we were stranded. It's a good reflection of their church, I would say. Blessings to them.
