As an elementary educator I was very invested in my search for a great preschool. Prior to sunny hills we tried a play school where more of the focus was social. Although this was helpful, I found that some organized learning, group projects, and early learning skills were missing. Then along came sunny hills. Although nestled below a church, they teach kindness, not religious material. I have two kids who both have started at sunny hills. Both were shy to start and nervous about school. The teachers aided in them feeling safe and welcome and now both kids love going to school every morning. I will be honest. I am a total hover mom and Sunny Hills has impressed me every step along the way. They even helped me let go a little knowing my kids were always in good hands. Dropping your kids off somewhere you know they are cared for and safe is the best feeling. The cost of the preschool is so reasonable, especially for what you get. The school also does things like field trips, winter concerts, art shows and other activities to include the parents in. I cannot say enough nice things about the education and care that all three classes at sunny hills have given to my children and our family.

The school has a wonderful atmosphere and there is a lot of outdoor time no matter the weather. Teacher Millie runs the school and is the lead teacher for the preK class for the kids who will be entering kindergarten the following year. We love teacher Millie! She is kind, caring, dynamic, and so invested in each and every child. We had the unique experience of being able to interact with Millie and her preK class over Zoom sessions post Covid 19 closure of schools. Millie did three Zoom meetings a week and handled the experience with enthusiasm and AMAZING patience. It was a great way to stay connected with the school; to watch Millie keep the kids engaged over Zoom for at least 45 minutes each session was impressive! She often would stay on Zoom much longer with the kids who still wanted to interact with each other or have another story etc. Millie used the Oregon Zoo's animal spotlight videos as the focus of the lessons and the art project every meeting. All of the preK children seem so well prepared for their transition to kindergarten. Our daughter was in the younger class for the 19/20 schools year and will be going into Millie's class this fall and I'm so excited to watch our child grow with the class. Another bonus is that Sunny Hills has a summer camp program for 3-8 years old, so kids about to enter the school in the fall as well as kids who just graduated, plus their siblings, get to have more time at Sunny Hills! This is what we did with our daughter last summer leading up to her first regular school year in Julie's class. The school is located in their own area on the rear side of a church. The school also borders a smaller THPRD playground, field, and open area which are perfect for outdoor time. The location is a big plus! This school is a hidden gem and I feel so fortunate to have found Millie and Sunny Hills.

Unfortunately, due to the mass staff exodus the Pre-K program was cut with little notice and we were left with no child care for this entire summer. From Jan-May of this year we had numerous late night emails asking us to not bring our infant in for class, making it very difficult for my husband to work and for me to see scheduled patients. From my perspective, this is a salary issue. Employees at Cadence are potentially not being paid enough and are leaving for other jobs. Teacher Nancy, Chelsea, Zita and Liz, dozens of our kids miss you and will forever be grateful to you for sticking it out as long as you could. The food is another aspect that needs to be addressed immediately. I hope they are no longer serving bowls of corn (as seen in my child's photo on google review) or the ever popular "vegan meat balls" that the kids would frown at, weekly. I want to say Thank you to Teacher Mia and Vicki who made us stay as long as we did and who you should feel confident leaving your children with. HORRIBLE! I would not trust this daycare center for my child or anyone else's child. Go somewhere…read morethat truly cares about providing high quality personalized childcare to your child. I couldn't help but feel like the childcare staff did not know or did not care about what they were doing. Child hated it and we hated it. There were signs that the child was neglected in various ways. At pickup, child's nose was often crusty from crying and almost never wiped clean. Child's mouth was also not cleaned and frequently dirty from food; this caused a long-term rash\skin irritation\dermatitis around child's mouth. There were times the child's bottom was really red from harsh scrubbing; this indicates that a fecal diaper had dried and crusted after a long period of time of not being changed and they were scrubbing aggressively to get fecal matter off. Child did not seem to be happy in any picture provided. Child strongly indicated that they did not want to be there before and after every single day. After that daycare, child was constantly frightened of other kids being nearby. While attending, child had frequent night terrors and would not sleep well at night. Seems to be quantity over quality at this daycare. Choose anywhere else to care for your precious child! They will frequently state that the child 'ate all' of a meal or snack, but I have a difficult time believing that that is true. Our child does not 'eat all'. Also, I once received an update that the child 'ate all' of a snack, then walked in, and the snack was sitting untouched in front of the child. I took the snack home and took a picture of it. With every interaction, you get this awful sense that the bubbly Director will say anything to trick you into believing everything is wonderful or that she will take care of your issues. Director will say "Your child is doing well and/or child is bonding with so and so", but it is presumably to placate the parent. Repeatedly said they provide 2-6 pictures per day of your child - only one picture of child provided in the first week. ~5 pictures were provided over the next two weeks. The 2-6 pictures of child per day were not provided, even after complaining repeatedly. I am fairly certain other pictures were taken of child in the first week, but they were likely deleted and not shown to us. The app they use is complete trash - KidReports app has a 2.0 of 5.0 rating on Google Play. Did they use this horribly rated app because it was the cheapest option? Didn't have access to app for five days, even after complaining every day - it was not important for the parents to know anything about their child in the first week apparently. There was practically zero personalized communication about child well-being in the first week. We canceled after the first week, but they lock you into two additional weeks with their contract. They do not even ask why you are leaving. It does not seem to be important for them to improve what is wrong. Childcare staff rotate constantly - I saw someone different in the room frequently. The daycare staff rarely tried to make me and the child feel welcome; often, I would not know how to hand off my distraught child. They hired four new people at roughly the same time - probably a sign of staffing issues. One of the staff they hired is 20 years old; they do not seem professionally experienced. While the director was seemingly out, I overheard daycare admin staff telling the children caregivers what to do, and how to wake up the children from nap. This seriously confused me. Shouldn't the children caregivers know what to do? Are the caregivers that inexperienced/inept? Are your children truly in good hands behind closed doors? That same day, I picked up at 3:50 pm; as far as I could tell, the child did not have an afternoon snack by that time. Due to many reasons, I do not trust leaving my child or any other child in this place. Who knows what actually occurs here. I will never bring my child to another daycare center after this nightmare!

I am the grandmother of a two-year-old who has been attending Montessori Cares for nearly a year…read more While we are able to provide her full-time care ourselves, we've seen that the environment here is far more beneficial to her overall development. Socially and academically, the growth has been remarkable--especially in her speech, confidence, and ability to express herself. She is learning valuable practical skills, from simple independence at the table to problem-solving with puzzles. She loves reading, responds beautifully to her teachers, and is thriving in a child-centered, self-paced environment. We don't simply see progress--we see confidence, independence, and joy. The Montessori approach, focused on independence and hands-on learning, has truly been a gift to her development. After 27 years at an elementary school, I can say with complete confidence: children thrive when they are allowed to learn at their own pace and according to their individual interests. This is the difference between a child who keeps up--and a child who truly excels...where learning is not just beneficial, it's TRANSFORMATIONAL! We feel a deep sense of peace knowing she is being so well prepared for the future. The "first five" years are critical, and this school is providing an exceptional foundation. Mrs. Khan is extraordinary--attentive, intuitive, and deeply invested in each child. After our granddaughter returned from a hospital stay, she noticed subtle weight loss that others might have missed. That level of care speaks volumes. She truly KNOWS and loves her students. It was a seamless transition as Mrs. Khan was one of the first to start curriculum on Zoom. To be honest it seemed as if she had this as a back-up plan all along. Mrs. Khan was thorough in addressing any of our needs. She offered us all some type of relief; special arrangements for the essential-working parents in need of childcare, also financial adjustments to accommodate the changes and any job loss. Virtual circle time, math and language classes yielded show-and-tells along with homework. The children engaged with their teachers and classmates during extracurriculars such as Music, yoga/meditation, and storytime. We all did our part making this new normal work out for our children. The effort put forth from Mrs. Khan and her team is to be praised. I am very grateful for this school and its wonderful teachers. Then, just six weeks before his third birthday, we were informed that he did not have a spot in the three-year-old classroom and that his spot in the two-year-old classroom had been given to a child on the waitlist. Yes, you read that correctly: Our son was forced out of this preschool without justification, and we were given six weeks to find new childcare accommodations at a time when most providers have six-month waitlists! After asking around, it became clear that this situation is by no means common for childcare providers. I won't get into the other red flags we identified because frankly, they pale in comparison to this infraction. I have had some time to process everything, and it has left me split between two conclusions: either Sunshine Montessori is managed so poorly that they failed to continue to care for our son or, for reasons I can't comprehend, the leadership at Sunshine Montessori made a malicious decision not to continue to care for our son. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusion. My only advice is to proceed with caution if you're considering leaving your child in the care of Sunshine Montessori Preschool. You too may be left scrambling to find a new provider on short notice.

Not a good environment for neurodivergent kids, significant lack of support or willingness to try…read moreimplementing simple accommodations to help them succeed (e.g. visual schedules), and only surface level engagement with the NWRESD process. My child was enrolled for approximately 8 months. Of the handful of places my child attended over the years this was by far the worst experience we had. The first red flag was when they declined to attend my child's IFSP meeting. They were uninterested in collaborating with us to develop strategies to manage challenging behavior (and would later send my child home early several times because they were unequipped to deal with it) or collaborate on accommodations they could implement. We left sunshine a month earlier than planned because we were so fed up, felt like they saw our child as a "behavior problem" that we needed to fix, and I was left with anxiety about how my child would do in kindergarten and beyond. If there wasn't such a shortage of childcare we would have moved programs earlier- the only thing that kept us there was a lack of availability. We also thought Sunshine overall felt unfriendly. The head teacher barely looked up at drop off to say hi and it didn't seem like the kids worked on very many engaging projects. I'm used to my child coming home with paintings, and paper plate animals, and handmade balls of wool, or cut out/glued on/colored paper, or seeing their artwork on the walls of the classroom- but that wasn't the case here. I want to be fair and say I don't think everything was terrible. My child made friends, she liked her room teacher, she made progress in academic learning, very occasionally brough home cute craft projects, played with some fun toys, had access to interesting learning materials, and I didn't fear for her safety. If your child does not need additional accommodations, is fairly self directed, follows verbal directions, and can still for extended periods they may do fine here. If they are wiggle worms that need extra movement in their day or have learning challenges, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. My child is now THRIVING in kindergarten and I'm so thankful for the support they are getting at another school. I'm also so thankful to the NWRESD teachers that visited in the sunshine classroom and reassured me throughout our struggles my child was acting in age appropriate ways and doing their best even with such lack of support.

The teachers are warm, attentive, and deeply understanding--they made both of my kids feel seen, safe, and loved every single day. The curriculum is thoughtful and well-balanced, blending play-based learning with foundational academic skills in a way that kept my children both engaged and challenged. I was always impressed by the healthy meals they provided, as well as the wide range of activities designed to nurture emotional, social, and intellectual growth. The play spaces are spotless and thoughtfully designed, and the fenced outdoor area is full of creative, fun structures that encouraged exploration and movement. Most importantly, my children loved going to school. They came home happy, enriched, and more than ready for kindergarten--confident, curious, and well-prepared. Happy Face Preschool provided a level of care, education, and heart that went above and beyond anything I ever hoped for.
